Split Text File Lines Into Pieces And Put Them In Different Array Lists?
Mar 14, 2015
For example, if I had a text file with one line such as "first, second, third", would there be a way to make it so I could make "first" go to the first array list, "second" to the second, and "third" to the third?
I haven't posted any of my code so far as it wouldn't be right to be handed the finished code on a platter and I should put the work into it, but I'd just need a loop to make it go through the rest of the lines in the text file to add all the first, second and third parts of each line, right?
(I already know how to input data from a file, but not how to split up a line into bits to put into different array lists).

I have a program that reads lines of text, but some of the lines of text aren't applicable and break the program. I'd like to put a letter in front of the lines in the .txt file I want to use, such as a #.
I need to make an if loop that'll check for the first letter on the line being #, and use the line in the program if true and skip if false. I'm guessing a boolean variable would be useful here to be true or false depending on the presence of #, but I don't know how to only read the first letter of each line, how can I do this?

I am trying to read a text file into Java and split the text into tokens. Eventually I want to be able to count the number of instances of a specific word. However, at this point, when I run the file, all I get is the location of the file rather than the text in the file.
import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;
public class textTest3 {
/**

* @param args
* @throws IOException

But I want to change like very other line in the file. Can't seem to understand how this could be done. Is there away to access specific lines from the file and edit them? So far, i have this:

I am writing to a file coordinates of texts using PathIterator (Java Platform SE 7 ) saved as SVG format i defined the Font attributes using AttributedString (Java Platform SE 7 ) and TextLayout (Java Platform SE 8 ). It is saving to the file and working properly, but it is just writing as a single line of text where is my target is multiple lines of text, i began using LineBreakMeasurer (Java Platform SE 7 ) Class, but some text is removed plus i got single line of text only, where i face the problem that , How to determine the width to get multiple lines of text ? i tried to figure out from this exampleDrawing Multiple Lines of Text (The Java - Tutorials > 2D Graphics > Working with Text APIs) where is drawing multiple lines of text but i am using getBounds().getWidth() of TextLayout object the code i tried

How i can get the data from a file, for a key that have multiple values without using split method and i want to store that data in an array
file name:"new.txt"[contains below data]
Name=google.com, yahoo.com,facebook.com
Attachment=abc1,abc2,abc3
I am successfully able to do this using following code
Properties props = new Properties();
String configFilePath = (Cjava_confignew.txt);
props.load(new FileReader(configFilePath));
String TestName = props.getProperty(Name);
String test[] = TestName.split(,);
Now i just want to store the values for key "Name" in array without using TestName.split(,); but i am not able to do this.
I have also used .yml file to avoid this but did not succeed, some way to do this
file name test.yml
Name
-google.com
-yahoo.com
-facebook.com
Attachment
-abc1
-abc2
-abc3
i want to store multiple values for single key(Name) within the array

I am working on a project that requires me to build a database with random access file, representing products, the base product contains a name (about 30 characters), a price (double), and a quantity (integer). I have worked on this project for probably 15+ hours and have tried so many things and feel like I've barley made any progress...
The part i am really struggling with is taking the data from the text file and creating an object array with it using the product class. Once ive accomplished that, i have to use that data to create a random access file with the data.
Here is the base Product class that must be used to create the objects for the array.
public class Product
{
public String pName;
public String stringName;
public double price;
public int quanity;
[Code] .....
And then here is the data from the text file that i must extract to use to create product objects.
Dill Seed,938,34
Mustard Seed,100,64
Coriander Powder,924,18
Turmeric,836,80
Cinnamon (Ground Korintje),951,10
Cinnamon (Ground) Xtra Hi Oil (2x),614,31
Cinnamon (Ground) High Oil (1X),682,19
These continue for about 40-50 entries, they are not separated by a blank line though i had to add those so it would display correctly, each entry is on its own line with name separated with spaces, then price after a comma, then quantity after the second comma.....

