Disable Delete In Combo Box
May 18, 2005
On the form for the Addresses I have a Combo Box for picking a Country.
When I hit the Delete button while the cursor is in the box I get a Message saying:
'You cannot assign the Null value to a Variable that is not a Variant data type'
The box has 2 columns, CountryName (Text) and CountryID (number), the second is the bound column.
I tried to Set the Warnings off, catch the error in the After Update Event, but
nothing helps to get rid of the Error Message.
Is there a way to Disable the Delete button, while in he box?
Or is there a better solution?
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
Before I pose my question I would first like to applaud and thank this forum for the excellent and timely help it has provided me so far. The assistance I have received to date, from you as members, and via the search facility has been extremely helpful particularly as I am new to this type of stuff…
My question is this...
I would like to disable users from selecting the 'Edit - Delete Record' facility from my main form upon its load. From searching the various forums I found a method upon which to disable the whole 'Edit' menu but not the specific 'Delete Record' function. Please accept my sincere apologies if this has already been posted but I simply cannot find it readily via a standard/refined 'search'. It might be the fact that I am phrasing the question incorrectly?? I don't want to severely restrict my users by disabling/hiding the whole menu but would rather limit them to accessing this option via a password protected command button?
What I have found so far.
Private Sub Form_Load()
CommandBars("Menu Bar").Controls("Edit").Visible = False
End Sub
Any assistance/guidance would be very much appreciated
Kind Regards – Best wishes to all of the registered site members

I am basically making a form to streamline the processes and functionality of my database project, so basically it's just a form that runs queries.
However, whenever it runs an action query, it always brings up a yes or no prompt for whatever action it is doing. Is there any way to disable these prompts (i.e. default yes to everything) or is this just an annoyance I will have to deal with?
Thanks.

I would like to disable the shortcut, CTRL - which allows a user to delete a record. A user accidentally deleted a record while typing in an email address that had an underscore in the email address. While trying to type it she must have hit the CTRL key instead of the Shift key follow by the -. She noticed the delete confirmation, but not thinking, pressed enter and thus confirmed the deletion of the record.
Other than telling her to pay more attention, how can I disable the shortcut in Access 2013?I tried using the Application.OnKey "^-", "" but I continue getting the error method or data member can not be found

Hello,
I have been playing around to see if it is possible to operate a combo box as a one shot operation.
I.e you make a selection from the combo box then the combo box is disabled.
Only prob is that I can't figure out how to do it.
Possibly by using a message box to see if selection is correct, if Ok clicked
then data entered and comboboc.enabled = false?
Or can this not be done.

Hi Everyone,
I want to try to restrict the user not always changing the record, so i need a Disable combo box command. And i did try it by using "Name.Enabled = False" after user select the value from the combo box, but the program won't let me do that because of the record is on focus. So what can i do? I only have an idea of after the user select the value from cbo then jump the cursor immediately to the second column, but anybody can tell me how to do that?
Thanks alot!
Regard,
alex

I would like to have a combo box that doesn't show the drop-down arrow when the user selects it. You say, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the combo box?
Well, look. In a form I have a datasheet (in a subform) that only displays data, so it is locked from editing. Within the datasheet is a field that contains a combo box with a row source from a linked table, and the control source of that combo box is the primary key. Essentially I'm utilizing the combo box because it is smart, and allows me to display linked data: this combo box contains two columns, and I set the first column's width to "0" so that it would only display the field I want. I didn't use a subform because, in datasheet view, subform fields are not displayed in the linear fashion I need, but instead go hide under the "+" button for each record.
So, even though everything is locked from editing, the combo box arrow still appears when the user clicks on the combo box field, and I don't want it to. It's just misleading to the user. Anyone know how to disable the arrows? Or, if you catch my drift, do you know of another simple solution?
I'm not a keen programmer in case you couldn't figure that out. If you've got any VB tips then let me know.

On a form, I want to disable the save button, 'cmdSave' whilst the form's mandatory fields have been left blank.
I've put in a smart tag, called, 'Req' against each required field and have used the following code on the forms current event.
Code:
Private Sub Form_Current()
Dim ctl As Control
For Each ctl In Me.Controls
If ctl.ControlType = acTextBox Or ctl.ControlType = acComboBox Or ctl.ControlType = acListBox Then
[Code] ....
The save button is disabled, but it won't enable again after each field has data entered against it.
I also have this code in the AfterUpdate event in each required field:
Code:
Private Sub cboErrorID_AfterUpdate()
Call Form_Current
End Sub

I'm using Access 2010. I have a form that has a combo box. The combo box lists all employee names and one has to be selected. I've been adding employees over time as new employees come. This DB is 3 years old so there are many employees showing in the combo box selection that are no longer here. I'd like to only have the current employees visible but I do not want to just delete them from the Table because then the historic data wouldn't be complete. How can I only show the current employees in the combo box and maintain the data in the table?

I have a query based on two tables, joined on one field (this field is the primary key in Table A. Table B doesn't have a primary key). When working inside this query, it gives me the option to delete records. However, when I try, the row disappears from the query but then if I save and close and either re-open table A or the resulting query, that record is back. It doesn't actually delete. If I go to table A directly and delete it, it's gone for good.
How can I make it so that when I delete the record inside the query it actually deletes? And if that's not an option, can I make it so that it doesn't seem like I can delete records inside the query so that people don't make the mistake?

I think my problem has something to do with security but I can't figure out what to change.

Hi,
I am just about to set up user level security for my database. Before I do, how do I disable the holding the shift key thing when opening a database to get into the database window?
I want to make it so the users can't see the database window or access the backend data. As I will need to give permissions to use most of the tables, how is this done?
I am using Version: 2002 (10.0) XP
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I need to disable the [Shift] key so that when the users open my MS Access database, they cannot by pass the open form and display the database window.
We had code that worked correctly with an MS Access 2000 MDB, and even works with an MS Access 2003 ADP, but the same code is ignored by MS Access 2003 MDB.
We add Module named "DisableByPassKey", here is the code...
Public Function SetProperties(strPropName As String, varPropType As Variant, varPropValue As Variant) As Integer
On Error GoTo Err_SetProperties
Dim prps As AccessObjectProperties
Dim prp As AccessObjectProperty
Dim isPresent As Boolean
Set prps = Application.CurrentProject.Properties
For Each prp In prps
If (StrComp(prp.Name, strPropName, vbTextCompare) = 0) Then
isPresent = True
Exit For
End If
Next
If (isPresent) Then
prps(strPropName).Value = varPropValue
Else
prps.Add strPropName, varPropValue
End If
Exit_SetProperties:
Exit Function
Err_SetProperties:
If Err = 3270 Then 'Property not found
Properties.Append prp
Resume Next
Else
SetProperties = False
MsgBox "Runtime Error # " & Err.Number & vbCrLf & vbLf & Err.Description
Resume Exit_SetProperties
End If
End Function
The code does not cause an error, it just seems to do nothing. When I set the [Shift] key to "disabled", then re-open the database, the [Shift] key works once again.
If you have any ideas, it would be great.
Thank you!

The code to disable shift keys at start up that has been posted here numeroous times is causing me problems. I am a complete novice with vba. but i cannot seem to get it to work and there seems to be a problem with the following line of code:-
db.Properties(strPropName) = varPropValue
Can anyone explain what may be going wrong. The shift key still by-passes and no password is asked for. If I do click the button on the start-up screen and enter the password I get error 3270 and the line above is highlighted.
