View RepliesThe objective of my program is to read a file called input_data.txt and to calculate an invoice in which my program will print the results in a formatted text file. I haven't advanced to this step yet because I'm having trouble checking my ArrayList for a certain string. The reason I am searching for "duration" is so that my program will know when the heading is complete.
Here is the sample input file given:
account_number start_time_of_call duration
10011A 21:50 20.2
10011A 13:23 12.3
10033C 23:00 34.0
00101B 10:23 45.1
Eventually, I must separate the fields and calculate payment prices based on the duration and time of the calls.

I have a regular expression that I created and tested on some regex site, [URL] .... It worked on the test site but I can't get it to work in Java.
The code is:
String s = "MyString.ext_CAL3";
assertTrue("Didn't Match", s.matches("_CAL[0-9]+$"));
This test always fails. I cannot figure out what is wrong with it. In fact, I can't get any match no matter what regex I use.
so my task is to write a code which would ask user to input the year as integer and first three letters of the month with first being an upper case letter. Than the program would determine the number of days for given year and month.
Currently I have a brain crash on how to check, if the user has provided the month with first character being upper Case. If not, than the program would automatically correct the character. Problem starts at line 17.
import java.util.Scanner;
public class DaysOfMonth4_17 {
public static void main (String[] args) {
//Initiate scanner
Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
//Ask for year input and use is as INT
System.out.println("Enter the year");

The project is a program that allows the user to enter students and enter grades for each student. One of the requirements is that if there is already a grade stored for the student that it will display the previous grade. IF the user then enters a new grade the new grade will be stored. IF the user simply presses enter (enters an empty string) nothing is done. I have everything working except for the requirement of doing nothing if the user enters an empty string. If I just press enter at this point I get a NumberFormatException.
The below code is a method "setTestGrades" from the student class. This method iterates through each student object stored in an array list and then checks if there is a previous grade (Requirement# unset grades have to default to -1) before allowing the user to set a new grade.
public void setTestGrades(int testNumber) { //Sets the grade for the specified test number for each student in the arraylist.
testNumber -= 1;
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
for (int i = 0; i < studentList.size(); i++) {
System.out.println("Please enter the grade for Test #" + (testNumber + 1) + " For Student " + studentList.get(i).getStudentName());

I am trying some exercises on codingbat.com, and am stuck at the following program.
"Given a string, return true if it ends in "ly"."
With the following lines, if I type a print command instead of return, I get "ly". Yet if I aks to compare the result (which is "ly" as I can see with a print command) with == "ly", I get false?
What I also don't get, is that if I tye the programs in javascript, in that language the program works.
String str = "Oddly"
return ((str.substring(str.length()-2))== "ly");
}
I'm looking to get two values from this string. I have tried re formatting and with little success. I read this in from a text file and then tried the below code to extract it. I have also tried
{Deposit=100.00, Fees Paid=5.00}
I am just looking to get the 100.00 and the 5.00. I tried using this code below but it separated it into Comma and put it in an array which is probably what im not looking for.
[code]
final Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile("[=st]");
final String[] result = pattern.split(st2);
System.out.println(Arrays.toString(result))

What does the line Console[] conList mean? How am I going to access the string values in class consolelist?

In Java is there a method which I can use to compare two Strings where in if both the values are null, they should be considered as equal?
View Replies View RelatedI'm having an issues with adding integer values to a string list. The question is asking me "the method should iterate over runners, and for each runner generate a random number between 90 and 180 (inclusive) which should be used to set the time (in minutes) for that runner."
I have been able to get the random number and iterating over the runner arraylist but I haven't been able to figure out how to add the values generated into the runners list. I am also using BlueJ.
Here's the whole code I have at the moment:

I must write a method that accepts a string and returns an int. The method should sum the unicode values of each character, so the string "ABC" should return 198. Also the only string class methods I'm aloud to use are length, charAt, and substring. I just don't know how the get the Unicode value.
View Replies View RelatedI am trying to match the input string with range of values and getting PatternSyntaxException. below is my code
public static void main(String[] args) {
String regex="01[4-6]";
String code="015";
boolean bool=code.matches(regex);
System.out.println(bool);
}
output: true
But when i try to give range in double digits, it throws exception. What if i have to match a number(as string) between 10 to 25 or like that.
public static void main(String[] args) {
String regex="0[14-16]";
String code="015";
boolean bool=code.matches(regex);
System.out.println(bool);
}
Output:

