Continuous Form - How To Display Info From Tables With One To Many Relationships
Apr 25, 2006
Hi everyone,
I've tried several different things to get around this problem and have found out a lot about what won't work!
Basically I am building a HR database. The main table is M_CandidateDetails and the primary key is CandidateID. This is a foreign key in all of the other tables: MCandidateEducation, MCandidateEquipExp, MCandidateSector. (I've attached a screenshot of the relationships.)
Goal:
What I want to do is create a continuous form with one record for each candidate. A record will show all of the info pertaining to a candidate. The form is to be used to for searching and filtering candidates.
Attempts..
First I tried creating a query to combine all of the information. (I've attached a screenshot of the query). The only problem with that was if joe bloggs had worked in 3 different industry sectors there would be 3 records for him. (I did have problems with the query not being updatable - solved that though by using the Dynaset property of the form)
Next I tried basing the form only on the M_Candidates table and using listboxes to display the information from the many-side of the various tables. But that didn't work as you cannot use an unbound control on a continuous form.
Then I tried putting in subforms instead of listboxes but you can't use subforms on a continuous form.
My current database is in need of an upgrade. Currently (view image), as you can see (its the only form), each student entered into the database can only have one course. However, I would like to add the ability for students to have multiple courses. my problem isn't so much how does the database user enter in the new course for the student. This can be achieved with another form. However, I am struggling on how I would display these multiple course, in a user friendly way, on a form. What controls do i use? I'm thinking a table control would be suitable (much like an excel spreadsheet) as it would allow show all the courses/ edit a specifc field if required. However i do no believe access 2010 has this control.
Access 2007: I have a continuous form which, when it opens, uses code to display alternating colors... I need to set a default 'alternate' colour, and I want to find the code to use for Light Grey - on the design of a form, the color to use on a control would be #903C39 but when I try to set that as my default colour in the code it doesn't like it! I can use vbRed, vbBlue, vbYellow, etc, and that works perfectly but I can't find a vbLightGrey
I have some images stored in a SQL Table which is linked into Access. These images have to be stored in the database as I also reference them on other platforms (Android, Web etc).
In my Access programme I need to display a continuous form / report showing each image. Now, good old Access cannot display multiple images stored in the database on a continuous form. It can only do this if it is referencing the path to the image.
When the user views the form they will only see about 12 images at a time. I thought of a workaround which is to write the database images back to file to a local temp directory when the user loads the form. The user would be happy to wait for say 10 to 15 seconds whilst the form loads.
However, I cannot find an efficient algorithm to write the images back to a file. The one I am using is a BinarytoString algorithm by motobit which is fine for very small images, but anything over 100kb (which is still pretty small) it goes sooooo slow.
How to quickly write an image stored as a long binary in an Access DB back to a file? Or do I need to crack open my Visual Studio and write some C# DLL to use instead...?
I have continuous form in Access 2010. I highlight selected record. Now I would like when user will select record, that record will display button to give ability user delete it. For not selected records button not visible and disable. How to display button only in selected record in continuous form?
The database I'm working on is coming on nicely, thanks to some valuable help from this forum. But I've got a couple of new problems that I just can't seem to get my head around. Really hope someone out there can help!
So...
I have two tables (well, there are more.. but there are two main ones with the important data on them). The first is a list of Customers (you know, the usual Name, contact, telephone etc...). The second is a list of jobs for each customer.
After starting from scratch, I created a nice looking form wth control tabs that on one page shows you the customer information and on the second; the job history for that customer. I then have a third tab which lets you add new jobs. So I'm all chuffed because that is the basics of what I wanted it to do.
However, I need a hard copy of the job report to print out and give to an engineer to fill in or to print in future should a customer wish to see it.
Try as I might, the reports function didn't look as if it was something that could be "designed" the way I wanted it to look. So, I figured another form was in order.
I started by building a query which included all the fields from the two tables mentioned above in it; I.e. So it would pull up a Job Printout by a workorderID number. That way it would show all the company info PLUS the detail of that one particular job.
Problem is this: I can see from the query in table view that the Jobs are listed; but alongside them is a straight listing for all the companies in the database. Basically, the Company who received the job in question is not being shown by the query.... if you follow me. (Apologies if I'm explaining this like a fool).
Question 1 then... is how do I fix this? Is this something to do with these arcane relationships things?
Question 2: How do I create a button to print that one "form" by workorder ID.
Question 3: Did I do the right thing by using a "form" or is there a better way to create a "report" for printing that can be formatted the way I want (with logos and stuff)
On the Flow Meter Form Info is listed specifically for each Flow Meter.
