Deleting Duplicates

Aug 1, 2006

I have created a table for product codes and prices. After importing data from Excel I have a LOT of duplicated records. So I set up a query to search for 'distinct' records and then set up a delete query to delete anything that is not distinct. The query seems to be setup correctly (I have followed the instructions from Access Help) - but then when I try and run the query I get the message 'Could not delete from specified tables' - Is this a permissions issue? And if it is, where do I set up the permissions for the database? Thank you any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Deleting Duplicates

Nov 14, 2004

I 've created a query using the access wizard that finds duplicate records. It works fine. But then I would like to delete the duplicate records and keep just one(the first) . The problem is that the duplicate query returns the amount of duplicates found, not WHICH are they so I can delete them. Is there any way to alter the duplicate query , or to create a delete query using the duplicate query to achieve this? Or any other idea? Thank you in advance

Deleting Duplicates Query.. With A Twist

Jun 17, 2005

Hi,

Been reading the forums for a while now. Thanks to all you knowledgable people out there! Been a huge help in learning this program.

Here's a question that stumped me...

I have a table that is about 90,600 entries long with 4 fields per record.

Now here's the issue:

Approximately 25,000 of these entries are duplicates - based upon TWO of the fields.

SO we have:

Field1 Field2 Field3 EntryDateField

if Field1 and Field2 Match, I want to delete the record that has the OLDER entry date.

any ideas how I might accomplish this?

Thanks!!!

J

Queries :: Deleting Duplicates Without Primary Key?

Nov 4, 2013

I bounced into a big problem with Access 2010 where I cannot seem to be able to remove duplicates from a table containing millions of entries midway through a series of queries.

The table is formed like this:

Date - Serial Number - Reading 1 - Reading 2 - Reading 3
30.7.2013 - 1122334455 - 12345 - 987654 - 654321
30.7.2013 - 1122334466 - 12345 - 987654 - 654321
29.7.2013 - 1122334455 - 12210 - 987654 - 643210
29.7.2013 - 1122334455 - 12210 - 987654 - 643210
29.7.2013 - 1122334466 - 12344 - 986013 - 453213

As you can see, there are some rows which contain exact duplicates and some are a bit different. I wish to remove those fields with exact duplicates and only the duplicated fields. Running "Find duplicates" in Access gives me about 250,000 rows with such data.

I've tried a few options already:
- I cannot use the date as primary key as there are several serial numbers. I cannot use serial numbers as primary key, because there are several dates. Using reading value as primary isn't an option either.
- Microsoft says I should mark all duplicate values with an x and then make a delete query to get rid of all the x-marked rows. For 250,000 duplicates, that's a bit too much manual 'x-ing'.
- If I do a delete query using the Find Duplicates query as a base, it removes all 250,000 entries from that table, instead of just the 125,000 which had a duplicate elsewhere in the table.
- If I make a query which identifies duplicate data and gives me just one row for each duplicate, the delete query still deletes both entries from the original table.
- I could make a new query which would have only unique values using Totals as criteria (for instance, using First for the Date-column). However, this still leaves the duplicate values in the original table. Note that this database is already 800 MB large and new data is imported once a week, for the next decade or so. I cannot have a table get duplicates every week and leave it there.
- If I make a macro which would create the unique values table first and then deletes the old table, what happens next week when I try to import new readings? I would need to make a new macro each time I try to import new data as the table names change. Or is there a way to first run the unique numbers out, then replace the original table with the new one? With a 800MB database, this would put me dangerously close to the 2GB size limit. I wouldn't be able to use this as a part of a macro, as the database would have to do Compact & Repair each time it deletes the original table, midway through a longer series of queries.
- Having duplicates removed from the original import isn't an option either, as it comes in as a overriding excel sheet for the past 3 months, once a week.

As you can see, it's quite a pickle getting the duplicates out of the original table. This is just a small part of a very long macro, which takes about 15 minutes to complete, but due to duplicates the database is getting way too large.

Find Duplicates And Create Table With Dates Of Duplicates

Feb 12, 2008

Hi this is my first post... so hi all :)

ok what i have is a table with contact details 900k plus

there are about 90k of which are duplicates.

this is the basic feilds that are important in this case.

Id, data_source, data_recived, data_code,

what i want is to have a table with unique records (no dups in data_code)

this table will look like this...

Id, data_code, Num_dups, dup1_source, dup1_date, daysbtw_Dup1_dup2, dup2_source, dup2_date, daysbtw_Dup2_dup3 ,dup3_source, dup3_date, daysbtw_Dup3_dup4 ,dup4_source, dup4_date,

I know there is no more than 4 dups of each record.

what i want from this is a table that will give me a record of how many dups for each record then all the dates that they were added and the date between each record entry.

if anyone can help it would be great .

thanks in advance.

Find Duplicates Different Than Duplicates Deleted

Dec 8, 2005

Hey, all! Thanks for helping, here is my situation.

I have a table with about 70,000 records that have duplicate Address field values. The rest of the field values for those records are different. When I do a find duplicate querry I get the result that 17,000 records have the same address. However, when I do the append qurrey as instructed here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209183 I get a total of only 600 records in the new table. I have tried deleting all of the indexes for both the new and old table, with no luck.

I'm using Access 2000 on XP Pro.

If anyone could help with this I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks

Changing From Duplicates OK To No Duplicates

Nov 1, 2014

I have an Access table with an indexed key that is currently set to duplicates OK. There are not supposed to be any duplicates in that field. But it is possible than a small number have crept through.

