I'm writing a program that dynamically updates an xml file as it is being edited. It needs an add function, delete, and save, and so far, I've gotten only the add function working properly. I've got a delete method that works when I run only that method, but not when I run the program as a whole. I don't get any exceptions or errors and I'm trying to edit the file via printwriter. It creates a new temporary file with the new xml with the deleted section and then overwrites the current .xml file. It runs flawlessly when I run only the delete method, but not when I run the program as a whole.
public static void removeFromFile(String file, String lineToRemove) {
try {
System.out.println("Removing: " + lineToRemove);
File inFile = new File(file);
if (!inFile.isFile()) {
System.out.println("Parameter is not an existing file");

I have studied about the hierarchy of exception classes in which Throwable class comes at the top and two of its direct subclasses are Error and Exception..I just want to ask if in some code snippet we throw an instance of Error or its subclass within the try catch block then will that be also called "exception handling" ? I am asking this because Error class is not a child class of Exception therefore cant be said an Exception, therefore handling the same should not be called exception handling

I created a GUI using Java with Buttons, Pictures and labels.When one of the buttons is pressed it increases the price, which can be seen by the labels increasing the necessary amount.What I would like to be able to do in my GUI is allow the user to record details of the sale and be able to display the sales of past customers to date, by this I mean when I click one of the buttons it will record the amount of that item into a file and when I press the another button, not the same button as the items, it will show the user the existing orders that have been taken in the past.
Here is my Code:
//Importing needed classes

Assume we have 2 files that are input.txt and output.txt Input.txt has Name||Age||email||contact No||Name1||age1||email1||contact No1||name2||Age2||email2||contact no2||etc...
initially the output.txt does not have any record.using a java program we have to make it as
Names in the input file:Name,Name1,Name2,Name3 Ages in the input file:Age,Age1,Age2,Age3 email id in the file: email, email1, email2 Contact no in the file:contact no, contact no1,contact no2

I am trying to learn how to use file input/output in addition to exception handling... The problem is my textbook wrote this chapter for a version of Java that hasn't come out yet, so everything I do "according to the textbook" doesn't work. any feedback on correcting these exception errors because I am not sure what is causing them or how to fix them.
I was able to have it display the name of the book in the Book.txt file, but when I added the second part if the file doesn't exist, that's when the errors came up and it wouldn't compile.
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class DisplayBook
{
public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
File book = new File("Book.txt");
FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(book);
[Code]...
These are the compilation error messages I am receiving: (I have managed to get it down from 7 errors to just 4, but now I'm stuck)
DisplayBook.java:15: error: unreported exception IOException; must be caught or declared to be thrown
while ((letter = in.read()) != -1) //if file exists, displays book title
^
DisplayBook.java:24: error: unreported exception FileNotFoundException; must be caught or declared to be thrown
[Code] ....
4 errors

I'm not too familiar with serialization.It actually I found at this site (Java - Serialization) says that it will write and read properties of an object. I'm not quite sure how this would work as I would have thought that writing it to a text file would just do a toString() when you wrote it, but the page seems to think otherwise, and also names it .ser or something instead of .txt.
I thought, maybe this would work with my idea for a notepad that could store a Font, font color, and other settings, for the file. It would be beyond normal notepads. However, could you do this for a file as it would store text plus other things.
The upshot of this is that the same file, I was hoping to be able to be read by regular text programs like Notepad. However, could Notepad read such a modified file? Also, if notepad wrote to it, would it destroy my font properties and stuff that I'd add to it?
Also, what does this mean:
Warning: Serialized objects of this class will not be compatible with future Swing releases. The current serialization support is appropriate for short term storage or RMI between applications running the same version of Swing. As of 1.4, support for long term storage of all JavaBeans™ has been added to the java.beans package. Please see XMLEncoder.
Originally, I was going to use FileAttribute or something like that but it looked hard to do and likely not what I wanted. However, this looks more like what I want, but I'd like to know. This could be a huge breakthrough for a lot of things I was hoping to do but never could think of an efficient way to do.
Update:This serializable thing works great for my text editor but it won't work too hot if another program like Notepad reads it as it will appear like gibberish, including the text.
I had thought of having it make two files, one regular, and one that was serialized, to deal with this, but this doesn't work if I try opening a file that another text editor created that might not have this other serialized version of the file.
Also, I haven't yet tried extending File itself yet. However, I still don't see how it would work the way I'd hoped.
In a way, I want it to be like a RTF with some things used to set te font of the text area when loaded but be able to deal with opening a file made by another text editor and also have another text editor be able to read it even if my text editor created it.

I have a file called statecapitals.txt that is read in, I want to store it in either a 2d array or hashmap and select a random state then Ask the user for the name of the capital. Then I want to Let them know if they are correct or not and have a choice to play as many times as they like. When they no longer want to play,I want to let them know how many they got correct and how many incorrect. I am not sure which would be better a hash map or 2d array and dont know where to start with each.
here is what the text file looks like:
Alabama - Montgomery
Alaska - Juneau
Arizona - Phoenix
Arkansas - Little Rock
California - Sacramento
Colorado - Denver

I have this program to see the occurrences of a character in a string stored in a text file. My text file has the following contents (as shown below):
P-P-N-N-L-V
N-R-U-S-R-Q
K-Q-E-L-E-A
A-J-B-G-E-F
F-E-L-Q-R-R
U-F-J-V-I-M
P-I-Q-K-B-K
U-N-L-F-O-B
M-A-N-M-H-O
P-Q-J-D-N-I
G-U-O-D-F-I
Q-M-M-B-C-Q
N-B-I-L-E-J
S-A-T-Q-H-U
C-L-G-U-J-M
R-P-V-M-A-A
C-R-A-V-L-B
M-U-Q-K-M-Q
E-I-C-H-V-J
J-N-N-K-R-P
As you notice, each character is seperated by a hyphen (serving as its delimiter). I want to only go through 10 lines in the text, instead of all 20 of them. So, I wrote the program in such a way that I intend to reach into the indices of each character in the text file. Since there are six characters in each line so that means there are 6 indices - and there are 10 lines I only want to go through. So, 6 indices times 10 lines equals 60 indices. Hence, there are only 60 indices I need to go through. In that manner, it's like I have gone through only 10 lines through that way.
It compiled perfectly fine but upon running it, I ran through an error in the black DOS screen that says
"java.lang.ArrayIndexOutofBoundsException: 6 ".
How do I work around that?
The code I wrote is shown below...
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class hotandcoldclusterdeterminer_test {
public static void main (String args [])throws IOException {
[Code]....

I am trying to add two bytes together in binary. The problem is that I need to print the carryover also. The printed result should be 8-bits long if the byte or the integer converted in binary is less than 8-bits the empty space should be filled with 0-s. I figured out how to print and add them, the part with the filling the blank with 0-s too. how to print the carryover. For example:
byte x =15;
byte y =9;
the output will be :
00011110 - carryover
x 00001111
y + 00001001

StringBuilder temp=new StringBuilder();
temp.append(input.charAt(0));

char previous=input.charAt(j-1);
char current=input.charAt(j);

When i try to store the xmldata in "CreateFiles.xml" file ,the file is not displaying in the corresponding folder.what is the reason for that?