I would like to bring some of the information from the Contacts table on this form.
For Instance if I am on Meter 1T-02 I would like for it to associate that meter number with the name of the customer thats already on the form, then look up that customer's name in the contact table and bring over that customer's contact information.
I built this database over a year ago and it has been a long time since I have worked with the design of it, therefore I am a bit rusty.
I have a form that I need to turn into a table. The table will be updated each day with new information but I dont know what to do to keep the previous days info. I have attached the form ....
I have a continuous form that is using a select query to populate all of the bound controls. The drop downs and text boxes are displaying the values from the correct places. But, the form is not updating in the places I expected.
The select query that is being used to populate, combines information from 3 tables.'TimeEntries' table (the one that I want records to be updated in). This holds employee ID, and numeric values for Project Name and Project Task.
'ProjectInfo' table (nothing should be updated here). This table holds other details about the project (ex. Project Name) that is used to populate a combo box. 'ProjectTasks' table (nothing should be updated here either). This table holds details about project task (ex. Task Description) that is used to populate a combo box.
The issue I am having is that when records are updated on the form, they are adding records to all 3 tables that are a part of the query, instead of just updating the time entries table.
Record Source (form) = Select Query "EmployeeTimeEntry"
Hello once again, I am wondering how I can display information on a form that is not of the same record source without using a subform.
Right now, I have a form setup with qryAll as the record source which provides the information to a listbox i have setup on the form. When I select something in this list box, I want to display information related to it from a table based on a CenterID. Is this possible to do? I won't need to edit the values, I just need to display them into a textbox or something. Jared
I want to create a country info database. For example, Qatar (country) and the Driving info required when driving in qatar and the visa info required.
I would like a form with drop down options and when i selected which country and then driving or visa, at the bottom it would display the specific info based on my selection in a memo field lets say.
Please see attached pic. When I put the focus in some fields, the dividing line is chopped. In other fields, it's not. All controls are identical in format. If I copy a control which doesn't do this, and paste & replace one which does, the two controls simply swap their behavior.
Does anyone know why this happens and how I might prevent it?
Im sure this must be easy to do (but cant do it myself...)- how do I set a continuous form subform to display the last record when a new main form record is opened? Whatever I do, the continuous subform displays the first record and I have to scroll down to get to a new record, which is getting tedious.
I have buttons that enable and disable editing/adding information on a continuous form.
When you click add the form then is set to allowadditions and shows you the * record. Is it possible to have that display at the top of the list instead of the bottom? If not, what would be the best method to move the focus to the new record when someone clicks add?
I have a form with cascading combo boxes pulling from a table. They work perfectly, no worries. My problem now is if I do not enter information in every combo box (i.e. only two out of four combo boxes), how can I still run the query and get the appropriate information?
For example (these are my combo box titles in order):
Product Type Customer Contract #
I don't want to necessarily look by Contract # all the time, but sometimes just by the general Product and Type to get a larger view. How do I set up expressions/criteria in my query to accurately produce that information? Right now it just produces a blank query table if I don't fill out all the boxes.
I've tried a couple of expressions with "isnull" criteria, but I must be doing it incorrectly.
I currently have two different excel spreadsheets linked to access 2003. The first few columns are very similar with similar headings. What i have now is a form displaying the data from one spread sheet (Engine Status), and another form displaying the data from the other (Engine Health).
As I am very new to access is there a way that i can link the two spreadsheets together and display all the data on one single form. I would like a combo box to find the required serial number (tail number) and once the serial number is selected the data from both spreadsheets will be displayed.
The spreadsheets i have to work with are of set standard for ease to input data from numerous other sources. I have attached examples of the two spreadsheets with the headings that are the same between the two although i have attached these to a single work book in reality they are seperate work books.
What i would like is for a combo box to display the Tail number then have single boxes to display core serial numbers across the form in order of position, then all the other data associated with that core serial number displayed in seperate boxes below the core serial number. I hope this is possible as it will prevent a lot of toggling between forms.
I have a continuous subform which queries a table of attachments. I'm using Access 2007 but not using the Attachment datatype; this DB will grow considerably and I don't want to waste precious space by filling it with bulky files. So instead, I have code which makes a copy of the attachment and adds the hyperlink (to the copy) to the table instead.
Now - I want to add a control to the subform to display an icon / image reflecting the file type of the attachment (Word doc, Excel s/s, PDF etc.)
But not sure how to go about it.
I was thinking I could use FileSystemObject.GetFileExtension at the point in the code where the attachment is added, and add a new field to my attachments table (i.e. translate "*.xls*" to "Excel", etc.) Then store / embed a handful of images for the core types I would expect and use an image control on the subform to display the image based on the value of that field.
