Converting A Percentage Field From A Text File
Dec 31, 2007
I have a text file delimited and uploaded the information to a new Access Table. One field "MarketValue" has a number followed with a percentage (i.e. 100%, 54%, etc..), however it converts as a text column.
How can I convert the column to a TRUE percentage field representing the value originally imported.

The calculated field converts all percentage marks perfectly fine with grades except 100 which returns to a stupid "E" . I've been trying all sorts and now give up.
Code:
Grade:IIf([Percentage]<20,"U",IIf([Percentage]<30,"G",IIf([Percentage]<40,"F",IIf([Percentage]<"50","E",IIf([Percentage]<60,"D",IIf([Percentage]<70,"C",IIf([Percentage]<80,"B",IIf([Percentage]<90,"A",IIf([Percentage]<100,"A+")))))))))

I have a CSV file and want to convert it in a text format with some filtered data and with some formatting. This is an everyday task for me. So I made a table and imported the data in to it by the command :
DoCmd.TransferText acImportDelim, "fo Import Specification", "fo", FileName:="C:UserswelcomeDesktopfo.csv", HasFieldNames:=True
Actually I have a column "SERIES", contains various series like "EQ", "BE", "DR", "BZ", "D1" and so on. And one more column with the dates having 4 / 5 current months dates and one next months date and one next to next month's date. And every date has got several thousand records.
now the issue is that : After importing these several thousand records, I want to export it but with a specific date and with a specific series.
The other thing is that, these dates change every month so if hard coded, the problem will occur the next month.
I use this code for export :
DoCmd.TransferText acExportDelim, "NewFnoSpec", "fnoquery", "C:UserswelcomeDesktopFO Output.txt", True
this code is working fine but when the month will change, the code won't work.
Can we have a date & series picker attached to this query, so it can export the records with the specified SERIES & DATE.
I tried putting a textbox on the form named TxtDate and in a Query ( Design mode ) under the date column, in criteria I have put [Forms]![Futures]![TxtDate] and after putting this line, the query becomes empty and no data is there.

Hi all,
I would very much appreciate help with this one. So thanks in advance if anyone can help.
I have a table which has a Text Field (it has to be, I'm afraid). The data is listed as follows:
5.6%
12.23%
2.45%
etc.
I need to use these values to multiply other figures in queries. I have tried FORMAT and various other ways in the query to convert the data, but to no avail. All I get as a result is an ERROR. Anyone got any ideas?

I am trying to add a percentage sign (%) after a number I get from a table, thus the number 1,5 should display 1,5% and NOT 150%.
I am using the Format Property of the text field.
I tried #,##% which converted the value to a percentage (1,5 became 150%) Then I tried #,##"%" and #,##\% Access ignored both and changed the value in the property field to #,##% Using the Format function is not an option because it is a bound field which should be editable.

I am in the process of changing over a text field to a memo field to generate more space (in 5 different databases  ) Thanks to all the good info on several searches of this forum, I am pretty clear on how to do that.
The question is... when I convert a field that already has information in it, will I lose the current information?
TIA,
Darnys

Hi,
Can anybody help me ?
I've a case where ms access displays oracle's numeric field as text where msaccess is linked to oracle. The possible reason could be when we don't specify precision in declaring the filed in oracle table, default precision is 38 which ms access cannot hold. So, it(driver) converts this to text field. But this is with MSORCL32.dll(microsoft driver for oracle). Is there any other possible reason that will result this behavior?
The following are the configuration details:
1.Oracle 9i on Unix server.
2.MSAccess on Windows XP.
MSAccess holds linked data of Oracle server.
Thanks Inadvance.

I am trying to convert my access database to a .mde file. However, I am getting an error message stating that my database is too large to be converted. It suggest that I export the database as an .mde database instead. I am trying to lock this database so that user cannot get to the design and the codes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if I have to, how do I export the .mdb database to a .mde one. I am currently using access 2003. Thanks

A group in my company has, for quite a while now, used a spreadsheet template to capture information needed for customer hard output. Someone built a page, with the less-than-a-dozen required cells in the appropriate places and a set print area, for printing the information. After they enter the information and print the page, they save the excel file. They have been doing this for quite a while now, and the number of files they have on their shared drive is staggering... and the method they using for naming conventions and cataloging them is almost beyond comprehension.
As they do indeed refer back to these files quite a bit, I am wondering if it possible to import the required cells of information from this mass of excel files, all of which are formatted and laid out the same, to an access table. I have never considered this before and have no idea how to start or whether it is even possible. I did a search on "import" but no results match what I am considering here.
To clarify one thing about these files: The information is not contiguous. It is spread all over... C6, E12, F45, J5, etc. They tried to build the form in excel so that it would print in the format they needed.
Thanks for all your help!!

