When using Java Code:

Why do we put System.in in the constructor? What purpose does it serve and why can't we just not use it?

Is a constructor required to create an object, if one of its instance or class variables haven't been instantiated? Like private String string;
I want to create a simple app that takes a name from the console then compares the name to a small phone book,when the name matches another name it will return the associated phone number.
I have a small contacts class which has name and number fields,Then I have a phone book class which populates an array with 4 contact objects that I can compare the entered number against.
here is my contacts class

In the main method I am just trying to print out one of the fields for one contact to see if I can actually access it to compare it to the name entered.Its saying "MaryJones" cannot be resolved to a type.I'm guessing I cant create all that code in the constructor?
The experiments will slowly converge towards one big experiment: a simple game. I have just a little interest in games (perhaps I should have more), but making one - even a simple one - should be self rewarding.
However, now to the point.
* The experiment creates an array of rectangle objects.
* The rectangles are painted inside a Frame object at random x,y coords generated by a random number generator
* The rectangles are stationary.
* The rectangles are each assigned their own random colour.
* The array of rectangle objects is created inside the constructor of the class.
The actual code contains various other variables and methods which would distract from a quick analysis, so below is code which has the same logical structure which also fails (instead of array of rectangles, I have used arrays of integers).

that i started to learn programming and i started with java. so there is a book that i'm on it right now called "Pearson Absolute Java 5th Edition" by Walter Savitch anyway i'm on a project in fifth season which i have to create a class named HotDogStand that operates several hotdog stands distributed throughout town. the whole program is clear. although its so easy to accomplish , my question is more about debugging. so here is the code:

everything works fine. but my question is what if someone use a constructor again? you see if in the main method someone do this after creating the object "stand3":

i know that it's logical to use setter method but this program doesn't have one. if someone do the thing i wrote above, the calculation of static variable, totalHotDogs will be all wrong. because of totalHotDogs += hotDogsPerDay; it will add another value for the same object. how can i tell the machine to ignore the second (or more) invocation of the constructor for the same object?
I want to create an order system. My Problem is that I want to create it dynamic, with ArrayLists and no fixed Array size.
Basically I have already a User which is able to purchase something.

a.purchase(new Order(new OrderThing(5,car));
This will work!
But I want something like this:
a.purchase(new Order(new orderThing(5,car), new orderThing(2,car), new OrderThing(1,car),...)
Basically I don't know how much OrderThings I want to create before I type in the OrderThings with new Order().
But in java it is before you can construct orderThings you must already know in the constructer how much objects you do want.
Now as im writing this question I got a idea of waiting for an Array of new OrderThing but it don't work. When I write
a.purchase(new Order(new orderThing(5,car), new orderThing(2,car)))
it wants a constructor which is based on Order(orderThing,orderThing)

2. LectureRoom has a constructor that receives courseName, roomNumber, and Lecturer. The constructor then sets/assign the courseName, roomNumber and Lecturer. This constructor also creates the studentList arraylist object.
Its written that every constructor calls its super class constructor. And we know, constructors are called to create an object. Does it mean that if I am creating an object of a class, I am actually creating objects of all its super class???

I have a class of Date with a constructor with 3 parameters in it. Those 3 parameters are int data type just to enter month, year, day.
I have another class called Author which has a constructor of Date diedDate; as a parameter passing to the Author constructor.
I was asked to call the Date parameter is null, call the default constructor but I thought for the Date parameter I could only enter something like 0,0,0 instead of typing in null, null, null because null is for String data type isn't it?

I am trying to build a method that takes an array of object and adds a new object of that type to the end of it . ONLY ALLOWED TO USE ARRAY , NO ARRAYLISTS VECTORS ECT . i realize that if the array is full you can use the java copy array method to make a new array and double its size until a certain point . The MAX AMOUNT OF OBJECTS is a constant that is 100 but for some reason even when executing my code i keep getting null pointer exceptions or index out of bounds errors , i have written this method many times now with out any success.
My question is how do I write a method that adds an object to the end of an array and if there are no spots left copies the current array into a new array and extend the size

There is more code, but it's repetitive. Now, I keep getting an error. Array of bounds. I believe i get the error because the phone number. The phone number is on the next line..I created a different arraylist for phonenumber, but I dont know how to match it with the correct person, student, employee...etc.
Say I have two classes, Author and Book, and I have 2 author objects and 10 book objects. I would like to know how to do two things:
1) Make some sort of connection that makes clear that author X wrote books A, B and F.
2) Call a method from a book object that is connected to an author.
Seeing as I don't know which books will be connected to an author, is there some way to call a method of an object bases on a variable object name? Something like call the getFirstPage() method for every book that is linked to author X?
I have a project in java that asks me to load some information from previous object files and add new objects to them afterwards. I created the files, but when I close the program and search for the previous information that should've been saved in the object file , it return nothing.

It is a college course assignment that I pretty much completed but for the last part in which I'm suppose to change the values of all fields and display the modified values using a toString method. Modifying the values of the fields is where I am stuck. I don't think I need to create a new text data file to do this. The instructor only asked that all the values of fields be changed and this was the last part of the assignment so I don't think it involves creating additional ObjectOutputStream and ObjectInputStream objects. I'm getting a NullPointerException error on line 161.Here is the code. I'm also including the input data file.

I think I have it correct up to the casting but I don't understand what I'm suppose to do with the this.equals(). Also I'm getting an error that I'm not returning a boolean... I get this all the time in other problems. I don't get why since I have to instances of returning booleans in this. "returns true if the given object equals this object" makes no sense to me. I assume the given object, in my case, is 'O'. What is 'this' object referring to?

Now lets say that I want to access a method 'addInterest()' that is in the 'SavingsAccount' class I would have to do: '((SavingsAccount)s).addInterest();'
The question I have is why do I have to cast 'b' to SavingsAccount? Isn't the actual object reference of 'b' already an instance of 'SavingsAccount' class? How does the 'BankAccount' affect the object itself? I'm really confused as to what class is truly getting instantiated and how BankAccount and SavingsAccount are both functioning to make the object 'b'.
I don't understand why the object reference variable 'a' cannot be recast from a thisA object reference to a thisB object reference.Is it the case that once a reference variable is linked to a particular object type then it cannot switch object types later on.I am facing the Java Associate Developer exam soon and I am just clearing up some issues in my head around object reference variable assignment,
