Calculated Field In Access Query Contributes To Crashing Excel Table Upon Import
Oct 24, 2012
I have a simple calculated field (As "Ratio") that is readable in Access 2010 query, but crashes in Excel upon importing/running the query in an .xlsx table.
ERROR MESSAGE in EXCEL: "The query did not run, or the database table could not be opened...check database server..contact your database administrator.."
I am simply taking the cost amounts of each project record (shown as "Record Cost") and dividing it by the "Total Cost" of that project to render "Ratio".
The Total Cost is retrieved from another table.
Testing scenarios:
If we exclude Ratio, the whole query import just fine.
If we filter the query to one project (i.e. "Project A") the ratio field imports fine.
However, the whole unfiltered query does not with the ratio!
Other testing scenarios:
If we use a constant for the denominator AS "1" in Ratio (i.e. recordcost/1) the whole unfiltered query and ratio field imports fine.
If we use a constant for the numerator AS "1" in Ratio (i.e. 1/totalcost) the whole unfiltered query upon import crashes in Excel.
This is a mock example of the dataset, the actual query has 50K+ records:
Project Service Date Record Cost Total Cost Ratio
A Welding 1/1/2012 $100 $120 83%
A Plumbing 2/1/2012 $20 $120 17%
B Welding 1/1/2012 $50 $75 67%
B Plumbing 2/1/2012 $25 $75 33%
C Welding 1/1/2012 $40 $61 66%
C Plumbing 2/1/2012 $21 $61 34%
Every time I try to import a CSV file into my Access database it crashes. I've tried repairing it but the repaired database crashes as well. Any ideas on what could cause this?
Hello guyz, With the help of 'Import External Data' wizard, my import did not happen. My datatypes and Col. Headers in excel are matching for what I have in access table. Alternatively, I selected to import the data into new table and all of the data got imported. My question, since I already have some data in table I want data to be imported, how can I do about bringing all the data from new table I created during import to the existing table. Please suggest. Thanks in advance.
Im familiar with Ms Access, but have never used VBA or Scripts. I have 37 Excel files with the same data and would like to import into one file. Data will be received on a monthly basis into the same directory and I would like to automatically upload the data into the same file in Access.
I'm pretty new to Access so I hope this question is not to simple/stupid ;)
Ok, I have an Excel Worksheet that I want to import into an Access Table. The column headers are identical! The only problem is:
- the Access table looks up a couple of the columns from other Access tables. When I try to import the Excel data, Access does (properly) report an error.
- Error: the records from the Excel file were added to the Access table but not all values were imported (no values were imported into the lookup columns...)
Any idea how I should procede so that I can import my data into Access?
I wanted to import data in a access table using a form in access. The form should contain a browse button to browse the file and then a command button to start importing.
I have a lot of Excel files and each of them has 3 sheets that I would like to import in Access 2010. How can I import them without having to do one by one?
I have some data in excel which I am importing it into MS Access 2002. Each excel file (one worksheet per file) is imported into separate tables.
I want to combine all my imported tables into one table. Is that possible, if yes then how and if no then what can be done to get single table after impoting data from various excel files.
I have code written which imports excel data to a access table but after the first import it fails due to duplicates, how can i tell it to ignore duplicates in the table and only copy new records?
code is below.
Code: Function SyncEmployes() Dim lngColumn As Long Dim xlx As Object, xlw As Object, xls As Object, xlc As Object
I want a user to click a button, have the file open dialog open, they select a spreadsheet, and then it imports into a table. The problem is the filename can be different every time. The table name will remain constant.
Here is the OnClick:
Code: Private Sub Command8_Click() On Error GoTo Err_ImportSpreadsheet_Click DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acImport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel2Xml, "Table1", "T_Staff.xls", "Yes"
I have an excel table called Parameter with a column called "Test" -- The column contains integer numbers only. So all the numbers in the column are like 5,10,15,20 etc..I have an access macro which imports the entire excel table into a access table called dbo_Parameters
I have created an access macro to run "Saved Import" for 'dbo_Parameters"..After uploading, all the data in the column Test is formatted to mm/ dd/ yyyy. The Field Size is Integer, but the format is view format is converted to a Date..I have to change the properties of the column to "General Number" and get rid of the date format.how to change the import format!
a) The format of the column in Excel - It is number b) The import procedure and saved import. I am unable to change the format of the import during upload. I make sure that the import format column is Integer
where "CustomerFormatted" is the sheet I am trying to import in to the "Customer" table.
The error I get is Run Time Error 3011, The MS Access engine could not find the object "CustomerFormatted" make sure its name is spelled correctly ....
Is there any other way I can import an excel sheet in to an access table?
