I can't catch the text message from a exception because ex.getMessage() is null.
Code is
try {
.......
} catch (Exception ex) {
System.out.println("Error "+ex.getMessage());
Logger.getLogger(Soap.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
statD.errMessage = ex.getMessage();
statD.succes = false;
return statD;
}
And the program writes at the console:
Error null
Also on the console screen I can see the following message:
Apr 10, 2014 3:00:38 PM SoapUtils.Soap setPostVarsSEVERE: nulljava.lang.NullPointerException at SoapUtils.Soap.setPostVars(Soap.java:830)
Line 830 of Soap.java is inside the try {}.
Why is the ex.getMesage() null?

I have to write a program that reads data from a file and prints only certain things. The file contains author names and book title names separated by "@" as the delimiter. We need to return only the books written by a certain author.
Here is an example of the text file (database.txt)
Doe@Jane@The West Wind
Smith@John@11 days and nights
Smith@Ken@Java Programming
Johnson@Jim@Web Development
Doe@Jane@The last day
Tolstoy@Leo@Data Structures
Wilson@Helen@Math Theory .....
This is the code I have so far:
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class Driver {
public static void main(String[] args) {
new Driver(args[0]);
} public Driver(String f) {
[Code] ....
I have everything written to record the names and titles of the authors and books, however I am unsure as to how to print ONLY the books written by Jane Doe. Could I possibly put it into a for loop with an if statement saying "if(firstName == "Jane" && lastName == "Doe")" then System.out.print the book title?

I am using JSTL library in my jsp. Previously, I was directly printing the text in JSP without using JSTL and it was printing fine.
My text is : Server Down, can't perform operation.
I was getting this error message from my backend code and was able to print this successfully. However, after using JSTL, doing like this:
pageContext.setAttribute("error", someObject.getError());
<c:out value="${error}" />
Here, c refers to <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
This is now printing the encoded form of the apostrophe char : Server Down, can't perform operation.

If you print (eg a JTable) from Java/Swing and choose "Adobe PDF" as the printer, you get an Acrobat file. But the PDF isn't searchable because the text has already been rendered by Java before Adobe PDF gets to see it. Is there a way to make printing use a more high-level interface to the printer driver so that the text is left intact?

I am using a TreeSet to tokenize a string. The output is sorted with numeric first followed by words
E.g. 13 26 45 and before etc.....................
Is there a tidy way to remove the numeric?
Last bit of my code is :-
// print the words separating them with a space
for(String word : words) {
System.out.print(word + " ");
}
} catch (FileNotFoundException fnfe) {
System.err.println("Cannot read the input file - pass a valid file name");

I am trying to sort a JTable on an all numeric (integer) column. From what I read, if the sorter knows the type is integer it should sort correctly. This is my code:
public class ActorTableModel extends DefaultTableModel {
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1005352603826663105L;
public ActorTableModel (Object data[][],Object columnNames[]) {
super(data,columnNames);
}
public Class<?> getColumnClass (int column) {
if (column==0) {
return(Integer.class);
}
return(String.class);
}
}
The result is when I sort on that column (0), it sorts alphabetically not numerically.

I am trying to write out a program that takes numerical input from the user and converts it to a date using the English month name. I am experimenting with the method of a "switch" statement without using the "break" clause. However, I seem to be missing something, as Eclipse is telling me I have a syntax error with my block. My curly braces seem properly placed. Also, I made sure to follow guidelines to make my code fit on the screen and remain easy to read.
import acm.program.*;
public class MethodsThatReturnNonNumericValues extends ConsoleProgram {
public void run() {
int month=readInt("Enter month number");
int day=readInt("Enter day");
int year=readInt("Enter year");

At first I wanted to just use an array and set each day a value, however I was told that it has to be stored as a string.
Design and implement the class Day that implements the day of the week in a program. The class Day should store the day, such as Sun for Sunday. The program should be able to perform the following operations on an object of type Day:
A. Set the day.
B. Print the day.
C. Return the day.
D. Return the next day.
E. Return the previous day.
F. Calculate and return the day by adding certain days to the current day. For example, if the current day is Monday and we add four days, the day to be returned is Friday. Similarly, if today is Tuesday and we add 13 days, the day to be returned is Monday.
G. Add the appropriate constructors.
H. Write the definitions of the methods to implement the operations for the class Day, as defined in A through G.
I. Write a program to test various operations on the class Day.
import java.util.*;
public class Day {
static Scanner readinput = new Scanner(System.in);
String day;
public Day(String day) {
[Code] ....
So right now if I run my code it allows me to type in a day, then it gives me the next and previous day, the last part is to add X days to it. Ideally I would like to be able to take the day entered, depending on the day set a numeric value, then add prompt for number of days you want to add. The program should then use modal (%7 ) to add value to the value that was given based on the day, and then translate it back into a String value (the day).

