Access - Locked Table For Editing
Aug 31, 2012
I have a table which is linked to a form which has been working fine for over a year now but yesterday the table "locked" for editing. I can now only copy data from the table. The editing functions delete, cut, new etc are not working, we can still filter the data.If we enter data on the form it creates a new line on the table but we cannot edit directly from the table.

I have a form with a lookup, which when a product code is entered, the description automatically appears.
This is fine 99% of the time, but occasionally an unusual product needs to be added or the description slightly changed.
Is there a way around this problem, as when using the lookup, this field is then locked and cannot be edited at all
Thanks
Chris

I copied Odun's post below to describe my problem. I'm having the same problem. I can't even creat a new blank database without being prompted for my user name and password, which aren't working.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

can't log on to database
Hi all,
I was playing with passwords for one of my access db.
I tried opening the db with the password, but it won't work. So, I thought I forgot the password. I checked some posts on this forum that helped in retrieving the password and it's the same that I have been trying. I am not sure if the Name is correct, is there a way to retrieve the log on name?
I also noticed that when I try opening any other db on my system, it asks me to log on, I though I was only applying a password to one file.
Please help
Thanks!

I have a MS Access 97 database that seems to be locked. I wish to update it but I cannot open it as a regular file. When it is opened, there is no way to edit the database or access any of the controls that are usually present. The tool bars are even different.
Any idea?
Thanks,
WJ

Hi All
I am using OLEDB to connect to an Access DB and it does use the "admin" account as the default user to connect from within Access i.e. this is not a Windows account.
I have an ASP.NET web page that is trying to do a compact and repair using a jet/MDAC object called JRO (Jet Replication Object).
The problem is whenever I call the JRO object I get this error:
"You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user 'admin' on machine..."
If I try and delete the .ldb file it is ofcourse locked. I found that if I do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and end the aspnet_wp process I am then able to delete the .ldb file and then successfully execute the compact and repair from the ASP.NET web page.
The aspnet_wp process when ended simply restarts itself (a new instance no doubt) and in doing so cannot remember it had a lock on the access db.
My conclusion is that the aspnet_wp process locks the access db file for or on behalf of the "admin" user in the access db.
Even if all connections have been closed the aspnet_wp process has a lock on the database file!
I am still searching for a way to tell the aspnet_wp to let go of the access db file!
I did use getprocessbyname() from the ASP.NET page to try and kill the instance of aspnet_wp programmatically and try and force it to forget by starting a new instance of itself, but ofcourse IIS gets really upset and won't let me kill this process from an ASP.NET page because I figure that in this case its suicide and aspnet/IIS won't "kill" itself but would be happy to "kill" other processes.
Anyway, I would have been content with the "kill the aspnet_wp process instance" approach except it won't suicide.
Does anyone have any idea how I might tell the aspnet_wp process to let go of the acccess db file?
By the way, I found the only account you need in a dev environment is the ASPNET account with read/write access and also your own account if you want to browse the folder yourself. No other accounts needed.
Any ideas appreciated.
I think this one has me beaten

I am completely locked out of my Access Database!
Basically, I have 3 forms which have all got the properties set to DISALLOW right clicking on them to prevent users accessing the design of the form, they all have code behind them so that they cover the entire screen and block ALL menus/shortcuts apart from those available on the form and I have set up a command button on each form which is password protected to ONLY allow Admins to access the design/backend of the form/database when they enter a valid password.
However, I was playing around with the settings of all these forms and have inadvertantly locked myself out, the last thing I remember doing was setting up a "Password" form to collect the Administrator password which had code attached to allow access to the database design. This was working fine until I tried "tweaking" it and now whenever I input the CORRECT password, I get the error message;-
"Error 2585: This action can't be carried out while processing a Form or Report event"
If I enter an INCORRECT password, I get the standard "Login Failed-Please try again" form that I have set up.
The "Password" form doesn't have an override/Cancel (I wanted to make it REALLY secure) it means that although I can use the database fine for entering/editing information/data within the database when it first opens, as soon as I want to make changes to the design and try to log in with "Admin" privellages using my custom made "Password" form, it then pops up with the password screen and goes no further.
I do have a backup of this database BEFORE I set up the "Password" security to collect the "Admin" Password but I can't remember the code I used and although I can work it out again, it will take me a LONG time to work it out again. So I was wondering if any of you might have some ides or a workaround I could try to gain back "Admin" rights to my database.
Does this makes sense? As stated I do have a backup so if all else fails I'm going to have to try to remember how I got it working in the first place BEFORE I cocked it up but if any of you could save me the trouble that would be very much appreciated!
Thank you very much
Alex

It's asking me for Login Details even on a blank database.
Anyone got any ideas?

