Access Stop From Increasing Size Of A Key Field

Jul 24, 2013

Access stops me from increasing the size of a key field

Table tTrades
. Key field: idTrade: auto-number
. Field: Code: Text 10 characters

Table tData
. Key field: Code: Text 10 characters

I get an error message when I try to change either of these Code fields from size 10 to 16 characters

Error message - you cannot change the data type of field size. It is part of one or more relationships. Te change the data type of this field, first delete its relationships in the relationships window.

I deleted all relationships in the relationships window. But I still get the same error message.

If I click on relationship window > "All realtionships", Access reproduces all my relationships in the relationship window. Somehow it knows them. I deleted them all again and saved. But I still get the same error message.

I have a form ftTrades which generates automatically when I click on table tTrade and create a form.

I deleted this form ftTrades. But I still get the same error message.

How I can increase the size of this field.

Database Size Increasing Too Much

Aug 22, 2006

Hi,

I have created two databases to try and speed up some data manipulation. One database is acting a a 'sniffer' and runs make table, delete, append and normal view queries. the append and make table queries will either write to the other database (the receiving database) or to itself. I have therefore managed to reduce a run time for these queries from 10 minutes for all queries, to less than 1 minute (as previously all in one database using forms).

The problem is these databses contain only about 10 tables to which I am adding data (non of them contain more than 5000 records at the moment) and I also have approx 50 ODBC linked tables (about 30 MB worth so I can retrieve data i want to write to the tables).

The databse has run through my 10 queries about 50 times (each time pasting new info to my receiving tables - still no more than 5000 records) however both database have increaed from a few MB to over 900MB - Is there any way I can stop this from happening as this seems to be a rediculous increase in size - i am also having huge problems compacting the databases.

thanks

Database Heavily Increasing In Size Over Short Space Of Time

Dec 5, 2007

Hi all

I have a database I built for my employers that is accessed by up to as many as 50 users at one time. It is a relational database. I did a compact and repair this morning which changed the BE from 215MB to 45MB. I went to lunch and came back and the database is now 58MB. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it has increased by 13MB within an hour? There is no way this is caused by geniune data records.

Thanks

General :: Increasing File Sizes In Access Database?

May 1, 2013

I have an Access Database of around 8MB. However, after a day's use, this file size increases to around 110MB. If I run a Compact and Repair, the file returns to it's usual size. The first time I noticed this, the file had reached a size of 2GB which is a bit alarming. The file does get used but only appending around 50 records a day and making some amendments. What could be causing this increase?

Forms :: Stop Access From Creating New Record When Inputting Data In Field Or Tab

Dec 17, 2013

How do you prevent access from adding a new record when u input data in the current record or tab to the next field? My database is set up to open with a form where the user picks his name and then a week ending date once that is complete u open a new form where the name and date auto populate along with other fields to fill out such as job charge, charge type , times charged for each day of the week. But I don't want access to create a new record everytime the person inputs or tabs..... .

I have attached my database for better clarity!

Large Field Size = Larger Overall Database Size?

Aug 29, 2005

Will keeping your field size shorter result in a smaller MDB file?

Or does Access only use as much space as there is real data in its fields.

Way back in the dBASE III days, dBASE would pad all your "real" information with as many spaces as necessary to fill up your field. I suspect that the MDB structure is probably smarter than that.

Another question on the same topic - I believe there is a maximum number of characters in a record (4000?). Can your field sizes add up to more than 4000, as long as the actual data, all combined, never totals 4000...?
Thanks............

Increasing Timeouts With ADO

Oct 25, 2007

I have a program that I’m attempting to get counts using ADO. The code is below.

Global Const ConnString = "ODBC;UID=user;PWD=passwd;DSN=ORA"

Dim OraD As ADODB.Connection
Dim rsPreSample As ADODB.Recordset

Set OraD = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
OraD.CommandTimeout = 0
OraD.Open ConnString

sql = "select count (recip) from recipfile where recip >= ‘111111111’

Set rsPreSample = New ADODB.Recordset
rsPreSample.Open sql, ConnString

ADO has a default timeout of 30 seconds. I want to set it to 180 seconds, but the timeout keeps getting ignored. Can someone help me get a new timeout to execute?

How To Stop A Form From Closing After Validating A Field

Jun 12, 2006

Hi,
I've got a close button on my form as follows:
Private Sub exitForm_Click()
DoCmd.Close
End Sub

In the beforeupdate event of the form I have have following code to validate the forms fields:

Private Sub Form_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)
'Place an asterisk (*) in the Tag Property of the text boxes you wish to validate.
'Then in the BeforeUpdate Event of the form, copy/paste the following:

Dim msg As String, Style As Integer, Title As String
Dim nl As String, ctl As Control

nl = vbNewLine & vbNewLine

For Each ctl In Me.Controls
If ctl.ControlType = acTextBox Then
If ctl.Tag = "*" And Trim(ctl & "") = "" Then
msg = "Data Required for '" & ctl.Name & "' field!" & nl & _
"You can't save this record until this data is provided!" & nl & _
"Enter the data and try again . . . "
Style = vbCritical + vbOKOnly
Title = "Required Data..."
MsgBox msg, Style, Title
ctl.SetFocus
Cancel = True
Exit For
End If
End If
Next
End Sub

This validation works fine up to a point. If I try to close the form and a required field is empty, I get a message box asking me to fill in the data. The problem is that when I click ok to the message, it shuts down the form, so I have to re-enter all the data again. My question is how do I prevent the form from closing after clicking ok on the message box?

appreciate your help:)

Increasing Auto Number Value

Jun 4, 2007

I'm making an access database and I'm using the auto number data type for the ID field. But is there a way of increasing the value of the auto number without adding and deleing records over and over again? Basically the database is replacing an excel document that is currently being used. There are already over 5000 entries in the excel document and the access database needs to carry on from the last record in the excel form. Importing the excel data isn't possible, so how would I increase the auto number value?

