Sorting Array Of Objects Based On One Of Class String Variables

Apr 8, 2014

I have a school assignment that involves me sorting an array of objects based on one of the class String variables. I am using as the title says a simple selection sort method. The problem I'm having is that when I run the program in debug mode, it never seems to enter the if statement in the inner loop. I would like to say I've tried a number of things to figure it out, but honestly I'm just stumped as to why it's not working.

Here is the code:

public static void sortTransactions(Transaction[] oTransaction){// This is the sorting method, obviously it's not done so it currently just prints to screen.
System.out.println("Successful call to sortTransaction()

");
String min = "";
int curInd = 0;
Transaction[] temp = new Transaction[1];

[Code] ....

The output when I check to see if the array is sorted verifies that the array never does get sorted.

Sorting Array Of Objects With Strings?

Feb 14, 2015

An array has objects with String firstName, String lastName, int ID, char examType('M' or 'F'), and int score. Every object has both Midterm('M') and Final('F'). The array has to be sorted by the first Midterm- 'M' and immediately followed by the Final ('F') of the same person (object). Im having troubles with coming up with a proper algorithm with gettin the Final- 'F' after Midterm for the same person.

Java Code: public static Exam[] collateExams(Exam[] exams) {
Exam [] r = new Exam[10];
r = exams;
int[] position = new int[10];
int index = 0;
for(int i = 0; i < exams.length; i++)

Servlets :: Thread Safety Should Not Use Any Variables Or Objects At Instance / Class Level

Jun 3, 2014

As web server has multiple threads to serve client requests in Thread Pool & to ensure Thread Safety we should not use any variables or Objects at Instance/Class level.But in case of Session Variable which one is the Best Practice as the Session object is used by all the requests to have the same Session ID.

My Code :

private static Logger log = Logger.getLogger(ClientRegistrationServlet.class);
private HttpSession session; /* This is used at Instance Level*/

How To Randomly Select A String In Array Based On Corresponding Number

Dec 21, 2014

I'm trying to generate a random word from the array that I have made including the words by making it corresponding with a randomly generated number. So for example, if the number generated is 0, then the word that the person has to guess would be "AUNT". How would I transfer the randomly generated number from one method into the array method to get the word the person has to guess?

Write a program called Word Guessing Game. Open the file FourLetterWords.txt and write the contents into an array of Strings (the file has 87 words in it). Then use a randomly generated number between 0 and 86 to select a word. The player will then try to guess the word selected by the game. The player is allowed 7 tries, if the player does not guess the word on the 7th try he/she losses. Display the letter of the word as they are guessed in the correct order, you will also display the incorrect letters. The game is over when:

- The player completes the word, or guesses the whole word correctly.
- The player does not guess the word in seven tries.
The player must also be allowed to terminate the game.
The game must have at least 5 classes:
- Main Class
- Class to return a random integer between 0 and 86.
- Class to return a populated array of 87, 4 letter words.
- Class to return a character that the player enters from the keyboard.
- Class to display both the correctly guessed letters and the incorrect letters.

My code (it is not complete, my attempt to do what I am trying to do is obviously not working.)

import java.util.Scanner;
public class WordGuessingGame {
public static void main(String[] args) {
final int NUMBER_OF_WORDS = 87;
RandomWordGenerator.random(NUMBER_OF_WORDS);

Accessing Variables From Array Instance Of Class?

Jan 26, 2015

I am having some problem accessing variables from an array instance of a class. Heres what i have done;

In the main class:

Example obj[]= new Example[4];

In the main class constructor:

obj[0] = new Example(0);
obj[1] = new Example(1);
obj[2] = new Example(2);
obj[3] = new Example(3);

In the main update() method:

if(condition)
//update

In the Example class constructor:

private boolean change = false;

In the Example class update() method:

if(x >20)
change= true;

Now, i want to access the variable change from the main class, how do i do it? The 'condition' in the if statement is the condition of wether the change variable ia true or false. How do i access it?

Sorting Arrays - Order From Greatest To Smallest Based On Frequency

Feb 12, 2014

These are all arraylists and not arrays

I have currently two arrays.

Java Code:

String[] chunks = {"a","b","c"};
int[] freq = {2,4,3}; mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

I am looking for a way to order these from greatest to smallest based on frequency.

The resulting arrays should be:

Java Code:

chunks = {"b","c","a"};
freq = {4,3,2}; mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

Because b is most frequent, and a is least frequent.

One way I can think of doing this is a two dimensional String array

Java Code: String[][] fullHold = {{"b","c","a"},{"4","3","2"}}; mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

Then sort based on the character values of the second row.

How can I sort a two dimensional array based on a single row (where it will rearrange the other rows in accordance).

Pass Objects From 3 Different Methods At Random To Different Class And Store In Array?

Jun 8, 2014

in my progrm there are three diff array of objects...namely garments..gadgets and home app...now one who buys from each of these sections will have to make a bill at last...when he choses to make the bill he will be shown the list of products he bought and their details (like price...brand...etc)...so i thought that while he orders each product(which is done in a previous method called purchase()...)....(each product is stored as an object in there diif arrays namely garments...gadgets ...appliances)....each of those object will be copied in a new array in a diif class...then that array print will give me the desired result...

is this approach correct...?and if its correct then how can i pull out a specific obj frm a stored array of object and then save it in a new array....?

Sorting Objects By A Number Of Fields

Mar 17, 2014

I am trying to find a concise way to write the sort methods for my class. I am supposed to make a program that can sort objects by a number of fields: year, rank, artist and title.

I used an idea from this thread : java - Sorting a collection of objects - Stack Overflow

And I am trying to use the custom comparator for my sort methods. However for some reason, the sortingBy variable fails to recognize any of the enum types.

