Unable To Write Text File With Information Stored
Jul 27, 2014
I am trying to write to a text file with information stored like this.
brick 500
stone 500
And so on. Here is the code I am using to write to the file.
switch(record){
case "brick":
x.format("%s%n", "brick " + value);
closeFile();
break;
case "log":
x.format("
%s%n", "log " + value);
closeFile();
break;
When I write like this, putting deletes the first line. What I can look into or other functions that would be useful?

I'm trying to retrieve information from a json repository stored online. I have so far setup my code to create the string that could be used as the url. What I'm not sure about is how you setup a Json Parser?
- Would you recommend I use a library? I hear google-gson is meant to be good?
- How easy is it to convert a string into a URL? I assumed that this would be good enough
" String searchURL = "randomURL.com"
URL temp = new URL(searchURL);" ,
but I get a MalformedURLException.
- What do I need to know to use JSON?

I have this program to see the occurrences of a character in a string stored in a text file. My text file has the following contents (as shown below):
P-P-N-N-L-V
N-R-U-S-R-Q
K-Q-E-L-E-A
A-J-B-G-E-F
F-E-L-Q-R-R
U-F-J-V-I-M
P-I-Q-K-B-K
U-N-L-F-O-B
M-A-N-M-H-O
P-Q-J-D-N-I
G-U-O-D-F-I
Q-M-M-B-C-Q
N-B-I-L-E-J
S-A-T-Q-H-U
C-L-G-U-J-M
R-P-V-M-A-A
C-R-A-V-L-B
M-U-Q-K-M-Q
E-I-C-H-V-J
J-N-N-K-R-P
As you notice, each character is seperated by a hyphen (serving as its delimiter). I want to only go through 10 lines in the text, instead of all 20 of them. So, I wrote the program in such a way that I intend to reach into the indices of each character in the text file. Since there are six characters in each line so that means there are 6 indices - and there are 10 lines I only want to go through. So, 6 indices times 10 lines equals 60 indices. Hence, there are only 60 indices I need to go through. In that manner, it's like I have gone through only 10 lines through that way.
It compiled perfectly fine but upon running it, I ran through an error in the black DOS screen that says
"java.lang.ArrayIndexOutofBoundsException: 6 ".
How do I work around that?
The code I wrote is shown below...
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class hotandcoldclusterdeterminer_test {
public static void main (String args [])throws IOException {
[Code]....

I am completing a USACO online problem and am trying to create a print writer to write to my file(ride.out). I did this:
PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new BufferedReader(new FileWriter("ride.out")));
However, a load of undefined constructor errors come up for PrintWriter(BufferedWriter) and BufferedWriter(FileWriter). I have imported java.io.* so I don't know what the issue is. This has worked before.
edit: bufferedreader? i give up(not literally)

My code below creates the 2 files successfully, but it is not able to write the sample data into the newly created file. I can't figure out the reason why.
Another strange thing is that when I tried inserting System.out.println calls for debugging, nothing prints out.

// stuff here
}
catch(FileNotFoundException fileNF){
String dirString = System.getProperty("user.dir");
String defaultFile = "config";
String currentFile = "currentconfig";
Path filePath = Paths.get(dirString, defaultFile);
Path filePath2 = Paths.get(dirString, currentFile);

I wanna learn to create a method where I use a scanner or any other way to input.The stuffs I input will be strings. The whole thing will be like a destination creator.So if I input the string USA, it will write this to a file:
1:USA
When I go to the method again the ID will be added so if I input UK, the file will contain:
1:USA
2:UK
Now if I terminate the program, next time when I run it again it will be able to read the ArrayList, so if I wanna go to the method again and write: Norway the file will contain:
1:USA
2:UK
3:Norway
Later I also want to be able to use println to show all of these lines from the file, as well I would like to be able to delete an ID, so if I delete ID 2 the file would contain:
1:USA
3:Norway
I'm quite new to Java, I'm in a Java course since soon 3 weeks back and I have sure learned a lot, all the loops and basic statements that exist in most languages, but now when it comes to this I just don't understand.

I need to write a program where the user inputs name, age, email, and cell and write the user inputs to a text file. I need to have it so the file can be added to if more than one set of information is added. Currently, every time I click the button, the file is overwritten instead of added to. How do I correct this? Current code is as follows:
try
{
FileWriter writer = new FileWriter("ContactInformation.txt");
BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(writer);
nameTextField.write(bw);
bw.newLine();
ageTextField.write(bw);
bw.newLine();
emailTextField.write(bw);
bw.newLine();
cellTextField.write(bw);
bw.newLine();
bw.close();
nameTextField.setText("");
ageTextField.setText("");
emailTextField.setText("");
cellTextField.setText("");
nameTextField.requestFocus();
}

ABC is a company that designs and prints personal business cards. The company has asked you to write a Java application to display the layout of the information in a typical business card order. Data items in a typical business card include the customer's name, address, city, state, postcode, home phone number, and work phone number.
Write, compile, and test a Java class that displays these data items in a command window. Alternatively, you could also create it using a dialog box. Please include appropriate comments in your class.
Please named your class BusinessCard(LIM).java. (eq. BusinessCardLIM.java)

I already used properties file without problems for localizing information. In that case the property file was stored as a resource in a package; and I used the Class ResourceBundle to manage the operations and the ClassLoader to access to the file.
Actually I need to use property files “To save the configuration of the application”.In this case I need also to update information stored inside the file.property, and I used the same procedure as before to manage it (ClassLoader to get data- also for writing).
I had problems in this case: that the data was never modified inside the properties file. I investigate, and now I think that the problem comes from writing in the property file that is located in the .jar file. For what I know, it is impossible to change resources putted in the .jar files.
I found a solution: to store the properties files out the jar files; and in this way all is good. But it would be more comfortable to store inside.
My question is : if a file property used to “save the configuration of the application “ have to be put out of jar, or is there another way ??

