[Enter] Character Creating New Record During Import
Dec 14, 2007
Hello all. I've tried searching the forums as well Google for an answer for my problem, but perhaps I'm not searching on the correct key words. Would someone please point me to a post that addresses the below issue.
My company has a customer service (CS) application where our CS agents document CS requests. For reporting purposes, they drop a text file containing open service requests that I then import in Access 2003 so I can analyze the data. I've had the vendor use È (ALT+0200) as the delimiter and double-quotes to enclose text.
This has been working well until the application vendor upgraded the app last week. Now, whenever a user hits the [Enter] key to create a new line in the comments section of the application, a new line is created during the import process into Access.
When I view the text file I can see the Enter Character because it is displayed as (except it looks more like a rectangle standing in its short side.)
I thought if creating a macro to run on the text file to delete the enter characters, but I can't find a way to systemically find the character. So far, the only solution on my end is to manually delete the characters, but that's unrealistic because there are thousands of records.
Thank you in advance for pointing me to a helpful post or commenting here.

Hi, sorry about the unwieldy title: I appear to have reached a limit while adding fields to a fixed width text table which is imported to Access on a monthly basis using Import Conditions to define the field start points and lengths. Using the Import Conditions wizard, I cannot add any break points beyond the 495th character. Is this a known limit, or has anyone found a way around? I've tried both Access '97 and 2002. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I am currently a SQL DBA, and have been roped in to help a fellow staff member import some XML data into an access database. I am using Office 2003, and the Get External Data command. It successfully imports all of the data, but my colleague says that it is not acceptible because the data is being converted to UTF-8 encoding. He would like it to retain the same original encoding as the XML file. Is there any way I can do this?
I have a program that has been working for a year or so, it imports records form a text file created by a web site. Someone has entered a hex("1A", "A8" in a name field. It is shutting my program down. I tried a alphanumeric check to replace it and a length check to try and skip the record but the program thinks it is at the end of the file and quits reading records. Is there a way to get rid of characters like this in vba?
"5407 MUYF3I23 GIS..LE "
Here is what I have tried
Code: If Len(strread) <> 591 Then MsgBox "Invalid Record Read " & strread GoTo Skip_Loop End If If AlphaNumeric(CStr(Trim(Mid(strread, 32, 11)))) Then !HT_FName = CStr(Trim(Mid(strread, 32, 11)))
I am doing my internship now and am new to vba and excel. I need help with the following.
I need to create a form which allows the user to enter records into a table. The fields for this table is [product type], [Reasons] and [Breaks]. However for each [product type] there is a specific list of [reasons] and [breaks]. I need to reflect this onto the form using drop down lists or list box. That is if the user selects [product 1], the associated [reasons] and [breaks] will populate the other 2 list box. And then the user will click the update button to insert a new record into the table.
Can somebody help me out here? Thanks so much in advance.
I have a form that when the end user is searching for previous records it creates an erroneous record based off of the search criteria. I want it to create a record ONLY when the "Enter" button is pressed.
Is there a way to limit the form to creating records only when ENTER is clicked on?
I am a newbie at Access. I have uploaded an Access 2013 file and an Excel 2013 file to show what I am trying to do.
(I also incorrectly uploaded this question under QUERIES - since marked there as 'Solved")
The Access tables that I have created are meant to mirror the individual fields on the Excel spreadsheet.
On the Excel spreadsheet, I would enter data in the rows as the data becomes available.
The Access file contains the excel fields as tables. Some of the table fields consist of only one field and others have many fields.
I have created Primary Keys in all the tables. But I don't understand the process well at this point in time.
I need to know how to create proper relationships, and then, to create a query or a form to enter new data as it becomes available so that I can keep adding rows of data (query to enter and update data) and subsequently run queries to analyze the data
Need to create the correct relationships and a query that lets me update all the data for new cases, as an individual row (like on an excel spreadsheet) .
I am stumped: After importing from an outside source (an excel spreadsheet) I have to change the short-date format that I have just imported into a very specific custom format: "yyyymmdd" Ex: 20040828. How do I convert into this new format? Help will be greatly appreciated...
I need to know how to auto enter the date of the previous record into a new record. I have this db for my vehicle log sheets and I submit monthly a claim for the business km from my company. I usually cant remember the date of the previous claim and have to scroll back until I find the field with a date. It will be useful if the date was copied into every new record until I edit the date when I submit the claim. What I ask is during the new month all the dates will be the same until I submit the claim. I do not know how to do this, and yes I have done a search.
I have a Parent Record "Events" which has data already entered into it. I now want to assign workers to work the "event". The child table is "Assigned Officer". They have a one (event) to many(employees) relationship. Both the parent and the child have the key "Event ID". Of course Event ID is a subkey in the employee's table.
Every time I enter an employee it creates a new blank event.
I have a problem with a DB I just designed. It has a combobox that is populated from a query, and it works great. However, the problem is that when I enter a new record the combobox is not being cleared, and is "holding" the data from the previous record. How can I get it to "reset"?
