Adding Columns To Existing Access 2003 Table

Jun 3, 2005

Hi,
I am fairly new to doing DBA, and I am having trouble adding a new column to a table that is existing. Is there any simple way to do this or does it have to be done throught code? And if so how.
Thanks

Opening An Existing Project In Access 2003

Aug 14, 2007

Hopefully this is pretty simple.

Have an existing app. When I open it from within Access the app seems to go into some runtime mode ... shows a splash screen, menus, etc.

Okay how do I go into design mode so I can modify it ?

Yeap am a complete newbie with Access and haven't touch since the Office 97 version :o:eek:

Not sure if you are meant to ask multi questions in one thread, or create a thread for each one. Will created a new thread for my other question, so if one of the Mods could point out the correct way of doing this would be appreciated.

Adding New Data To Existing Table

Mar 27, 2007

Please bear with me, first post, trying to get to grips with Access for work!

We (a primary school) had a "bespoke" database set up using MS Access by someone who has long left the area and now we need to make changes and I, as the most computer literate person on site, have been volunteered to make these changes.

My level is beginner (for now) and my first job is to add some new options to a "Titles" table, four columns, six records. Column1 = ID#, Column2 = Male Titles, Column3 = Female Titles, whilst Column4 seems to hold items from Columns 2 & 3.

If I add a futher option, I get the error "Can't perform cascading operation: Entry must be one of the Titles as featured in the drop-down box or in the Titles table.

Now, as far as I can tell, I HAVE added the new option to the Titles table, and they DO show in the drop down box in the main spreadsheet display, BUT the error comes back as soon as I try to confirm the new title.

Any ideas please?

Tables :: Adding Records To Existing Table

May 19, 2014

What I have is a database that I have done some tweaking on and in the meantime the original db has been in use which has added around 200 or so more records in the table.

What I would like to do is to just update the db that I have been working on with the older db table(the one who has the additional 200 records).

EX. DB A(Old DB, Newer Table) DB B(New DB, Older Table)

I want to put DB A table into DB B

Is this a simple fix? Or do I need to write some sort of query to update the records in the old table? I've tried to export the excel file and then import but it puts it in unrelated objects and then my switchboard or nothing works.

Tables :: Adding Many To Many Relationships To Existing Table

Sep 13, 2012

I have 3 tables

tblProductInfo
- ProductID
- ProductItemNumber
- JDEDescription

tblFacility
- FacilityID
- FacilityDescription

tblProductFacilityMM
- ProductToFacilityID
- ProductIDFK (combined with FacilityIDFK to make a PK)
- FacilityIDFK

As I'm writing this out, I am realizing that tlbProductFacilityMM.producttoFacilityID is probably not necessary, but that I don't expect that to have much significance to the issue. So I've setup a query between the two tables:

Code:
SELECT tblProductInfo.ProductID, tblProductInfo.ItemNumber, tblProductInfo.JDEDescription, tblProductFacilityMM.FacilityIDFK, tblFacility.FacilityDescription
FROM tblFacility INNER JOIN (tblProductInfo INNER JOIN tblProductFacilityMM ON tblProductInfo.ProductID = tblProductFacilityMM.ProductIDFK) ON tblFacility.FacilityID = tblProductFacilityMM.FacilityIDFK;

And used it to create my subform which is simply a drop down box for tblProductFacilityMM.FacilityIDFK. My main form is one that has already been in use for 6 months or so, it is based off the tblproductinfo table and needs to have the option to select multiple Facilities for each ProductID. I inserted the subform, but when I try to select a facility I get an error that reads:

Quote: Cannot Join Records; Join key of tblProductFacilityMM not in recordset.

Adding AutoNumber As Primary ID To Existing Table

Jan 31, 2012

I have a simple database that I inherited, that contains basic customer contact info. We want to start adding more functionality to the database, so I've done alot of research to learn about how to begin normalizing my data. The existing table does not contain a useful primary key, since we may have multiple individuals from the same company, companies with very similar names, etc.

I would like to add an AutoNumbered field to use as a CustomerID/primary key, but I can't seem to find a way to do so. Here is what I've tried so far:

I have tried to add a field to the table, and make it an AutoNumber data type. When I do so, I can error message saying that I cannot make a field AutoNumber if any other field in the table already has data entered in it.I have tried to create a new table containing only an AutoNumber PrimaryID field, and then import data from the existing table, but that just creates a 3rd table.

Adding A Prefix To Existing Description In Project Table

Apr 17, 2012

How to add a prefix to an existing description in a project table, generated from the project number. Here's a sample of my data:

PROJECT NUMBER DESCRIPTION
01200000 Completed Projects
01601530 Steele Sub

I would like the Descriptions to read:
01200000 MO-20 Completed Projects
01601530 MO-60 Steele Sub

The state, "MO," comes from the first two digits "01" and the coop, "60," comes from the second two digits. I have a table of a thousand or so projects in an Access database that I need to amend the descriptions of to include these prefixes. Is there a simple way to do this in Access or in Excel without writing code?