I have a program that reads lines of text, but some of the lines of text aren't applicable and break the program. I'd like to put a letter in front of the lines in the .txt file I want to use, such as a #.
I need to make an if loop that'll check for the first letter on the line being #, and use the line in the program if true and skip if false. I'm guessing a boolean variable would be useful here to be true or false depending on the presence of #, but I don't know how to only read the first letter of each line, how can I do this?

I am developing a java swing application. In which i want to set a different text to a label in same program ( in single JFrame). I dont want to use another JFrame instead i want to use setText method of java and set different text to a label at different intervals of time according to my need.
I am using java 1.7 sdk and pupy linux as OS. Below i am giving source code.
What i am doing is in constructor of class i am setting an image to JFrame and setting text "Welcom...". And when user clicks on this JFrame a method is called which will clear the text "Welcome.." and sets new text to another label "Enter...." and from there another method is called and it clears label "Enter..." and sets a text "Plzz wait..". and yet there are more methods, i havnt provided here.
But what is happening is it shows welcome text and then directly Plzz wait..
Its not showing text Enter... because control is finished after last method gets executed.
My concern is i want to show all the setText (my messages) in a sequence. Without using another JFrame. There is no any user input other than user will click on first welcome page.
public class BackgroundFrame extends javax.swing.JFrame {
JLabel setTitle1;
JLabel setTitle2;
JLabel setTitle3;
JLabel setTitle4;

I am checking how to do following task.
01. pickup the selected text file and read the line by line and output the text in to visual text pane.
what i did:.
01. I wrote code that read the text file and output in to jave console/ also some of the interface.
the code read txt file:
Java Code:
String fileName = "C:/Users/lakshan/Desktop/lawyer.txt";
File textFile = new File(fileName);
Scanner in = new Scanner (textFile);
while(in.hasNextLine()){
[code]....
so it will read any text file dynamically and output to the text pane in interface. I think scanner code must be execute after the select the file from the browser and set the scanned result in to variable. then later out put the var as string in some jswing component?

I'm refitting a snippet of code I found on the net to write stuff into text files. After a bit of fiddling, here's what the code looks like in one of my classes:
public void addItem(String Item){
try{
Writer out = new OutputStreamWriter(fos, "UTF8");
out.append(Item);
out.flush();
// out.close();
}
catch (IOException e) {
System.out.println(e.toString());
}
}
The original snippet included the close() method. However, when I tried to do a test run writing multiple lines, I'd get an IOException about the stream being closed. I removed the close() method line, everything seems to work the way I want it, but I just wanna know if there's anything I'm missing out on by not having the close() method anywhere, especially when the IDE finds it important enough that it lit a warning about the stream not being closed somewhere as I was repurposing the original snippet.

I am trying to write a program that will generate a QR Code from an input text and also display some information about the input/output bits. So far I have created the frame and what to do next. And I'm not sure if I am on the right track since my level of programming is not that great. By the way, I am using zxing libraries from GitHub. I know, there are plenty of generators online for the QR Code, but that is not what I am looking for. As you can see on the attached image, I am more interested in the efficiency of encoding 2D data. Also, I noticed that almost all the online projects regarding 2D codes are for Android. Which is not very useful.

Basically, the program is to be able to read information from a file like this;
11111 63.5
22222 59.9
33333 82.4
44444 73.1
55555 77.3
66666 99.5
77777 68.7
88888 53.2
99999 66.8
where the first number is student number and the second is their grade. I need to read this information from a .txt file and dynamically create a new node containing that student's number and mark, and insert it in the correct position in the linked list (in descending order based on grade). So I get that each Node needs to contain two data types, an Int for Student # and a Double for their grade, and I'm pretty sure I've done it correctly with my StudentNode class which can be found in the source code linked above.
But what I don't get it using that class to create Nodes in my main class and then sort them based on their Double grade value WHILE they are being sorted. I just don't understand where to actually put the methods and such that does these things. Apparently I'm supposed to have three classes.
One named StudentNode which is just the node info, which I have done.
The second is called StudentList which is apparently supposed to contain the head of LinkedList and the methods I need? I'm not sure how it ties into StudentNode though.
The third and final is just the main class which I'll use to test it.
Then after all that I need to print out the median mark through a recursive method that isn't allowed to use any loops or call and functions/methods that use loops. The function should return the node in the list which contains the median mark. Secondly, in order to find the median, you need to know how many items in total are in the list. Your recursive function must calculate that number (also recursively); you may not keep track of this count elsewhere your program. Your recursive solution should only examine each node only once, and the depth of the recursion should be equal to the number of nodes in the list.
Here's my current in-progress code.
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.util.Scanner;
class StudentNode {
private int studentNum;
private double grade;
private StudentNode next;
[Code] .....
I'm pretty sure the StudentNode class is fine, it's the StudentList class that I'm not sure about. I'm not sure how to add nodes since there isn't a getNext() method in the StudentList class.
