Code That Prompts For And Reads In The Number Of Coins In One Of The Piles

Oct 26, 2014

I'm very new to writing code (college freshman) and I need a code that prompts for and reads in the number of coins in one of the piles, as well as a String containing a single letter to indicate the type of coin in that pile: "P" for pennies, "N" for nickels, "D" for dimes, and "Q" for quarters. The program then computes the value of that pile of coins and prints it out. Here's what I have so far:

import java.util.Scanner;
/**
This program reads a student's final class average,
and prints out the appropriate letter grade..
*/
public class Coins
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
// Define constants

Java Lotto - Randomly Generate Five-digit Number And Prompts User To Enter Five-digit Number

Sep 25, 2014

1. Write a Java program that randomly generates a five-digit lottery number and prompts the user to enter a five-digit number. Each digit in the number is in the range between 0~9. The program should determine which prize the user wins according to the following rule:

- The user wins the first prize if the user input matches all five digits in the lottery number in exact order.
-The user wins the second prize if the user input matches any four digits in the lottery number in exact positions.
-The user wins the third prize if the user input matches any three digits in the lottery number in its exact position.
-The user wins the fourth prize if the user input matches any two digits in the lottery number in its exact position.

- The user wins the fifth prize if the user input matches any one digit in the lottery number in its exact position.here is my code. I have tried replacing the && statements with || and it always returns either case 1 or case default.

ProductCatalog That Prompts User To Enter Number Of Products

Feb 11, 2015

Write a program called ProductCatalog that prompts the user to enter the number of products in the product catalog. The program should then prompt the user for the name and the price of each product in the product catalog. Once all of the products have been entered, the program should output the product information (name and price) of the most expensive product in the catalog. Your solution must use a for loop repetition structure and should use the Product class included in labfiles05.zip to keep track of the product with the highest price. Here is sample output:

Enter the number of products: 3
Enter the name of product 1: iPod
Enter the price of product 1: 158.99Enter the name of product 2: iPad
Enter the price of product 2: 518.99
Enter the name of product 3: iPadMini
Enter the price of product 3: 304.49
Most Expensive: Product [name=iPad, price=518.99]

Your solution should not use an array to keep track of all the product information entered.

I am having trouble with my code, with the For loop and then calling the methods from the Product class into the ProductCatalog. How should I approach this program.

Here is the Product program.

public class Product
{
private String name;
private double price;
public Product(String theName, double thePrice) {
name = theName;
price = thePrice;

[Code]...

Here is the ProductCatalog class where I call the methods from Product class. The For loop is what I am having trouble with as well.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class ProductCatalog
{
public static void main(String[] args) {
double number;
String product = " ";
double productCount = 0;

Tossing Coins For A Dollar Java Program?

Jan 29, 2014

The question is we have to write a class named Coin. The Coin class should have the following field:

A string named sideUp. The sideUp field will hold either "heads" or "tails" indicating the side of the coin that is facing up.

The Coin class should have the following methods:

A no-arg constructor that randomly determines the side of the coin that is facing up ("heads" or "tails") and initializes the sideUp field accordingly.

A void method named toss that simulates the tossing of the coin. When the toss method is called, it randomly determines the side of the coin that is facing up ("heads" or "tails") and sets the sideUp field accordingly.

A method named getSideUp that returns the value of the sideUp field.

Now we have to create a game program using the Coin class. The program should have three instances of the Coin class: one representing a quarter; one representing a dime, and one representing a nickel.

When the program begins, your starting balance is $0. During each round of the game, the program will toss the simulated coins. when a coin is tossed, the value of the coin is added to your balance if it lands heads-up. For example, if the quarter lands heads-up, 25 cents is added to your balance. Nothing is added to your balance for coins that land tails-up. The game is over when you balance reaches on dollar or more. If your balance is exactly one dollar, you win the game. You lose if your balance exceeds one dollar.

I think I've completed the Coin class but the game program is giving me problems. I got it to add the balances when they land on heads but it only does it one time. I'm trying to figure out how to input a loop but I haven't had any luck.

