Program That Find Minimum Value In Array Of Integers

Feb 3, 2014

I'm required to create a program that finds the minimum value in an Array of integers.

Here is my approach :

public class Person {
public static void main(String [ ] args){
int theArray[]=new int [10];
int result = 0;
for (int i:theArray){
if (i < Integer.MAX_VALUE)

[Code]...

I can't really progress from this position. I keep getting told to change the return type to int on main method, then when i do it says change it to void..

How To Find Out Minimum JRE Requirement For Java Program

Jan 26, 2014

I finished a game in Java and sent it to a friend. Launching the program in my computer worked just fine.

But he got this error : "Could not find the main classs: Main. program will exit"

My JRE version is the most updated one. His JRE was version 1.6. He updated his JRE, and the problem was solved.

This is a bit worrying for me, because as far as I know, 1.6 isn't a very old version of the JRE. It's not the most recent one, but not that old.

This is worrying because I'm planning on sending my game to a lot of friends, and trying to distribute it on the internet.

A lot of people don't have the most updated JRE. And they are mostly non-programmers, so I can't expect them to update to the newest version of Java upon downloading my game. They might not know what Java is, even though they got it on their computer, and upon receiving an error, they'll just give up on the game.

If my game wouldn't work with a significantly old JRE, that would be reasonable. It's part of the nature of working with Java. But the fact that a relatively updated JRE, 1.6, doesn't work with my game, is worrying.

*(Please note: My game isn't implementing anything "special". Swing and KeyBindings are the 'newest' additions to Java that I can think of inside my game)*.

In short, I'd like to know that my game works on most of the computers it tries to run on. Knowing that it doesn't work on a relatively new JRE, is worrying.

So I have two questions:

1. Is it normal, for a Java program, to have such "high" demands for the JRE version? Do a lot of Java games demand at least version 1.6 of the JRE? Is this common?

2. How can I find out the minimum JRE version requirement for my program? Is there a methodical way to do this, or do I just have to go through all the libraries I use in my game and figure out what's the JRE release version for each one?

Java - Find Number In Given Array Of Integers

May 2, 2014

I wrote this simple piece of code to find the number in the given array of Integers. The program works fine although it shows a couple of errors when i modify it a little bit.

public class DemoLabel{
public static void main(String [] args){
int[][] arrofInts={
{32,45,67,87},
{23,44,55,66},
{12,47,87,56},
{23,44,12,78}

[Code] .....

In the disp() method,Suppose i only want to pass two arguments i.e disp(i,j) given that searchFor variable is visible in the entire class but when i use disp(i,j) i get the following error

DemoLabel.java:38: error: cannot find symbol System.out.println("The number "+searchFor+" is at the location"+i+" , "+j);
^
symbol: variable searchFor
location: class DemoLabel

So i decided to declare the

int searchFor
as
public int searchFor

But the compiler threw another error saying that it was a Illegal start of expression

Also,when i add a SOP line after the label search: it shows the error

DemoLabel.java:25: error: undefined label: search
continue search;
^

Although i got the program to work it would be useful if i could understand why it doesn't work with the modifications.

Print Maximum And Minimum Values Of Integers From User Input

Apr 27, 2015

So I'm learning java from a website and I was tasked with creating a simple program which allows the user to enter a series of integers, then finally when they decide to input a non-integer the program will print the maximum and minimum values of the integers they entered. So for example if they entered 5, 4, 3 and 2 then enter a non-integer the program would output 5 (maximum value), then 2 on a new line (minimum value).

Here is my code:

import java.util.Scanner;
public class MaxMinPrinter {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);
int max = Integer.MIN_VALUE;
int min = Integer.MAX_VALUE;

[Code] ....

And this is what the output looks like:

Actual output
-------------------------------------------
Enter an integer: 5
- 10
-
- Enter an integer: -4
- 8
- -6
-
- Enter an integer: 11
- -1
-
- Enter an integer: q
- -1
- -6

When it's supposed to look like this:

Expected output
-------------------------------------------
Enter an integer: 5
Enter an integer: 10
Enter an integer: -4
Enter an integer: 8
Enter an integer: -6
Enter an integer: 11
Enter an integer: -1
Enter an integer: q
11
-6

I'm almost finished with my assignment, I'm just having one small issue. The goal of this assignment is to have a user input as many values they want(up to 10) into a list. I need to store those in an array then figure out the sum of the numbers, the average, the Largest value, and the smallest value. I get everything to print out correct so far except for the Smallest number, it is returning a 0 every time. Here is my code:

public class SimpleList{
Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);

Find Both Largest And Smallest Of Several Integers

Apr 9, 2015

Write a program that finds both the largest and smallest of several integers. T. For example, a program that determines the winner and loser of a sales contest would input the number of units sold by each salesperson. The salesperson who sells the most units wins the contest; the salesperson who sells the least units loses the contest. Write a pseudocode program, then a Java program that inputs a series of 10 integers and determines and prints the largest integer and the smallest integer. Your program should use at least the following four variables: counter, number , largest and smallest. After i run the code i just get the largest input without the smallest .