But is that even possible / feasible?
Or, is there a handy API which can retrieve the icon associated with a file type based on what has been installed on the local machine (even if there is, there's still the problem of setting up the image control to display the appropriate icon specific to each record...)
Or, is there another control available which would be better suited to something like this than an Image control?
I have a form where I am entering orders. For this, there is only 1 item and 1 customer per order. The Order_Table is the 'general' of the form. However, I want a Customer_name dropdown on the form, and return data to 'display' on the form (but capturing and ONLY storing the Customer_no), once the user makes a selection.
Additionally, in the same vein, I want to have an Item_name list, where the user selects one from the listing, and display (again, no edit) the name. Again, only want to store the Customer & Item numbers on the Order table. Here's the 'general' table layout (I've taken out what doesn't matter):
What I am trying to do is put a subform within a subform. The trouble is I want both forms to be continuous forms.
when I put the subform within a subform, access comes up with the following message:
************************************************** ******************** A form with a subform object cannot have its DefaultView set to Continuous forms.
You tried to add a subform to a form in design view. MSAcess will reset the property to Single Form. ************************************************** *********************
which it does my higher level form becomes a form only showing single records at a time whilst the subform is a continuous form.
I have 5 tables and 2 forms. The primary form is what I input all the information into (Tracking) and the other form is to update employee information (update form).
The "Tracking" form is where I add information to 4 of the 5 tables. Here is where I'm stumbling. Would it be more practical to just have 1 table and just expand the fields, or have the form put the information into the separate tables. Those 4 tables are Employee, phone, spotter and radio.
I'm wanting to keep a running tally of who doesn't turn in what equipment on what day.
It seems that there are a few different ways to get info from the tables when developing an applications that i know of:
1)queries 2)dao 3)ado 4)selects without any of the above
I lean towards the last 2 but I need to know this: is there any advantages in using ado as opposed just sql?
For instance i ran this sql:
Private Sub Command0_Click()
Dim SQL As String Dim strCriteria As String
strCriteria = Forms![form2]![Text1]
SQL = "SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE (((Table1.clinic)='" & strCriteria & "'))"
DoCmd.OpenForm "frmClinic" Forms![frmClinic].RecordSource = SQL End Sub
it worked fine. I could see how a beginner would prefer to use queries over sql but I would prefer to use sql in vba. I've read that dao is older and I should use ado instead. So that leaves ado vs. the way I displayed it in the above code. So which way should I go? If I'm over looking queries or dao in favour of ado/sql, just point out their advantages if you don't mind.
I am trying to get an email address from a table by choosing a employee number from a combo box...it is almost working, however, it is returning the employee number as opposed to the email address...here is the code I am trying to use:
Private Sub Combo0_AfterUpdate()
Dim myConnection As ADODB.Connection Set myConnection = CurrentProject.Connection Dim myRecordSet As New ADODB.Recordset myRecordSet.ActiveConnection = myConnection Dim mySQL As String
mySQL = "SELECT EmailName .*,[Employees] FROM EmployeeNumber"
I'm a genealogy nut and not so great at computers. I've got a report on cemeteries that gets things like a cemetery number, peoples names and tombstone information from one table. Got that working pretty well. I've got it to print the cemetery number in the detail header (there are 300+ cemeteries each with 1-100s of people in each). I want to take that number and use it in a different table to get travel directions and GPS for each cemetery.
I am very new to access and I am trying to create two tables called Customers and Orders.
The fields in Customers are: CustomerID (Primary Key), First Name, Last Name, Address.
The fields in Orders are: Order# (Primary Key), CustomerID, Product Purchased, Address.
There is a One to many relationship between CustomerID in the table Customers, to the CustomerID in Orders.
The problem I am having now is with the Address field.
GOAL: What I am trying to do is have the Orders table automatically get the Address from the Customers Table.
If that doesnt make sense, whenever I create a new Order, I want to enter the customerID, and have it get the Address data from the Customers table automatically put into the proper field in the Orders table.
I just can't figure out how to solve my next problem. What I need to do is to make a query showing all the country's next to germany(nr.5) with their capitals. There are three tables which I can use, nr.1 showing the country_id's with their "neighbour country's", nr.2 showing the name of the country's with their capital_id's and nr.3 showing the name of the capital with their corresponding country-id. Is there anybody who could help me with this problem, or has some suggestions? If you find this message unclear, i would love to e-mail you the tables. As i am dutch my english isn't that good. Thanks in advance
