Placing Randomly Chosen Words From Text File Into 2D Array

Apr 5, 2014

I have an assignment for college that involves placing randomly chosen words from a text file into a 2-d array. I have nearly completed ithowever I am having difficulty with a list of string type.What I have done so far is below,

import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.io.*;
import java.lang.Math;

[code]....

when I try to run an instance of the program(using BlueJ) I get an error saying there is a null pointer exception at line 35 which is wordsForGrid. add (puzzleWords.get(pos));

I am thinking that this is related to the fact that at this line in the loadWordsFromFile method List <String>words=new ArrayList<String>(); I could not create an empty list of string type, i.e List<String>words = new List<String>();

Is this correct? Or am I looking in the wrong place. The textfile I am using contains over 6000 words on a separate line for each if that makes any difference.

Create Permutation Method Where J Is Chosen Randomly From 0 To I

Apr 16, 2015

I need figuring this problem out. It appears that I am attempting to generate a permutation of the string "ABCDEF" 720,000 times using this method:

In the second method, j is chosen randomly in the range from 0 to i (inclusive).

Once the permutations are generated, the program will proceed in counting the number of times each permutation occurs, calculating the chi square statistic of the situation, and creating the chi square distribution with 719 degrees of freedom, then outputting the statistic and the chi square probability of the permutations. The generatePermutation method is where all the magic happens. Only trouble, I can't figure out what I equals to. The times where I think I have i as a correct value only give me the program outputted as 1.0 probability every time. What it needs to be doing is outputting variable probability as a number always between 0 and 1, not 1 all the time. Here is my code:

assignment7part2.java:
package math3323assignment7;
import java.util.HashMap;
import java.util.Map;
import java.util.Map.Entry;
import java.util.Random;
import org.apache.commons.math3.distribution.ChiSquaredDistribution;
import com.google.common.collect.Multiset;
import com.google.common.collect.TreeMultiset;

[Code] ....

i is meant to step through the index of the array, but I can't figure out what i is.

Reads Text File Consisting Of Words From A To Z

Apr 12, 2015

I am writing a program for my college class that does the following:

Reads a text file that consists of words from a-z. The content read from the file is displayed in the JTextArea, while the user can filter the search results based on what they input. For example, if the user enter's "a" then the JTextArea is updated with all words that start with the letter "a" only. Also the user can enter a substring or the whole word and the respective result will be only the words that match the user's input.

The Problem and question I have is what would be the best way to go about filtering a file of about 27,000 words based on user input. I tried using an arraylist but the problem is it took forever to update the JTextArea, which is not good. Also I am new to using JSwing so I may not be aware of a component that would make this easier.

Here is the code:

Note: the question lies within the actionPerformed method.

package source_code;
import java.awt.Color;
import java.awt.Dimension;
import java.awt.FlowLayout;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import java.io.BufferedReader;

Placing Numbers Inside Array

Read Text File Into Object Array And Creating Random Access File

Dec 8, 2014

I am working on a project that requires me to build a database with random access file, representing products, the base product contains a name (about 30 characters), a price (double), and a quantity (integer). I have worked on this project for probably 15+ hours and have tried so many things and feel like I've barley made any progress...

The part i am really struggling with is taking the data from the text file and creating an object array with it using the product class. Once ive accomplished that, i have to use that data to create a random access file with the data.

Here is the base Product class that must be used to create the objects for the array.

public class Product
{
public String pName;
public String stringName;
public double price;
public int quanity;

[Code] .....

And then here is the data from the text file that i must extract to use to create product objects.

Dill Seed,938,34
Mustard Seed,100,64
Coriander Powder,924,18
Turmeric,836,80
Cinnamon (Ground Korintje),951,10
Cinnamon (Ground) Xtra Hi Oil (2x),614,31
Cinnamon (Ground) High Oil (1X),682,19

These continue for about 40-50 entries, they are not separated by a blank line though i had to add those so it would display correctly, each entry is on its own line with name separated with spaces, then price after a comma, then quantity after the second comma.....

Read Text File Into Array Ask User To Save File And Print Data

Jul 14, 2014

New to programming. Am supposed to create a program that reads a text file (of integers) and computes a series of computations on these integers. I don't have the code for the integers in my code yet, (i know how to do those), but am struggling getting the array to simply print in the print writer. I have the user select a text file, read the file with a scanner, and then save the computations done from my code into another file. specifically, the problem is as follows: Write a program that uses a file chooser dialog to select a file containing some integers. The file contains an integer N followed by N integers. The program then uses a file chooser dialog to let the user specify the name and location of an output file to write results to.The data written to the output file will be as follows

(1) The original list of N numbers from the input file,
(2) The original list of N numbers printed in reverse order of how they appear
in the input file.
(3) The sum and average of these numbers,
(4) The minimum of all the numbers,
(5) The maximum of all the numbers.

