Can't Add New Record In Linked Table In Windows 2000
Dec 4, 2005
Hi,
I developed a database in Access 2000 on an XP SP2 machine with linked tables to another Access 2000 database.
Everything works fine using my machine, but when a user running Windows 2000 uses the database, they cannot add a new record to the linked table (either directly using the datasheet or a form). Running a query on the table also did not let me add a new record.
I have searched the MSDN libraries, but I wasn't able to find anything.
Any help much appreciated.

I have an Access mdb file that uses linked tables to connect to SQL Server 2000 using a System DSN. The Access database contains many databound forms that are used to update data in SQL Server. Recently, we moved the database from a Windows 2000 server to a Windows 2003 server. After we did this, the Access database would lock up at certain spots in the forms.
We have been investigating this for over a week, and finally realized that it seems to be a Windows 2003 issue. We have tried putting the database on two different servers running Windows 2000 and have had no issues.
We then tried putting it on two different Windows 2003 servers, and had the constant lockups.
Our original thought was that there was an issue with the new Jet drivers for Windows 2003, but we looked at the msjet40.dll on both Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 and the version on all is 4.00.9025.0.
Does anybody have any idea on what could be causing this?

Hi
I have a database that currently has security in place so that users input their own usernames and passwords to access the database. The users have recently been added to a windows 2000 server and I want to be able to use their windows 2000 server logon credentials to provide them with automatic access to the database. Is there anyone out there who knows how to set this up? It is a rather urgent request if you could get back to me either on this forum or via email

many thanks

I have a website that is asp (not .net) based with an Access DB and I am in the process of replacing an old windows 2000 server with a much faster windows 2003 server. Here lies the problem I have a script as part of the admin that exports data to a csv file. The query joins 4 tables together to get the data needed for the export. On the windows 2000 server it takes 1-5 seconds to execute and have the csv file ready for download. On the window 2003 server it times out. I striped it down to use 2 joins and it worked although it took more like 10-20 seconds to export. This exports a specific range of ID's and the range is normally only 40-50 rows. If I put time stamps in the code the problem is in the query of the database, so I know its not in the file write etc.
I am going to rewrite it to use multible querys instead of one large query, but I have many other sites that I am moving to this server that would work better if I can figure out why it is so slow.
The windows 2000 is a 900 mhz server the windows 2003 is a 2.8GHZ server both have 1 GIG of ram. The database file is on the local drive on both servers. I am guessing it is a difference in the Jet version, I just haven't been able to find a solution to the problem. This uses a DSN connection, configured the same on both servers. I have also tried it as a DSN-less connection with the same result.
I have installed access on the server and to execute the command in access it is <2 sec.
I am not an access expert I normally program in .net and php and use MySQL and MsSQL for databases, we just have these legacy sites that use Access DB's

Hi All,
This is my problem -
My customer has Access programs that work on their Windows 98 OS PC's, but when they try to use them on Windows 2000 OS PC's they will not work.
The programs I believe were originally written in Access 97 and now they have Access 2000 on the PC's.
By not working I mean the following -
The Access program allows them to enter a document name and then the file opens in Word - BUT - when they use it in Windows 2000 it does not open the document at all. It says file not found in Windows 2000 and the file does exist.
** The reason they have Access opening files is that Access keeps track of them for auditing purposes.
Now here is something that I want to mention. On PC's that were upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 the programs work.
Can anyone here tell me what is missing from 98 to 2000 that would do this.
Thank you very much for your time.

I obtained this code from the Net and am successfully using it on a form in MS ACCESS 2002 under Windows 2000. However, all of the string functions result in compile errors and force debug mode when the form is executed under XP Pro (Compile error: Can't find project or library). Any assistance will be appreciated as I am approaching my deadline for rolling this app out on XP Pro systems. Thanks.

Hi.
I was wondering if any of you have had experience firsthand or knew of reasons why an Access 97 database should not be installed on a WIndows 2000 network?

