Cannot Convert From Object To E In Last Line Of Pop Method

Jul 20, 2014

I am getting this error "Type mismatch: cannot convert from Object to E" in the last line of the pop() method.

package stack;
public class Node<E> {

E item;
Node next;

Node(E item) {
this.item = item;
this.next = null;
}

[code]....

I don't understand why that error occurs despite item being declared as type E in the Node class.

Using Static Method To Convert A String To Integer Object - Compiler Error

Mar 1, 2014

I am using a static method to convert a string to an Integer object. Next using a instance method to convert Integer object to an int.

Compiler is giving me two "cannot find symbol" errors:

One pointing to the dot operator between "Integer.valueOf(s)"

The other pointing to the dot operator between "obj.intValue()"

I have latest JDK installed: jdk-7u51-windows-x64.exe

Looks like JCL installed correctly with rt.jar file located in "lib" directory under "Program Files"

Following is source code:

Java Code:

public class StringToInt
{
public static void main (String args [])
{
String s = "125";
Integer obj = Integer.valueOf(s);
int i = obj.intValue();
i += 10;
System.out.println(i);
}
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

How To Make File Reader Object Move To Next Line If There Is No More Input On Line

Feb 18, 2015

How do I make the file reader object move to the next line if there is no more input on the line. Here is my text and output file as you can see that my text file column cuts off on the 2nd line after 70. I want to read that next line which is 100 into my labs variable however its reading it into my final exams variable. I'll also post the code but I didn't think it was necessary.

textfile:
100908095
1008070
10070

output:
Labs Projects Tests Final Exams
100908095
1008070100
70

[import java.util.Scanner;
import java.io.*;
public class MyGrades
{
public static void main (String[] args) throws IOException
{
int lab, project, test;
int finalExam;//Par and Player values

[Code]...

not sure if I code wrapped it correctly

Example:

Sadly String[] and Set are incompatible types.

About the same as using .add three times, but shorter.

Convert Java Object Using JAXB To XML

Nov 7, 2014

I am suppose to have a method called save() which should marshall the list of computer parts in the right panel to an XML file. In reverse, another method called load() that should unmarshall the saved XML file back into an object. So basically, the Save event will call save() method and save the list of parts in the right panel to an XML file. The Load event should clear the right panel, and call load() method. When load() is called, it should display the unmarshalled data in the right panel. I got "Exit" to work.

I'm having hard time figuring out the "Load" and "Save" parts though.

Java Convert String Of XML To Document Object Is Null All The Time

Apr 14, 2014

I am trying to parse a XML string into `org.w3c.dom.Document` object.

I have looked at solutions provided [here](xml - How to convert String to DOM Document object in java? - Stack Overflow), [here](How to create a XML object from String in Java? - Stack Overflow) and a few other blogs that give a variation of the same solution. But the `Document` object's #Document variable is always null and nothing gets parsed.

Here is the XML

XMLMappingValidator v = new XMLMappingValidator("<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
" +
"<mapping>
" +
"<container>
" +
"<source-container>c:stem.csv</source-container>

[Code] ....

When I call
**v.getXML().toString()**
I get
`[#document: null]`

Clearly, the parse is failing. But I don't understand why.

Equals Method - Take Object Reference And Return True If Given Object Equals This Object

Mar 28, 2014

Create an equals method that takes an object reference and returns true if the given object equals this object.

Hint: You'll need 'instanceof' and cast to a (Geocache)

So far I have:

public boolean equals(Object O){
if(O instanceof Geocache){
Geocache j=(Geocache) O;
if (this.equals(j)) //I know this is wrong... but I can't figure it out
return true;
}

else return false;
}

I think I have it correct up to the casting but I don't understand what I'm suppose to do with the this.equals(). Also I'm getting an error that I'm not returning a boolean... I get this all the time in other problems. I don't get why since I have to instances of returning booleans in this. "returns true if the given object equals this object" makes no sense to me. I assume the given object, in my case, is 'O'. What is 'this' object referring to?

Calling Object Method From Another Object

Oct 26, 2014

I've been trying to learn Java for the last 36 hours or so (after applying for a HTML/CSS job saying "Java knowledge preferred"), and decided to experiment a bit making a graphical tic-tac-toe game. I eventually managed to get that done and it's working. Working code below:

[Java] tic tac toe 1 - Pastebin

So, it works to an extent, however, the way I am capturing which cell is selected seems very sloppy, and would not work if the cells weren't squares or rectangles. So I made a copy of the project and restructured it adding the mouse event to the cells, but now I can't get JComponent to repaint. New code below:

tic tac toe 2 - Pastebin

Curiously, clicking triggers the action for all 9 cells, but I presume it's because I haven't bounded them making it think I've clicked all 9 simultaneously.

What I've tried:

Make the Cell class extend the game class and call this.repaint()- causes stack overflow.

Calling Game.GameState() within the cell clicking event and making that function static - compiler doesn't like calling repaint() inside a static function.

Making another class to make a clone of the Game object and then refresh- was never going to work....

Find A String And Display Line Number And Line Itself?

Oct 20, 2014

I'm creating a program that searches a txt file for a given string, then return the number line and the line itself. However, my testFile class isn't detecting my searchWord methods.

The searchWord and recursiveSearch is written in a java class called BasicFile

public List<String> searchWord(String key) throws Exception {
LineNumberReader lnr = new LineNumberReader(new FileReader(f));
return recursiveSearch(lnr.readLine(), key, lnr);
}
public List<String> recursiveSearch(String currentLineText, String key, LineNumberReader lnr)

[code]....

Is it because I'm using a list instead of a string?

Scanning Next Line Of Input Without Advancing Past Line

Apr 12, 2014

I'm doing an assignment for uni and have come across a small hiccup. What I'm trying to do is scan in a text file and read "commands" for it line by line, E.g:

Student Mary 12345 19
Student Joe 12346 19
Change Joe 19 20
Change Mary 19 20

So that lines that begin with the word "Student" indicate that I should create a new student file with that name, student ID, and age.

"Change" indicates that I should be changing the specified student's current age to the new age etc.

What I'm currently doing is something along the lines of this:

Scanner input = new Scanner(new FileReader(args[0]));
String[] line;
while (input.nextLine().startsWith("Student")) {
line = input.nextLine().split("s+");

[Code] ....

The problem I'm having is that every second line seems to be getting skipped (because I'm calling nextLine() so much?) but I can't think of a way to "peek" at the first word of each line without advancing past it. Is there any way of doing this?

Object Method Override

Mar 7, 2014

I read the following comment at stackoverflow.com. It is not clear to me why equals in the code below does not override - i looked up Object class equals() and the signature is same.

public class Foo {
private String id;
public boolean equals(Foo f) { return id.equals(f.id);}
}

This class compiles as written, but adding the @Override tag to the equals method will cause a compilation error as it does not override the equals method on Object.
