Automatic Linking Of Back End - Possible?

Dynamically Linking Front End & Back End
Jun 1, 2005I had posted this in another area but didn't receive a response and my whole project has ground to a halt until I sort this out :(
I have made a database with front and back ends. Now I wish to be able to use the front end over the Internet but the IP address of the back end keeps changing weekly because of my ISP.
Now I have made a splash screen at the start of the program which asks for the IP address and when this is entered the front end links to the back end - but I can't get the code right for this
The code I have at the moment is embarrasingly wrong so I'm not putting it up here
The code I have at the moment has a box that asks for user to enter the IP address - I need it to use the IP address to enter the database at ip//data.mdb

Linking Back-end RWOP Queries

I know there are posts on forums all over the internet on this topic, but it is just one aspect in particular that I would like some simple advice on. I have worked through user-level security suggestions online and made a test back-end database that has a user and a group, named "Developer." All of the privelleges are activated for Developer. Developer is the only user who can access the data of "Table1." I've created an RWOP query that retrieves the data from Table1, Developer is the owner of this query. I've also created a front end and tried to create a link to Table1; which is denied, as I had hoped it would be. My question is this: How should I structure my front-end so that users can retrieve data from this query, but cannot obtain the data using a different front-end?

Tables :: Linking To CSV Files In Back End
Aug 18, 2013I am developing a 2010 database which is split. In the back end I am linking to csv files - with a new file every month to link to.
What I would like to do (and have not been able to find a way to do at all so far! ) is each month to add the new table link in the _be and to be able to choose it in the front end user interface to view reports on, without having to "re-programme" the underlying queries to use the new linked table.

Nov 5, 2013Have a database with a back end that I have been working on. The database resides on a USB at the moment. I was ready to deploy and now when I try to re-link the back end tables, I repeatedly have the following error: "Your network was interrupted. To continue, close the database, and then open it again."
At first I thought this was something to do with the network, as I was moving it to a shared network drive. However, I can recreate the same issue using someone else's computer and using my USB (although it's mapped to a different drive letter). I've tried a few things, including recreating the back end by importing only the table structure, but still no luck.
Modules & VBA :: Linking Back End Database With Password?
Apr 28, 2014I have a Back end (with password) which resides in a netdrive while the front end is installed in each individual users desktop, the problem is, some of the users netdrive was mapped in a different way (different letters..some are J others are G). I'm looking for code that I can relink the database to the front end in runtime, I did try to look in the net but I can't find anything that I can put the password as parameter.
this sample code from Dev is good, but i got an error because the database requires a password.where i can put the password?

Back End Database Linking And Drive Mapping
Feb 25, 2013I have built a Database links to multiple back end databases. The whole database is completed, and I have to share it across the company, so I have placed the Database and all of the Back End databases on a "public" shared drive. I have the "public" drive stored as my Q drive. So when I link to the back end databases, the path it stores is Q:DatabasesDatabase.accdb
However, the problem is that not everyone will have the "public" drive mapped to Q. It's possible they could have it mapped to P or A or whatever. So if someone has their "public" drive mapped to P, this database will not work (since Q:DatabasesDatabase.accdb would not exist for them - it's really P:DatabasesDatabase.accdb).
Is there a way around this? So that instead of it mapping to the relative letter (Q or P), can it just refer to "public"?
General :: Added Table To Back End Not Linking Up To Front End
Jun 22, 2012I did a search in here as well as Google to figure out why when I relinked the front end to the back end after adding 2 tables to the back end that the tables did NOT show up on the front end. Only the original tables that I began with.From what I have read there are different ways to do it. One suggestion on here was to create the table on the front end and export it to the back end. I guess I will have to do this going forward.
But my question is, after searching pages upon pages with no luck, since I already have the tables in the back end how do I tell the front end to find them and link them?
General :: Split Database - Prevent Linking To Back End
Jun 25, 2015I have a split database. I have secured the mde sufficiently but I need to secure the back end so that no one could link to tables in it. If I introduce a password to the back end is this going to require those using front end to supply the password? If not then this could be good solution.
As the database is on the network drive, is there any other way to prevent people to link to the db? Can I hide the db in the network drive? Or should I hide tables in the BE. Should these still be available to be linked?
General :: Linking Front End With Multiple Back Ends
Sep 30, 2014My question encompasses a front end connected to multiple back ends. It is probably a mundane point, but reading a few articles didn't seem to touch on it.
By this, let me toss out that I am thinking of the personnel where I work when I say 95% have a hard time using email and MS Word, let alone mundane functions like find a file, etc. As such, I have to make my front-ends extremely user friendly.
With that in mind, when developers have multiple back ends, what are thoughts about the best way to relink when required? Even when there are 'more sophisticated' users? Security not an issue or is an issue (inasmuch as can be handled in access)?
Ex: Large corporation with a multitude of user ability. Large database with say 3 different back ends.
I was thinking about keeping a front-end table with each table name and UNC path, hard coding paths to corresponding table names, etc.
Personally I don't have a need for multiple back-ends, but the question came up while reading.
Getting Non-Automatic ID To Become Automatic
Jun 11, 2013I am in the process of development of a database and one of the functionality that I would like to achieve is a custom ID to become automatic on my 'ADD-CUSTOMER' form (e.g. CID0001 - CID0002) so on an so forth. From my research all I can see in access 2010 is a autonumber which cannot be altered (or at least i don't know how).