What can I do? Also, am I finding the average of the array correctly?

In the test program, you will need to convert the Strings for quantity and price to numeric types. To do this, you could use the Integer.parseInt() method and the Double.parseDouble() methods. I'm not sure what he means by that. I attempted it in my program but I get these errors
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Error: Unresolved compilation problems:

I have a string value returned from a background tool that will range from 0 to possibly terabytes as a full number. I want to format that number to use commas and to reduce the character count using an appropriate size modifier (KiB, MiB, GiB, etc). I've tried converting the string number to a Double value using Double.parseDouble() and then performing the math based on the size of the value with this code:
Double dblConversionSize;
String stCinvertedSize;
dblConversionSize = Double.parseDouble(theValue);
if (dblConversionSize > (1024 * 1024 * 1024))
stConvertedSize = String.format("%,.000d", dblConversionSize / 1024 / 1024 / 1024) + " TiB";
...
I've also tried using
String.valueOf(dblConversionSize / 1024 / 1024 / 1024) + " TiB";
However, the formatting is failing and I'm either getting a format exception or the result is displayed as a number with no decimal component.

I am checking how to do following task.
01. pickup the selected text file and read the line by line and output the text in to visual text pane.
what i did:.
01. I wrote code that read the text file and output in to jave console/ also some of the interface.
the code read txt file:
Java Code:
String fileName = "C:/Users/lakshan/Desktop/lawyer.txt";
File textFile = new File(fileName);
Scanner in = new Scanner (textFile);
while(in.hasNextLine()){
[code]....
so it will read any text file dynamically and output to the text pane in interface. I think scanner code must be execute after the select the file from the browser and set the scanned result in to variable. then later out put the var as string in some jswing component?

public class InstantMessageFrame extends JFrame
{
private JList friends;
private JTextField message;
private JButton send;
[code]...
1. Open the source code file of your InstantMessageFrame class from Lab 12.2.
2. Add the following three fields to the InstantMessageFrame class: a JTextField named message, a JList named friends, and a JButton named send.
3. Add a method to your InstantMessageFrame class named getMessagePanel()that returns a JPanel and has no parameters. (This method will create a JPanel that will appear in the south border of your JFrame. It will contain a text field in which a message can be entered and a button that sends an instant message to all the friends in the list.)
4. Within getMessagePanel(), instantiate a new JPanel and give it BorderLayout.Assign a message equal to a new JTextField by using the no-argument constructor of JTextField. Assign send to a new JButton,passing in "Send" to the constructor. (This will be the label on the button.)
5. Within getMessagePanel(), add the message text field to the center of the JPanel and add the send button to the east border of the JPanel. The panel is now ready, so return the JPanel reference.
6. Add a method to your InstantMessageFrame class named get-FriendsPane() that returns a JScrollPane and has no parameters.(This method will create a scrollable list that will contain the names of others that you can chat with.)
7. Within getFriendsPane(), assign friends to a new JList by using theno-argument constructor of JList.
8. Within getFriendsPane(), instantiate a new JScrollPane using the following statement: JScrollPane pane = new JScrollPane(friends);
9. The scroll pane is ready, so return the reference pane at the end of getFriendsPane().
10. Within the constructor of InstantMessageFrame, invoke getMessagePanel(),placing the returned panel in the south border of the content pane of InstantMessageFrame.An Introduction to GUI Programming 399
11. Within the constructor of InstantMessageFrame, invoke get-FriendsPane(), placing the returned scroll pane in the center of the content pane of InstantMessageFrame.
12. Save, compile, and run the InstantMessageFrame class.Your InstantMessageFrame now has three visible components: a JList,a JTextField, and a JButton.

if i send messages as in the code below, is there a way to read only one message, if the client doesn't know how long it is (or if he only knows the maximum length)?in the documentation it says, that the method read(byte[]) reads until no data ist available or end of file is decteted. What does the latter mean? Can i extend the array that i sent by a byte that signals the end? Here is my Code:
Server
public class Server implements Runnable{
ServerSocket server;
HashMap<Short,Socket> clients;
public Server(){
clients = new HashMap<>();
[code]....
Both are startet in seperate threads. At the moment the first output of the client is "12 bytes read", and then continously "-1 bytes read"(because the server closes).
