Back End Database Linking And Drive Mapping
Feb 25, 2013
I have built a Database links to multiple back end databases. The whole database is completed, and I have to share it across the company, so I have placed the Database and all of the Back End databases on a "public" shared drive. I have the "public" drive stored as my Q drive. So when I link to the back end databases, the path it stores is Q:DatabasesDatabase.accdb
However, the problem is that not everyone will have the "public" drive mapped to Q. It's possible they could have it mapped to P or A or whatever. So if someone has their "public" drive mapped to P, this database will not work (since Q:DatabasesDatabase.accdb would not exist for them - it's really P:DatabasesDatabase.accdb).
Is there a way around this? So that instead of it mapping to the relative letter (Q or P), can it just refer to "public"?

I have a big (reasonably big) Access 2003 db which I have split. On the E: drive this functions perfectly. Years ago I moved it to an other drive and found that to reach the back end again I had to change the drive letter in the link to the tables. Unfortunately I can't remember how I did it - all I remember is that somehow I brought up the link path and could then simply change the drive letter. I now find it necessary to put the db on an external drive for use with different computers. It will probably be easiest to put "." instead of a drive letter in the link, but after trying all menu options for db, tables and macros I still haven't found out how to access the link path.

I have a Back end (with password) which resides in a netdrive while the front end is installed in each individual users desktop, the problem is, some of the users netdrive was mapped in a different way (different letters..some are J others are G). I'm looking for code that I can relink the database to the front end in runtime, I did try to look in the net but I can't find anything that I can put the password as parameter.
this sample code from Dev is good, but i got an error because the database requires a password.where i can put the password?
Code:
Function fRefreshLinks(NewDbName As String) As Boolean
Dim strMsg As String, collTbls As Collection
Dim i As Integer, strDBPath As String, strTbl As String
Dim dbCurr As Database, dbLink As Database
Dim tdfLocal As TableDef
[code].....

I have a split database. I have secured the mde sufficiently but I need to secure the back end so that no one could link to tables in it. If I introduce a password to the back end is this going to require those using front end to supply the password? If not then this could be good solution.
As the database is on the network drive, is there any other way to prevent people to link to the db? Can I hide the db in the network drive? Or should I hide tables in the BE. Should these still be available to be linked?

Does anyone have any experience with placing a multi-user back-end access database on one of these inexpensive "external network hard drives"?
I have a situation where I'd like to share my database with multiple users, but the corporate IM rats have pretty much eliminated all means of allowing us lowly employees of doing that with their network. We have no file server. We do have sharepoint services, but we only have Access 2000, which as far as I know is not capable of exploiting the sharepoint/xml back-end database features. Also, no one in the office here can share a directory on their workstation because they won't grant us administrator priveledges.
So thats how I came upon the idea of buying or creating cheap (<$250 USD) wireless network hard-drive on which to put the back-end. I'm mainly interested in knowing if it will work, and that the performance isn't going to be absolutely pathetic. I'm only looking at having 3 or 4 users at any one time, and the entire database will only house a couple thousand records.

I am attempting to link a table in one database to another database using the server name designation (ie.//2sxfprinff01Group) instead of the mapped network name (ie. G:). I tried relinking using the Access Link Manager. Right click on the linked table. But it does not let you edit the link.
Access 2007 does not allow this and reverts links to the G: drive. There are situations where the the IT department have set the mappings to this shared location as an H: for some of the employees. In those cases, the employee gets an error message telling them that Access cannot locate the G: drive.
An obvious solution is to get the employees remapped to the G: drive. However, one would think that MS would have allowed for mapping to the designated location and not an alias.

My workaround was to temporarily map the URL to a vacant drive letter on the local machine, then copy the file over, then drop the mapped drive again. A bit clunky but doesn't incorporate much of a delay and this download only has to happen once per day.
The good news is, the file download / copy now works every time. The bad news is that removing the temporarily mapped drive after the copy has taken place, doesn't and I can't figure out why.
Here are the functions I use to map / unmap the drive :
Code:
Option Compare Database
Option Explicit
Private Const RESOURCETYPE_ANY = &H0&
Private Const CONNECT_UPDATE_PROFILE = &H1&
Private Const RESOURCE_CONNECTED As Long = &H1&
[Code] .....
I have separate functions to check existing drive mappings on the local machine and thus determine an appropriate vacant letter to use for the temporary mapping - they work fine.
Unfortunately the UnMapDrive function returns False (even though I switch the active drive to C: and force the connection to be cancelled with the fForce flag) So the mapping always remains on the users profile.
I don't want to permanently map drives on the users' profiles, just briefly for the purposes of this daily file download.