Use JTextarea To Display Text And Then Prompt Users To Type In Certain Words

Nov 9, 2014

So currently I am trying to use a JTextarea to display text and I then prompt users to type in certain words. I have a few problems that I have encountered. Firstly when I use setText and then if I say setText again after that it erases the previous text that was set. Ideally I want to set text once per line in my whenever a certain task is fulfilled. For example if the text says enter y/n, I want the program to go to the next line once I say y or n. Another problem of course is when I setEditable to true I can edit the whole textArea. I just want to be able to edit the line which I am currently at. Is there anything that I can use that mimics the ACM console program, or even the console down below in most IDE's where everything appears to be done line by line?

Also here is an example of what I am trying to do, along with comments:

Java Code:

console.setText("Math is good!");
console.setText("What is 2+2?: "); //using getText gets the whole line, I want
//everything checked after the colon. That is where the input will be
if(line==4){
console.setText("That is correct");
}
else {
console.setText("That is incorrect");
}
//previous text lines are overriden with new ones. I don't want that, nor do I want to be able to edit the
//whole JtextArea mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

A JtextArea is just not getting the job done.

How To Read Text File Into Array

Nov 17, 2014

I have to write a program for sorting an array of random numbers by the users choice. These random numbers are stored in a text file, which the user inputs, and is then stored into an array for sorting. I won't have a problem with the sorting algorithms, but I've never had to read a text file and store it into an array before

The text file has the numbers stored like so :
148
626
817
4
312
652
643
etc....

I gather that I'll probably have to user the Scanner for the user to input the text file name, but how do I store it to an array? So far I only have the bones of the program done, like so

import java.util.Scanner;
public class SortingAlgorithms {

Read Input File And Create Output With Anagram For Words In File

Sep 24, 2014

Well my code is supposed to ask for an input file and then (ex: input.txt), read the input file and create an output.txt file with the anagram for the words in the file. Also it should be displayed on the screen. However my code doesn't display the anagram on screen or the output file!

Heres is the code:

import java.io.*;
import java.lang.*;
import java.util.*;

/* This program will read a file given by the user, read the words within the file and determine anagrams of the given words. If the file that the user inputs is empty, then the program will output "The input file is empty."
* The program will read the file line by line, counting the total number of words read. If there are more than 50 words, "There are more than 50 words."
* will be printed, and the program will terminate. After each line is read, the words in the line will be separated,punctuation characters will be removed, and upper case characters will be switched to lower case.
* If any word is larger than 12 characters, that word will not be considered in the total amount of words in the file and it will not be sorted.
* After each word is read, the letters will be sorted and stored into an array containing each
* word's 'signature'. After all the words have been read, words will be printed to the output file on the same line based upon their signature.

How To Randomly Assign Specific Values In Array Or ArrayList

Apr 3, 2015

I'm trying to build a monopoly like game, and atm I'm trying to find way how to build the Community and Chance chest cards. so far, my logic is

1-create an ArrayList of cards with a given order

2-for a given number of times(for loop) generate 2 random numbers ,which will be the parameters for Collection.swap().

3-swap.

here's the code for the shuffler Button

shuffler.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
@Override
public void onClick(View v) {
for(int i=0;i<shuffeledMessages.length;i++){
int randoma=(int)(Math.random()*4);
int randomb=(int)(Math.random()*4);
Collections.swap(myMessages,randoma,randomb);
}
}
});

For now things seem to work pretty ok, but I'm wondering if this is a good and efficient way to shuffle a card chest especially in case of large number of cards. plus, I'm not sure what would be a good loop count for effective shuffling, in my case I used i<arraylist.size

How To Randomly Select A String In Array Based On Corresponding Number

Dec 21, 2014

I'm trying to generate a random word from the array that I have made including the words by making it corresponding with a randomly generated number. So for example, if the number generated is 0, then the word that the person has to guess would be "AUNT". How would I transfer the randomly generated number from one method into the array method to get the word the person has to guess?

Write a program called Word Guessing Game. Open the file FourLetterWords.txt and write the contents into an array of Strings (the file has 87 words in it). Then use a randomly generated number between 0 and 86 to select a word. The player will then try to guess the word selected by the game. The player is allowed 7 tries, if the player does not guess the word on the 7th try he/she losses. Display the letter of the word as they are guessed in the correct order, you will also display the incorrect letters. The game is over when:

- The player completes the word, or guesses the whole word correctly.
- The player does not guess the word in seven tries.
The player must also be allowed to terminate the game.
The game must have at least 5 classes:
- Main Class
- Class to return a random integer between 0 and 86.
- Class to return a populated array of 87, 4 letter words.
- Class to return a character that the player enters from the keyboard.
- Class to display both the correctly guessed letters and the incorrect letters.

My code (it is not complete, my attempt to do what I am trying to do is obviously not working.)

import java.util.Scanner;
public class WordGuessingGame {
public static void main(String[] args) {
final int NUMBER_OF_WORDS = 87;