I'm new to java. I have a Product class with getters and setters.
E.g. setProdType & getProdType
I want to store the values from a file into that
StringTokenizer token = new StringTokenizer(line,"**");
while(token.hasMoreElements()) {
int p.setProdType = Integer.parseInt(token.nextElement().toString());
}
I have a assignment to do some Lexigraphic ordering. I have figured how to get the majority of this done, however, when I input my string values. No output takes place? :s
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Lab03c {
public static void main(String[] args) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Scanner lexi = new Scanner (System.in);
String s1,s2;

Currently, my program converts Long values to String. And when I test it out, it do print out the correct output. However, when the converted String value is passed over to be written in a text file, it seems that BufferedWriter isn't printing out the outcome that it's supposed to be.
saltVs = Long.toString(saltV);
System.out.print(saltVs); //will print out 79723172
Now the problem is here...It only prints out the last digit of the String value (instead of 79723172).
Here is my FileWriter/BufferedWriter part.
Why is that when I run my program using command prompt, it prints out the output that I wanted, but however when it comes to writing to the file, it doesn't come out right.
My intention is to see the real reference values (memory locations) of 2 StringBuilder objects as below:
StringBuilder sb2 = new StringBuilder("123");
StringBuilder sb3 = sb2;
System.out.println(sb2);
System.out.println(sb3);
I was expecting a printout like
@S234853
@S984724
But all I got was 123 printed twice. How can i print out the reference values instead of what is inside the StringBuilder object ?
I'm trying to find the int with the lowest value, and I only know how to set it up like this:
Let's say x1 is the lowest.
int x1, x2, x3, x4;
if (x1 < x2 && x1 < x3 && x1 < x4) System.put.println("x1 is the lowest value out of those 4");
Is there a way to shorten this at all? (It's alright if there isn't, just looking for shortcuts)
//checks wether an int is prime or not
public static void main(String[] args) {
int n = 17;
boolean prime = true;
if (!(n==2)) {
for (int i = 2; i * i <= n; i++) {
if (n % i == 0);

I just can't find a way to check if user puts any input or not? The line is Employee Name and I need to validate that he puts something there.

String empName;
Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);

I want get a specific document from data set if a given string matches in that document.
If given string is 'what is java' and,
doc1='... what is full form of java ...'
doc2='... is java what ...'
doc3='... what is java ...'
then the output should contains doc1, and doc3.
I'm trying like this.
for(String key_word: key.split("W+")) {
for (String _word : line1.split("W+")) {
if(word.toLowerCase().equals(key_word.toLowerCase())) {
key_final=key_final+" "+key_word;
}
}
}
I'm getting wrong output containing doc1, doc2 and doc3.But I want only the exact match. Here each document is containing some paragraphs.
I have a programming assignment in which I have to make a program which loads a crossword from a Properties file and then, when the user press a button, the program checks if the letters the user has typed in the interface are the same as in the correct matrix. If all the letters from a word are correct, the program must paint every letter of the word green.
I'm using two matrix, one that is called "mundo" (I 'm from Latin America) , which has the correct letter for each box. The other one is a JtextField matrix which ='ve created using a Gridllayout. I called this one crucigrama (crossword in Spanish)
This is the code I wrote to validate: So you can understand, here is a translation:
numero = number
fila = row
column = columna
bien - a boolean I used to check if the letter I've checked before are the same as the correct ones
.darLetra() - returns a string with the correct letter
[Code] .....
which method i can use so that the program checks if the input value is a digit or else outputs a message saying that `the value entered is not a number.

I'm up to an app which includes Alarm clock in it. User selects the date using JSpinners and My Alarm clock class checks if the current date is equal to the selected date and pops up an alarm. That's all i've done so far. What i want is some ideas about how can i manage these alarms in my app. What i think is:
* Getting alarm dates from user and save it in database and creating a thread which runs always and check database whether there is an alarm... (will it make my app) ??
In simple words how to continuously check for upcoming alarms and popup any time any alarm comes up during my app is running
Note: My App is not only about alarms, it also contains a complete management system.
I have to make ask for 2 houses or more (INSTANSED CLASS, with 2 ints ) with the same size(int ), but i they cant use the same door number(int). how do i check in my ArrayList that they have different numbers while not caring about different size? .
The ArrayList is in a class called system. I dont know if i should try to Override the equal or try something else.
