Can't Edit Due To Calculated Column. Workaround?

Mar 30, 2007

Table A has a field for Full Name (Bob Jones)
Table B has two separate fields for first and last (Bob and Jones). Table B's contents are actually based on an XML import so I can not just change the table structure.

I want to join the content from these two tables together based on full name.

So first I created a query on table B with a new field created with the expression =[First] & " " & [Last].

I then created a query with table A and query B where I joined the two full-name columns together.

This works perfectly. However, I can't edit the values in this query and I believe from the help files that it's because there's a calculated column in one of the tables.

Is there a way to get around this?

I thought maybe inside my ImportXML VB function once I imported the XML data I could populate an empty column with First + Last but I've read about 50 articles and they're all over my head and I can't figure out how to just concatenate the two columns together into one using VB. It seems if I did this I would avoid having to use a calculated column in a query and this would fix my problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Can't Edit Query Which Has Calculated Fields

Jan 7, 2008

Hi!

I have done a query which has calculated fields, but I can't edit the stored fields directly from the query, instead I have to go to the table so as to edit it. Is this the way it works or is something wrong?

SELECT [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].N_OP, [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].[N° FAC EXP], [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].[FECHA CUMP], [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].[DERECHO PGC], [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].[VTO DER EXP], [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].[IMPORTE REINTEGRO], [DETALLE CONTENEDOR].CANTIDAD, [DETALLE CONTENEDOR].[VALOR FOB], [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE].[TIPO DE CAMBIO], [TIPO DE CAMBIO]*[VALOR FOB] AS [PRECIO VTA (ARS)], [PRECIO VTA (ARS)]*[CANTIDAD] AS [TOTAL(ARS)], [TOTAL(ARS)]/[TIPO DE CAMBIO] AS [TOTAL(USD)]
FROM [INSTRUCCIONES DE EMBARQUE], [DETALLE CONTENEDOR];

Modules & VBA :: Edit Recordset Querydef That Has Calculated Field

Jan 19, 2014

Is it possible to add/edit a record from a DAO querydef that has a calculated field in.

Code:

Set qdf = db.QueryDefs("qryOutput_" & strDept)
qdf.Parameters("Enter Date") = dDate
Set rs = qdf.OpenRecordset()

Using the rs.Edit or rs.AddNew worked fine until I put a calculated field in the query.

The calculated field is just a total of some fields in the table.

I thought this was something to do with dbOpenDynaset but it just keeps having the same error

Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

Subform Filtering Workaround

Aug 1, 2005

ok, i've discovered filtering does not work on subforms so i have searched the forum and modified some code to this:

Dim strSQL As String

strSQL = "Select * from tasks where"
strSQL = strSQL & Me!frmSubProjects.Form!Project = 2
Me!frmSubProjects.Form.RecordSource = strSQL

error message is " can't find the field 'frmSubProjects' referred to in your expression. (line3)

Please note a 'mouse over' of Me!frmSubProjects.Form!Project in the above code does show a result (first 'Project' value in subform) - so what am i doing wrong??

thanks in advance,
Paul

Raw Data/binary Field, Or A Workaround?

Jan 29, 2007

Hi there,
I have a simple bit of VBcode in my database which reads the password a user enters and 'encrypts' it for storing in the user table. It's more obfuscation than encryption to be honest, and I feel limited by the 'text' data type assigned to the password field.

At the moment it works by taking the password entered, and converting the whole lot into a byte array, then for each 'character' in the array, changing its binary value. At the moment it's then converted back into a string and dumped into the 'password' field, as garbage characters. But they are still characters, and if I go out of range of the character set it results in horrible errors :D.

I feel I may be missing the blindingly obvious and could just not convert it back to string, and write the binary into a text field instead, but I'm not sure how I'd get intelligible data back.

The reason it's not exactly encryption is because the key is the same for all characters on all passwords (I just multiply the binary value by 2!) what I want is to have a key as well, stored in another field alongside, but again can't implement this due to character-set range issues.

So my question is - is there a 'raw' data field hidden somewhere amongst the features of microsoft access, or should I be thinking about just storing the numbers themselves? For the moment I'll investigate the latter, but I'll appreciate any help! Thanks :)

Combo Box 64k Limit Workaround Examples?

Nov 3, 2006

Hi, I know well that combo box has a 64k limit, and whilst there are obvious work around, does anyone here have any sample code for such a solution?

I'm not an expert ms access programmer, and it would save me a lot of time if I had an example to work with.

Thanks

Tables :: Calculated Column Expression Formatting

Nov 4, 2013

I've now since moved everything into one table but i need formatting of my calculated field (I'm new to all this).