I have a new scenario today! I have searched database design to try to figure this out and have an effective database as well as adding multiple records to one table that is linked to 1 record in the other table.I have a master student list with their information that has the fields
Student ID LastName FirstName Address City Zip Community
I have another table that has the fields
ClassName Date Community Instructor
What I would like to do is be able to create a form that can add multiple classes for each student. For example, I have Student 1. Student 1 has attended class A, B, C, and D. I would like the form to have the student's name and ID with a way to add multiple classes linked to that student.
I have a main form with several tabs. Each of those tab has one subform linked to its related table. I would like to be able to enter a new item in one of the table via the subform and I used the following code:
Code: Private Sub Form_Load() DoCmd.GoToRecord acDataForm, Me.tblEmetteurs_AddItems_subform.Name, acNewRec End Sub
I obtain a msg error from the debogger: "Compile error: Method or data member not found."
How can I update all the queries when I enter a new record in a form? When I enter a new employee record in a form, I want all the queries that are related to the employee information table to be updated with this new entry.
I have a main form created from a query (FrmQuerySearchResults) which has a sub-form within, (FrmPresentationsTabular) which I am using to show each presentation to our service made by any given client.
For ease of use, I've removed the navigation buttons and want to replace them with my own command buttons. For appearance, I've changed the properties of the sub-form so that 'allow additions' is set to No. This is so that the list of presentations users see does not show the bottom row as a new record.
I'm trying (using macros) to add a button in the footer of the subform that opens a new form (FrmNewPresentation) which opens to a blank record allowing the user to click button, enter info, hit close.
I'm having all sorts of trouble getting this button to do as its told! So far, I have a macro that has 2 steps, first it opens FrmNewPresentation, then it has action GoToRecord, with record set to New, object type set to Table, object name set to Presentations (the name of my table populating this sub-form).
I realise the problem may be the allow additions property being set to No, so I believe I need to add parts to this Macro that goes to that property and changes it on opening the input form - I keep getting a message saying "The object 'Presentations' isn't open.
I'm creating a simple database to document our supplier's contact information, addresses etc. However, when I create a combo box on the form and try to enter a record not on the list it gives the message "The Text You Entered Isn't an Item in the List".
Hi All, I have a form that when loads, runs some VBA on the "On Current" event. Some of that code, fills in text boxes, with concatenated (?) strings. So every time I use the record selector and get to the end of all the records, the "On Current" fires adds the concatenated string (even if it's empty), and that then becomes a new record! Is there some way i can prevent this, but still keep the "On Current" event, some type of logic I could run before the concatenations etc.
Well from reading the forums i have learned alot about access but now i am stuck and can't find what i am looking for.
I am building a database basically to track the Software bought for our company.
I have my Application table and my purschased table. The relationship between the two is ApplicationID.
What i need is to be able to do is look up the ApplicationID and then have that vaule be added to the new purschase record. My method of doing this was to created a form with 3 list boxes and 1 text box (not viewable). The list boxes are Company, Application, Version. The text box is the returned ApplicationID.
The list boxes dynamically adjust based on your selecetion to find the vaule of the 1 text box "ApplicationID".
Once you have selected the application you want to add as a purschase i have a button to open the Purschase form. I have everything that needs to be filled out in the form. My problem is getting the vaule of ApplicationID in the purschase form for the new record.
My problem;
Right now when the Purschase form opens it as all the data and the ApplicationID is shown as being correct but not selected. Right now the user would have to manualy select the vaule for the data to be commited to the record.
How do i selected a record so the data is submittied and a new record is started, on open, then set the focus onto a new field. This way the user does not have to do it manually.
I have a list of incidents in my Incidents Management Database. It comes up as a grid view when users open the database.
This is what it looks loke (paste the following into address bar of your browser. lh5.google.com.au/snehal.dabhi/R8oc22J_RfI/AAAAAAAABz0/bbIkCzg5whk/image001.png
I want particular incident to open in a form when users double click on any particular incident from the list above. For example double clicking on the first incident (dated 1/03/2008 in the list above) should open the form below with THAT PERTICULAR incident. And double clicking on 22nd incident should open the following form with 22nd incident loaded, so users can edit that incident

Any detailed help is much appreciated. – I am too new to understand macros and vba. Thanks!
I am having a problem updating a record on a table called BookInTable . The field I want to update is called Engineer and the record is found using the field Barcode. I have a form with 2 text boxes BarTxt and EngTxt as well as a button called SaveBtn. on the OnClick event of the SaveBtn I put the following code
Code:
Private Sub SaveBtn_Click() If IsNull(Me![BarTxt]) Or (Me![BarTxt]) = "" Then MsgBox "Please enter a value!", vbOKOnly, "Invalid Search Criterion!" Me![BarTxt].SetFocus Exit Sub End If
DoCmd.RunSQL "Update BookInTable SET Engineer = " & Me!EngTxt & " WHERE BarCode ='" & Me![BarTxt] & "'"
End Sub
But this is bringing up the enter Parameter value dialog box for whatever I type into EngTxt. If I enter text into that box and then click okay it then updates to the record. how can I stop the from enter Parameter value dialog box appearing?
