Normally, the height of the CENTER component (or position) is greater than that of the NORTH and SOUTH components in a BorderLayout.
Is it possible to increase the size of the SOUTH component and decrease the size of the CENTER position because the jcomponents I want to add in the SOUTH component are bigger? or shall I have to change the layout and use some other layout?

Sir, I'am new to Swing Programming. I have to create an application where an image is displayed on one Label. The same image has to be split in parts and stored in database pert wise. Later the user has to retrieve the entire image by viewing a small part of the image. I have already displayed the full image on the Label, now i don't know how to split the image and store it part wise in the database.

I successfully added a background image on the Panel but I can't create my JButton image on top of my background image.
ImageIcon piano = new ImageIcon("src/img/piano_backgrd.png");
JLabel backlabel = new JLabel(piano);
panel.add(backlabel, new Integer(Integer.MIN_VALUE));
backlabel.setBounds(0, 0, piano.getIconWidth(), piano.getIconHeight());
JButton volup = new JButton(new ImageIcon("src/img/volup.png"));
volup.setLocation(10, 0);
panel.add(volup);

I'm trying to make a method that takes an image and turns it into a tile image. So if the original image looks like this:
[URL] ....
then the output image should look like this:
[URL] ....
Here's a method that's supposed to do that but for some reason the output image looks the same as the original:
public static int[][] tile(int[][] arr){
int[][] tile = new int[arr.length][arr[0].length];
for (int i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
tile[i]=arr[i];
}
return tile;
}
I recently changed the method and the error message I'm getting is "bad operand types for binary operator '+'. Here's the method:
public static int[][] tile(int[][] arr){
int[][] tile = new int[arr.length][arr[0].length];
for (int i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
for(int j=0; j<arr[i].length;j++){
tile[j]=(tile[j])+(arr[i]);
}
}
return tile;
}

I am asked in my assignment to make a program that accepts a text file as an example a novel and i have to sort each word as a PERSON or ORGANIZATION or LOCATION or O as in Other , example :
Microsoft/ORGANIZATION ,/O Nelly/PERSON !/O '/O
Now we notice that microsoft is and organitzation and "," is Other and Nelly is a person's name and so on ..
Now I am asked to return the numbers of tags in the text which is 4 in our case because we have (ORGANIZATION,PERSON,LOCATION,OTHER)
My question here is my logic true ? And since i made a map of String,String ; Is there any way that i can get the size of the values in our case the values are the organization etc.. ?

I am just not sure of some theory in collections, ArrayList and LinkedList maximum capacity depends on the memory allocated to the JVM. But according to few people those list has a maximum capacity of Integer.MAX_VALUE.
According to my experiment, those list has a maximum capacity of Integer.MAX_VALUE since the get method of List accept a parameter of int primitive type (index of element), therefore we can conclude that the maximum capacity of List is equal to Integer.MAX_VALUE.
But what about the Map? get() method of map accepts object(the key of the map). So does it mean that the maximum capacity of Map depends on the memory allocated to our JVM? Or its maximum size is Integer.MAX_VALUE also just like Lists and Arrays? Is there a way to prove it? Is Map designed to hold infinite number of data (disregarding the heap memory space exception)?
And also about Stack, Deque? is it also the same as Map (in terms of maximum capacity)?

I have the textfile which has lines:
A B 2 midterm 100
C D 1 final 90
C D 1 midterm 90
A B 2 final 80
**NO ARRAYLIST IS ALLOWED!** And the textfile is passed into the method. How to get the size for the array non-randomly inside the method from the passed Scanner file?? What if you have lots of numbers of lines, so how could that be done?
I have doubts about this line Exam[] object = new Exam[12];
Java Code:
public static Exam[] readAllExams(Scanner s) throws ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException

String firstName = "";
String lastName = "";

Is it possible to compare 2 arrays as below if they have same size?
Int array[][] = new int[10][10];
array1[I] == array2;
Or assign the whole array to another array?
array1[I] = array2[I];
Suppose I have 2 arrays, 1 is old, and 1 is new.
I will do the calculation to update the new array.
Then, I will compare between the 2 arrays.
If they are the same, I will stop the calculation.
If they are not the same, I will assign the new array to the old array.
Then, I will do the calculation again until the old array and the new array are the same.
As I do not want to write a loop to compare and assign the value to the arrays. May I compare or assign the values to the whole array directly.

