Access 2007: Wireless Network Problem On Vista

I found a somewhat related thread but thought I would post a new one just in case my problem happens to others who were 'forced' to "upgrade" to Windows Vista Home Basic when buying a new machine....
Okay, no more complaining, here's the issue:
I have a small (8 MB) Access 2007 database stored on a machine in the office which is running Windows Vista Home Premium. There are two other machines running Windows XP Home (SP2) that can connect to the Access 2007 database with no issues.
But on my Dell Inspiron Vista Home Basic machine, I cannot successfully open the database stored on the Home Premium machine. I CAN see this database, I can see other files and open/copy them, but I cannot open the database. I am attempting to do this using the wireless connection.
I tried running these two commands as the administrator (found on another forum) because I think this is more of a network problem rather than an Access 2007 problem specific to Windows Vista Home Basic
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
But these two commands did nothing.
I should also point out that when this database is stored on an XP machine (one of the others in the office) the database opens just fine on this Vista Basic machine!
I'm confused and frustrated! Any help is very much appreciated.

does anyone know if there are issues using Acess on a wireless network? There seems to be problems access the database now that this has been installed... Lots of reboots required etc...

There are posts elsewhere on this forum about the adjustments you can make to Access to improve its performance on a wireless network, i.e. make sure you have XP SP2 and not an earlier version of XP, but the fact is that no programme will perform well on a network if the network isn't performing well. Here are a few things I've learned (the hard way!)
- Use USB wireless adapters, not card type adapters. One of the prime rules of wireless networking is to keep your adapter - and your Router - away from electrical equipment and metal objects, so why anyone even makes card adapters is beyond me.
- Place your adapters/Router as high as possible (above head height is best) using a USB extension lead for the adapters if necessary. Do not put them on or near metal filing cabinets!
- Think about line of sight when placing your equipment. If your Router and an adaptor are just on either side of a wall , opposite each other, the signal may only have to pass through, say, 6 inches of wall. If they are at opposite ends of their respective rooms, however, it may have to pass through several feet of the same wall!
-If there are other wireless systems nearby using the same channel as yours, change yours to a different channel even if the other signal is weaker than yours. Remember that you need to be 5 channels away from anyone else before there is 0% overlap in the frequencies. If you cannot achieve this because there are too many nearby networks, any difference is better than none.
I have a 9 user (each in a separate room) p2p network in my office running a split Access 2000 db. The place looks a bit odd with USB adapters stuck high up on the walls but it works. Only one user has the occasional hanging problem (about once a week) but she's using an oldish laptop with only 256k of RAM and it has to run Norton Internet Security at the same time. Three of the users have the db open more or less constantly, the rest have no problem or speed issues getting in whenever they wish.
Nearly forgot, our Wireless system is standard 802.11g. max distance from an adapter to the router is about 80 feet.

I have completed a database for a company with 60 000 clients and over 100 000 job records.
The database works at very resonable speeds on the Server computer, or the computer on which I installed the back end of the database.
Each of the other 3 computers on the wireless network, have a local copy of the Front End on their machine, and reference the Back End (BE) on the server computer.
Each of the Client computers have varing speeds when accessing the BE, some as slow as 10 minutes for a simple search, filter or just loading a form.
What can I do to improve performance across the network?
Do I need to install additional components on the other computers to improve the db performance?
Your help will be much appreciated.

I have a customer that did not read my recommended hardware specs and bought a Vista machine with Office 2007 preloaded on it.
My application uses a Access 2003 database and it is working fine in the Vista environment. The database utilizes Access security and has a database password.
My problem is that I can't see any data that has been entered! I have ran queries and opened the tables, but it is as if there is no data in the tables. However, my application can still read the data...this is a very weird problem! This is a tech support nightmare!
Has anyone had a similar problem?

Does anyone have any experience with placing a multi-user back-end access database on one of these inexpensive "external network hard drives"?
I have a situation where I'd like to share my database with multiple users, but the corporate IM rats have pretty much eliminated all means of allowing us lowly employees of doing that with their network. We have no file server. We do have sharepoint services, but we only have Access 2000, which as far as I know is not capable of exploiting the sharepoint/xml back-end database features. Also, no one in the office here can share a directory on their workstation because they won't grant us administrator priveledges.
So thats how I came upon the idea of buying or creating cheap (<$250 USD) wireless network hard-drive on which to put the back-end. I'm mainly interested in knowing if it will work, and that the performance isn't going to be absolutely pathetic. I'm only looking at having 3 or 4 users at any one time, and the entire database will only house a couple thousand records.

I have an Access DB shared through a network folder. It is currently frozen and showing a record lock, however, none of the users have it open. Is there a way to kill the lock so I can restore it?