Hi all,
having some serious troubles with a MS Access 2000 project running on a Windows 2003 Server environment.
If I compile the project it doesn't produce a compiling-error. Everything seems to work fine. Creating a .mde file and running it on a Windows Server 2003 produces some serious errors. The project seems to be starting correctly but opening a form or simply trying to close the application causes MS Access to crash!
I tried the project on 2 different Windows Server 2003 environments, 1 having MS Access 2000 installed and 1 having only MS Access 2000 Runtime installed. Both are experiencing the same problems.
The following references are used in the project:
- Visual Basic For Applications
- Microsoft Access 9.0 Object Library
- Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.6 Library
- Microsoft DAO 3.6 Object Library
- Microsoft Jet and Replication Objects 2.6 Library
- OLE Automation
- Microsoft Office 9.0 Object Library
- Microsoft ADO Ext. 2.8 for DLL and Security
I tried the following solutions to solve the problem:
* Removing MS Access completely and reinstalling it.
* Compiling and creating a .mde on the Windows 2003 Server which has the full version of MS Access 2000 installed.
* Using JetComp to repair the database.
* Creating a new MS Access 2000 application and copy all Forms/Modules into it.
Nothing helped so far..
The same project is running correctly on Windows 98, ME, 2000, 2000 Server and XP Pro/Home. Both Windows 2003 Servers are fully updated, including updates regarding MS Access.
Help...

I have written a database in Access 2003, saved as an Access 2000 format. This runs fine on Windows XP workstations. When I install the same system on a Windows 7 system, my login screen launches, the user is able to enter in their name and password. Then nothing happens. What is supposed to happen is a form opens up after the password is entered that applies security written in code based on the user.

I have a basic database design, well I think so anyway. It only has two tables:
1. tblClientInfo
2. tblNotes
Basically each client has multiple notes/comments that can be linked to its record, hence the tblNotes table. The two tables have a one-to-many relationship, being that each customer can have many notes.
I then have two forms:
1. Claims Loss Form
2. tblNotes_DatasheetSub1
So I can enter multiple notes for each customer. The problem I am having is with the report output. It wants to print every note (record) that is linked to the customer. I just need it to print the most recent note for each customer (It would save a lot of wasted paper).
Example of a print out of what it is doing:
John Doe - 123 Easy St - Notes 1 (Most Recent Note)
John Doe - 123 Easy St - Notes 2 (Previous Note)
John Doe - 123 Easy St - Notes 3 (and so on...)
It is printing duplicates of the same customer by adding the additional notes for that same customer on a new line.
How can I tell it to only print the customer one time in the report, and most importantly, to only use the most recent note that is linked to the customer?
I tried using DMax("NoteDate","tblNotes"), but this only returns one customer with one note. I need it to do that for each and all customers.
I have successfully ran a subquery (two queries with one linked to another) by following detailed instructions from this page I found: [URL] .... It works, but the problem is it only shows the latest date for each note, not the actual contents of the note. I feel so close with this option, but so far at the same time.
The TOP n records per group looks promising that I found here: [URL] ...., but I honestly don't know how to implement it correctly in my SQL. I am very much still learning Access and apparently have stumbled into something that is much more complicated than I had originally imagined. I just assumed I could filter the duplicates out, or tell access to print the last or most recent note record for each customer.

I created a database that performs certain functions ("functional database") and I want to archive the changes I make to that database's structure in a central repository that is nothing more than another database ("repository") that I will create to track all of the revisions made to the 80 or so databases within my department.
I would like to create a link on the main form in the functional database that will, on click open the specific record in the repository database that refers to the revisions previously made to the functional database.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am getting the error RunTime '2105' You can't go to the specifed record.
Just converted my test database to read from a sybase linked table rather than the development local table. It reads fine but the new record button now gives the above error. I presume I need to code myself a new record function . . .
Is this what I have to do, and if so, what's the best (and quickest!) way of going about it?
thanks

I have several tables that are linked that I need to be able to add to. This is an example of the structure:
Patient Info
ID
FK_Ward - ID of Ward table
FK_Room - ID of Room table
FK_Cond - ID of Condition table
Ward
ID
WardID
Room
ID
RoomNumber
Condition
ID
Description
Unfortunately, its not the exact one as I can't post that here! What I am trying to do is to add a new patient record using information from the other tables as guides - e.g. the user selects the name of the Ward but the ID in the Ward table is entered, the User selects the number of the room but again the ID in the Room table is entered, and for the Condition same thing. So I would like to have dropdowns (or ComboBoxes) for each of these and based on the user's selections add a new record to PatientInfo using the ID values as links.

