Cannot Run Multi-table Parameter Query With Criteria Specified In Form

Dec 7, 2011

I've created a farm database, with a form (frmSearch) that will allow user to filter data. The form comprises of combo box and list box etc... for the user to input their own criteria. The subform below has a datasource. The data source is based on a query (qContractionSearch) which is basically a parameter query with 3 tables. The problem is, however, that it won't work with 3 tables... but will work if data source comprises just one table.

See the farm database attachment...and go to frmSearch...then go to Contraction tab. (The Cattle tab filter works fine-it only has a single-table datasource).i have a requery macro which runs whenever the user clicks 'search'.

Multi-table, Multi-criteria: Avoid Repeating Records

Apr 10, 2008

Hi everyone. Apologies if this has come up before, but the search terms I've tried here and on google keep turning up the wrong information.

At work I manage a large database with many tables. It stores data for participants in a research study. Each table stores the data for a different test, so one participant may have multiple records. Primary keys for these tables are defined by a combination of the participant and date of test fields. (Everything is dependent upon a table that stores the static info for participants, so the database is normalized.)

I want to be able to make a table that lists target participants and dates, and then create a query that looks at this table and pulls all the available data from various tables for those individuals that was recorded within one year of the target dates.

I've successfully made queries that meet these criteria while pulling data from only one table. The problem I'm having is that when I try to pull from multiple tables, each with it's own date field that needs to be used as a criterion, I end up excluding almost all the data, because most of the target participants do not have all the requested data within the target dates.

I've tried being inclusive with my criteria (using ORs), but then I end up with tons of data that I don't want and I need to filter through it, which defeats the purpose of the query.

Any advice on handling this issue, or do I basically just need to create a separate query for each table?

I'm sorry if this is too vague, but it's illegal for me to upload any of my own dataset. I could probably come up with an example if it's helpful, though.

Thanks!

Queries :: How To Activate Query Criteria For Multi-combo Box Via Form

Aug 12, 2014

I am trying to make a form where the user can check/uncheck query criteria via several check boxes. The idea is that the user can start with many criteria and then deselect criteria if the search does not return enough results.

I have been setting up several queries and thought I would combine them in a "Master Query", since I thought it may be easier to deal with each criterion and the respective switch this way.

Lets say we run a hairdresser.

I have a field in the form that allows me to select clients. This is also used in the query. Works fine. Now to the hard part.

Example 1:

Each customer has a budget to spend on haircuts.
Each hairdresser offers haircuts from $x to $y.
The query should return all hairdressers that are appropriate for the budget of the selected customer.
There should be a yes/no button on the form to ignore or use this criterion.

Example 2 (this completely threw me off):

Each customer has a set of preferred services from a table (e.g. cutting,washing, coloring).
Each hairdresser offers certain services also based on this table (e.g. cutting,washing, coloring, drying).
The customer and hairdresser table use the services table and a multi combo box to select the services.
The query should return only hairdressers that offer some or none of the services wanted by the client.

Again, there should be a services yes/no button on the form to either ignore or include this criterion.

To clarify, the hard part for me is the query. I am fine with setting up the tables and the form. Just not sure how to implement something like "IF (ServicesCheckBox = -1, 'then use service criterion', 'ignore service criterion')".

Form Based Parameter Query With Multiple Controls Used For One Criteria

Nov 14, 2012

My form-based search mechanism uses controls to set the parameters for the query data source.

I have one field call quantity in stock. I could you a Between and And method to allow the end user to input the stock quantity they want.

HOWEVER, i would love it for the user to first select the Comparison Operator (e.g. > , <, >=, <=) from a combo box and then in an adjacent text box, enter the quantity.

The expression i entered in the query goes something like this.... Forms![frmSearch]![cboRange] & [Forms]![frmSearch]![txtQuantity]

When i try and run this, i get the message "THe expression is too complex to be evaluated".

