I have a table with more than 700,000 records. There are no unique fields or unique combination of fields. I would like to add an AutoNumber field but when I try I get the message:
File sharing lock count exceeded. Increase MaxLocksPerFile registry entry.
If I answer yes I get an error that the new field was not added. Is there any way to add a key foield to an existing database?
I have a simple database that I inherited, that contains basic customer contact info. We want to start adding more functionality to the database, so I've done alot of research to learn about how to begin normalizing my data.The existing table does not contain a useful primary key, since we may have multiple individuals from the same company, companies with very similar names, etc.
I would like to add an AutoNumbered field to use as a CustomerID/primary key, but I can't seem to find a way to do so. Here is what I've tried so far:
I have tried to add a field to the table, and make it an AutoNumber data type. When I do so, I can error message saying that I cannot make a field AutoNumber if any other field in the table already has data entered in it.I have tried to create a new table containing only an AutoNumber PrimaryID field, and then import data from the existing table, but that just creates a 3rd table.

I would like to add a field[dol] to an existing table[rei]. I need this new field[rei].[dol] to be populated with existing data from another table[main] based on the associated field[main].[account1] or [main].[account2] or [main].[account3].

In the [main] table. There is always data in [dol]. But there is NOT always data in the [account] fields. Sometimes there is multiple account numbers per [dol] but not always.
Customers will ALWAYS have at least 1 [account] number and [dol]. Some will have multiple [account] numbers and [dol]. Sometimes these [account] numbers are the same in multiple fields[account1] [account2] [account3].I just need to do a lookup or something to find the [account#] and pull in its [dol] from the [main] table and populate it in [rei].[dol].
I have a daily report that shows data from previous day for production. When we have new products produced, I would like a field to be highlighted if it is the first time it has come up. I do not want it a unique field just from yesterday, but to analyze the table of all of the production days and highlight if a particular field from a column is unique. Can this be done?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an existing contact information database which consists of a number of tables, the main table has a primary key which is currently set to NUMBER.
There is a relationship between it and 2 other tables via that key (ContactID).
I would now like to change the primary key (ContactID) to AUTONUMBER, so that any new records added, have a number assigned automatically. I also need any newly created primary key number to be used in the child tables created as a result.
Is this possible ? (without renumbering my existing tables/records)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a form (frmCompany) which has two combo boxes (cmbCompany and cmbCity) which is used to add field data into a table (tblCompany). The Company field is the only required field the other is optional.
In some cases I may wish to add a City, at a later date, to an existing Company using frmCompany. I now select the company from the cmbCompany combo box then add the city to cmbCity. The problem is that when I close the form I get two companies in the table with same name, one has a city and one does not.
How can I add a new City to an existing Company, using the form, without adding a new Company?

I'm trying to write a query that will validate a field in an existing table. I want the query to show where any of the 412,000 records fail this strict validation:
AAnnnnnnA
...where A is any letter A-Z and n is a digit 0-9
Clearly I can use the LEN function to check for invalid lengths (anything <>9), but I'm looking for a simple neat expression I can use that will check the format. Does an existing function already exist before I resort to writing my own function in VBA (again)?
I'm trying to add a combo box field to an existing table and form. I added the new field to my existing table and set it up as an combo box added my row sources. Then added the new field to an existing form and now am getting a error stating "The record source "Table name and added field here" specified on this form or report does not exist. When I just make the new field a text box instead of combo box it works just fine.