Vending Machine - Tell User Combination Of Coins That Equals To Amount Of Change

Jan 25, 2012

I have a simple java program to write which tells the user combination of coins that equals to the amount of change i.e:

user input 87

output:

3 quarters
1 dime
0 nickels
2 pennies

How the program remembers the remainder which is passed to the next column of let say dime

i.e

originalAmount = amount;
quarters = amount /25;
amount = amount % 25; <---- this is confusing for me?!?! how can the integer = integer % 25
dimes = amount / 10; <--- HOW THE PROGRAM remembers the "remainder" instead of the original user input as the code it self tells you dimes = amount where "amount" is what user input NOT remainder.

amount = amount % 10;
so on ....;

What I don't understand is HOW this algorithm works. I mean we have int amount where user inputs the number we get the first calculation amount/25 = how many quarters and then amount %25 WILL tell us about the reminder. By looking at this piece of code I would say that the system should start the calculation for the dimes again from the original number since the code says dimes = amount/10 AND amount = amount%10. My understanding is that the calculation should be done from the original user input.

Book or code it self is not clear for me how the reminder is "REMEMBERED" and then pass on to the next calculation>!?!?

UNLESS the code: amount=amount%25 gets the remainder so the next code under it is REQUIRED to read from the last prompt code.

Write Application That Reads Five Integers

Write an application that reads five integers, determines and prints the largest and smallest integers in the group. Use only the programming techniques you learned in this chapter. (which means: use only if statements and the equality and relational operators).If I want to solve this I will write nested if statements for every probability like the following.The probability: the first integer is the largest and the fifth integer is the smallest:

1>2>3>4>5
1>2>4>3>5
1>4>3>2>5
1>4>2>3>5
1>3>4>2>5
1>3>2>4>5

And so on for every probability.

How To Reduce Number Of Parallel Arrays In Code

Mar 8, 2015

I'm building a text based "game" where you are communicating with this android creature called Gargoid , at a VERY primitive level . how it works is, simply the user type in a sentence which is decoded for meaning by comparing it with a built in list of words in order to figure out what the user is saying, and then reply with a a relevant response also from a list of built in words. the whole thing would look something like this,

user: what is your name
Gargoid : my name is Gargoid, nice to meet you
user: how is the weather
Gargoid: the weather is wonderful

so far I have 11 arrays which are the following

String[] for user typed in words used for comparison to find meaning ..An Array of String[] , 7 so far, to hold what I call the Gargoid dictionary for example String[] greeting={hi,hello,aloha}, words that indicates greeting int[] called frequency to determine which of the 7 arrays have the greatest "relevancy" to what is being said. and finally another String[] for responses here's the actual code, I want you guys to tell me if there's a way to reduce all this never ending number of arrays? and also is this code a good application of object oriented programming?

MainClass
public class GargoidMain {
public static void main(String[] args) {
TheKeyBoard keyboard=new TheKeyBoard();
TheTranslator translator=new TheTranslator();

Reads Text File Consisting Of Words From A To Z

Apr 12, 2015

I am writing a program for my college class that does the following:

Reads a text file that consists of words from a-z. The content read from the file is displayed in the JTextArea, while the user can filter the search results based on what they input. For example, if the user enter's "a" then the JTextArea is updated with all words that start with the letter "a" only. Also the user can enter a substring or the whole word and the respective result will be only the words that match the user's input.

The Problem and question I have is what would be the best way to go about filtering a file of about 27,000 words based on user input. I tried using an arraylist but the problem is it took forever to update the JTextArea, which is not good. Also I am new to using JSwing so I may not be aware of a component that would make this easier.

Here is the code:

Note: the question lies within the actionPerformed method.

import java.awt.FlowLayout;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;

Write A Java Program That Reads 5 Integers

Oct 9, 2014

Project is due before midnight eastern time (3 more hours). I have been working on this all day, we have not learned arrays or anything and just started 'for' loops. I don't really know how to implement that system yet. However, he wants us to check all the possible handwritten math ways of doing this. I have tried but I cannot return my numbers beside the card.my program only prints the type and I still have more cases to add as well..

