Convert Text To Number In Multivalue Table Field Without Data Loss
Oct 21, 2012
I have a multivalue text field called "Groups" that is generated through a relationship with another table called "Comments". When I set this up I left the field as a text field when it should have been a number field, and now I can't use the database with sharepoint, because the field needs to be a number field.
My Question is there a way to convert it without loosing all my data, as there are over 5000 records?
My Table with the multivalue field is called "Contacts", the field is called "Groups".
I tried update and append queries but I must be doing something wrong....
I need to convert my text data to a number but when I convert using the VALUE function or use "format cells" to the numbers category, I loose the leading zeros. I need to keep them for sorting purposes.
As the title says, i have an identifier field which combines two codes eg. AAAAAA/1234.
I am using a query to extract the number part, however when i try to link to another query it says 'type mismatch'.
I assume that this is because the main query is based on a table where [ShipID] is numeric and the extracted data is based upon a underlying table where [PackageID] is a text field.
I am trying to create a table for income and expense [catergory] and would like the amount being entered into the [amount] field to have a negative or positive value on entering based on the category chosen.
so in my table I have
[catergory] which is chosen from a look up table ( which is either an INCOME or EXPENSE ) [amount] which is entered in the next field ( which has to return a positive or negative value based on the catergory choosen upon entering the data)
I would like to go one step further and indicate this negative value in red is possible in my FORM.
I have a table with the following fields: Tool Text Tool_ID Text Description Text
The Tool_ID field holds a number if the tool provides a tool id. However, if the tool doesn't provide a tool id, the text "No tool ID given" is automatically placed into the field. Therefore, it needs to remain a text field for this reason and others that are too long to go into. Anyway, I created a query that pulls only one specific tool which always provides a tool ID. Therefore, the results of my query will always have a number in the text field "Tool_ID".
Question: Is there a way to convert the text field to a number field within the query?
I want to have a question in my query that does not get answered by date but by a concatenated field named "MonthYearPeriod".
We always forget how many days in a month. But we remember the month and year. So for say a Sales Range of Nov 2006 to Oct 2007, we prefer to respond to the criteria question as: 11-2006 and then 10-2007.
FiscalMonth and FiscalYear are both Long Integer number fields in the table.
Query field concatenated: MonthYearPeriod: [FiscalMonth] & "-" & [FiscalYear]
criteria line: Between [Month-Year START DATE] And [Month-Year END DATE]
However, i get other crazy time periods. So this is not working. Maybe on the Query field box, I need extra coding to convert the number to text?
I assume that a Dash sign between the month and year are fine. Thanks
I just started my project database on my subject ITM4. My Database is entitled PCExpress Inventory System. I would like to know how to input (Text) in a Field where the Data Type is (Number) just like the North Wind.
Table called "Products" Field 1= "Product ID" which is a text field (PK) but numbers are used (ie 1 -20) Field 2= Products -showing our list of 20 products
When I enter a new product, currently I have to look in the table to find the last ID used then use the next one available. I have created a form to be used for data entry to enter new products
What I am trying to do is :- 1, have the form open at data entry level but still able to scroll and see all records and 2, Have the form auto generate the next number available. For example, I have 20 products entered so when the form opens to enter a new product, the ID is automatically at number 21.
I wondered if its because the field is a text field or I am trying to insert the code in the wrong place.
I have a KidShop table that shows the Diagnosis for the person, there are 5 diagnosis fields because one person could have up to 5 Diagnosis and each field is a lookup from the diagnosis table.in the report they show up as the ID number not and not the text.
I inserted Diagnosis from the Diagnosis Table and a window popped up asking what Diagnosis from the Diagnosis table matched in the KidShop Table and gave the selection of Diagnosis 1 or 3 or 3 or 4 or 5. I could only select one and I selected Diagnosis1 in the KidShop table and that showed Diagnosis as text for the Diagnosis1 field but the other 4 diagnosis fields still show a number. I understand what that did but it does not give me the option to match Diagnosis 2,3,4,5 to diagnosis Table. If I changed the Data source for the other 4 to Diagnosis then only Diagnosis1 shows up it the other 4 fields which makes since.
I use an append query to insert this new record into the table EVENTS_MAIN.
I wish to set the start time and end time for all event days in hours and minutes. I will use these entries for displaying start time and end time for each event days, to calculate daily total hours and event total hours later on.
Therefore, I wish to create a query that will display event date 1, event date 2 and event date 3, based on the number of the EVENT_total_days field, so I can set the start time and end time for each day separately.
Is it possible to "convert" or "switch" the number of the days into number of records? Can a query convert a field value into number of records?
DLookup function. (this is for a stamp collection database).
On my form ("InventoryInput") I have a text box called "Catalog" for a numeric entry and a text combo box for selecting a "Country" in drop down list.
I want to query a table called "CatNameList" to get the "StampName" of the item (based on the entries of Catalog and Country) and populate that name in the text box. The fields in this table are called "StampName", "CatNumb" & "CName" respectively.
I have successfully placed the following expression in the control source of that textbox and able to populate the StampName I need based solely on the catalog number alone.
That express is : =DLookUp("StampName", "CatNameList", "CatNumb = Form![Catalog]")
So it will populate the "StampName" data to match the "Catalog" number entry just fine.
However, I need to add a second layer to incorporate the Country.
Example : There is a catalog "1" for "USA", and a catalog "1" for "Canada" but both have different "StampName".