Two questions:

1. What would happen to those duplicate records if I changed the setting from duplicates OK to no duplicates?

2. Is there any way to ferret out those duplicate records first and change them manually? The table currently has 48000 records so it would be a pain to go through them page by page. (I know how to export them to Excel, where the dups can easily be found; I was just wondering if something could do it within Access.)

Deleting

Feb 21, 2005

I have a problem about deleting record from a form, it will be grateful if anyone can help me with this.

Here are my tables:
Par_tor: some personal details such as ID, name, phone NO., etc
Par_tion: the record of who has participated which activities.
Activity: name of the activity.

My problem is: the main form of the my form contains the stuffs in table Par_tor, and the subform contains the stuffs in Par_tion, so the user can view these participator's details and the activities they have participated.

In the main form, I also wanted to created a delete button to delete an entire record (including a participator's detail + his/her participation record) at once, but it didn't work since the participation was in the Par_tion table not in the Par_tor.

So is there any way that I can delete these records at once?

Deleting A Record With VB

Jun 15, 2005

Hi

I have a form with a "Clear Form" button on to allow the user to delete the record they are working on without updating the database. A question window pops up asking if they are sure they want to delete the record, if they answer yes the form will clear and re-load without updating the database.

The OnClick Event Procedure will not allow me to delete the data, it always saves. I've tried
DoCmd.SetWarnings False
If MsgBox("Are you sure you want to abandon changes to this record?", vbExclamation + vbYesNo, "LogBook 2002") = vbYes Then
DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdDeleteRecord
DoCmd.SetWarnings True
Else
DoCmd.SetWarnings True
End If
but I get the error "2046 - The command or action DeleteRecord isn't available now." Is there another way, a better way?

Deleting Records

Aug 4, 2005

I have two tables (same data but slightly different attribute structure) with a one-to-one relationship (the join field is "ID"). There are 69 matching records in these tables. How can I delete these matching records from table A, while leaving them alone in table B?

I'm confused because I brought both tables into a select query, created a join from ID to ID (within in the query's design view), and then added all fields from table A to the query. I then ran the select query and saw the 69 records from table A in the query's data view that I wanted to delete, highlighted all records and clicked delete. However, this action deleted the 69 matching records from TABLE B, not Table A!!! How is this possible? What should I do instead? Thanks.

A strange request but I hope someone can help with this one

I have a table (tbl_Econ) where I have to delete a specified number of records from a table. It does not matter which records as long as I delete the exact number

e.g On a form text box I enter the number or records to be deleted (e.g.6000).

The table (tbl_Econ) has 8000 records, so I have to delete 6000 records. I need to be able to do this automatically

Deleting Tables

May 11, 2006

I am Developing a simple VBA program for Access for my final year of my Degree and I have come up with a problem that I don’t seem to be able to fix.

I have create tables using SQL

SQL = "CREATE TABLE tblInvoiceLines" & _
"(InvoiceNo LONG, PartNo LONG," & _
"Quantity LONG)"

DoCmd.RunSQL (SQL)

Deleting this with the below code works,

SQL = ""
'This will delete the Invoice Line Table
SQL = "DROP TABLE tblInvoiceLines"
DoCmd.RunSQL (SQL)

But once I alter the table with the below code the Delete command doesn’t work, does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

SQL = "ALTER TABLE tblInvoiceLines " & _
"ADD CONSTRAINT fkInvoiceNo " & _
"FOREIGN KEY NO INDEX (InvoiceNo) REFERENCES " & _
"tblInvoices (InvoiceNo) " & _
"ON UPDATE CASCADE " & _
"ON DELETE CASCADE "

conDatabase.Execute SQL

Thanks

If this is possible, could you give me some ideas how.

Thanks in Advance.

Deleting Records

Jan 25, 2008

Hi,

how would i go about deleting a set of records? i can get a list of records together in a query taken from 4 tables and would need to, if necessary, delete a single line. not all information needs to be deleted from all 4 tables though? the info to be deleted would only be deleted from 1 or 2 tables being the last 2 in the relationship.

i guessed it might be an append query but im not too familiar with them.

any chance of a possible suggestion?

many thanks,

Deleting A Thread

An individual posted a new thread today (3/14/08) (believe it was in the General Section) asking for a help with a UDF that wouldn't process. He received one response, then I came in with another response which I later edited to include more info. Saved it, checked back to ensure it was what I wanted -- it was.

Closed the browser, shut down the computer. When I later reopened this site, the thread was missing entirely. Did a search on my recent posts -- it's not there.

I'm baffled -- how does a thing like that work?

Deleting Tables

Nov 17, 2004

In my program you are allowed to make backups of the current databases to an external file. It also allowes you to get the tables back from one of those files. At least it should.

I thought this wouldn't be a biggy. I thought I'd just delete my current tables and replace them with "docmd.tranferdatabase" acImport.

But the stupid thing wont let me delete its tables because they are connected to each other. Can I somehow delete the link before deleting them?

If so will the links be there again once I restore the tables from the backup?
Or do I need to reconnect them somehow to each other.

Or maybe another approach would be to import them without deleting the original ones. Thus the new ones get the same name of the original ones + "1" or something. Than I delete all records from all my original tables. And refill them with all the records from the new ones (the + "1"-ones) And delete the new ones. And if I would do that, would it be best to use AcImport or AcLink (from docmd.tranferdatabse)

Can I have some pro's oppinion on this plz.