Adding New Field To Existing Table And Form - Getting Error

Jun 8, 2014

I'm trying to add a combo box field to an existing table and form. I added the new field to my existing table and set it up as an combo box added my row sources. Then added the new field to an existing form and now am getting a error stating "The record source "Table name and added field here" specified on this form or report does not exist. When I just make the new field a text box instead of combo box it works just fine.

Access 2003 Database - Adding A Field?

May 31, 2006

Hi

I'm adding to a database that someone else set up. I went to the Design View page and clicked on one of the buttons at the bottom to add a text box etc etc. It all looks fine, but the field doesn't seem to be active - if I add some text into it for one page of the databse, the same text appears on every page of the databse. I notice that my "new field" is not listed in the fields list. How do I add it? I keep looking through "The Missing Manual" but without spending 3 days reading the whole thing (which I don't have time for) and learning much much more than I need to know just to get to the part that I need to know, it isn't helping me much.

Please can anyone enlighten me? My email is stu_paranormal@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks!

Adding Pictures To Forms And Reports (Access 2000 Vs 2003)

Apr 8, 2006

I have successfully used the recommended way to display images from a folder in a form as posted on the microsoft website.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/210100/

These instructions were for Access 2000. I noticed that there are seperate instructions for doing this using Access 2003.:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285820/

My questions are:
1. If multiple users access this database using different versions of Access (2000 and 2003) will it not work for some?
2. do i have to modify code if i update to 2003?

Thanks for youir feedback!

Adding Fields To A Query That Aren't In The Tables (Access 2003)

Jul 15, 2007

Hi,

My database has 4 tables. Table 1 is assembly line 1 data. Table 2 is the sizes for assembly line 1. Table 3 is assembly line 3 data. Table 4 is the sizes for assembly line 2.

The table data comes from another program - they are reimported regularly and so I cannot change, add or delete fields from these 4 tables.

I have to change tables 2 and 4 to crosstab queries and then create 2 queries that join 1+2, 3+4. That's easy enough, no problem.

But then I have to UNION queries 1+2. While 95% of the fields are the same, the most crucial are not - the sizes. Assembly line 1 has 5 less sizes than assembly line 2. I need ALL of the sizes to show in the combined query.

I need to add these 5 fields without adding them to the tables. I did manage to create a crosstab query that included the missing sizes, but now I have a 1 in those fields where I need a NULL or Zero value.

Does that make sense? Can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance.

Adding Lookup Columns To A Table

Sep 21, 2015

In the tutorial listed here: [URL]....

It states after opening the database in Datasheet view :

In the Navigation pane, double-click the table in which you want to create the lookup column - this opens the table in datasheet view.

On the Datasheet tab, in the Fields & Columns group, click the lookup column.

And it show you some icons.

Tables :: Adding Same Prefix To All Columns In A Table

Jan 23, 2013

My database has three tables with many columns. The three tables are identical in the names of their columns.

I want to copy all columns from all three tables together into one single table, giving the respective columns prefix table1-, table2-, table3- since the columns would otherwise be indistinguishable.

I already tried to search the board for "table columns add prefix".

I use Access 2010

I managed to copy all columns together into one table through design-view, but cannot figure out the "add prefix" step.

Nov 4, 2004

Ive been converting .xls files to Access database files. I would like to use ACCESS to develop the Reports but the client wants the Reports to look like those in EXCEL..eg. where you have lines between rows and columns. If I could give my Access Reports the same look and feel, I could wean these guys off of Excel and into the wonderful world of relational models.

Does anyone have sqlcode or tricks I might use to create the Excel 'look alike' report in Access?

thks in advance...and I will sum.

Format Existing Columns Of Data

Sep 18, 2007

I have an old table that has many, many records. One of the columns lists the Date of Birth. Here's my problem:

Users have entered data into this column as "71462" This representing July 14, 1962. Is there a way to automatically format all data in this column so that it is more palatable - e.g. 07/14/1962?

Changing the column Data Type to "Short Date" in Design View would delete all existing data in that column, so this is not an option.

Thanks for your help.

Can Map Certain Fields On New Access Table To Existing Access Table

May 14, 2013

I've imported an Excel file into Access as a textfile. All of the information on the Excel spreadsheet was successfully imported in Access. The only problem that I have is that some of the fields on the table have quotation marks (e.g. "Stults, David, "KWK, Inc.", "7,860.27", etc.) My first question is whether these quotation marks can be removed from the table.

My second question - There is information on this table that needs to be manually entered on a data entry screen in Access. Is there anyway to automate this process?

Table Problems Moving From Access 2003 -> Access 2007

Jun 19, 2007

Attached is a screenshot of the relationships in a database I built a couple of years ago. It's worked absolutely fine in Access 2003 and currently has over 18,000 customers with associated information in it.

However, when I open the database in Access 2007 the performance is awful. All the forms are very slow to respond when tabbing between form elements. I've experimented by reducing the number of form elements calling on related data on a given page and whilst this improves performance it reduces usability - something I don't want to compromise on especially since Access 2007 should be able to cope with this.

My next question is therefore whether I've got the most efficient underlying table design and I can't see any other way of doing it than my current method so I'd be grateful for any feedback or advice anyone has.