I have been attempting to get that second piece added with no success. Here is the expression I have been trying to get to work :
Right now, the text box is just blank with the above expression. I thought it may be because there was no match found, but I have triple checked to ensure I have the spelling correct on the country name in both places.
Basically, I just need the dlookup to take the "catalog" and "country" off the form and match it to the "CatNameList" table fields of "CatNumb" and "CName" to give me "StampName" field back on the form.
Having problems getting dlookup to work in the control source field of a text box.
My form has fields : Catalog # (numeric value) and Country (drop down text selection).
I would like to query a table CatNameList for a name (text) if the catalog # and country find a match on the table. My field names on the CatNameList table are : Name, Number (to validate against the Catalog # entered on the form) and CName (to validate against the Country drop down on the form).
I am successfully able to populate the name from the CatNameList table on my form using lookup of the catalog # using this :
However, I will eventually have several catalog numbers that will be identical in the table CatNameList, thus why the country is important as the second criteria to be added into the dlookup.
I have tried for a few hours unsuccessfully to add the second portion to my dlookup.
This is what I have currently (not working) that I have been playing with, I'm sure I'm missing a quote mark, & or something simple.
I'm a network manager at a school running 5 windows server 2003 servers (3 of which are DCs) and 350 windows XP clients. Network speed and traffic is excellent and most of the time the only software used is microsoft office. Most computers run office 2003 but some have office xp.
Here are a few scenarios of the problems:
Scenario 1 A teacher looks back at some work of a student who left a year or so ago to find all work as expected however all access databases are empty (no tables, forms etc. Just blank database files)
Scenario 2 A student says they were working on an access file only moments ago and everything vanished (resulting in a blank database file). They claim the file has been there for weeks, and has had data in it for weeks. They have been working on it a number of times a week. When I look through the backups, the database file exists but is empty on every occasion.
This problem occurs over 4 ICT suites (120 computers) at random and is always a different user. There seem to be no patterns. We get the Scenario 2 problem about once or twice a month, although sometimes a lot more and sometimes a lot less.
Any ideas or comments?! (I need some response even if it's not very helpful!)
In a query I would like to extract the last ten years. This is what the data looks like:12/13 (Data type = text)(Short for 2012/2013 which actually represents 7/1/2012 to 6/30/2013.)
I am able to extract the "12" and turn it into the general number 2012 using: ("20" & Left([TAXYR],2))*1..But how can I convert that to the data type-date so I can include those records in the past ten years from todays date? I was trying to use DateAdd but I think the problem is the data type and where converting to date gives me "1905" or "9/##/1905." I get why it does that, but is there a workaround? Maybe adding 39,785 days?? (2014-1905)*365
I have a A2007 database that is split to a shared server that is experiencing unidentified network problems. While working in the front-end users receive the following message periodically:
Quote:Your network access was interrupted. To continue close the database and then open it again. If the users are working in a form including queried data, the data is lost and the file crashes. This happens even though the front-end is on the user's computer and no tables are currently being queried. My question is why must the network be stable even though the database is split and queries are not occurring? The form's record source is a table though. But even with this the record source connection is not needed until the form is closed.
I use a memo field in a form. This memo field is used to store "steps" for doing something.
To keep things neat, I use ENTER between the steps so there is a blank line between each. This looks good in the form, however... I export this information (from the table) to a CSV/text file to use online. My online script requires that each record occupy only one line. But, the exported file has separated the "steps" into multiple lines just as it appears on the form.
I would like to use the HTML tag <BR> to separate the line feeds in the CSV file. I can enter these in the FORM instead of pressing ENTER, but then the form looks bad - harder to read.
In 2002, I set up a database with Access 97 which included a table with a memo field. Through the years, the database has moved from Windows XP and Access 97 to Windows 7 and Access 2007. Recently, the memo data has been difficult to edit (the display will move away from the cursor, or a new record will be inserted).
It appears to be logically straightforward to convert the memo data into multiple text fields as the memo field can be parsed for dates of entry.
Date of Birth (DOB) field etc. in one program are text - how do I make another file with the same data into number fields for Date of Birth field etc? When I copy data to file that has number fields the 09252004 is changed to 9252004. Can I get reports with the correct Date of Birth in them by moving data from text file to number file?
There is data entered monthly in file and formula has been set up for January, February etc as ---quarter: Int(([month]-1)/3)+1. I would like formula for the fiscal year for April to be counted as month 1, May - month 2, June as month 3, July as month 4, August as month 5, Sept as month 6, October as month 7, Nov as month 8, Dec as month 9, Jan as month 10, Feb as month 11 and March as month 12.
I'm currently working on a project within access which will allow users to select/input information in a form which will then save to the database.
What I need is to create a button on the form which will allow you to convert the data collected from the form to a custom text file template.
(Or maybe the last row added to the database. - although this may cause errors. Example: the form information doesn't save which will in turn create a text file with the data collected from the previous job)
The custom text file template should have a sentence description followed by the value recorded from the form.
Example:
1 configuration type: (data from form)
2 model type: (data from form)
3 Poc: (data from form)
And so on.
So in summary - I would be to use the form to collect the desired information which will save to the database.
Once actioned, a custom text file should be populated with the collected information (with specific data placement as per the example above)....
I've a question that is teasing me. How would I create a multivalue/multiple answer field in access 2002. P'se forgive if this question has been asked before. Thanks in advance,