New to programming. Am supposed to create a program that reads a text file (of integers) and computes a series of computations on these integers. I don't have the code for the integers in my code yet, (i know how to do those), but am struggling getting the array to simply print in the print writer. I have the user select a text file, read the file with a scanner, and then save the computations done from my code into another file. specifically, the problem is as follows: Write a program that uses a file chooser dialog to select a file containing some integers. The file contains an integer N followed by N integers. The program then uses a file chooser dialog to let the user specify the name and location of an output file to write results to.The data written to the output file will be as follows
(1) The original list of N numbers from the input file,
(2) The original list of N numbers printed in reverse order of how they appear
in the input file.
(3) The sum and average of these numbers,
(4) The minimum of all the numbers,
(5) The maximum of all the numbers.

import java.io.PrintWriter;

I have to read a text looking for value related to certain variable. The variable are always DE plus identifier from 1 to 99 or DE plus identifier from 1 to 99 and SF plus identifier from 1 to 99. The value can be alphanumeric. How can I get these values? As a start point, I try to use split("DE") but I can get something that is wrong if there is "DE" inside the text that doesn't me interest. I look for scanner but it doesn't work. I guess that there is some way, maybe using regex but I am completely lost ( I have never used regedix before and I am in rush to fix this).
Basically, the text is similar to the below where DE means data element and sf sub field. Some data elements have sub fields while others don't. I guess that there is a way to split with something like DE+anyNumberFrom1To99 = theValueAimed in some array and DE+anyNumberFrom1To99+,+SF+anyNumberFrom1To99 = theValueAimed in other array.
DE 2, SF 1 = 00 SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 22, SF 1 = 0 SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 22, SF 4 = 1 SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 22, SF 5 = 0 SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 22, SF 6 = 11 SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 22, SF 7 = 90x SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 22, SF 7 = 12ab SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME
DE 99 = 1234 SOME TEXT THAT DOESN'T INTEREST ME

I am trying to split the contents of the text file and assign the value on the left of the separator to a variable and the value on the right of the | separator to another variable. Thus I tried out a sample code to print all the values in the split [] first, and ended up with problems. This is the content of the text file:
Crazed Boy|20
Hello|5
MSB|6.5
public class Main {
public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
BufferedReader infile = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("test1.txt"));
for (int i =0; i < 3 ;i++) {
String s = infile.readLine();
String[] ss = s.split("|");
[code]....
I keep getting IOException in my sample code, why is this so ? I assumed the split() method is supposed to output for the 1st iteration:
ss[0] = Crazed Boy
ss[1] = 20

I'm currently learning Java and have been set an assignment that requires me to do the following:
Write an application that reads in a line length followed by individual lines containing text. No input line will be longer than the read in line length. In the text lines each word will be separated by a single space. The lines of text to be reformatted and then output so that the output lines of text have straight left and right margins. The last printing character in each line will be at character position (line length). In the text output the character '.' is to be used to represent the space character.

I'm trying to take this task on, but I'm unsure as to what exactly I'm supposed to do with part of it. For one of the methods I need to "work out how many extra spaces will need to be added to make the line width characters long.", how would I go about doing this?

public class MyArrayList<E>

private E[] data_store = (E[])new Object[2];
private int sizeofa = 0;
private void resize()// makes the array list bigger if need {
E[] bigspacemaker = (E[])new Object[data_store.length * 2];

I have to write a program for sorting an array of random numbers by the users choice. These random numbers are stored in a text file, which the user inputs, and is then stored into an array for sorting. I won't have a problem with the sorting algorithms, but I've never had to read a text file and store it into an array before
The text file has the numbers stored like so :
148
626
817
4
312
652
643
etc....
I gather that I'll probably have to user the Scanner for the user to input the text file name, but how do I store it to an array? So far I only have the bones of the program done, like so
import java.util.Scanner;
public class SortingAlgorithms {
public static void main(String[] args) {

I need comparing two array lists. For this program i am comparing 2 array lists. The list is integers entered by the user the second is random generated numbers. So far in my program i am able to compare the 2 arrays together and output if they are equal or not however i need the program to output even if atleast one if the integers match,
EXAMPLE list one: 1, 2 ,3 ,4, 5. LIST TWO: 1, 3, 3, 3, 3.
Since the first number matches i want it to out put there is one match, so on and so forth with if there are 3 or 4 matching integers. here is my code so far.

//int[] TestArrayTwo = { 1, 2, 3, 3, 5 };

I was wondering if it's possible to do this: I want to build a java program that reads a java array from a text file.
Then I want to read it, and output it in a different format.
The reading and out is easy - as text.
But how can I incorporate the read text in to a java valid array in my program, which I can use?
Is this even possible?
