While Loop To Perform Multiple Steps

Mar 20, 2014

Write a program that uses a while loop to perform the following steps: Comment by labelling each part: //Part A, //Part B, etc...

A.)Prompt the user to input 2 integers: firstNum and secondNum. Use 10 and 20.
B.)Output all odd numbers between firstNum and secondNum.
C.)Output the sum of all even numbers between firstNum and secondNum.
D.)Output the numbers and their square between 1 and 10.
E.)Output the sum of the square of odd numbers between firstNum and secondNum.
F.)Output all uppercase letters.

Again I am new to while loops and I am totally lost. I have just completed 8 other programs using if else statements and now trying to get the hang of loops.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class whileLoop {
public static void main(String[] args)

How To Perform Tasks Listed In Text File

Feb 12, 2015

This has three different classes in a package and the program itself is supposed to read and perform operations obtained from a txt file. However, I'm not even sure how to get it to perform the operations from the text file. I know that it can read the file as I was able to get the program to print the text found in the file when I ran the program with a test print to make sure that all content was being read. However, I am clueless when it comes to how to get the program to look at the text as commands.

How To Perform Row Operation - Store Data Into 2D Matrix

Sep 18, 2014

I am able to perform column operation but not able to perform row operation because i am not able to store data say a 2 matrix [][]. I need to store the data into a 2-D matrix. Here is my code:

Java Code:

import java.awt.List;
import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class colRowRead {

[Code] ....

I tried something like that:

for(int i=0; i<rows; i++) {
for(int j=0; j<cols; j++){
matrix [i][j]=textFile.get(i).split(" ");
//System.out.println(matrix[i][j]);
}
}
*/ mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

File col.txt is like this:

Java Code:
5 9 7 1 5
3 6 8 6 8
4 6 7 8 9
9 8 3 5 7 mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

I need to know how to automate a web browser (either Chrome, Firefox or Safari) to perform the following task.

Take a word from a .txt file housed on my hard drive,

1) put it into a search engine,
2) load the results,
3) click on/ open the first result,
4) open up an new tab and perform steps 1-3 again but with the next word from the .txt file. 4-5 second pauses are needed in between each step.

Additionally, I would like to automate the browser to close all the open tabs when a full stop is pulled from the .txt file.

I am using a macbook and 10.6.8 OS.

Generate Conditions To Perform Calculations On Whole Numbers?

> x numbers are positive and even

Adding Inputs To Table With Columns And Perform Calculations Later

Nov 22, 2014

I am trying to put together a small application in my spare time. Nothing major, but one thing I want it to do is accept a few inputs, and take those and add them to a table with columns for use later (printing, calculations, etc). I was originally looking at something like Jtable, but that looks just like an excel spreadsheet done Java, so not what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for something that's read-only, where I can insert data from input fields, and then perform calculations with the column data later.

Read Text File And Perform Operation On Specific Columns

Dec 9, 2011

I am somewhat of a java newbie (learned it awhile back and just getting back to programming some again.) I have a text file of data much larger than this, but here are the first ten rows and first 10 columns.

39755320111041730140.633038085-2.117082366149.069997
39850320111041730150.633038085-2.117082511148.309997
39955320111041730160.633037998-2.117082293149.509997
40055320111041730170.633037945-2.117082351149.239997
.......

I can read and write all the data back out to files. But I am not sure about a few things.

First would it be best to use BufferedReader and OutputStream such as:

public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
BufferedReader bReader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader ("testdata.txt"));
BufferedOutputStream bytesOut = new BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream ("outfile.txt"));

Second, I was then going to initialize an array but I might have 30 or more columns of data, of which I might perform and output only 10 columns to my output.txt file so is this a good way?

Third, I only want to perform operations (such as average the data, convert units or multiply two columns together) on 10 of the 30 plus columns and print out results to output.txt file. For example, In testdata.txt file above, I want to skip first seven columns. I then want to take column 8 and multiply by 100 then divide by 3 and output result to output file. I want to do same for column 9. Column 10 I want to multiply by different number (by 3.5).

Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Code Button That Get Selected Element From JComboBox And Perform Operations

Aug 6, 2014

i've spend an hour or two, pasting fragments from tutorials and nothing changed.

Well - i have GUI, that have JComboBox with two elements:
String[] fedoras = { "Fedora 19", "Fedora 20" };
JComboBox fedora_list = new JComboBox(fedoras);
fedora_list.setSelectedIndex(0);
fedora_list.setBounds(120,170, 170,25);
fedora_list.addActionListener(this);
this.add(fedora_list);

Below i have normal button (named Update) with "update" set as ActionCommand. This button after clicked should check which value from list is selected and perform different operations for that elements. But it's harder than i thought.