From what I have read, I understand you can't use the seek command on a recordset from a linked table from another database. Is that true? If so, what is the alternative to find a specific record in the table using an indexed field?

hi,
I linked a table (front to back) yesterday. I had a user enter information into this table. It's a login table. The login screen of the asp page is not able to find the record, even though I can see it in both tables. I am not sure what's wrong, since both tables show the same information. Does anybody have any ideas?
thanks in advance.

I am trying to build a Form that will show an estimate (then eventually will be moved to a project if customer and employee aggree to price and project) in a Form F_Estimates is a M_Customers(Customer_ID) (Based on a Table) and thier info in a Subform. Also is the "projected costs" from parts out of the Parts(Part_ID) (Based on another Table) in a second Subform as a list that I need to calculate $$$ in
(Dang that still sounds evil and definately NOT understandable even after edit... so)
Here's some basic info
Tables
EstimatesandParts - Table
EstimatesandParts_ID : Autonumber
Estimate_ID : Number
Part_ID : Number
Parts - Table
Part_ID : Autonumber
PartNumber : Text (not a number due to some part#s have letters in them)
PartName : Text
Unit Price : Currency
Description : Text
Estimates - Table
Estimate_ID : Autonumber
InvoiceNumber : Text (again can have letters in it)
EstimateDate : Date/Time
EstimateTime : Date/Time
Employee_ID : Number
Customer_ID : Number
ProblemDescription : Memo
Customers - Table
Customer_ID : Autonumber
FirstName : Text
LastName : Text
CompanyName : Text
Address : Text
City : Text
Province_State : Text
Postal_ZIPCode : Text (CDN Postal codes are letter num letter...)
you can see the link table in the EstimatesandParts Table
Now I want to use that link to populate a subform in the F_Estimates form
Forms
SF_Customers - SubForm
(all boxes atm are text boxes on this form till I figure out the Parts section then will use same base for this so I can pick any customer in the database to be the customer for this estimate. Also will have ctrl button for making new customer with customer form and a refresh on Focus Gain bit of code)
FirstName
LastName
CompanyName
Address
City
Province_State
Postal_ZIPCode
SF_Parts - SubForm
Default View -Continuous Forms
(want it to be a list of parts that I can grab prices and descriptions from then in a bit of code to calculate a cost of parts)
Part_ID : Combo Box
Control Source - Part_ID
Row Source Type - Table/Query
Row Source - SELECT Parts.Part_ID, Parts.PartNumber, Parts.PartName, Parts.UnitPrice, Parts.Description FROM Parts ORDER BY Parts.Description;
(Pulls info from the table Parts for input into a list of parts to be used on that project)
PartName : Text Box
UnitPrice : Text Box
(here's where I run into problems due to the fact that the form is not based on the parts table but rather the link table EstimatesandParts so I can't propogate the info to the 2 other text boxes, ps I dont care if they cant be text boxes and have to be linked or some other type I'm not "set" just need to find out how to make it work )
(have tried a couple things to complete this task)
Me.txtPartName = Me.Part_ID.Column(2)
Me.txtUnitPrice = Me.Part_ID.Column(3)
(works AWSOME ... for ONE ROW then propogates the second selection to the first and second and third selection to first second and third and so on ...)
(tried to make control source for the txtPartName to)
=Forms!Parts!Partname
(Doesnt exist .. akkk, cant use ActiveForm either as it doesn't focus on the SubForm but the MainForm ... cry)
F_Estimates - Form
Estimate_ID
InvioceNumber
EstimateDate
EstimateTime
ProblemDescription
(all basic Text Boxes)
Employee_ID
Customer_ID
(Combo Boxes Select Customer and Employee from list of present ones of each)
SF_Customers
SF_Parts
(Both SubForms on the main form)
Now this is an Exerp from my entire Database I like to work on one small problem at a time and I have made this its own little database till I figure out the problem then I will bring the info I learn back into the rest of the database and go from there ...
Hope you can help I have a feeling I will need to make a recordset and go from there but I'm just not able to wrap my head around that for some reason
Thanks in advance for ANY and ALL help that I get from here

I am having a difficult time figuring out how to have a table add a new record that includes the Windows username of the user that clicks the button on my form. The function is in place that pulls the Windows username:
Code:
Public Function getWinUser() As String
getWinUser = Environ("UserName")
End Function
I then call the function during the button click by simply adding getWinUser. Unfortunately, all that occurs is that the same record gets updated instead of creating a new record.

