Automatically Add Rows To A Table Or Fields To A Query?

Mar 23, 2012

I am using Access 2007. I have an ODBC source feeding data into a table, to which I made a crosstab query that displays the useful data from that source. I need a way to add data(new field), using a form, that is a associated with the lines in the query. I've tried creating another table that uses the sample ID as the primary key, but I need it to automatically create a new row for each query line. Is there a way to do this, or better way to add data to a query. Examples are below.

The ODBC data looks something like this

SampleID PeakName Conc

sample1 THF 50
sample1 MEOH 10
sample1 propanol 25
sample1 butanol 15
sample2 THF 21
sample2 MEOH 15
sample2 propanol 17
sample2 butanol 23

I have the query look like:

SampleID THF MEOH propanol butanol (I need to be able to add a field here)
sample1 50 10 25 15
sample2 21 15 17 23

Linked table I created:

SampleID LIMS #
sample1 1234567
sample2 4567891

The problem is, for this table I have to manually select each sample ID. I want it to automatically add the sample IDs as new ones are querried.

Automatically Filling Linking Fields For New Rows In Related Table?

Dec 18, 2012

OK, so I have a database with four tables (Well, more than that, but these are the relevant ones). It's to be used for recording the results of site inspections.

"Tbl_Typicals" is a list of products. We'll call its key "Typical_ID".
"Tbl_Actions" is a list of tests performed on each product. A given product may have many tests, but each test applies to only one product. Its key is "Action_ID". Each row contains a Typical_ID to link on.
"Tbl_PlantComponents" records which products are installed on which site. Its key is "Component_ID". Each row contains a Typical_ID to link on.

The fourth table ("Tbl_Results") contains the results of each test. As a result of the relationships above, each row is specific to a single Action which applies to a particular PlantComponent, which is to say, each row has both a Component_ID and an Action_ID to link on.

So, what I need is a query that pulls all of these together, such that I can use these details as the line items of a subform.

The main form displays the details of the PlantComponent, which is a simple query to relate line items in Tbl_PlantComponents with the data about that particular product in Tbl_Typicals. So far, so easy.

The subform shows the details of each test applicable to that product. It then has toggle buttons and a comment field to indicate the results of the test, the results of which should be stored as a line item in Tbl_Results.

The "easy" way is to use an append query to generate Tbl_Results in advance. This works, but it raises a variety of new issues.

The nice way would be to use a normal SELECT query and have Access fill in the necessary linking fields (the Action_ID and Component_ID) on each row automatically. Now for trivial examples, this is very easy - my main form query manages just that: I created a link between Tbl_PlantComponents and Tbl_Comments (which stores general comments about each PlantComponent which aren't related to a specific test) based on the Component_ID and that works fine - when I edit the Comments field, the row is automatically created and the linked ID field filled in for me.

However, when I need to do it with 2 links, it all falls apart. I've tried everything I can think of, including generating a single-column unique ID to use for the link, but Access just won't autofill for me. It just makes those fields on the form (or in the datasheet view of the query) non-editable because there's no associated row in Tbl_Results. If I create a matching row in Tbl_Results the query works fine, but that's not the point.

Implementation of the query is non-trivial because it requires two outer joins involving 3 tables - All from Tbl_Actions to matching in Tbl_Results, and All from Tbl_PlantComponents to matching in Tbl_Actions. This necessiates splitting the query into two - the first relates Tbl_PlantComponents, Tbl_Typicals and Tbl_Actions (returning one row for each Action for every Component), and the second performs a single outer join (using an AND) between the first query and Tbl_Results.

Delete Query To Target Fields Not Rows?

Sep 5, 2007

Hi

I need to know if it is possible to create a delete query which will target particular fields in a row based on certain criteria in a seperate combo box(on same table).

The few ways that I have tried to do this have been unsuccesful so if anyone can shed some light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.

Automatically Copy Data From One Field In A Table To Other Related Fields In Other Tables

Aug 7, 2014

I'm trying to create a system where if I enter data into one field it will automatically appear in the corresponding field in another table. For instance if I enter the values 10,12,15 into a field called QID in table A I would like this to appear automatically in a field called QID in table B. Both tables are related and I have enforced referential integrity and 'cascade' options but this still doesn't seem to allow one table to automatically update another. My ultimate aim would be to have a form that you filled in data for the field QID once that then propagated to both Table A and Table B.

How Do I Create A Query To Move 2 Fields On The Same Row To Be 2 Rows In One Field

Jun 6, 2007

Hello,
I have a big table like this:
ID Name Race1 Race2 Race3
-- ---- ----- ----- -----
1 a Asian russian

How do I create a query to be like this (either in query or report)?
I like to combine three fields (race1, race2, race3) in one field (Race), and break any value of races to the 2nd line, 3rd line, if there is a value...
ID Name Race
-- --- ----
1 a Asian
Russian

In Oracle and SQL Server, we can combine a few rows to be columns-like, but in Access, is there any way to do that? and how?

