Class File Compiled In Linux Mint Does Not Work On Windows
Dec 20, 2014
Is Java really cross platform programming language?
I compiled a .java file and tested it on linux mint, then I tried to run it on windows vista but it did not run.
The message is: Error: Could not find or load main class myClassName.
The JDK is 8

There is a specific function I have added to a program I've been working with for a while which involves retrieving data from a website. Here is that code:
Java Code: public String getWebData(String urlString, String add) throws IOException{
String output = "";
try {
//+s being the token, for example if dictionary.com was being used
add = add.replace(" ", "+s");
urlString = urlString + add;
URL url = new URL(urlString);
InputStream inputStream = url.openStream();
[code]....
Anyway, when I run this program within Netbeans, it works perfectly. I have a backup of the project in eclipse as well, and I've copied all of the code over and tried running the same thing in Eclipse - exactly the same, it works perfectly. The problem is whether I compile the the code in Netbeans or Eclipse, the exported runnable jar for some reason has an issue with this one method. It doesn't crash, and it seems to be doing something, but it is by no means giving me the data from the website like it is supposed to.

I'm trying to run a command line executable file using java but there is no output. On the task manager a conhost process opens when the application is run. I've tried
1)try {
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("D: est.exe");
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
2)String[] cmd = { "D: est.exe"};
Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
p.waitFor();
and
3)//Runtime.getRuntime().exec("D: est.exe", null, new File("D:"));
same thing happens i.e. nothing happens.

The output i m getting after second command is :

at acm.program.Program.main(Program.java:1358)
I know the problem is from the RandomGenerator class in packet acm.util.* but i dont know how to fix the problem . Every other program has worked . What I am missing or how this whole issue of packet importing works when running a java file from cmd ?

I'm running a jar of an application and library jars from lwjgl. I'm creating a java process. It's working on Windows but not on linux.
I tried replacing the semicolons with colons but it didn't work, it just said "Main class not found: Application.natives.linux" or something like that. gamePath is the path the application is in. osName is the name of the operating system.
Here's my code:
String jarRunner = String.format("java -Djava.library.path="%snatives/" + osName + "" -cp "%sjar/lwjgl.jar;%sjar/lwjgl_util.jar;%sjar/jinput.jar;%sjar/slick.jar;%sApplication.jar" main.Main", gamePath, gamePath, gamePath, gamePath, gamePath, gamePath);
Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(jarRunner);
[Code] ....
How can I make it work on linux?

I've just got a new computer and i tried to set the class path the way i did with windows xp but it's not working. This is what i have done. I added a Path variable to user variables and added C: Program Files (x86)Javajdk1.6.0_20/bin as the variable value. But when i got to command prompt and type javac HelloWorld.java it just tells me javac is not recognised as an internal or external command.
Also another problem is after trying this and it not working i tried to add a path to the system variables. I added a new path variable but i think once i did that it deleted the one that was already there. Is that going to mess up my computer? What the default path variable for windows 7 is?i've got the right destination as i typed cd to change directory and when i typed C: Program Files (x86)Javajdk1.6.0_20/bin it changed to that. And i noticed if i typed in the destination wrong its just made an error.

I've added a small program that reads from a .txt file to the windows 8 startup folder using a .bat file ... The problem I have Is I've used relative paths for text files In the program and It doesn't work unless I change them to absolute paths.
The .bat file Is basically java -cp[absolute path to program directory] ReadAFileApp . Is there something (most likely yes!) I'm missing here ?

I have a properties file with key values in it, now when I use my search box to search for a key in the properties file to check whether or not it is there - I can't get it to check and return the key value if it is theere. I've tried a few methods but keep getting a null pointer exception when it hits line 15 in the code all the time so I'm stumped at the minute.
My text field is called textFieldSearch
This is my button code
JButton btnSearch = new JButton("Search");
btnSearch.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
//search button
//find selected comman
String key_name = textFieldSearch.getText();
[Code] ....
This is my method code
public void FindSelectedKey()
{
if(textFieldSearch != null)
{
properties.getProperty(key_name == textFieldSearch)
}
}

I'm trying to read a xml file and delete it's contents. I do this by reading the file,writing it to a temp and then overwriting the original with the temp by renaming it
//overwrite original xml file with new file
boolean successful = outputFile.renameTo(inputFile);
System.out.println("success");
It does say the value of the local variable is not used however. I've debugged to ensure it hits the code it always prints out the line after too.It just does not overwrite my original xml file with the temp one.
It's had votes on stack so I thought that would of been reputableStack - overwrite but the second one got voted as a good answer. But still I would like to know if my code can work or not.

i am fairly new to java but have made a few projects so i do know most aspects that would allow me to complete the task its just i have been stuck at the same place now for 2 days.The project is to create a java program that can read specific data within a csv file to work out the averages etc. The csv file is a database of different weather stats . an example of the first 12 months of the csv file is below..
[CSV FILE]
year ,month,average rainfall etc
1946 15.70.616108.131.5
1946 28.23.56111.871
1946 38.82932.9 102.9
1946 414.16.3029.2 150.5
1946 513.96060.7 143.6
[code]...
I know that once the data is indexed i can than use a double to find the average of the 12 specific pieces of data and so on. once this is complete i should than be able to transfer the data to a simple graph.

I am trying to install Java on my Debain based Linux OS and can`t seen to figure it out. I first typed "chmod +x jdk-8-nb-8-linux-i586.sh", than typed "./ jdk-8-nb-8-linux-i586.sh" to install it. It started to install, but than it gave my this message: (computer name has been changed)
bobsmith@bobsmiht-OptiPlex-GX620:~/Downloads$ ./jdk-8-nb-8-linux-i586.sh

Most probably the bundled JVM is not compatible with the current platform.
How do I fix this? My Linux computer is not connected to the internet, I don`t know if this is a problem or not.

Visual effects such as Transitions perform very poor on linux "wheezy" compared to windows. I noticed this on different PC's, checked for Java7 and Java8. If the UI contains many objects then the transition sometimes does not even appear.
I do not think this is graphic card related since videos play quite ok.
I use the default ATI driver without Xorg.conf file and installed the xcompmgr
and tried several options, such as
Option "Composite" "Enable"
or
Option "backingstore" "true"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
This did not speed up things, are there other things that I could do to improve the performance ?