I am trying a to build a slot booking database in which users will be able to book slots (ranging from 1-30) on a particular day for a specific site (location).
When trying to build the relationship between slot in tbl_available and slot in tbl_appointment i get the following error "No unique index found for the referenced field of the primary table" the same error pops up when trying to build a relationship between site in tbl_available and site in tbl_appointment.
I need both relationships to be 1 to many.
Access 2010..One organization that we work with provides us with a block of numbers for each of the two types of contract products we order from them; we do order non-contract stuff from them also.The block of numbers are the same (i.e. 20000 to 30000 this year) for each of the two products. This means that each product can have the number 20000, for example. We call this the Tracking Number. If it is one of these products, we need to select the Contract Number.
For all other one off orders we have with them, we assign our own Tracking Number starting with 00001. This Tracking Number cannot duplicate unless it is one of the aforementioned two products.Both the Tracking Number and Contract Number are in the same table. The user selects the Contract Number from a form (connected to the Contract Number table that has all the details on the contract) and the Contract Number is populated in the same table that has the Tracking Number.Each order must have a Tracking Number (no null)..Not all orders need a Contract Number (null okay).The Tracking Number and Contract Number combination cannot duplicate.I tried setting the primary keys to more than one field in the table, but they cannot have null values.
If not... I have been working on Plan B.... an AfterUpdate on the form (either the form or a field... don't know yet) that looks at a query that only has results if there are duplicate values.
I am trying to create a one-to-many relationship between these two tables. I want to be able to access the 3 fields on the [Processors] table within reports based on [AllItems]. [AllItems] is a listing of account activity where the [AccountNumber] repeats. I have every field set as the "Primary Key" on [AllItems] as that is the only way to avoid importing duplicate data. I have two datasets that I am using. They start off with similar information: sitename, siteprovince, sitecoordinates. They also have 5 more fields that have the same type of information. After that there are about 10 more fields with no overlap.
In the original dBase program they came from they were treated as one dataset.
The current structure I am using is Company, CompanyContact, Transaction, SiteDetails (the dataset I am asking about).
Is it better design to breakup the SiteDetails into SiteTypeA and SiteTypeB? I have everything working in one table, but I thought it might be more effecient to have two.
I am trying to change a field lenght of a large database (access 97) It is at 50 right now and want to change it to 25. When I try to change it and save the table I get a error when the bar is about 3/4 the way accross the bottom.
Microsoft can't change the data type - there isn't enough disk space or memory.

This is error 3183. In the help it says that the TEMP DOS enviroment variable location doesn't have enough space. (summerising). Now I have a 100+gb drive that isn't close to being full. I also changed the MaxLocksPerFile registry dword to 8,000,000 as my table has around over 3 million records. I have tried this on a xp and 2000 machine same results. Next I am going to try it on a 98 machine. I could do it by breaking up the table into 2 differnt ones and do each one individually but there is an autonumber field used as a reference number (I know I know). So that would screw up the numbering scheem (Yes I know there are ways arund that also). this database is about 400MB
Couple of questions
1. Is there a way around this? I have not found a solution on line yet.
2. Will lowering the field length make the database smaller (the data that is in there now is less than 25 charecters and the field is set to 50.) I have gotten mixed info on this. there are a few fields I would like to reduce.

I have a table that contains a list of news items. For each item there is a link to an appropriate image and a load of text.
I display a list menu of news items showing the picture and the first few lines of text. At the moment for the first few lines of text I have a separate field and just copy and paste the first few lines of the main article into it.
My question is is there a way where instead of having to have a separate field with just the first few lines in I can somehow just retrieve the first few lines of data from the full article field when displaying the menu listing?
Hope this makes sense, and any ideas greatly appreciated.

I have a data where I want to create a query fulfilling the below conditions. Suppose I have two table: Table 1 and Table 2 If a value ex.98 (Table1) matches with the value with 98(Table 2),it should pick up my second higher value 103. suppose 103 is the next high value of 98 . I have a table with 140 fields (I know, this is too many). I have a date field that intermittently will not allow data to be entered. There is a pattern to the data it will not accept, but it seems to only occur in certain records and what it will or will not allow seems different in each case. The error I get when I try to save a record is: The search key was not found in any record. I've isolated the error to the level of the table. Have tried compact/repair, removing the index on the field, deleting and recreating the field. Nothing works. Help! :confused:

To avoid the mind-numbing tedium of have to use make-table queries loads of times, is there a quick (probably VBA-related) way to split a large Access table, of about 350000 records, down into 93 smaller tables, based on a key code field that identifies each group of records e.g. GBW102, GBE999, etc?
Any help much appreciated.

I currently have 8 tables in my Database.
How can i extract all the information in those tables and put all the data into one large table? I want to extract everything apart from one table?
and can I format the large table once the data have been put in i.e. insert new Columns at the start, and populate fields based on the value of other fields values?

This really isn't a large table by Access standards, as it has only about 1 million records, but nevertheless it's taking a long time to run the update query. Here's the query:
UPDATE [Db] INNER JOIN [Small Table] ON [Large Table].text1=[Small Table].[text1] SET [Large Table].[text2] = [Small Table].[text2];
[Large Table] has about 1 million records and [Small Table] has 10 records.