I used to import excel data into access successfully, many times but now I have to import excel data into an existing Access table with foreign key fields, which makes me problems.
Its just doesn't work...and Im sure the forien key fields are the prob cause, the other fields are going well ...
I have a form which i use for a user to select an excel file they want to import and then click a cmd button to import the file into a table which works fine, however i want to append a date into a date field from an unbound txtbx before the file is imported so it will look something like;
I would like to link to an external data source (table) from MS Access 2003. I attempt to use the 'Import' feature to do this, and select 'ODBC Connection'. I am trying to connect to an application called 'Action Remedy'. I make the connection fine, but when Access attempts to import the table, it does not like one of the Action Remedy field names, and the Import aborts. The name is something like "Call Status-History.Closed.Time". Obviously, Access does not like this field name. And the chances of getting it changed (on the A/R backend are slim to none). Thus, my question: Is there away around this ?
I Cannot import excel data to an access table .The type is the same. The colums are the same number. No duplicate values exist in the colum that is primary key.
I want to make a database of diseases (need to learn them for school and would like a serchable database on my smart phone for future reference). Unfortunately spent a lot of time making hundreds of pages of word tables before i realized a database would be better. See attached image or pdf. Is there a way to import the tables to Access?
I need to preserve the hierarchic info in the nested bullet point lists. E.g. under treatment i might have a point called Acute treatment, with sub-levels, Step 1, Step 2, etc. with their own sub-levels. I need to maintain this relational hierarchic info.
I have a form that I am trying to setup to click on the button and it opens dialog box to select file, then it transfers/appends the data into an existing table. I got the button to open the dialog box and select the file, but nothing is being added to the table. Can someone please help?
I have created an xls and its the same format as the table in my db. Same column name and same data type. However, when I try to import the xls to an existing table in my db, there was an error message that says, "An error occurred while trying to import file 'C:MyDocumentsPOSystem_Book.xls'. The file was not imported'". This error does not occur when I import it to a new table. Can anyone help in this? A million thanks in advance.
Not sure I posted to the correct forum, but here goes
I would like to import an excel sheet into a new access table. However I am having problems with multiple fields.
Lets say for instance that in my excel sheet I have the following fields
Field nameName ExamExam_scoreDate PurgeMaths607-01-2007
--------------------------
Then I import that into a table. Then that is no problem, but then going back to the excel sheet I have noticed that one study could take many different exams. Hence the below
NameExamExam_scoreDate PurgeEnglish707-01-2007
------------------------ we have a problem in the table because the fields begin to multiply if Purge has taken 20 exams
fieldname name exam exam_score date exam2 exam_score2 exam3 exam_score3 exam4
and so on....can you imagine if I hit 40?
I was thinking maybe I could add some lookup field to a cell in excel or access? Am I on the correct path? Since I want to import, but the multiple fields/columns are getting in the way.
 Hi all - hope someone can help I dont know where to start.
I've got a cmd button that imports data from a excel sheet - that actual code is working fine, however when it runs it causes Access to freeze.
The data in imported correctly - so it must complete the process but Access locks up and has to be ended via task manager.
Any one got any clues why this is happening and how I can stop it?
This is an Access 97 database running mainly on NT and 2000

Hello All is there a way (i guess using VBA) to import an excel spreadsheet into an access table without having to go through the wizards, if you know all the field names and other variables ??
I thought i would ask this question an how to import data from excel into access.
I am using sage to invoice clients and i can output this in to excel format then i would like the best and simplest way to pull the data though into access.
The data file has column headings at the first row ie A1 though to J1 and after this is the data, i have a table setup with the relivent table names, I had thought how easy this would be, but as always this was not the case.
The outputed excel sheet will vary in location so i think i need a diolog box to select the file and then some how link it to extract the data, is this right and if so how can it be achived.
Any thoughts
Alastair

I'm having a Excel Sheet With first column which has numeric data for first 70 or 80 records then comes some string data, here i'm using this statement to import data from excel to MS Access DataBase, but its not retriving the records which were in string data type, is there any other way to do this...?
SELECT [Item #], [Description], [Pack Size], [Price] FROM [Database=C:Test.xls;Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=2].[Sheet1$] Where [Item #] Is Not Null
OK. I feel like an idiot but I did read the manual, Googled, and Microsoft help, but still cannot do it. The problem is on the import feature, there is no option to choose an Excel file.
I lowered the macro security level to take it out of "sandbox" mode, I reinstalled office and selected run all features again. I updated as well.
I tried blank databases to import to. No luck. I go to external data, import and I can choose ODBC, XML, sharepoint or Access files only.
I am using MS Office Pro 2003. Thanks for the help.
