I'm creating a small program to count the number of mouse clicks the user is inputting into a BlankArea for a school assignment. I just finished with making the program look nice and all so I was putting in a MouseListener to detect the clicks. However, when I tried adding a MouseListener to the code, the error in the title appeared.

Here's what's going on:

It contains the thread safe and program previously launched without mouse functionality(program appeared when there were no MouseListener components and thread safe had all static method stuff).

My variable numClicks counts all of the clicks on every button instead of each individual button and adds the cumulative total to the JTextField. What have I missed? If I click button1 twice, $14 appears in the text field, then if I click button2, $27 appears in the text field instead of $23. I though that numClicks would stop counting at the end of the curly bracket for that block of code?
Just run the following code and move the mouse next to the text of the button and you will see exactly what I am talking about. Any way to prevent this continuous flash?

I have a class Tile that extends JPanel within the constructor for Tile I have set the opacity to false so that I can place tiles atop each other and see parts of the tiles below and the background through those parts of the tile that are not being drawn on. This implies that I am using paintComponent within Tile to display the image of the tile I want shown on this object.
The tiles are stacking perfectly. But I find that if I click on a tile through the transparent area of another tile, it is the top tile (transparent area) that retrieves the mouse click. This makes perfect sense, but is there a way to allow the mouse click to pass through transparent portions of the JPanel?
I've considered writing my own method to determine if the mouse click was within bounds then if it was outside the bounds of the object, find a way to pass the click event to the tile below. But this would be extremely challenging if the tiles were implemented as donuts (with holes in the center) or as some other obscure shape with transparent sections.
I have a textField in which I have text in. The text is enter customer name. I would like for this text to disappear whenever the user clicks on the textField to enter a customer name. I am using the automated swing gui builder in NetBeans. Is their some sort of feature for this under properties of the text field? If not then what are my other options?
The gist of it is to create a very basic memory game. There are 12 buttons, each associated with an icon. Every button that you click will display the icon and will stay there until clicked again. I got the bulk of it taken care of, but my issue lies with switching the icons back and forth. I can get them to display one at a time, but when I click on a new button, all the icons except the button I just clicked don't display. Essentially, only one shows up at a time.

If I pick a number (price) at random, let's say 1 28, and I want to add 8 units to that value, I should end up with 2 4. I can do this using brute force, calculating remainders, etc, etc....
Write a method compressDuplicates that accepts a stack of integers as a parameter and that replaces each sequence of duplicates with a pair of values: a count of the number of duplicates, followed by the actual duplicated number. For example, suppose a variable called s stores the following sequence of values:
This new stack indicates that the original had 5 occurrences of 2 at the bottom of the stack followed by 2 occurrences of -5 followed by 4 occurrences of 3, and so on. This process works best when there are many duplicates in a row. For example, if the stack instead had stored:

It's supposed to count all of the duplicates in an array and print out how many occurrences of the value starting at whatever index, or if there are no duplicates state that. Basically:
No duplicates with value 1 beyond Index 0
There are 3 more occurrences of value 2 starting at index 1
There are 2 more occurrences of value 2 starting at index 2....

I was browsing around and I found a question asking to find how many times a word occurred in a sentence. I am using a hashtable, over kill yes but I need to use them more. However my counter is not working, not really sure why.You can see in the main method I have two repeating names but it returns 0.

I curious for tips for moving forward within my current code for my counting cards GUI interface. I need two labels one for the card deck, and the other for the randomized card face. When the card face shows, in the count value text field the value of the card is added. For each card this is to happen through until the whole deck. There is also a card count text field to count how many cards have been dealt out. Now with that being said, I am being held back by getting the two labels to show in my GUI, the buttons show, but I need getting the cards and its value to show and initialize, with the card count in the card count text field.

***When I look at this I understand that I'm being asked to finish the method, that I have 1 input, which is an "EasyReader" object called in and that I use a CharQueue object along with the method isEOLN( ) to grab characters from in while looking for an end of line and then sticking the values in the queue and then I can go through the queue and figure out the number of times that last character shows up in the queue. I just am at a loss on the "how".
I am creating a mad libs type program. This section of code is for the user to be able to make their own mad lib template (that people will be able to fill out later). The normal blanks in a mad lib are for verb, noun, adjective, adverb, etc. I cam up with 13 or so of these buttons, but it would be nice that if the user wants to add a button that they think we missed, such as 'Person in the Room' or 'Silly Location'...that the user would be able to do this. I sort of pictured there being a button that says 'add button' or something like that. Is there a ways to do this with the way I've set things up?

I have to take a user's input and count the number of vowels in a String. If I start with a lowercase vowel it gets counted, but if I start with an uppercase or different letter I get nothing. Either way, I can not get the counter to go higher than 1.

The method public static int steps(int posts, int stride) calculates how many strides can be taken to get back to posts. Let's say if the method is (12, 4), it takes only three steps. Now let's say the method has parameters (12,5), so it should be (5, 10, 3, 8, 1, 6, 11, 4, 9, 2, 7, 12). My method works for such examplse as (12, 4) or (12,3) or (6,2)... but how can I figure out (12,5)?