I am using a form with command buttons to allow an administrator with limited Access knowledge to update certain tables. This is usually done by opening a form that is linked to the table and allow for changes. For one particular table, I would like the Administrator to be able to make the changes directly in the table. I would like for them to access the table with a command button. Here is the code I am using to update the table through the form. How do I need to change it to open the table and not the form. I tried changing the DoCmd to OpenTable and changed the stDocName to "tblStaff" but I received a compile error.
Your help is appreciated.
Private Sub cmdPermission_Click()
On Error GoTo Err_cmdPermission_Click
Dim stDocName As String
Dim stLinkCriteria As String
stDocName = "frmStaff"
DoCmd.OpenForm stDocName, , , stLinkCriteria
Exit_cmdPermission_Click:
Exit Sub
Err_cmdPermission_Click:
MsgBox Err.Description
Resume Exit_cmdPermission_Click
End Sub

I greatly appreciate your help on 2 issues:
1/ At work, I have Access 2000 application residing on a Novel server for multiusers purpose. Everyday, occasionally, the application is locked out by whoever opens first (I think?). Some of other users could not open it since it has the message like "locked out by a particular (computer name)...". Therefore the user of that computer name needs to close the application so others can open it. This issue is not happen in Access 97 as we used that version before and it is not consistent happening, so I could not find the pattern or know why?? Please let me know if you have seen this problem and how to prevent it...
2/ Do we have a way to trigger or initiate GroupWise email inside an Access 2000 application. For example, if a purchase order is created in Access 2000 application, I want to email a co-worker...OR it can be automatically sent an email to my supervisor for notifying the purchase order so he can approve it?
Thanks so much in advance for all the helps...

Hello,
I have created a table containing jobs that need to be done from my team (IT production). Each time someone start or finishes a job, he must fill a box that updates a specific row in the table. I want to log the time of that action.
Any ideas of how I could set this up in Access? I have tried the Now() function in the Default Value of the field End Time, but this is updated everytime I refresh the table

I hope I can explain this:
I have a database with a table "Itinerary" it has two fields "Date of Visit" and "Agency Number"
I have a second table that is linked from a different database "Agent Info"
I created a form based on the "Itinerary" Table then I put in a sub form to show the "Agent Name" and "Market Rep" from the "Agent Info" table.
The relationship is on Agent number in both tables. The user then adds the agent number on the form and the Agent name and Market rep automatically come in.
The problem is the user wants to be able to occasionally modify the info in the Agent Name and Market Rep fields. But does not want the new info to be changed on the original "Agent Info" table.
Can this be done?
I hoep someone can help.

This being my first post, id like to thank everyone who contributes here.. ive been watching this site for a while, and its been a simply amazing source of knowledge.
Now that the sucking up is over, HELP! 8)
Im developing a database that is going to take over tracking point to point connections between servers and switches in our data center. The system that the users currently use now is a simple flat excel spreadsheet.
Im wondering if there is a way to allow users to enter data in a format that they are familiar with... Tables 'look' the same but unfortunately for the people that I work with they dont (seem to) have the mass editing capabilities that they current work with.
Im using access 2002 currently at work, shortly I will be on 2003. Ive tried to play with the excel add ins that are included with my version, but I havent seen any way to directly link the excel add in to a table in my database, and definately havent found a way to pick and choose information to be manipulated in the cells (via code) in the excel interface.
Id really prefer not to have to have users use excel outside of the database in any form. I am aware that I could probably achieve what I want via importing excel files in the background and what not, but this doesnt achieve the goal that i am after, which is migrating the users out of excel and into access.
I hope I have explained myself thoroughly enough. If anyone has any input on a direction that I should look it would be appreciated. Im not the best with access, however I would consider myself intermediate to expert with coding and whatnot.
Thank you!