Code for update button:

public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
String cmd = e.getActionCommand();
(...)
else if ("update".equals(cmd)){
String selectedFedora = (String) fedora_list.getSelectedItem();
if (selectedFedora.equals("Fedora 19")) {

[code]....

- after user clicked Update button, button should check which value is selected in JComboBox (fedora_list).
- if Fedora 19 is selected and button clicked, then action in Xterm
- if Fedora 20 is selected, this same action in Xterm is performed, but for Fedora Linux 20

The problem is - i don't know hot to code Update button to check which value from fedora_list (JComboBox) is selected and perform other actions for every element on List.

Delete From ArrayList

Dec 7, 2014

I've this "program" that shall manage to register a dog, show a list of all registerd dogs and delete dogs from the list.. And I'm stuck at the latter one. So I've to classes, one for the dog and one for register/program. This is my main program

import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.ArrayList;
public class HundProgram {
private static Scanner tangentbord = new Scanner (System.in);
private static ArrayList<Hund> hundlista = new ArrayList<>();

[Code] ......

So, when I enter a name on a dog that exist on my list, it just jumps down to } else { and write that dog can't be found even if I write the exact name on the dog.

I can't see what I'm doing wrong, been trying out different methods now.

Design Calculator Using Stack Data Structure To Perform Additions / Subtractions / Multiplications And Divisions

Jul 18, 2014

I've beginning a new assignment and would like some feedback on my outline for the program. You are to design a simple calculator using the stack data structure to perform additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions. The user may enter an arithmetic expression in infix using numbers, parentheses and arithmetic operations (+, -, *, /). After an expression is entered, its postfix or prefix notation is displayed and then the result of the expression. You are required to design your own infix to postfix and infix to prefix conversions.

The professors example includes: SinglyLinkedList implementation, a Stack that implements Stack interface and extends SinglyLinkedList, a Node class, and StackApp -- in addition to the main class and the prefix/post-fix classes.

(The equation is entered/stored as a string variable)
System.out.println("Enter equation: ");
equation = input.next();
equation.trim();

(1.) Get the user input:
- evaluate the user input and use a stack to determine the correct prefix/post-fix notation.
- from the stack, pop each item:
a. account for '(' and ')' to push all operators and write all operands until ')', then pop/write
b. store new equation into a list (in prefix/postfix notation)

(2.) Display the list in both notations to the user.

(3.) Perform the calculation.Do you think it will be alright to calculate the original equation that was entered? It seems too much to then design a class that will then cycle through the polish notation and calculate according to that format.

Complicated ArrayList Function - Moving Between Fields Which A Player Can Perform Based On Game Rules

May 27, 2014

I have been working on this function and i can't get it to work. It's a little bit complicated so let me first explain what this is about:

1. As a little exam in my studies i have to program a halma console game with KI an stuff.

2. Everything is finished and works except for the Move-Calculation.

3. A Move is a Move from Field a to Field b which a player can perform in one round based on the game rules (Careful: We are not using the standard halma rules, we use different ones).

4. Class Move consists of the Starting Cell where the Figure before the Move stands and a target Cell where the figure will stay on at the Move end. It may include an Array of serveral Cells, the stop cells which the figure passes from start -> target since several jumps can be performed in one Move.

Valid Examples for Moves:

a -> b (From Field a to Field b)
d -> f through g,h,i (From Field d to Field f through the Field g,h,i

My Move Calculation where all possible Moves are calculated for a given figure consists of 2 parts. An expand() function which will generate all possible moves (works perfectly) and a jumpFix() function which isn't working properly.

Example:

After expand() I'm getting something like that:

a -> b
b -> c
c -> d
s -> t

This is however not finished, because the first 3 Moves are actually 1 Move. Because the player can Move from a -> d in one turn because those 3 are consecutive Move. The fixed Move would look like that:

a -> d through b,c

jumpFix() is also perfectly working for that situation, however there is one specific situation when it doesn't work. Let's say we have this situation.

a -> b
b -> c
c -> d
b -> e
e -> f
f -> g
s -> t

Then the only valid jumpFix() output would be:

a -> d through b,c
a -> g through b,e,f
s -> t

However i can not get it to work yet. Note: It definitely needs to be iterative, not rekursive else i would get an StackoverflowError.

This is my current Code of jumpFix():

Java Code:

/**
* Takes a look into all calculated moves and finds those which should be seen as one move, but are still considered to be more than one move (several jumps in one move)
*/

public static List<Move> jumpFix(List<Move> moves) {
Set<Move> result = new HashSet<Move>();
Set<Move> remove = new HashSet<Move>();
int lastSize = -1;
// repeat action until no moves could be merged
while (lastSize != remove.size()) {

[Code] ....

How to implement the special case where a Move splits into 2 or more branches and jumpFix() able to handle this case.