Passing Multi Parameter Values To A Query

Aug 14, 2005

I have a query set up which needs to have different criteria at run time depending on values selected by the user. If no option is specified, I need to pick up all records with 'Nulls' in them else, if date is specified by user, I need to pick up all records with date > than specified date. The query is able to pick up the date value from an unbound text box in the form. I used the same field in the form and populated "Is Null" in the field and it does not work. How do I pass this as a paramater to the query from the form?
Is there a way around without setting up 2 sets of queries and reports?

Thanks,Priya :mad: :confused:

Queries :: Multi-parameter Select Query

Jan 12, 2015

I created a form that has 3 multiple drop-down selections that is supposed to select records from [TableName_1] based on those selections. I initially created the query using the query designer with actual "hard coded" selections to make sure it worked. When it gave me the expected records, I changed the criteria from the "hard coded" option to the input form's control reference [Forms]![FormName]![ComboName]. I did this one at a time and tested after each change.

After the first change, I got exactly what I expected.

After the second change, it seemed okay. (note: I put the criteria on the first criteria line in the query designer, not on the second line)

After the third change, I get the dreaded: The expression is typed incorrectly or is too complex to be evaluated....

Here is the SQL:

SELECT M_Lending_Institution.InstitutionName, M_Lending_Institution.GeoRegionID, M_Lending_Institution.SpecialtyID, M_Lending_Institution.SBA
FROM (SELECT M_Lending_Institution.InstitutionName, M_Lending_Institution.GeoRegionID, M_Lending_Institution.SpecialtyID, M_Lending_Institution.SBA FROM M_Lending_Institution) AS LenderSearchQuery
WHERE (((LenderSearchQuery.GeoRegionID.Value)=[Forms]![LoanSearch]![CmbPrefGeo]) AND ((LenderSearchQuery.SpecialtyID)=[Forms]![LoanSearch]![CmbSpecialtyArea]) AND ((LenderSearchQuery.SBA)=[Forms]![LoanSearch]![CmbSBA]));

And once this is sorted out, yes I want to be able to allow for all records to be returned if any of those fields is NULL. I've read a LOT of posts around this subject, but I can't seem to find anything that answers my question without jumping into advanced VBA code.

Multi Record/Query/Multi Table/Going Crazy Issues

Sep 7, 2007

I have spent the last couple of days trying to figure out how to make this work.

I have three tables.

tblIntakeMain
[IntakeMainID]

tblIncidentDetails
[IncidentdeatailsID]

tblPersonnel
[PersonnelID]

On the main form I use subforms to link tblIncidentDetails and tblPersonnel to tblIntakeMain. Both subforms can, and do, have many entries. This all works fine. What is not working is the search form I am using.

I am using Gromits most excellent Search Form. The problem is when I create a query, qSearch, to bring together the three tables I get a multiple records which makes the searches very confusing and near useless. Is there anyway around this? Is there something I am missing? Is there another search method I could use that would work in a similar way as Gromits? Please help before the Prozac runs out and I lose my mind--what little it left.

Multi Criteria Form Search?

Aug 17, 2007

Hi all:)

Has anyone ever come across an example of a form where you can carry out a multi criteria search which not only displays the results on a subform but when you select an item from that subform the details can be displayed in text boxes etc on the main form.
I have tediously searched this forum and the web but all search examples only display on a subform only, is it even possible if so has anyone found any examples or how would I go about achieving this

Thanks Jackie

Queries :: VBA And Query Criteria From Multi-Value Lists

Jul 29, 2015

I have been working with Access for some time managing some databases for my company. But now I have some problems making the database easier to use by automatically creating a Query based on different criterias.The code looks like this:

Sub Multi_value()
'Definitions
Dim strSQL As String
Dim db As DAO.Database
Dim qdf As DAO.QueryDef
Set db = Application.CurrentDb

[code]....

The problem is that the "Business Field.Value" is inserted into the Query-criteria with brackets which for some reason are not supposed to be there when I use the .Value-parameter instead of the "Business Field"-parameter.