Whenever I try to set the sortingBy variable equal to one of them, for example:

Java Code:

private Order sortingBy = Year; mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

I get a "Year cannot be resolved to a variable" error.

What I want to be able to do is make it so every time a specific method is called, say, for example sortTitle(), sortingBy will change to Title, then the SongComparator will sort using the case Title.

Is it possible to do this? I can't figure out how to modify SongComparator's object variables that way.

Java Code:

import java.util.Comparator;
public class SongComparator implements Comparator<Song> {
public enum Order {Year, Rank, Artist, Title}
public Order sortingBy;

Mar 18, 2014

I have to create a method with the following header :

public static <E extends Comparable<E> > void sort ( ArrayList<E> list , int left, int right)

i also had to create a swap cells method and position of max integer method. and also had to read the preserved data file in with a scanner. I implemented the comparable interface I am having difficulty sorting my list by the area. It has to be in descending order.

Geometric Object class: since it has comparator also am interested if i need to change this?

How Do Memory Allocate Space For Objects Or Variables

Sep 1, 2014

I'm new to programming and I would just like to know what happens inside the memory once you run a java application. How do the memory allocate space for your objects or variables? Where does it start?does it start in memory location 1 first when I create my first variable or object? What is the use of variables and how is it used by the memory?Also if I create a variable named String s1 then I created another variable again named s1= "myString" Did I create a new object or I just edited the value of the s1 variable??

And if I create a variable int num1 = 10 then I created another variable int num1 = 12 did I create another one or I just edited the num1 variable?? Also how much memory would an object have? Does it depend on how many primitives objects like arrays or strings it have?Also I want to develop 3D games also, in the future is Java going to be great as I know machines in the future will have massive amounts of RAM and the JVM will be better...

Declaring Methods For A Class In Its Own Class Whilst Objects Of Class Declared Elsewhere?

Mar 5, 2015

How do you declare methods for a class within the class whilst objects of the class are declared else where?

Say for instance, I have a main class Wall, and another class called Clock, and because they are both GUI based, I want to put a Clock on the Wall, so I have declared an instance object of Clock in the Wall class (Wall extends JFrame, and Clock extends JPanel).

I now want to have methods such as setClock, resetClock in the Clock class, but im having trouble in being able to refer to the Clock object thats been declared in the Wall class.

Is this possible? Or am I trying to do something thats not possible? Or maybe I've missed something really obvious?

Null Detected In String Array Not Saved By Class Constructor

Mar 12, 2014

I've a vertical-bar-delimited file where most elements contain text, some contain whitespace, and some are empty. Examples:

62RG|fe|Pencil Financial Group, LLC||doug@pencil.com|||85637889|Cross, Ben|bcross@godaddy.net|Bernard|Cross|Ben||315 One Tree Hill Terrace|Lafayette|LA

62RG|fe|Pencil Financial Group, LLC||tracy@pencil.com|||13658734|Dustin Cardwright|dcart@motorola.com|Dustin|Cartwright|||| |LA

which I parse and store with

String str_arry = innline.split( "|", 17);
lisst.add( new Contact( str_arry));

and my Contact class has the constructor

public Contact( String[] str_arry) {
for( int ii = 0 ; ii < str_arry.length ; ii++ ) {
if( str_arry[ii].matches("^s+$")) {
str_arry[ii] = null;
System.out.println("hit a null");

[Code]...

I expect the for-loop in the constructor to find any elements containing whitespace characters and set them to null for subsequent assignment.And when the code runs I do see some hit-statements pop up, so the detecting part is working.

But when I then process the list and access a Contact object and test fields for nulls I don't find any ie

if( aContactObj.getfFCity() == null) System.out.println("city is null");

never prints when it should.

What's the trick? Or is my approach wrong and if so what should it be?

Array Based Implementation Of A Stack - Generic Array Creation

Oct 10, 2014

So I have this stack. I'm writing out all the operations and what not but I'm having trouble bypassing this "generic array creation" problem. I'm meant to be creating an array based implementation of a stack and from my research from google and my various attempts at things, I have not found a solution that works.

In addition; I have all the operations written that I need except for one final one. And that is clear(). clear() is meant to empty the array, essentially it is a popAll() method. Then all I need to do is set up so I can print out the arrays and I should be able to handle everything else.

StackInterface:

/**
An interface for the ADT stack.
*/
public interface StackInterface<T>
{
/** Adds a new entry to the top of this stack.
@param newEntry an object to be added to the stack */
public void push(T newEntry);

/** Removes and returns this stackÕs top entry.
@return either the object at the top of the stack or, if the stack is empty before the operation, null
*/
public T pop();

Sorting Dates - Saving Result In Class

May 18, 2014

So, I have two classes (bubble sort and insert sort) which are sorting dates. I need to save their comparings and reallocation of elements.

And I don't know how to do it. The point is if I want save that dates(comparings and reallocation) to Result class i need to create new instances of class in each sorting classes so i can't later do something with that, because I have null in Main class.

To avoid that problem i have tried to make Result class as singleton.. I mean: "public static final Results INSTANCE = new Results();" and then in classes "static Results result = Results.INSTANCE" without constructor and to save for example comparings i had method:

Java Code:

int SetComparings(){
return comparings++;
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

But it do not work too, because it overwrites old dates. Is there anyway to do not create instance of class? I don't want to copy whole code because it is too long and cant be unreadable, but i will put you structure of my program:

Java Code:

class BubbleSort{}
class InsertSort{}
class Results{}
class Sorting{} // class with switch to choose which way of sorting use
public class Main{} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