I have designed a database which I intend to split for multi-users to access from one front end icon on a shared folder at work. I have designed a form bound to cmr record table and on it a subform to another table where cmrs activities will be saved. The form has buttons to and blank controls.
User can create a new activity entry by typing into the blank controls and pressing the save button which saves to the activity table. the edit button extracts a selected records details (selected on the subform) from the activity table and populates the blank field for a user to edit and then hit save to save changes. The delete button deletes a selected record from the activity table. I intend to have multi-users either accessing, viewing and a possibly editing the same customer at the same time. The simultaneous viewing is essential but the simultaneous editing, though not desired is inevitably going to occur.
What I would like to know is:
1. Can you lock an individual record in a table or does the whole table have to be locked. E.g If Colleague 1 is editing Cmr A's record in Table1 can he lock it so Colleague 2 can view and edit Cmr B's record in Table1
2.Can Colleague 1 access/read Cmr A's record in Table1 to retrieve details toe the form controls if Colleague 2 is viewing or editing Cmr A's record in Table1
3. If record lock is possible, how can I initiate it in my example code below.Edit activity record Code

I've been perfectly happy with Access97 and WindowsXP.
But my laptop's circuitboards have deteriorated, and I need a new computer. I'm wondering what the real-world has to say about using Access 97 with Windows Vista. Does it run seemlessly? Please say yes.
I have an application which I've been improving since 1998. I tried a demo of Access 2007, and did not like the way my app interfaced with it, and I don't relish a whole lot of reworking. But I don't want to buy a laptop with an obsolete operating system.
Tell me you've used it and it's wonderful.

Hi, i have a problem with an access database, well 2 problems. first is i don't know much about databases. the second is at work we installed 3 computers in an office with windows vista o/s. they then had a company come in and install software for their business. They were using office 2000 access database on xp previously. The company installing their software copied the access 2000 database to the vista target machines, i believe they may have converted the database to access 2003 version when doing this. The problem is the database doesn't work and they have called us back in to sort out the problem. Well we installed service packs, fixes, patches etc and googled a lot but found no simlar problems or solutions, in short we are stumped. I think the database is compiled into an app or something with switchboard etc, which i think means i can't access it? anyway it opens up with a logon form to get into DB, i enter the username and password and click ok and it gives a message saying:
"the expression on click you entered as the event property setting produced the following error"
it goes on to say there may be problem with an "event,function or macro"
on vista with office 2003 it lists several possible causes which i havent access to right now.
i have now tried it on my own pc with xp pro and office 2007 and it basically gives the same message as above but the list of possible causes is reduced to this one:
"This error occurs when an event has failed to run because Microsoft Office Access cannot evaluate the location of the logic for the event. For example, if the OnOpen property of a form is set to =[Field], this error occurs because Access expects a macro or event name to run when the event is fired"
Can anyone explain or point me in the right direction of where to get a solution. I think this is something for a programmer to solve and possibly something that the original database programmers should be looking at rather than me. am i right?

I created an Access Runtime Database Download on Windows XP. One of my clients downloaded the db to Windows Vista. The installation went fine and he was able to populate the database with no problem. However, now he needs to send me back the data and we cannot seem to access any data files. The backend.mdb file appears to be blank, even know the data appears on the front end. We have tried searching the computer to find any hidden files it might be saving the data to and there doesn't appear to be any. I have tried copying the entire folder containing both the frontend and the backend to a jump drive and looking at the data on a different computer and it appears to be blank. This doesn't seem to happen on any other OS. Since it is a runtime version of Access, I am not able to export any files or even view anything of administrative value within the DB. When I look at the backend.mdb in Explorer, the modified date is old, so it doesn't seem to be adding the data to the backend, even though it is theoretically linked to it. Does anyone know where this data might reside or of a workaround of how to extract this data???

Will Access 2000 run on Vista? I've heard that it will, but I would like to verify that before I purchase the upgrade. I currently use Access '97.
Also, does Access 2000 have to be "product activated" like the newer versions?

Hi there - hopefully someone can help me out, as we've got clients waiting on my response to this problem!!! :eek:
Anyway, my company produces an Access 2000 MDE which we ship with the Access 2000 runtime (just in case our clients don't have full Access installed)
We've had a number of calls saying that our app doesn't run on Vista, and the error provided points towards a reference problem. However, when I load the MDB on Vista using Access 2007, there are no reference issues.
Is this problem related to Access 2007 reference ("Microsoft Access 12.0 Object Library") somehow being used instead of the Access 2000 one? ("Microsoft Access 9.0 Object Library") - I am about to try uninstalling Access 2007 and running the app again to see if that helps...?
Any help greatly appreciated!

'Function is not available in expressions in query expression Format([Period],"mmm-yy")'.
I also have other problems with functions in queries ie DateAdd etc.
Any solutions?