I am rather new to Swing, and I am building a game right now in which I need to display a pop-up window as a reminder for what commands exist within the game. I created a class extending JFrame for this and added all the information I need. However, for some reason, no matter how many different ways I try to set the size of this window (setSize(w, h), pack(), using a different layout, adding the compnents to a JPanel first and setting the preffered size of that, then adding the JPanel to the JFrame), it doesn't work. Instead of a window of my requested size, I get a tiny, maybe 100 x 100 pixel window that needs to be resized in order for its contents to be visible.

private int numberOfStudents;
private String[] students = new String[100];

I would like to create a component to detect the file being modify before process.is it the right way to detect the file modification based on file size value?
Below are the flow:
1. Get the file size of a file
2. Used file size value encrypt it with MD5 algorithm, and say it generated us encrypted value "0123sdf"
3. to avoid user modify the file content, before file process, we take the file and do the encryption with md5 again, if it return value "0123sdf", then we are sure it doesn't have modification.
my question:
a. is it the right approach to detect file modification?
b. what the library advise to use or using java.security.DigestInputStream will do?

I built a GUI and after testing it on various platforms I think I would like to make it bigger by a factor of 2.2 or so.
Is there an easy way to just enter the factor 2.2 and have the GUI change by that factor?
I have over 50 components in the GUI. Ideally each one would just enlarge by the factor including the fonts.
This was my first (and only so far) java program. I didn't know anything about layout managers. I used netbeans and it generated all the code.

I have created a java gui on Windows 7 with Eclipse EE, using a screen resolution of 1366 x 768. I used groups with specified boundaries. For example:
final Group g5_script_data = new Group(shell, SWT.BORDER_SOLID);
g5_script_data.setText("Current DB");
g5_script_data.setBounds(0, 0, 680, 380);
g5_script_data.setBackground(green);
The groups cover the whole screen.
However my colleague with a smaller resolution looses the far right of the screen.
As this is a proto-type and I'm new to Java I don't want to rework everything or convert it to say a grid layout until the proto-type is accepted and I can start from scratch with a real detailed design. It already has 6500 lines of source.
Just wondered what is my quickest/easiest way to get my app to display on a slightly smaller resolution. For sure it will not be anything silly. Something like 1280 x 768 to 1366 x 768 would do.

I come to the point: I just started to learn java through various manuals and in one of them I came across a declaration of an array that I do not understand:
int[][] multiArr = new int[2][];
the manual says that you can allocate the multidimensional array multiArr by defining size in only the first square bracket but I can't undestand how you can use this array. Seems to be no way to store data with it!

I'm working on an assignment that says the following.
" The array size is fixed in Listing 10.6. Improve it to automatically increase the array size by creating a new larger array and copying the contents of the current array to it.Implement the dropStudent method.Add a new method named clear() that removes all students from the course.
Write a test program that creates a course, adds three students, removes one, and displays the students in the course."
10.6 Listing
public class Course {
private String courseName;
private String[] students = new String[100];
private int numberOfStudents;
}
public Course(String courseName) {
this.courseName= courseName;
[Code]...
My Test Code based off of book
public static void main(String[] args) {
Course course1= new Course("Business");
course1.addStudent("Jay");
course1.addStudent("Silent Bob");
course1.addStudent("Dante");
course1.dropStudent("Jay");
[Code]....
My adjusted 10.6
public class Course {
private String courseName;
private String[] students = new String[100];
private int numberOfStudents;
}
public Course(String courseName) {
this.courseName= courseName;
[Code]...
The problem I'm having is, for the first part of the question where I need to automatically increase the array size. I'm really not great at this stuff. I have tried breaking it down, but can't "get it", I guess.
I assume, it'd be a loop that checks to see if the student array is full and if so, do the increaseArray() part, by maybe multiplying the student array and then assigning it. I just don't know how to do it haha.
My *best* attempt at the loop so far has been
if (students == students.length){
int bigArray = 2*students.length;
String increaseArray()= new String[students];
System.arraycopy(students, 0, increaseArray, 0, students.length);
students= increaseArray;
but,yeah... Doesn't seem to be right.