We are trying to cut down the # of spreadsheets we have and took a purchase tracking spreadsheet and turned it into access db (2010).
We have 3 sites, and users across network would be 1-2 at max might be in db at same time either recording a purchase, or updating a record on received items.
Can this cause corruption? Is there a way to set users up so it won't?
I know in older versions of Access there were shares that could be set up.

I am trying to update a database table via a command button on the main form, that uses tabbed sub forms.
The database gets its data from paradox data tables copied our company's
third-party software. These table files are copied from one location to another to stop the paradox database from locking up and giving me errors during the import process of this database. I then link to these files at a pre-determined location on a local computer hard drive.
When I try to run the code below I get the error about the table being
locked by a user or process. As you can see I have tried adding a pause
incase the files are still being copied but this does not seem to be the
problem.
I have used a msg box to confirm that the copying process has completed before starting the make query, but the same error comes up after I click ok.
Can anyone suggest anything else.
As you can see from the simplicity of the code below I am a beginner so take it easy on me, by not taking knowledge for granted. :)
code:
------------------------------------------------------------
Dim response
Dim stDocName As String
Dim stLinkCriteria As String
response = MsgBox("Are you sure that you want to update xxx with Customer
data from xxx?", vbYesNo, "Perform Update")
If response = vbYes Then
‘pause software to let any pending work to be completed
Sleep (5000)
‘close active form
DoCmd.Close
‘close all active forms
Do While Forms.Count > 0
DoCmd.Close acForm, Forms(0).Name
Loop
‘pause software to let any pending work to be completed
Sleep (30000)
‘delete existing file
Kill "c:folderfile DATA.DB"
‘replace with new file
FileCopy "J:Folderew_DATA.DB", " c:folderfile DATA.DB "
‘pause software to let any pending work to be completed
Sleep (40000)
DoCmd.SetWarnings False
stDocName = "Make_DATA"
DoCmd.OpenQuery stDocName, acNormal, acEdit
‘pause software to let any pending work to be completed
Sleep (35000)
stDocName = "Make_DATA_SUMMARY"
DoCmd.OpenQuery stDocName, acNormal, acEdit
‘pause software to let any pending work to be completed
Sleep (35000)
stDocName = "qry_Update_ Status"
DoCmd.OpenQuery stDocName, acNormal, acEdit
‘pause software to let any pending work to be completed
Sleep (35000)
‘open up main form when finsihed
stDocName = "main-form"
DoCmd.OpenForm stDocName, , , stLinkCriteria
DoCmd.SetWarnings True
Else

I have a database that has all the employees in my company with basic information. I have a auto number set up for each person. I also have on my form a subform with information about the employee's history in the company. I have bin trying for the last couple weeks, to put a button on my form, that will open up the custom report I made for the one employee, in print preview mode. Everything I have tried gives me a error. The main error I get is The database engine could not lock the table "EmployeeT" because it is already in use by another person or process. If I open the report by itself, then I get all my employees. I am looking to just open a single report from the form I am currently looking at.
I have 2 tables. One Named EmployeeT with all the employees basic information. I have a auto number with the field name EmployeeID. The 2nd table is called IncidentT, which has its own auto number, and records all the problem/incidents with the employee. For example, lates, if the did not show up, or cancelled out of that day, etc. I have the 2 tables sharing the EmployeeID, sharing the relationship. My main form, has a lot of my information and a subform, Like i said. what I try I can get rid of that error.
The only way I got it to work without the error, is when I go into properties and change the Record Set Type to Snapshot on both the form and subform. But then I can't edit the form or subform anymore.

Hello all,
I have a question, I'm building a MS ACCESS database and within it i have a table for putting in my program critical parameters. I don't want anyone to change the content of that table. That means not editing the 1 record in it and not adding a new record. Within the program is't a problem but if you make an other blanc database you can import the table, change it and export it back into the program (i know it is far looking but it happens).
How can i lock a table so it cannot change or it cannot be exported or imported???