Modules & VBA :: Form With Multi-criteria Searches / Uses Strings And Filters

Jan 23, 2014

I have a search form with blank fields tied to a table, four criteria search boxes, and a button to take the input from the search boxes, search the table, and populate the results on the form's blank fields. As of now, it works as long as all four criteria boxes aren't null.I used filters to achieve this, and here's the code that works as long as all four boxes are not empty. (My criteria boxes are as follows: a textbox called "Keyword" and three combo boxes called HRCombo, BuildingCombo, and RoomCombo, and the fields they're tied to are as follows: "Item Description" "HR Holder" "Building" "Room") My first line "Me.Filter = ..." was broken up to make it easier to view.

Code:

Me.Filter = "[Item Description] Like " & Chr(34) & Me.Keyword & "*" & Chr(34) & "
AND [HR Holder] = '" & Me.HRCombo & "'" & " AND [Building] = '" & Me.BuildingCombo
& "'" & " AND [Room] = '" & Me.RoomCombo & "'"
Me.FilterOn = True
Me.Requery

I need it to be able to do the search no matter which combination of criteria boxes have input. Someone recommended using if statements to do the following: Create four strings, one for each criteria box. Use 4 if statements to check if the box is null - if it is null, assign an asterisk to its string, and if its not null, assign the value I used for the above Me.Filter statement to each box's string. Then, use Me.Filter and concatenate the four strings at the end. Here's the code I used for this, and, with my limited knowledge, I can't get it to work.

Code:

Dim StrA as String, StrB as String, StrC as String, StrD as String
If Me.Keyword is null then
StrA = "*"
else
StrA = [Item Description] Like " & Chr(34) & Me.Keyword & "*" & Chr(34)
End If

Trouble With Between Criteria In Parameter Query

Oct 8, 2007

In MS Access 97 I have a basic query based on a single table. When I use "Between [Start Date] and [End Date]" as the criteria in a date field it returns incorrect records.

It works correctly on date fields that are not calculated but not on the date field that is calculated. If I type in the actual dates in the criteria (instead of the prompts) it returns the correct records.

Is there a solution to this behaviour? I need the users to be able to input the dates.

Thanks.

P.S. I have tried using the base query as a subquery but I still have the same issue in the second query based on the subquery.

Queries :: Using Like Criteria In Parameter Query

Aug 10, 2013

It is possible to create a parameter query in Access that will search for records that match the parameter entered by the user AND contain all other records that have that value plus other text.

For instance you may want Access to return all records that begin with the letter Q.

To do this you need to enter the following expression into the criteria row:

Like [Find records beginning with:] & "*" Or Is Null

The user can enter a Q and the criteria concatenates the wildcard character * to this parameter value, to find all text strings that begin with a Q.

By also using Or Is Null in the criteria the user can enter a blank value into the parameter query to return all records, even if this field is blank.

But how do I search if i want all the records with John anywhere in the field???

Passing Criteria To Append Parameter Query Through VBA

Dec 6, 2007

Hello Everybody,

I have an append query that contains a parameter [PTIdent] under the field named PTID. I would like to be able to set the parameter through VBA from a control on a form eg Form!PTID

I use the following code as normal
Private Sub Command19_Click()
On Error GoTo Err_Command19_Click

Dim stDocName As String

stDocName = "apNewPres"
DoCmd.OpenQuery stDocName, acNormal, acEdit

Exit_Command19_Click:
Exit Sub

Err_Command19_Click:
MsgBox Err.Description
Resume Exit_Command19_Click

End Sub

Is there a way within this code to do this? I realise I could set the form criteria within the query itself. However I wanted to be able to use this query from multiple forms.

Thanks for any help

Queries :: Parameter Value Prompt In Query Using (Like Or Is Null) Criteria

Mar 29, 2015

I had an issue with writing LIKE statements in query criteria yesterday [URL]....

The answer they gave worked perfectly when I only used a single table in the query. But as soon as I did an INNER JOIN with two other tables, now I get parameter value prompts when I open frmSearch, and instead of seeing ALL my records when the controls are left null, I get only the first record in the table.

