How do I make a method that can seperate parts of a String. The String is [name,aid]... example [John,5],
I want to remove [ , and ] from the String... How can I do this?
This is what i've done this far:
static public String splitta(String tf)
{
String part1 = "";
String part2 = "";
String part11 = "";
String part22 = "";
String part111 = "";
String part222 = "";
String[] parts = new String[2];
[Code] ....
This dosn't work, it wont compile... It states the following:
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 1

I'm trying to make a simple Caesar cipher that takes in a String as the first argument and a integer shift as the second argument. Namely, there appears to be a problem with the loop and how I have declared the array - I want the converted characters to be put into a new array called newCharacterArray, converted back to a String and displayed in the command prompt window.
public class Caesar {
public static void main(String inString, int k) {
System.out.println("String: " + inString);
char inStringArray[] = inString.toCharArray();

I am writing the following program in Java SE 7. It throwing "Cannot make a static reference to the non-static type String" . However if I write parameterised String inside main method as java.lang.String[] args, it compiles fine.
class MainClass<String> {
<T> MainClass(T t) {
System.out.println(t.getClass().getName());
}
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("asdasd");
new MainClass<>("");
}
}
I mean following programs compile fine in Java SE 7 :
class MainClass<String> {
<T> MainClass(T t) {
System.out.println(t.getClass().getName());
}
public static void main(java.lang.String[] args) {
System.out.println("asdasd");
new MainClass<>("");
}

We are making a tic tac toe game for my CS120 class and I am having trouble figuring out how to make our X's and O's. Is there a way to make shapes besides making two lines for an X and an oval with a white smaller oval inside to make an O? We have only learned the basics so far in class (i.e. events, inheritance, client-supplier, etc.)
These are our instructions:
Write a controller that controls the game. There is one human player (the X player) and the computer player (the O player). The name of the class must be TicTacToeController. In a sense, the controller is the game since the controller will 1) create a TicTacToeModel 2) create a TicTacToeView and 3) create a TicTacToeButton (you must write this class following the design pattern covered in class lectures), a label, and text field such that when the button is pushed, the player moves into the cell selected by the text field. After every player move, the computer moves into a randomly selected empty cell. When the game is over, a text message must be displayed somewhere on the screen the gives the status of the game. While you are free to change the appearance of the controller, the basic elements must be provided (a view of the game, a button, and a text field to enter the cell). A sample screenshot is displayed below.And this is the code i have thus far:
[import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.JFrame;
public class TicTacToeView extends Rectangle
public TicTacToeView(int x, int y, int w, int h) {
super(50,60,w,h);
this.setBackground(Color.red);
JFrame win = new JFrame("Tic Tac Toe");
win.setBounds(10,10,w+100, h+100);
win.setLayout(null);
win.setVisible(true);
win.setBackground(Color.gray);

Basically the problem is I've been trying to loop my switch (if this is even possible) until the user enters a correct number between 1 and 4. But for some reason when the user enters a correct number (1,2,3,4) the loop runs again. Even when the user enters a wrong number the switch ignores the default and repeats what is in the do.
Am I just trying to loop something that cannot be looped or have I gone?

class mammals {
int age;
int death;
String name;

I am trying to add a while loop into my switch statement. If you run the program, it will ask to enter the class grade (9,10,11, or 12). If you insert 5, it will say to try again. But, if you enter a wrong number twice, it will continue on to the next part of the program, which is asking how many students are in the class. Therefore, I believe a while loop would work, but it is not working at all. The program still runs, just doesn't fix the error. The program is below:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class stephProject {
public static void main(String[] args) {
//call method
welcomeMessage(); //method 1 of 3

Write a program to calculate sales and visually display. An online Cowboy retailer sells five products whose retail prices are as follows:
Product 1: Cowboy Boots, $74.99
Product 2: Wranglers, $25.99
Product 3: Cowboy Hats, $24.95
Product 4: Chaps, $ 34.89
Product 5: Spurs, $12.50
Write an application that reads the quantity for each product until user has completed their order. Your program should use switch, if, for, while and do while statements to read, calculate and display the total retail value of all pro ducts sold for each user transaction. The user should be able to start a new transaction after the first transaction is completed. The user can make no more than 3 total orders
public class Merchandise {
private int bootsQTY;
private int wranglersQTY;
private int hatsQTY;
private int chapsQTY;
[Code] ....
When I run my program all of my quantities and the total are 0, I have been stuck for a while trying to figure out how to get values assigned to them...

I have create as short example which contains two classes Cat and Dog followed by a switch statement in the main method.
Class Cat
public class Cat {
private String name;
//Setter
public void setName(String pName)
{name = pName;}
//Getter
public String getName()
{return name;}
// Constructor
public Cat(String catName)
{name = catName;}

My Issue is that after creating the objects within the switch statement, is there a way to return the objects back to the main method once created within the switch ?

I was making this program and I ran into an issue which is that I cant seem and understand how to get the numbers to go to the other side of the table
I had to make a program that converted 1-9 miles to kilometers and the other side 25-65 (increments of 5) kilometers to miles and thats the part I am having trouble with.
Here is what I have so far
import java.util.Scanner;
public class MilesAndKilos {
public static void main(String[] args) {
int miles;
double kilometers=1.60934;
[Code] ....
and this is how I want it to look
MilesKilometersKilometers Miles
1 1.609 | 25 12.430
2 3.219 | 30 15.538
3 4.828 | 35 # here
4 6.437 | 40 # here
5 8.047 | 45 # here
6 9.656 | 50 # here
7 11.265 | 55 # here

I am new to Java and I am trying to use values that are set for cases in the switch operator.
The first menu ask for you to pick a product and each product has a price on it.
The second menu ask you to pick a state with each state having a decimal value on it.
The third is asking you to put the number of cases and each case is 12 items.
A key note to remember is that each part that a person is choosing is on a different instance!
Here is an example of what i am trying to do.
Menu 1: I picked case 1 that is Computer and it is worth 1000
Menu 2: I picked case 1 that is CT and it's tax is 7.5
Third choice: I picked case 1 and that has 12 items
I want the subtotal witch is: (1000 * 12)
Subtotal in this situation is: 120000
Next i need the total value which is based on what state they picked for the tax percent value picked from the state menu case: (12000 * 0.075 + 120000)
Total value is: 129000
I will post the code I have but based on the choices a person makes will determine the values and I need those values set in the cases to put in a math equation. The problem I am having is retrieving these numbers form the cases inside the menu options and they are on a different instance. So How can I do this in Java code?
Here is the code:
This is menu 1
Java Code:
import java.util.*; //scanners and more
class menu{
public void display_menu() {
System.out.println ("Please select your product"); //Gives user direction
System.out.println ( "1)
[Code] .....