Thanks so much!

Jenny.

Automatically Highlighting Multiple Rows In A Subquery On A Form

Dec 3, 2004

Hello!

I have a form with a subquery on it that shows all of the records that the form is based upon. The subquery and form are linked already, so whatever record I change to on the form, the subquery will follow. The records are chronologically ordered by date in ascending order. Depending on what day the form is on, I want to be able to highlight the rows/records of that particular week automatically in the subquery. I was just wondering what method I can use to do the highlighting/selecting of the records if there is such a thing. Hope I was clear...THANKS! =)

Queries :: Query To Insert Missing Rows From Another Query / Table

Oct 8, 2013

I am using an Access 2010 DB to keep track of a schedule. Essentially, at least one person needs to be signed up to work for every hour of every day in a week.

Tables:
Days with 7 records
Hours with 24 records
Workers with as many people that sign up to work the different hours
Schedule signifying the worker, day, and hour which are signed up.

As of now i have a query that relates these results and gives me a line detailing the worker/time information for the slots that are signed up for. What I'm TRYING to do is to create a query that gives me BLANK worker info when there is no one signed up for a particular hour.Currently my Schedule table has the following:

WorkerID | DayID | HourID
----------+---------+--------
1 | 5 | 12
4 | 5 | 13
16 | 5 | 15

What I'm looking to do is have this table matched up with another table (or query) that provides every combination of day/hour. When an day/hour combination is skipped, the query will be able to "fill in the blank" with a row. Like this:

WorkerID | DayID | HourID
----------+---------+--------
1 | 5 | 12
4 | 5 | 13
| | 14
16 | 5 | 15

Tables :: Possible To Automatically Lookup Data In A Table Without A Query?

A field in a table can be populated by a lookup up but it has to be done manually or with a form.A "new" table can be created with a query that matches the data.

Is it possible to skip these steps and create a field that automatically populates with the data from another table based on other common data?I can do this in Excel but not sure it can be done in Access.

Query: Access Macros, Autodeleting Rows And Updating Table Names

Oct 11, 2007

I'm a bit in over my head. Unfamiliar with Access macros, I need to write a bunch of them for work, and soon. Unixen I can deal with, largely undocumented convoluted Access macros are something else....

My current problem is: I have a table. The first column has a value in it for almost every row. However, there are six other columns after it. I need to write a macro to automatically delete all of the rows that don't have data in the last six columns. Microsoft Help is, as always, of zero use. The FindRecord feature allows me to use expressions to search, but of course, the help fails to tell me what syntax Access uses.

Oh, and it asks me to select a table from the drop-down list. Can I use wildcards here? Is there a way to get it to automatically open the newest table, or will we have to change the macro accordingly each month?

Most tutorials/guides I'm Googling rather brilliantly repeat the same things the help does, AKA, are useless. (Why do they bother writing them if you're not giving new information...?)

I'd ask about the other various access questions I have, but I can pick them up as I go, this is the most pressing question.

Way To Create A Query / Table Where Access Automatically Makes A Due Date?

Is there a way to create a query/table/... where access automatically makes a due date? EG: Joe needs to pay me 100 each month, starting 01/01/2015 until 31/12/2018.

Automatically Fill Fields

Nov 7, 2007

hello all, any help greatly appreciated.....

I have two tables in the same Access 2003 database.

Table1 is called "Clients" and has address type fields, e.g. street_name, postcode, etc. It also has a field called CYPAN_area.

Table 2 is called CYPAN_Postcodes and has two fields; postcodes and the CYPAN area that postcode belongs to.

I want to create a function so that when someone enters the postcode in table1, the database searches Table2 and identifies which CYPAN area that postcode belongs to and automatically populates the "CYPAN_area" field in Table 1.

any tips greatly appreciated

Harry

PS I'm only a novice so I don't know anything about VBA etc, but I understand excel type formula

Automatically Populating Fields/columns

Dec 21, 2005

I have Two tables one table has a Master list of products (ProductMaster) with a Unique product code (ProductMaster.UQ_ID).
The second Table has Order data. The Second table (OrderTable) is where I will enter the product code (UQ_ID) which is the unique Identifier which is also in the ProductMaster. As soon as I enter the Prodt code in the OrderTable I should have all the related fields filled in from the Product Master.

Columns in The ProductMaster = Product_ID, Product_Manucaturer, Product_Weight, Product_Color, Product_Size

Columns in The OrderTable = Product_ID, Product_Manucaturer, Product_Weight, Product_Color, Product_Size, Order_Date, Ordered_By

The columns marked in red are the ones that will have to be automatically fetched from ProductMaster

The data in the second table should be populated from the ProductMaster as soon as I enter the Product_Code. The rest of the details Can be filled manually filled in.

Is it possible to do this with Access. I have tried different expressions in the Fields without much use. The Documentation from Microsoft is very weak. If someone knows a solution or where the documentation is, please help.

Thanks