Here's the SQL of the query, can you point out what I messed up? NOTE that this SQL was 'written' by Access.. as I used the Query builder to set all the 'Like or Is Null' statements, then clicked SQL and sorta formatted the code so I can see what I'm looking at (instead of superthick wall-o-code):

Code:
SELECT tblPeople.name, tblPeople.num
FROM (tblPeople INNER JOIN tblAddresses ON tblPeople.name = tblAddresses.name)
INNER JOIN tblPets ON tblPeople.name = tblPets.name

[code]....

Basically, this is a searchable database of participants in a pet-adoption program, along with the participants' pets history and address history (hence the linked tables as opposed to additional columns in one single table for pets and addresses... there are more than one in some cases). The frmSearch allows a person to run quick searches based upon ANY item in the database, such as name, pets, addresses, pet age, pet type, county of residence, etc. I need to be able to pick ANY field on frmSearch and type a value, and have the qrySearch return records for ANY record's related column wherein any part of it matches what I typed.

The statements as written worked PERFECTLY right up until I added the INNER JOIN. Now I get a set of parameter value prompts for every field on frmSearch that's referenced in the SQL for EACH table I linked to tblPeople, and if I leave everything null and click Search, I want to see EVERY person, but I'm only seeing the very FIRST person in tblPeople.

Modules & VBA :: Parameter Query - Detect If User Has Not Entered A Criteria

Dec 12, 2014

I have a report that is fed by a parameter query. When a command button (Command23) is clicked a parameter box opens and the user enters a subsystem number. A report for that subsystem then opens.

I want to open the report with VBA and show a message if the user has failed to enter a subsystem number in the parameter box and just clicked OK.

The problem is I don't know how to refer to the parameter box and detect if it has been left empty before clicking OK. I first tried to use IsNull in an If statement with Command23.Value, but now realize it is the value in the parameter box I am after, not the "value" of Command23.

How can I change my code to detect if the parameter box has not been filled out?

Private Sub Command23_Click()
If IsNull(Command23.Value) Then
MsgBox "You did not enter a Subsystem", vbOKOnly, "No Criteria Entered"
Else
DoCmd.OpenReport "rptTESTInfoBySubsystem", acViewReport
End If
End Sub

Multi Table Form

May 24, 2006

Hi, I'm currently creating a performance review database for my team and I'm having a few issues.

I was wondering if there is any way other than making a multi table query to have multiple tables linked to a form. The reason for this is because the performance review has 5 sections and I made a table for each section and would like data entered into the form to be entered into those tables.

What I first tried was making a multi table query with all the fields from all 5 tables. Then when I am done updating the values in the form to that 1 table with all the fields I run an append query to populate the data into all the other tables. The issue with this way is it's a manual task and with autonumber on my tables I have to delete all the values from the other tables and then run the append else I have duplicates from when the data was entered last time. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Multi-table Form Problem

Jun 16, 2005

I'm creating a database that contains some information spread out over multiple tables. In order to enter information into the database there are a couple forms that the user can access to enter all the information, and these data will be placed in the appropriate tables. I am also creating a form that will be used for data-viewing and simple editting purposes. This form will contain data from many different tables and viewed all together in the same form.

I created this second, more complicated form (more complicated because it contains more tables all viewed on the same form) and editting and adding new data doesn't work. It won't let me type in the fields. I've narrowed down the problem to the combination of three tables and I will explain the nature of the relationships of these tables.

First of all, I have a table the contains general person information. These needed to be broken down in to sub-groups, employee and contract. Each of these two sub-groups of people has their own specific fields that need to be entered, so I created three tables. The first table, person, has general person fields. The other two tables, employee and contract, contain fields that are specific to their person type and a foriegn key referencing the associated person information.

My problem is that, on the more complicated form, I wanted to put all the fields related to that entry. So a contract person would have all the fields filled in for the general person, the fields for contract person would be filled in, and then the fields for employee would be blank. Now, I'm sure there is a better way to do this (for example gray out the employee fields when a contract person is viewed, or hide fields for employee etc.) but I'm new at VB and that seemed more complicated.

If anyone has any ideas on what the problem might, or how I could resolve this, that would be amazing. Thanks in advance