Hi,
I'm importing the contents of lots of text files using a combination of a loop and DoCmd.TransferText.
This works fine and I can get the contents of several hundred files in a few seconds. The files are called 1.dbb, 2.dbb... and each has an associated image file, 1.bmp, 2.bmp... etc. After the import I move the files to a new folder.
I need to create a link to the bmp file but this information is not included in the text file so I need to rely on a field which contains the file name.
How can I populate a field at import time to include the name of the imported file?
Anyone give me a clue please.
Regards,
Bernard D

I have a query that has clients sorted in the row area and a column from my table that is set up as text but only has yes/no options for the data. I have a pivot table that counts the yes's and counts the no's and finds a grand total; however, I want to be able to find the percentage of pass's given the grand total. I'm able to do this in Excel and was wondering if it was possible in Access.

I have set the format of a text box (named: scrILS) to percentage. It shows on the form as 0.00%
When I try to run calculations off of it like: = [scrILS]*[totBuysFYDP1], it throws this error: #TYPE!
It seems as though the textbox is keeping it as text for the percent sign "%" is preventing any calculations against it... here's the strange part... it doesn't happen initially when I open the form... the calculations work and I get no error, but I have code that recalculates everything based on values picked in a list box... on the requery I get the error.
When I look at the watch frame for that control it shows the scrILS value as:
"00.0%" not 00.0%... any thoughts on this?
I attempted to just take the thing as a string and use a replace function against the "%" then calculating... that works, but then the initial form load throws the error.
Seems like I am missing something in the property settings, but I don't know what. Is there something that forces the format value, setting percentage as a number vs. text?... I thought that was just part of the format setting...no?

I am creating a employee db where the pic of the employee is displayed. The pic of the employee is currently stored in a folder using the employee ID as the file name, and the link to the pic file is stored in the employee table. The pic is displayed via an "on current" event of the employee form. I would like to be able to aquire a pic directly from a digital camera into the folder and have it available for the employee display form. I am not sure how to do it as the link to the pic file must be automatically stored in the employee table associating it with the employee info.
At present, I am thinking of capturing the pic from the digital camera into a Temptable in the db and converting the image in the Temptable into a jepg file in the pic folder with the employee id as its file name. If I can do this, I am pretty much home free. Can someone please help. If not the method above, please directly me to another. Thanks

I am having some difficulties with a Date/Time Field. I am importing a | delimted text file into a table and the Date Field is resulting in a Type Conversion Error. In the raw text file, the Date Field has the following Format (example): 01/03/2013 03:11 PM
My import Spec is as follows:
File Format: Delimited
Field Delimter: |
Language: English
[code]....
The only thing I can think of, is that the mix of Leading Zeros in the Time AND AM/PM is causing a problem. But, I do not see a way to address this with an import spec. The odd thing is that if I import the DateOpened Field as Text, THEN change the DataType to Date/Time AFTER import, then save the table, it recognized/converts the DateOpened Fields correctly.I'd LIKE to get the import spec correct (I have to update twice daily), But, barring that, if I could import as Text then build a Macro that would:
1) import text file(s)
2) change certain fields datatypes to Date/Time
3) Save Table(s)
That would suffice. I could then use VBS (and perhaps windows scheduler) to run the macro when needed.

I have a file that I need to import on a regular basis. There are two different issues with the import:
1. the first digit in the file indicates if it is a record I want to keep. In this case a 1 indicates a repair record and an 8 indicates it is just information such as email, contact info etc.
2. I have a field in the file that may change the import specifications
For example:
If the record is a Non wheel repair then column 167 is a 50 character description
If the record is Wheel repair then column 167 is a 28 character description and the remaining 22 characters are broken down into 10 different fields
So I need to do the following
1. Read the first character in the line and determine if it is a number 1 and if not discard it
2. Read a field in column 109 that is two characters long and if it says it is a wheel repair the import will break column 167 -216 down to the appropriate 11 fields and if it is a non wheel repair it will import columns 167 - 216 as one big description field.
I have used the import specifications with Access but it seems this will have to be done in code in a module or something and I am not very good with VB. (only know the basics)
One other issue is I have dates in the file that are 130225 and 1302 (so full date and then Year/Month) if i take out the / date separator in the import spec the full date works but the Year/Month doesn't.

I wondered if someone could help.
I am using the Val () Function to convert a text field to number within a query which still gives me a text output.
P.S I do not have permissions to change within table as using Access as a front end to SQL via link Tables.