Is there a way to automatically link the front end to the back end without going through the manual steps?
Can anyone direct me to some code?

I had posted this in another area but didn't receive a response and my whole project has ground to a halt until I sort this out :(
I have made a database with front and back ends. Now I wish to be able to use the front end over the Internet but the IP address of the back end keeps changing weekly because of my ISP.
Now I have made a splash screen at the start of the program which asks for the IP address and when this is entered the front end links to the back end - but I can't get the code right for this
The code I have at the moment is embarrasingly wrong so I'm not putting it up here
The code I have at the moment has a box that asks for user to enter the IP address - I need it to use the IP address to enter the database at ip//data.mdb

Hello,
I know there are posts on forums all over the internet on this topic, but it is just one aspect in particular that I would like some simple advice on. I have worked through user-level security suggestions online and made a test back-end database that has a user and a group, named "Developer." All of the privelleges are activated for Developer. Developer is the only user who can access the data of "Table1." I've created an RWOP query that retrieves the data from Table1, Developer is the owner of this query. I've also created a front end and tried to create a link to Table1; which is denied, as I had hoped it would be. My question is this: How should I structure my front-end so that users can retrieve data from this query, but cannot obtain the data using a different front-end?
Thank you very much for any advice you can offer,
Matt

I am developing a 2010 database which is split. In the back end I am linking to csv files - with a new file every month to link to.
What I would like to do (and have not been able to find a way to do at all so far! ) is each month to add the new table link in the _be and to be able to choose it in the front end user interface to view reports on, without having to "re-programme" the underlying queries to use the new linked table.

Have a database with a back end that I have been working on. The database resides on a USB at the moment. I was ready to deploy and now when I try to re-link the back end tables, I repeatedly have the following error: "Your network was interrupted. To continue, close the database, and then open it again."
At first I thought this was something to do with the network, as I was moving it to a shared network drive. However, I can recreate the same issue using someone else's computer and using my USB (although it's mapped to a different drive letter). I've tried a few things, including recreating the back end by importing only the table structure, but still no luck.

I did a search in here as well as Google to figure out why when I relinked the front end to the back end after adding 2 tables to the back end that the tables did NOT show up on the front end. Only the original tables that I began with. From what I have read there are different ways to do it. One suggestion on here was to create the table on the front end and export it to the back end. I guess I will have to do this going forward.
But my question is, after searching pages upon pages with no luck, since I already have the tables in the back end how do I tell the front end to find them and link them?

My question encompasses a front end connected to multiple back ends. It is probably a mundane point, but reading a few articles didn't seem to touch on it.
By this, let me toss out that I am thinking of the personnel where I work when I say 95% have a hard time using email and MS Word, let alone mundane functions like find a file, etc. As such, I have to make my front-ends extremely user friendly.
With that in mind, when developers have multiple back ends, what are thoughts about the best way to relink when required? Even when there are 'more sophisticated' users? Security not an issue or is an issue (inasmuch as can be handled in access)?
Ex: Large corporation with a multitude of user ability. Large database with say 3 different back ends.
I was thinking about keeping a front-end table with each table name and UNC path, hard coding paths to corresponding table names, etc.
Personally I don't have a need for multiple back-ends, but the question came up while reading.

I was using the database when there was a network error and I had to close it. When I tried to reopen it I got the error message: Record(s) cannot be read; no read permission on 'MSysAccessObjects'. I logged off the PC and logged back on various others, but keep getting the same message. Can anyone tell me if this is terminal or is there a way around it. I do have a backup, but it's a few days old and a lot of work will need re-entering' so any help would be appreciated!!

