View RepliesI want an app that I can use to save the name, address, item sold, subject discussed and date that I visited someone - in a job similar to a sales rep. I would like to be able to choose how to sort the info so that if I sort by date I can see who hasn't been visited for the longest and start there. If I think of someone's name then of course I want to sort by name.
One of my friends says he works with "php"[? I'm still learning these terms] and everything happens online. I would like it to be an android app so it can be done without an internet connection ....
I am trying to write a java program that asks the user for a list of names (one per line) until the user enters a blank line. At that point the program should print out the list of names entered, where each name is listed only once (i.e., uniquely) no matter how many times the user entered the name in the program. I am supposed to use an ArrayList for this problem.
My idea for a solution is to create an ArrayList<String>, read each name, i.e., line, entered and then to see if that name is already in the ArrayList. I created a for loop to check each element in the ArrayList but when I try to assign an element to a string variable I get the error "Type mismatch: cannot convert from Object to String". Not sure why that is happening because the ArrayList is defined as a String list.
Here is the code so far.
/*
* File: UniqueNames.java
*/
import acm.program.*;
import java.util.*;

i have this problem with my code. it need to put three names in alphabetical order that are entered from the user. then output the alphabetical result. the program compiles but when you put in different names there are not alphabeticals. i think only the first if works good.
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
public class Sort
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
String name1;
String name2;
String name3;
[code]...
Ex. If I type 5943, the program will say
mill = 5
hun = 9
ten = 4
uni = 3
get the picture I had to translate the decimal value names from a different language.
This is what I have tried...,
Java Code:
import java.util.Scanner;//Permite el uso de leer el teclado del usuario
public class DeterminarValorDecimal//Nombra el documento
{
public static void main(String [] args)//Podemos ver la clase
{
[Code].....
But what this does is I have to enter the single digits one by one. I want to be able to type the whole number. Is there a method that reads the length of the whole number and lets me classify each digit so I can do what I want to do?
Write a program that translates a number between 0 and 4 into the closest letter grade. For example, the number 2.8 (which might have been the average of several grades) would be converted to B. Break ties in favor of the better grade; for example 2.85 should be a B. Use a class Grade with a method getNumericGrade. why when I type .3 it tells me "Exception in thread "main" java.util.InputMismatchException" Or if there is an easier way to do this.
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Grades {
public static void main(String [] args) {
System.out.println("Enter a number between 0 and 4");
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
[code]....
i am new to programming skills it may be silly question for experience but for me it's new thing. actually i tried a lot but i am facing problem when i trying to take input through Scanner. if i will take input a sentence directly as a string it's working . but when i am trying with Scanner the first word is showing next are not showing
public class Demo2
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
String s1="hi how are you";
s1=s1.replace('a', 'A');
s1 =s1.replace('e', 'E');
s1 =s1.replace('i', 'I');
[Code]...
this is working properly.
but when i trying with Scanner i am facing problem.
public class Demo2
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
java.util.Scanner scn= new java.util.Scanner(System.in)
String s1=scn.next();
s1=s1.replace('a', 'A');

I am having a problem with SD array .i have to find the ASCII no. of names entered.
import java .io.*;

I need to make a program that keeps track of peoples names, allows you to add a note to each name and preferably would reorganize whatever you put in by date or by spelling. (I suppose the phonebook application in cell phones is a good match, a supermarket's list of foods and prices would work as well).

View Replies View RelatedRecently I have missed a few weeks of my class due to family emergencies. Because of this I have missed very important lectures. My professor has assigned me the following assignment:
Prices Write a Java program that specifies three one-dimensional arrays names price, amount, and total. Each array should be capable of holding 10 elements. Using a loop, input values for the price and amount arrays. The entries in the total array should be the product of the corresponding values in the price and amount arrays. After all the data have been entered, display the following output:
Total Price Amount
==== ==== ======
Under each column heading display the appropriate value.
I know how to display everything using printf, how to create the actual arrays and define the array size, but I am confused on how and what loop to use and how to construct it. This is what I have managed to write up so far:
import java.util.Scanner; // Imports the Scanner class
import java.text.DecimalFormat; // Imports the DecimalFormat class
public class Prices
{
public static void main(String [] args)
{
double[] price = new double[10];
double[] amount = new double[10];
double[] total = new double[10];
// Create a new Scanner object
Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);
} //End of main method
} // End of public class
I am working on my generic insertion sort program. When I completed and run my code, I am having trouble with my code. So, I am just trying to see if I get an correct array from a file. However, i just get so many nulls in the array. Therefore, I can't run my insertionSort function because of null values.
Here is my code
import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;