QUESTION: Write a Java program that reads 5 integers, each of which is in the range of 1 and 13 representing a simplified poker card with no suit. Your program should then print the ranking of the hand with card number(s) beside the ranking. The rankings to determine are Four of a Kind(4 of the 5 cards of the same rank), Full House(3 of the 5 cards of the same rank, and 2 cards of another rank), Straight(5 cards of sequential rank), Three of a Kind(only 3 cards of the same rank), Two Pair(2 cards of the same rank, 2 cards of another rank, and no card of either rank), One Pair(only 2 of 5 cards are of the same rank), and High Card(no two cards of the same rank). Some sample runs are:

input: 2, 3, 2, 2, 2; output: Four of a Kind(2)

But how can I incorporate the read text in to a java valid array in my program, which I can use?

Is this even possible?

- The average age of all employees (rounded to 2 decimal places).
- The oldest employee and his/her age.

Hints:

You could assume that the user will insert valid data and at least one employee.
You could assume that the oldest employee is only one person.
User could stop the program via entering the word "end" as an employee's name.

Sample Input and Output: In each line, insert an employee's name and his/her age To halt the program, insert "end" as an employee's name

Write A Code That Allows A User To Input Number Of Stones In A Basket

Nov 20, 2014

I am trying to write a code that allows a user to input the number of stones in a basket, then put the stones in my pocket, after the stones are in my pocket, the stones must be taken out, one by one, and thrown in a pond. I get stuck at this part because my for statement has to subtract the number of stones in my pocket (one at a time) and add a stone to the pond (one by one) at the same time.I can get the pond stones to increase until the max amount of stones with the following:

for (int i = 0; i < stones; i++) {

System.out.println("Pocket:" ? " " + "Pond:" + i);

how to reduce one and add to other. Is it possible to do this in one for statement? I tried to put stones-- in place of the question mark, but that is not working.

Write A Java Program That Reads A Positive / Non-zero Integer As Input

Aug 1, 2011

Write a Java program that reads a positive, non-zero integer as input and checks if the integer is deficient, perfect, or abundant.

A positive, non-zero integer, N, is said to be perfect if the sum of its positive proper divisors (i.e., the positive integers, other than N itself, that divide N exactly) is equal to the number itself. If this sum is less than N, the number is said to be deficient. If the sum is greater than N, the number is said to be abundant.For example, the number 6 is perfect, since 6 = 1 + 2 + 3, the number 8 is deficient, since 8 > 1 + 2 + 4, while the number 12 is abundant, since 12 < 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 6.

SAMPLE OUTPUT:

1.)Input N: 5

5 is deficient.

2.)Input N: 6

6 is perfect.

3.)Input N: 18

18 is abundant.

Application That Reads In A Line Length Followed By Individual Lines Containing Text

Jan 9, 2015

I'm currently learning Java and have been set an assignment that requires me to do the following:

Write an application that reads in a line length followed by individual lines containing text. No input line will be longer than the read in line length. In the text lines each word will be separated by a single space. The lines of text to be reformatted and then output so that the output lines of text have straight left and right margins. The last printing character in each line will be at character position (line length). In the text output the character '.' is to be used to represent the space character.

I'm trying to take this task on, but I'm unsure as to what exactly I'm supposed to do with part of it. For one of the methods I need to "work out how many extra spaces will need to be added to make the line width characters long.", how would I go about doing this?

JRE :: Windows 7 SSVAgent Prompts For Credentials

Nov 25, 2014

After installing jre 1.7update 51 on a system where a restricted user is logged on I'm getting constant prompts in IE10 from ssvagent.exe -old - high.

I have found that disabling the IE addon SSV Helper  solves this issue but it's unclear why this issue comes in the first place. A bug in jre or something else?

I have googled and the only solution that I have found is just disabling the addon manually or disabling it through gpo's

Disabling the addon is probably not the real fix but just a workaround.

I am afraid that this problem can come back again after updating IE in the future or if the addon will get active.