As the thread title suggests, my problem is that I have a database that will not open via the mapped drive. There are other databases stored on this drive that open fine so it is only the one database that is causing me a headache.
Any suggestions as to why only this one database would be having this problem and any ideas on how to resolve it would be greatly appricated.
Thanks

I need securing an Access database. I am about to put the database on a shared drive. I want myself to be able to do anything (of course), my co-worker Paul to be able to ONLY enter information (along with being able to view everything like forms and reports), and my boss to ONLY be able to view everything (form/report wise).
I found this post [URL] .... about how to secure a database. I spent all day doing it, but it didn't work at all! I just got a bunch of errors whenever I tried to do anything, so I deleted the database and re-used an earlier version.

I want to access my database from different locations. More than 1 user may be using it at the same time.
Can I put the back-end of a split database in a Google Drive folder or a Dropbox folder and have multiple copies of the front-end for each user in their own location.
I know that Dropbox creates copies if two people update the backend at the same time. What about Google Drive? How does Google Drive handle it.
What are the potential problems of using these two services to share a database?

hi,
I have two tables named "Uni" and "MainTable"
"Uni" has two fields, named "A" and "B".
"MainTable" has three fields, named "aa", "bb" and FinalAns"
Uni
A | B
-------------
001 | 444
004 | 999
042 | 129
MainTable
aa |bb |FinalAns
--------------------------------
001 |XX|? - should be 444
042 |XX |? - should be 129
Below queries code is written by me:
UPDATE MainTable set [MainTable].[FinalAns] = [Uni].[B]
WHERE [MainTable].[aa]=[Uni].[A]
But it does not works, it prompted me "Enter Parameter Value Uni.B" and then "Enter Parameter Value Uni.A"
Can anyone teach me how to solve my problem? - can be using macro or vb code or queries.

Issue: We have software that maps some of our "custom" grades that we use locally to the state-specified grades when we submit.
Ex: Grades PA and PP map to report to the state as PK. The data stays in our software as PA and PP however as it is needed that way.
I'm trying to run queries comparing our data with what is at the state to head off mismatches and want to find a way to NOT have these grades show a false mismatch. The field for flagging as mismatch is for example
GX = iif ([schoolgrade] not like [stategrade], "GRD", null)
I tried doing a compound iif statement in my comparison query field but got stalled there as there are 6 or 7 grades that map, one with 3 that maps to one state grade.
What would be the best way to alleviate these? I know I can do a change query, but I'm assuming that can only be done one at a time, and I would have to import the data. Doing find and replace is too manual, and the data is updated daily so I would want something automated.
At this point I'm thinking of creating a bunch of change queries and automating the running of them but that seems like the long way to do it...

I'm trying to set up a simple query that links four tables. However, the tables are extremely large, all in excess of 1.5GB each so I had to split the tables up into four separate DBs. I've tried the following with no success:
1) Link the 4 tables in the DB which contains my primary key. This quickly inflates increases the file size above 2GB and won't let me go any further.
2) Build a remote query to connect the four tables. This looked promising until I tried to run the query and it became evident that it only knows to point to the last database source that you specified.
I'm running everything locally on my C drive. The data source are simple text files (1.6 million rows) from the FDA website.

Hello thank you for reading my question
I am setting up a database for a training centre, part of this includes registration
The academic year I am working with runs over 36 weeks with 24 teaching weeks, 2 x 3 week holidays, 2 x 1 week reading weeks and the final 2 weeks for exams.
I aim to set the system up so that when a user opens the application, I get the username from windows, the day and time then open the correct register. That bit should be fine.
As I have 36 weeks I want to some how map the week numbers to the dates at the start of the term and also the holidays. There are 2 reasons for this, the first being so that when the user logs in the register only shows the current week instead of needing to search along all 24 or 36 entries, the other reason is so that when checking the whole register the holidays are not shown.
Does anybody have any suggestions or pointers as to how I can do this?
Thanks

Howdy all.
I need to take my database 50 miles to a factory site so that an engineer and I can review/modify all the records, ~450 so far.
Can I copy the front end and back end files to my laptop, review edit the data offsite, and then overwrite the back end file on my server when I get back? Are there any issues with doing that?
Thanks,
bugleboy