Automatic Splitter!
Jul 28, 2005I am tying to create a setup application in access. The setup forms are incorporated in the database application.It has to split my database into a FE and BE so that the corresponding files can be placed in thier corresponding files folders automatically.
Iam doing this because the database has to be exported to a number of remote locations every after two weeks.
Apart from using the Database Splitter, Could there be any Ideas on how i can split and link my database through code.
Automatic AutoNumbering
Oct 2, 2005I am using DMax function for my custom autonumber
I just realized that when using this in a multi user environment, I am getting duplications.
This field is not the primary key, and I am using this as a group ID and cannot set it to “no duplications”
My form also has a sub form, and when entering the sub form, the main record gets saved automatically.
First I added the following procedure

However, I then realized the after insert function will add the new autonumber to the form. However, it will not saved it to the table until the main record is saved again (which may not happen)
“DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdSaveRecord” doesn’t seems to be working after the “Form_AfterInsert”
Now I moved the code to the “Form_BeforeUpdate” (still testing)
Does anyone have any experience on this problem?

Aug 9, 2007Our small newspaper needs to create a database of subscribers from which we can print labels in what the post office calls "Walk Sort" order, the order in which the mail carrier hand delivers the mail on his route. The number associated with a particular subscriber is not fixed because if another subscriber is added on that mail carriers route, it may fall between two existing entries. So the Walk Sort field needs to automatically renumber up or down when an entry is added or deleted. I will use that field to sort chronologically and print form feed labels.
I've figured out a way to do this in Excel, but I think Access might be a better program to use for this database. My question is, can Access automatically renumber a Walk Sort field if I add or remove entries? If so, how do I set it up to do that?
P.S. I haven't used Access for quite some time, and I wasn't very proficient with it then. :o

I have many front end's (using ACCESS 2007 runtime version) in different terminals. Suppose that from 'terminalA', I am assigning a task to an employee who's using 'terminalB'. The user is already looged on to the program by this time, so I want that 'task' to appear on his terminal without him having to press the 'Refresh' button (that I placed on the form) every time I give him a new task when he's logged on so he could see it. How would I do this?

i need to run a specific qry that runs from 5th to 5th of every month to show payments made between the dates. i dont want to fill anything in as these dates are set. can a qry be made to run and retrive the info between 5th of last month & 5th of current month automatically ( by the press of a button ) every month?

Automatic Lookup

Automatic Dates
Dec 4, 2006I am building an employee performance report database. Part of this report I need to integrate initial and midterm feedback dates. These dates are as such:
The initial is 30 days after supervision started or annual performance report completed
The midterm is 120 after supervision started or annual performance report completed
I'd like to give the supervisor a set month for their feedback completions as a guidline. If they are a few days prior or after the "30 day or 120 day mark" it is not a big deal, so I am just wanting it to automatically calculate the month rather than a specific day. After a performance report is completed the intial and midterm feilds should automatically update to calculate the new feedback dates for the next year.
The most updated dates need to be available for supervisors to print on a master report on all their subordinates. No need to store older dates (unless the performance report has not been completed yet)

Automatic ID Generation

I have a column which is made up of two parts from the table as follows...
function area .... FINANCE
ID number ... 001, 002, 003 etc
combined together this will make my ID column which should look somehting likie this : FINANCE 001, MARKETING 002 etc
BUT
the problem is that now i need to import some existing data into the tables and it appears as though the existing data has repeating numbers for different function areas
e.g.
FINANCE 001
FINANCE 002
MARKETING 001
MARKETING 002
how would i get this imported into my current table structure?

Jul 1, 2006Please Could any one help out, i have this Database am building for students in a school, The attached WORLD file respresnt a query in the database. The Position in class and Position in level is suppose to grade the student automatically i.e 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th e.t.c. according to the score in a particular subject in their class and in the level.
I dont know how to go about this, am not even sure if this could be done using the query or i should do it using VBA on the report sheet that i generated from the query.
If any one has any idea on how to go about it please let me know it will be highly appreciated.

Automatic Pop Up Reminders

I'm fairly new to Access and databases in general but I have built a great database which I am really pleased with, but I want to be able to have a pop-up reminder which is activated when a date in one of the form fields is reached.
First of all is this technically possible?
If it is could somebody give me an indication of how to go about doing it because I have no idea!
If it is not possible, is there any other way around it?