I have an access db with a linked table (to Sharepoint) which contains about 15000 records. I have to copy those records to the local access db. To do this I have a bit of VBAcode. It works, but for each next record that is copied it takes a bit longer. When starting the program the records are copied quite fast, but soon you see it slowing down until after a couple of thousand records it just goes too slow to be usefull, meaning it would take a lot of days to copy all records.
What I now do is let it copy 500 records and exit ms-access completely and then start it again and let it copy the next 500 records. This works but is tedious as I have to do it about 35 times. Why this gradual slowdown occurs?
The VBA code is pretty straightforward.(I use VBA because I do a bit of data wrangling while reading in the values of the records)
Code:
Dim importdb1 As DAO.Database
Dim rsimportdb1 As DAO.Recordset
Dim i As Double
Set importdb1 = CurrentDb
Set rsimportdb1 = importdb1.OpenRecordset("2015")
Set rsMain = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("tbl_import")
[code]....

I am getting a type mismatch error when I try to set up a recordset to add a record to. Here is the code:
Dim MyDb As Database
Dim MySet As Recordset
Set MyDb = CurrentDb
Set MySet = MyDb.OpenRecordset("GAME STATUS",dbOpenTable,dbAppendOnly)
I am getting the error at the Set MySet = MyDb.Openrecordset("GAME STATUS") statement. I needed to add some reference libraries to get the Database type to work as Access was just installed on this computer. Is there another library that I need to install to get the recordset definition to work or am I just doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am opening and closing a series of Excel 2000 Workbooks using Access 2000 VBA and want this sequence to be able to complete without any human intervention.
However, there are 2 instances when this stops and waits for a human option to be selected:
1. When the spreadsheet is password protected
2. When the spreadsheet has automatic links I get the message:
"The Workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to update this workbook with changes made to the other workbook?"
How can I code it so that in situation 1 it skips this file and in situation 2 it automatically defaults to do not update?
Any help most appreciated.

If I have a report in MS Access 2000 generated based on the criteria selected of a project with work order "9999" with the labor costs, materials costs and the Totals of each crew1, crew2,... and I would like to have those expenditures populated in corresponding cel in Excel for each crew, HOW would I do it?
To think it out loud, could I create a button on a form, so when I select the criteria for the work order, and when I click the button, it should refresh/update the Exel file with the new data...?? How do I write VBA code for that...?

Hi everybody,
I have recently been doing a conversion for my boss for a access 2000 database (both front and backend) to a MSSQL backend.
I finished the conversion today (as quite a lot of the code / queries ran slow due to access running the queries locally rather than on the server). And tested it on my and my boss's machine with no problems so he gave the go ahead to update everybody to our new mssql 2000 backend with the modified frontend.
This is when the problems started; We had two different sets of forms for accessing one of our databases systems - the log system, one is the original dynaset based form, and the other is a newer set which uses snapshot views and preforms updates via queries. Nobody uses the old dyanset system apart from my boss and one of the administrative team as they have things on that window which they need to see. About 30 minutes into the release of the new database the system frooze up on my bosses computer and nobody could create a new log (the server was timing out). I assumed this had something to do with the old dynaset's creating locks on the table.
I offlined the database and kicked everybody out of the front end, turned it on again and tied again, this time banning everybody from the dynaset system. Within 10 minutes another computer frooze up, again with a timeout on the insert query. I discovered that after you had added a new log to the database it would timeout on all subquent additions (something it hadn't done during testing) . Further investigatiion showed it was the snapshot list window causing the error, so coded the add log window to close the list before preforming the insert query and then reopen it afterwards. This allowed my machine to make multible additions without flaw. So I released a new client to everybody. 15 minutes later it was timing out again, but this time there you could not even make one new record.
I checked for locks on the table though the server management table and couldn't find any for the Log table. I have restarted the SQL server box and with no avil. So I reverted our backend to the access mdb file and told people to use the old client.
I am at a complete lose to why this is happening, if anybody has had any expericences like this or knows the cause please tell me.
Some information on the database in question.
It was made as an access 2 database all intergrated into one file, then it was seperated into two files (frontend and backend). Upgraded to Access 97, then to 2000 before this final update to MSSQL 2000.
The log system has two main tables. The first is the log title / info table which links (one to many) to a log entry table. This problem only occurs on the main log table and does not appear to be reoccurring anywhere else within the database. The main log table has just under 18,000 rows in it.
Thank you in advance for any help,
Dom