Below are the 3 expressions working independently of one another, I just need them combined in to one if possible. As I am getting an "invalid syntax" error or "too many arguments" when I try to get it working

PHP Code:

0.5*IIf([Type]="Offlist" And [APP_LINE_OFFA]>3,1,0)+0.2*IIf([Type]="Offlist" And [APP_LINE_OFFB]>2,1,0)+
IIf([Type]="Offlist",Abs([EP_DETAILS_OFF]*0.15+[REF_DETAILS_OFF]*0.15),0)

PHP Code:

IIf([Type]="Onlist",Abs([EP_DETAILS_ON]*0.15+[REF_DETAILS_ON]*0.2+[GEN_NOTE_ON]*0.2+[APP_LINE_ON]*0.25+[SPEC_INS_ON]*0.2),0)

PHP Code:

IIf([Type]="Aged Report", Abs([EP_DETAILS_AGED]*0.2+[REF_DETAILS_AGED]*0.2+[GEN_NOTES_AGED]*0.3+[SPEC_INS_AGED]*0.3),0)

Using IIF Statement Calculated Column Through Linked Table

Apr 10, 2015

Code:
IIf {ttblEQAnswer_FCLIT.ActionType} = 'Answer Affir Defense' andnot isnull({ttblEQAnswer_FCLIT.METPrep}) and not isnull({ttblEQAnswer_FCLIT.AttyInstr}) and
({ttblEQAnswer_FCLIT.METPrep})> date(1900,1,1) and not isnull({ttblEQAnswer_FCLIT.AttyInstr})
and {ttblEQAnswer_FCLIT.METPrep} < currentdate - 10
then 'Y' as [MET InstructNeed?],

I want to use the above formula to calculate a column. However, do I need to join the tables referenced above in order to get this formula to work? As it stands I'm getting an error that says "Malformed GUID in query expression".

Populating A Column In A Table Based On Values In An Existing Column

Mar 5, 2007

Hi all,

In the organisation that I work for employees get paid every 2 weeks on a Saturday. So for this financial year the pay period end dates have been 08/07/2006, 22/07/2006, 05/08/2006 etc

I have a column in an Access table listing various dates. I want the next column to be
populated with the next pay period end date after that date.

So if DATE is 05/07/2006 I want PAY PERIOD END to be 08/07/2006
and if DATE is 09/07/2006 I want PAY PERIOD END to be 22/07/2006 etc

How do I do this?

Kind Regards,

Now for the final output, have created another query which pull the above four quarter in each column from the cross tab...now the problem arises when i change the quarter to Q2 2014, Q3 2014, Q4 2014 & Q1 2014..it gives an error "Microsoft office Access database does not recognizes "Query name" as a valid field name or expression".

The error is because the second layer of query does not identifies Q1 2014.

How do i make access change the column automatically when the Q1 changes to Q2...

Modules & VBA :: Input String In Column Based On Data In Another Column?

Nov 30, 2014

I need to input a string into a column named "EventType". The code should first check if the column "Agent Name" contains any strings. If there is none, it will input "IBM Director" into the EventType column.

Once it has looped through the agent names, the code will then loop through the Details column and input into EventTypes based on what is displayed within the string.

These are the codes that I am using to achieve this, however nothing is being input into the EventType column.

Code:
Private Sub Command11_Click()
Dim dbs As DAO.Database
Dim rst As DAO.Recordset

Set dbs = CurrentDb
Set rst = dbs.OpenRecordset("Final")

[Code] ....

I think the problem lies with the code that checks the agent name. When I removed it, it managed to populate the EventType column based on the details. But I still need to find out how to check the agent name too.

Moving And SORTING Multiple Column Data Into One Column

Feb 25, 2008

Hi. I have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. I would like to take data from multiple columns and put the data into one column. Additionally, I do not want to exclude any data (union all) and I would like to group the resulting union by another field. For example:

Original data layout:

Column Headings: Sample Event, Depth 1, Depth 2, Depth 3,
1st Row Data: 1, 6, 9, 12, 9
2nd Row Data: 2, 7, 9, 8, 3

Desired data layout:

Column Headings: Sample Event, Depths
1, 6
1, 9
1,12
1, 9
2, 7
2, 9
2, 8
2, 3

So far I'm using the following SQL. What do I need to add or change to get my desired result of grouping the unioned depths by the 'sample event' field?

I appreciate any help anyone may have to offer. Thank you.

SELECT Depth1 AS Depths
FROM Depth_Velocity_Substrate_Correct
Union all
SELECT Depth2
FROM Depth_Velocity_Substrate_Correct
Union all
SELECT Depth3
FROM Depth_Velocity_Substrate_Correct
Union all
SELECT Depth4
FROM Depth_Velocity_Substrate_Correct
Union all
SELECT Depth5
FROM Depth_Velocity_Substrate_Correct