This is my code :

import java.util.Scanner; // program uses scanner
// main Class begins
public class Largest12
{
public static void main(String[] args) //main method begins
{
//Initial variables
int counter = 0; // initiate counter
int number=0 ;

Loop / Boolean - Find Greatest Common Divisor Of Two Integers

Sep 25, 2014

In attempting to find the greatest common divisor (gcd) of two integers, n1 and n2, whereas k is a possible gcd and gcd is initialized to 1, the following code has been entered:

for (int k = 2; k <= n1 && k <= n2; k++) {
if ( n1 % 2 == 0 && n2 % 2 == 0)
gcd= k;
}

When asked to change the previous line of code to this:

for (int k = 2; k <= n1 / 2 && k < n2 / 2; k++){

the questions states this revision is wrong and to find the reason.....well, I've changed it, entered "3" (per the answer key) for n1 and n2....

now I can see logically where k (2 in this example) is not <= n1/2, which is 3/2 or 1, since we're dealing w/integers, yet when I compile and run, my answer is indeed, gcd = 1. However, since this is a Boolean expression where && is being used, since the first portion evaluates to "false", the 2nd portion isn't executed and thus my result of 1?...... loops are throwing me for one, for sure....

Convert Array Of Integers To Array Of Characters And Then Print It Out

Feb 13, 2014

I have double checked this code over and over and I just can't find the problem.

What I'm trying to do is take a file and input it into an 2D array.

Ultimately, I should convert the array of integers to an array of characters, then print it out. The file contains a set of ASCII values.

After printing it out, I should then create methods to manipulate the image produced.

Using 2D arrays is a requirement for this exercise.

I think that somehow I'm overcomplicating this and the solution is a lot more simple than I think, but I can't think of what to change.

The error I am getting is:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 40

import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;
public class main {

Connect 4 - Program Registers If See Four Integers Of Same Value

Apr 21, 2015

For the latest assignment, my instructor has asked us to create a program where we create lines of at least for integers and if the program registers there being four of the same integer horizontally, vertically, or diagonally it returns true. For example:

1 1 1 1 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
4 3 6 2 2 1 4 5 1 5 6 7
8 2 0 3 3 2 1 6 1 3 5 7
4 7 9 3 5 7 4 1 1 8 9 0

If the program doesn't see four integers of the same value anywhere, it is supposed to return false. I've got it so it returns true for the lines above, 6x6 lines of integers and lines where only four out of six+ integers are equal. However, I cannot get my code to return false if there are only three matching integers in a row/column/diagonal nor can I get the program to print out either true or false for lines that do not start at the top left corner. (i.e 2 3 1 1 1 1) For the former I get this error message:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 4
at ConnectFour.is4Consecutive(ConnectFour.java:41)
at ConnectFour.main(ConnectFour.java:32)

For the latter:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 6
at ConnectFour.is4Consecutive(ConnectFour.java:43)
at ConnectFour.main(ConnectFour.java:34)

The answer to fixing my code is probably something small or something that will make me wonder why I hadn't thought of it myself... Here is my code:

import java.util.Scanner;
public class ConnectFour {
private static Scanner sc;
public static void main(String[] args)
{
sc = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.print("Enter the height: ");
int h = sc.nextInt();
System.out.print("Enter the width: ");

[Code] .....

1 1 1 1
4 3 6 2
8 2 0 3
4 7 9 3

1 2 3 4
2 1 4 5
3 2 1 6
5 7 4 1

1 2 3 4
1 5 6 7
1 3 5 7
1 8 9 0

Write A Java Program That Reads 5 Integers

Oct 9, 2014

Project is due before midnight eastern time (3 more hours). I have been working on this all day, we have not learned arrays or anything and just started 'for' loops. I don't really know how to implement that system yet. However, he wants us to check all the possible handwritten math ways of doing this. I have tried but I cannot return my numbers beside the card.my program only prints the type and I still have more cases to add as well..

QUESTION: Write a Java program that reads 5 integers, each of which is in the range of 1 and 13 representing a simplified poker card with no suit. Your program should then print the ranking of the hand with card number(s) beside the ranking. The rankings to determine are Four of a Kind(4 of the 5 cards of the same rank), Full House(3 of the 5 cards of the same rank, and 2 cards of another rank), Straight(5 cards of sequential rank), Three of a Kind(only 3 cards of the same rank), Two Pair(2 cards of the same rank, 2 cards of another rank, and no card of either rank), One Pair(only 2 of 5 cards are of the same rank), and High Card(no two cards of the same rank). Some sample runs are:

input: 2, 3, 2, 2, 2; output: Four of a Kind(2)
input: 2, 3, 2, 3, 2; output: Full House(2, 3)

Sorting Array Of Random Integers

Dec 8, 2014

What the fastest way to sort an array of random integers. My instructor told me to look into an algorithm that uses 2n, but that is all he gave me. I am unable to find anything of the sort (pun intended there) on google, in my text, in my other java books or on here. The only thing that I have come up with are things like mergesort with the exception that the indicies of the Array have to be even. The program that I'm writing takes user input for a minimum to maximum range, the amount of numbers to fill the array in that range, and verbose.

I've tried bubbleSort but it takes forever to sort under the conditions below. I have seen a sorting algorithm that uses n (log n) but didn't really understand how that one worked.

Using the 2n algorithm, I should be able to test the range from 1 - 1000 and have it populate an array of of 1,000,000 random integers. It should be able to complete in a matter of miliseconds.