I'm doing a project with very defined requirements. Input and output will be done to and from a file. Both the input and output files should have the same format. Each file will consist of a series of lines formatted as follows:
Year Rank Artist Title
That is, each line of the file will consist of the year, rank, artist, and title of a single song, with each of the fields separated by tabs ( ). Output files must maintain this format—you should be able to use the output file of one run of the program as the input to another run.
The first part of my project is to make a Song class, with 6 methods:
public static Song parse(String s) { //Parse a string of the form “Year Rank Artist Title” and create a Song object with the given values.
}
public int getYear() { //returns the year of the song
}
public int getRank() { //returns the rank of the song
[Code] .....
So far, I have worked out my Song class like this:
Java Code:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Song {
private int year;
private int rank;
private String artist;
private String title;
[Code] ....
I know there's definitely a problem with my parsing, as I am getting the
Exception in thread "main" java.util.NoSuchElementException
when I attempt to input a test String at my variables.
Should I try using StringTokenizer and Integer.parseInt()? I think that perhaps the reason why an error is occuring is because the String is being parsed into Strings and there are no int values to be inputted into the year and rank variables.
Or is there a way to do this with Scanner?
I have a beginning Java Program I have been working on that creates a number guessing program where the computer guesses a number that the user is thinking of within a certain range. I so far have the program below, but need getting rid of a few kinks/ adding features.
-First, I need to set it up so that the user will be prompted and give a range. It should run and produce something like this:
Welcome to this first-ever mind-guessing program!
Please pick a range (higher than 1 and no larger than 50): 32
You will choose a number between 1 and 32... and I will try to guess it.
With each of my guess, you will tell me whether I am too high (h or H), too low (l or L), match (m or M), or you want to quit (q or Q). My objective is to find the number using as few guesses as possible.
-Second, the game is supposed to give up and restart after failing the five, guesses, but for some reason, after it fails the fifth time, it prompts a fifth guess once again instead, then restarts after- I need to prevent this, so that it should look something like this:
My fourth guess is 17: h
My guess is too high?
My fifth guess is 16: h
*** I am unlucky this round. I give up.
Let's play!
My first guess is 10:

int[] arr=randomNummbers(1, 20);
for(int j=0;j<arr.length;j++){

although this code generate random numbers but some values are also getting duplicate.So how to write a program for random number that will not repeat any integer in range?
ex
Sample input:2340980
Sample Output:23498
this is the program i have tried but is dosent work

What I'm supposed to be doing is making it so the program can accept multiple filter and sort commands at one time, and each should be separated by a whitespace.I was thinking about parsing the input again, using whitespace as the delimiter, then normally progressing with each token, as though there was only one command.
However, coding this the way I'm doing it will firstly probably take hours, and secondly, it's likely not even right. I don't have any real way to determine which token contains which data from the Song objects.These are the specific requirements for this portion:A sort/filter command consists of one or more of the following options:
-year:<year(s)>
-rank:<rank(s)>
-artist:<artist>
-title:<title>
-sortBy:<field>
Any number of these options may be given, and they may be given in any order. If multiple options are specified, they will be separated by whitespace.

I am having some trouble with this program. The assignment is to write a program, given a seven-digit phone number, uses a PrintStream object to write to a file every possible seven-letter word combination that corresponds to that number. I have to avoid using 0 or 1. Here is my code.

I am getting an error dealing with the main class.
I am trying to write a code that allows a user to input the number of stones in a basket, then put the stones in my pocket, after the stones are in my pocket, the stones must be taken out, one by one, and thrown in a pond. I get stuck at this part because my for statement has to subtract the number of stones in my pocket (one at a time) and add a stone to the pond (one by one) at the same time.I can get the pond stones to increase until the max amount of stones with the following:
for (int i = 0; i < stones; i++) {
System.out.println("Pocket:" ? " " + "Pond:" + i);
how to reduce one and add to other. Is it possible to do this in one for statement? I tried to put stones-- in place of the question mark, but that is not working.
How do I write a program that has words in an array and output that array without the vowels?
View Replies View RelatedI am currently trying to count and display all the vowels in a set of given strings and can't seem to figure out what to do. I was able to print the line with the most vowels, but i also need to display them. The code is listed below and the given output.

My name is whatever and I am originally from the state of Virginia.
I recently separated from the Air Force where I served on the Presidential Honor Guard.
The line with most vowels is:

I have been assigned to write a program that has a user input random numbers then the program is to sort them in different ways. I have the coding for the different sorts but, I have an error saying that I am missing a return statement in the "Bubble" method. I am trying to return "arr[i]" in the "for loop" which gives me this error, and when I try to take the "return arr[i]" outside of the "for()" loop the error reads the it cannot locate variable "i".