Modules & VBA :: Do Until Causes Access To Stop Responding

Dec 24, 2013

I'm using the following code:

Code:
Private Sub Form_Timer()
Dim LocalTime, StartWindow, EndWindow As Date
LocalTime = Format(TimeValue(Now()), "hh:mm")
StartWindow = #11:46:00 AM#
EndWindow = #11:48:00 AM#
Dim Response

[Code] ....

The intent is to run automated back end maintenance activities while giving the user the option to delay it if they're in the middle of something.

My logic is as follows:

If it's between these two times, ask the user if the maintenance can run.
If user says yes, run maintenance.
If user says no shift the two times to the right and ask again in a few minutes.

As it is written, when I chose no I get an hourglass icon and if I try to do anything else Windows tells me Access isn't responding. I'm guessing that Access is hanging since I've initiated the Do Until and then stalled it by telling it to wait 3 minutes before it goes to the next step. I suspect that if I waited it out, when the new Startwindow hit I would be asked about running the maintenance again.

My issue is that I need the database to remain responsive to whatever the user needs to do while I wait to ask about running maintenance again. Therefore, I don't think Do Until is my answer - at least not the way I've implemented it.

The will ultimately be set on a 10 minute timer interval and start/end window will be 01:00 and 01:15 AM respectively. The times you see above are there for testing so I can see what happens.

Modules & VBA :: ASCII And Sendkeys - Put Full Stop In The Field

Jan 15, 2015

I have a Combo box which contains a set of numbers divided by "."

e.g.: 1.342567.24433

When looking for a certain code, I would like to use the number pad to enter the first few e.g. 1.34 to move to the Position. In Previous Versions of Access I had a function on the key

If KeyAscii = 44 Then
DoCmd.CancelEvent 'stop the comma keypress being updated
SendKeys ".", True 'put a full stop in the field
End If

This worked fine, but in Access 7 and up, it turns off the number lock.

Is there an alternative to sendkeys to achieve the above or a way of directly turning the number lock on again?

General :: Stop Access Warning Message

Feb 14, 2013

I have an Access 2010 db on a shared network drive. All users accessing the db are running Windows 7 OS and have a licensed corporate version of Access 2010. The advanced options "Shared", "Edited record" and "Open dabases by using record-level locking" are turned on. Additionally, the locking time limits are set to their default levels. If a user selects the save icon after making additions or updates, the following waring message appears:

Costar Job Database can't save design changes or save to a new database object because another user has the file open. To save you design changes or to save to a new object, you must have exclusive access to the file.Since I developed the db, I am the only one that makes design or object changes. I know that users don't need to select the save icon to update the db, but I don't want them to "freak out" if they select save and see the message.
Is there any way to prevent the message from being displayed?

Stop Access From Changing Data Importing Through VB6

Sep 11, 2011

I have an Access 2000 database in which i am importing some data programmatically through VB6. However for some reason Access is changing the data that i am sending it (i know it's access doing it as a manual import does the same thing)

Example data (dashes signify different columns 4 total)

8/31/11 - 08:30:45 - 1 - 003

this gets changed by access to

8/31/11 - 8:30:45 AM - 1 - 3

Note it changed the time to am/pm format and my 003 became 3 . I have all the database fields set as TEXT and not numbers / date & time so I would think that it would treat the data literally however that is not the case and my data gets messed up.

How do i tell access to stop messing with the data and treat it literally and not change anything ?

Tables :: Why Auto-number Is Not Incrementally Increasing

Jul 20, 2014

Using Access 2007..I have a table where the RecordID is an autonumber, and PK.To set this table up I have a load routine, (becuase I have done this multiple times for testing and further deveopment and I compact and repair the DB prior to loading) - the 690 records are correct numerically and autonumbered.This table has transactional data where existing records are updated and new records are appended.

I found the autonumber was not incrementally increasing - so no reseed the auto number (using ALTER TABLE 3IWSPLans ALTER COLUMN RecordID COUNTER (1000,1)) prior to starting the transactions.

New transactions will append correctly, up untill I amend a existing record (using a delete and append query via a staging table) - then the autonumber tries to reuse a number already in the table and because its not unique it errors.why the auto-number is not incrementally increasing correctly

Field Size

Jan 21, 2005

I've done some searches on this, and wasn't able to find an answer--just a hint that this isn't possible. So, I'm asking to be sure.

I know there is a limit to field size at 255--but is there ANY way around that?? I'm transferring a file where some fields have a lot of information, usually not more than 255, but what's there HAS to be there.

If there's no way around it, I'll just have to make an overflow field and move them manually. There have been too many changes made to the table already to start from scratch.

Can I just state... for the record.. that 255 is a stupid limit. It's stupid to HAVE a limit.. it's like Gates saying that we'll never need more then 24 or 500k or whatever the number was.

Thanks,
Siena

When the linked table gets added, the navigation pane gets displayed. I have set it to do not display in the settings and it does not when it opens but when this code runs it opens and then stays open until the db is closed and reopened.

I am trying to use my db as a software and I really do not want this to show.

I have also noticed this in a database I have which has update queries and was fine in access 2000 but does what i described above when using in access 2010.
