Unable To Get Value Out Of Double - It Only Extends To One Decimal Place

Oct 3, 2014

I'm not sure why, but whenever I try to get a value out of a double, it only extends to one decimal place. For instance, (825 / 805) would become 1.0000 (after being run through a DecimalFormat object) instead of 1.0248 like I need it to be (and should be if what I know about primitive variable types is right). Why is the double variable type not giving me the precision I want and, more importantly, how do I fix this?

Java Program - Distance Traveled (Formatting And Decimal Place)

Apr 10, 2014

I'm having trouble formatting my output and issues with the decimal places. Here's my code:

import java.util.Scanner;
import java.text.DecimalFormat; // Imports DecimalFormat class for one way to round
 public class lab3 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String heading1 = "Hour", heading2 = "Distance Traveled";
int timeElapsed, hour, speed;

[Code] ....

And here's my output (Click on the image since it's pretty small):

javaIssues.png

Issue:
1) The Hours 2 and 3 aren't aligned to 1.
2) The 80 and 120 in Distance Traveled have 6 decimal places when it should not have decimals.

How To Write JAVA Program That Read Whole Number And Tell Decimal Place

Oct 10, 2014

Ex. If I type 5943, the program will say
mill = 5
hun = 9
ten = 4
uni = 3

get the picture I had to translate the decimal value names from a different language.

This is what I have tried...,

Java Code:

import java.util.Scanner;//Permite el uso de leer el teclado del usuario
public class DeterminarValorDecimal//Nombra el documento
{
public static void main(String [] args)//Podemos ver la clase
{

[Code].....

But what this does is I have to enter the single digits one by one. I want to be able to type the whole number. Is there a method that reads the length of the whole number and lets me classify each digit so I can do what I want to do?

Decimal Format Errors - String Cannot Be Converted To Double

Double RelativeFrequency Value Which Does Calculation / End Result Is Number With Lots Of Decimal Numbers

Nov 24, 2014

for (int i = 0; i < letters.length; i++) {
double relativeFreq = (onesAverage()/letters[i]);
char a = characters.charAt(i);
double j = score[i];
System.out.printf();//ToDo

Above is my current code. Basically- There is a string called characters of length 26 (1 char for each letter in alphabet), a double relativeFrequency value which does a calculation and the end result is a number with lots of decimal numbers. The score array has set double values within the array.

What I want to do is create a print f statement where I print out each of the values I initialized above WITH specific amounts of spaces in between. So it should be in this order:

a (spaces) j (spaces) relativeFreq (newLine).

Between J and relativeFreq there should be 4 spaces, however if the value in relativeFreq is greater than 10 (it won't be greater than 100)- then there should be 3 spaces. Everytime I try to create a printf statement my code ends up crooked for some of the values.

for (int i = 0; i < letters.length; i++) {
double relativeFreq = (onesAverage()/letters[i]);
char a = characters.charAt(i);
double j = score[i];
System.out.printf("%c %.4s %.4s%n",a, j, relativeFreq);

Unable To Use Double Data Type In For Loop

Aug 12, 2014

I am trying to use double data type in a for loop for precise operations and just to see if there could be any problem doing that I tested a small code :

public class doubleLimit {
public static void main(String[] args){
for(double i=-0.1;i<=0;i+=0.01)
System.out.println(i); }}

The output I was expecting is :
-0.1
-0.09
-0.08
-0.07
-0.06
-0.05
-0.04
-0.03
-0.02
-0.01
0.00

But the output of the code is :
-0.1
-0.09000000000000001
-0.08000000000000002
-0.07000000000000002
-0.06000000000000002
-0.05000000000000002
-0.040000000000000015
-0.030000000000000013
-0.02000000000000001
-0.01000000000000001
-1.0408340855860843E-17

Why is the code not working the way I expected, I think it has something to do with any property of double but I am not sure.

Not Getting Decimal For Surely Decimal Answer?

Jan 1, 2015

I'm using eclipse. I'm going to get straight to the point and give all the info I can, if the values in the first code box are used, shouldn't these values be left after all in the second box is done:

remainder=23, arr[0]=100, div=23/10=2.3, whole=2, and decimal=3?

When I use this code, div comes out to be just (2.0).

Java Code:

int leng=10;
arr[0]=123; //int
arr[1]=100; //int mh_sh_highlight_all('java'); Java Code: if (arr[0]!=arr[1]){
int remainder=arr[0]-arr[1];
arr[0]=arr[0]-remainder;
double div=remainder/leng; //double div=Double.valueOf(remainder/leng);
int whole=(int) Math.floor(div);
int decimal=(int) ((div-whole)*leng); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

I'm not sure were I'm going wrong in how div is being calculated, but I ultimately need div to be 2.3.

I've also used the second option commented out which still gives (2.0).

Why Use Extends Keyword Instead Of Implements In Generics

Feb 22, 2015

Why java uses the keyword extends when setting the bound of a type parameter(Generic) to an interface. I think using the keyword implements is more intuitive.

public static <T extends Comparable<T>>

why use extends? and not implements.

int countGreaterThan(T[] anArray, T elem) {
int count = 0;
for (T e : anArray)
if (e.compareTo(elem) > 0)
++count;
return count;
}

I know if I want to set multiple bounds I will use extends keyword, and I will concatenate the bounds using & operator.

Is this a design decision to always use extends keyword to set bounds?

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Creating RTFEditorKit In A Class That Already Extends JTextPane

Apr 8, 2015

I'm building a text editor. At this point, the editor should be able to read and write text and rich text. I create an instance of a RichTextEditor class that I created that extends a superclass I created (that extends JTextPane). Both my rich text and plain text classes extends the superclass I created. I use the this.read() to input my plain text from buffered reader. I think I need to use the read(fileinput stream, rtf document) method from type RTFEditorKit, but I cannot use that because it does not extend RTFEditorKit. I don't want to create a new class that extends RTFEditorKit because I need stuff from the JTextPane.

here are the classes on git... the super: TextEditorPane.java

The plaintext: TextEditorWrap.java

and the rich: RichTextEditor.java

I have fiddled with the read() method in different ways. In all cases, nothing loads. If I use the BufferedReader method, it doesn't give me an RTF, just the code for the RTF file.

How should I proceed? Do I create some sort of RTF interface and implement it?

How To Use Events In Place Of For Loop

Jun 30, 2014

I have two questions:

1. I read somewhere that instead of looping through every player (below), you use could Events to do it for you:

for (Player player : this.getPlayers()) {
if (player.getLocation().getX() == 10) {
}
}

I'm not sure as to how to use Events in place of a for loop. I've been thinking on this for days, but I'm still stuck. Any example of using an Event instead of a for loop?

2. Is there any way to accept multiple connections on a server without using a while loop? Maybe use Events to handle the acceptance of connections?