In our company we use a windows 2003 server. Our database is ms access 2002. The back end of the db is situated in a directory on the primary HD of the server.
All our workstations use windows professional. The DB works great when inputting data from workstations using widows pro.
I use a vista (ultimate) laptop. It appears that when I enter data from my vista laptop at times it corrupts the backend of the db. None of the other workstations do this.
Is vista a problem here in this situation?

Hi everyone.
Have been testing installation of Office XP Developer Access 2002 runtime package created using the package wizard on a WinXP Pro SP2 machine, for installation on a Vista RC2 5840 machine.
After installing the latest necessary updates such as Office XP Developer SP1 among others which were essential to remove the Path/File error I had, A new error displayed itself as soon as the runtime install package launched.

Visual Basic 6.0 Setup Toolkit (Error Window Title Bar)
The Office System Pack cannot be installed on this system because it requires Windows NT Service Pack 6 or later.

I assume Windows NT SP6 has no relevance to Vista ???
Maybe some other update will help here. I have googled for hours to no avail.

On trying to import an Excel 2007 file into Access 2007 I get the following:
1) Choose "External Data," Import, Exce
2) Select small file in MS Excel 2007 format.
3) Click on Import the source data into a new table ...
4) Choose OK
Immediately get "Microsoft Office Access has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..." This message never resolves, so I have to click 'Cancel'.
Then I get "Microsoft Office Access is trying to recover your information..." I have to click "Cancel" here as well and then kill MS Access in Task Manager.
Event Viewer gives following message, which is of no help:
"ID: 2, Application Name: Microsoft Office Access, Application Version: 12.0.6211.1000, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.6215.1000. This session lasted 710 seconds with 120 seconds of active time. This session ended with a crash."
Trying to import a small Excel 2003 file leads the same result. The same happens with a CSV file.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2007 as well. I am using Vista Ultimate.
I have turned off DEP.
How can I get MS Access 2007 to import Excel?

I installed Office Enterprise 2007. Then I installed DEveloper Exrtensions, then Access Runtime 2007. All appear to have installed OK - they appear in Program and Features.
Instructions on runtime packaging tell me that a Developer option should appear in the resulting drop-down when I click the Office button (top-left round thing) when I have a d/b open in Access. It's not there! I have un-installed and re-installed the extensions and the runtime - still nothing!
Help!
I do have Runtime 2002 (XP) on the same PC, is that relevant?

Okay I know i've been incredibily stupid and made a tremendous mistake but what i need is the best solution to the problem i have right now...
I have a database its msaccess with SQL Tables at the moment. There were an expected 40 wireless users expected but after horrendous crash on day one and only 10 users and after some digging i see that this is just not going to happen (why i assumed it would be ok is my own naivity and taking the word of the IT Manager)... the connection is totally unreliable and corrupts the database beyond repair.. infact i'd go so far as to say the wireless network murdered my database.. strong words but its my baby..
So what are my solutions here... the staff need this database... so what i have come up with are the following solutions and i thought i should ask for some advice before i plough ahead and make another fatal error..
use DAP? Or another internet based way of getting round it?
Get network points put in all the rooms?
Or can I make it totally SQLServer?
Help.. any advice would be greatly appreciated cause at the moment i have a fantastic application that just cant run and i feel such a complete failure.

For the past several years I have been designing and building Access databases. They are designed for small evironments to be used on one machine only.
I am now faced with a situation where my client would like to have his database placed on his network server so it can be accessed by several computers.
This is a little outside my area of expertise.
I have searched the forum but I keep coming up with references to front end and back end and other things I don't understand.
Can someone point me in the right direction to search for:
what should be on the netword and what should be in the computer.
what changes should I make to the database stand-alone vs. network.
what unexpected problems should I expect.
Or perhaps you could suggest a book I could buy to assist me.

I have problem sharing an Access 2013 file from one cumputer and then change the data in the file on another computer, or i can change it but the change wont be made one both computers.
I'm working so i need my secretary to be able to change information or add, but i also need to get the change.

I have an access database that I created and setup user level security. I have encrypted the database and followed the directions of removing the admin from the admins group and created the new *.mdv file. When I access the database I get prompted for a username and password. When someone else from another computer accesses the same database they don't get prompted for anything and can go in and edit or access anything in there. Is there a way for me to secure the database up so they can't do this. The whole purpose of me setting up the User Level Security was for all users to have to login to there respective groups.

I'm doing some support for a company who's access is on a network. I think it must have been setup so that their login to the network determines whether they can access it or not, although it still asks for a username and password.
Anyway I have a local copy of the database and a username and password for the administrator. But I can't open the copy I'm getting the error
" you do not have the necessary permissions to use the "filename" object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this object establish the appropriate permissions for you"
I was hoping to be able to work on the database without having to be on site all the time. Is there anyway around this? or do I have to go back onsite to resolve it, and when there how do I do it :confused:
