Can Access Accept An SQL Request From Another Program?

Feb 8, 2006

I have noticed diagrams showing Microsoft SQL Server accepting SQL statements sent by “SQL Requesters” over connections. I would like to know if Microsoft Access can be used in that fashion?

Put another way, can Access be configured to accept an SQL statement that another program (e.g. a VBA program in a VBA enabled 3rd party app) creates?

Currently, my VBA program instantiates an Access database object and then manipulates it (I just add a record to one of the tables), then closes and destroys it. This solution seems fragile (it stops working—I can explain more if needed). I would like to know if the technique inferred by my question would be more reliable.

Access Query To Accept Multiple Check Box Parameters

Nov 9, 2007

Hi,

I really hope someone will be able to help me with this one as I am sure im just missing something simple.

I have an unbound form which has 20 yes/no unbound check boxes. The purpose of the form is to allow users to tick the various fields and a subform return the results. The subform, which does requery when a check box is ticked is based off a query. Initially, I wanted all the records to display before any check boxes are ticked so I have used the following criteria:

Like IIf([Forms]![Search]![Field1]=False,"*",[Forms]![Search]![Field1])

Which basically reads if field1 is no then display all records, else display all yes. Now that works fine but what I would like to have working is that if a client ticks field1, field2, and field3 it displays all records that have ‘yes’ in either field. Currently, if more than field is ticked the query treats it like:

Field1 And Field2 And Field3 And etc = true

I want to be able to select several check boxes and have the query return results for each check box that was checked. I would like to avoid doing this by having an append and delete query per checkbox.

Thank you

I am using Access 2003 and I am having trouble with a Combo Box on a form.

I had a combo box (based on a table), storing the choice in a field in the query and underlying table the form is based on. Everything was working fine, until... I altered the form based on a query. Now when you make a choice from the drop down list you get an error bell and nothing happens.

Help With Special Characters In Access

Jun 14, 2006

Hi,

I'm not sure whether i'm in the right forum or not but i'll tell you my problem and if i'm not you can point me in the right direction.

I have a form with a text area which allow's the user to submit a comment to an Access database.

I get the following error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'

but this only seems to happen when the following characters are used " . / * : ! # & - ? " in the message.

Can the settings in Access be changed to correct this problem
or is it a coding problem??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How To Search An Access Table For Unwanted <cr> Characters

Apr 3, 2006

How to search an Access table for unwanted <cr> characters

Occasionally a stray carriage return <cr> Ascii 013 character finds its way into an Access table. These destroy the database when the table is processed by an outside utility for data cleansing.

To prevent this from happening, we have been told to clean the table before submitting it, i.e. remove all of the following:

carriage return, comma, double quotes, equals, greater than, smaller than

Is there any utility available which will remove all these characters when being run only once? (i.e. not find/replace which has to be started separately for each of these characters)

How do I search for a <cr>, even with find/replace?

Thanks.

Access Query Field Limited To 255 Characters

Jan 24, 2007

Hello,

I have created a query using the query builder by concatenationg several fields using the expression builder. Once concatenated, the total number of characters is greater than 255, and is therefore truncated. Since this is a query field and not a table field, there must be a way around this limitation. I can't even create the query and dump the results into a memo field because the dump will still only contain 255 char.

I could probably create the query using VBA, which creates a table containg a memo field, which is then populated by a variable containing the concatenated fields, but I would like a simpler solution.

Any ideas on how I can generate a query field that contains more than 255 char? The query is used to populate a report.

Thanks in advance.

Excel To Access Import Limited To 255 Characters...

Nov 30, 2004

In importing data from Excel 2002 to Access 2000, I have several columns of text data that has more than 255 characters; however, importing into Access does not give me the option to redefine those data fields from "Text" to "Memo". As a result, Access truncates the data to 255 characters.

Is there anyway to work around this issue by still using the Excel file? I have saved the Excel file as an HTML file and this seems to work, but it is an extra step that I would like to avoid.

Thanks for any help.

Trouble! Replacing Characters In A Large Access Database

Jun 1, 2007

Howdy,

I am trying to clean up one field of a large database. Currently this field has many records that are listed as "XXXX, Inc.". I am trying to find a way to change all of those to "XXXX Inc" in the entire database.

I saw raskews code snippet on changing multiple characters in a string, but I have to admit I have only use VBA in Excel before and having a hard time with the basics.

Does anyone have some code or ideas on how to do this or something similar?

Thanks,

Can Access Remove Nonprinting Characters From Imported Data?

Jul 27, 2014

I copy some information from a website and then paste/values into Excel. I noticed that some non-printing characters are copied to. Suppose I were to import this Excel spreadsheet into an Access table. Now I need to clean up/remove those non-printing characters. What is the best way to do this in Access?

I suppose I could set up a calculated column with =SUBSTITUTE([InvHours],char(160),"") as the formula, where InvHours is the field name containing the non-printing characters. But if I did this, then I would still retain the original field with the non-printing characters which would increase the size of the database. I don't think I could delete it because then the calculated column wouldn't work. So I would rather not pursue this option if possible.

Would it be possible to somehow run a macro that could automatically be triggered as soon as data is imported, and that macro would clip out the non-printing characters without having to copy anything to blank columns?

Or does Access have some built-in feature that could do this?

Importing Data From Excel To Memo Field In Access Is Truncated After 255 Characters

Nov 16, 2007

I haven't seen anyone run into this particular problem on this forum...

I'm importing data from an excel spreadsheet to an MS Access (2007) table. One of the fields in the table is a text memo field able to support more than 255 characters...

Issue:
The issue is that any cell in Excel that is greater than 255 characters is truncated when imported to MS Access even though the field is a memo field. There isn't any documentation on Microsoft's website about this and I don't see any way to work around it other than manually copying the data from excel to MS Access.

Anyone have any input on this matter?

Thanks in advance!

Modules & VBA :: Access Memo Field Copy To Excel Truncates At 255 Characters

Nov 25, 2013

Two Solutions to address moving an Access Memo field into Excel when string has > 255 characters. All my 'reports' use Excel VBA (Access Reports are not used). The Excel reports can have 40,000 records. Speed to create the report can be an issue.

Describing 2 Solutions below to address moving Access memo fields with > 255 characters into Excel. After running this code

Code:
720 ObjXL.DisplayAlerts = False
ObjXL.Columns("X:X").Select
ObjXL.Selection.NumberFormat = "@" ' set column to Text
730 ObjXL.Worksheets(intWorksheetNum).Cells(intRowPos, 1).CopyFromRecordset rsNutsAndBolts

The Comments column are limited to 255 characters. So, the CopyFromRecordset (recordsetvariable) creates the 255 character limitation.

The reason? The 255 character limit is because CopyFromRecordset sutomatically uses the Characters property of the Range object. The 255 limit would not be there if the Cell Value property is used to assign the string to that cell.

Dim sRx as String ' String Prescription
sRx = "String with > 255 characters ... you fill in the rest ...."
Cells(1, 1).Value = sRx ' Cell's Value property assignment can be very large

Solution 1:

The record set is still in memory. By using a loop, a cursor can start with record 1 (memo column) and assign that value to the Excel row / column using the .value as shown above. Basically, this moves one memo field at a time, record by record. e.g. Read First recordset in Access, copy to variable, assign value to Excel row/column Then move next on each Access and Excel.

Solution 2:

An Access Memo filed [RxNotes] can have up to 750 characters. Cut it apart into three new fields that end up out in the very right Excel columns AA, AB, AC.

Note1=Mid([RxNotes],1,250)
Note2=Mid([RxNotes],251,250)
Note3=Mid([RxNotes],501,250)
Then using Excel Object - Concat the cells back cell by cell...
X2=CONCATENATE(AA2,AB2,AC2))

Then delete the columns AA, AB, AC to hide the evidence..Neither solution is all that elequent. Read about this and by golly, it made a difference

ConcatComments = "'" & CommentString

Before using the CopyFromRecordset be sure to add a single quote in front of the large string.

Turns out the interface between Access and Excel look for this to prepare Excel immediately for the string to be a string, not something else. Some of my strings had weird print characters that kind of looked like Japenese characters. It seemed random, it always happened if the string was 255 or more characters (ramdonly, not always). The single quote doesn't show up in Excel, but got rid of all the noise.

Form Won't Accept New Data

Mar 25, 2005

I have created a form based on a query that joins two tables. When I run the form, I am able to input new data into all fields that are from one of the two tables, but it won't accept new data into the second table. I don't get an error message that might help me identify the problem. The join between the tables is of the "include all records from Table A and only those records from Table B where the joined fields are equal."

Can anyone suggest where my problem might lie? Thanks!

When using 'ww' as the criteria in the DatePart calculation it will not accept 1 for 6th Jan 2005 which is week 1, you have to enter 2 and it will select it, in fact all the weeks so far in 2005 are out by 1. To cure it you can add on -1 to the query and it works fine until you go back to the previous year and it screws up those dates.

Any ideas?

Query Won't Accept Multiselect LB Criteria

Mar 23, 2005

Hello,

I've scoured the dozen archived threads that relate to my challenge, but I still can't quite overcome it.

I have an aggregate query that runs but returns no values.

This is how I've tried to set things up:
A user makes a multiple selection in a list box on a form.
The multiple selection gets strung into an SQL that I feed to a hidden control on the form.
Whatever is in the hidden control then becomes the Where clause that I reference in a Criteria cell in my query.
The query is run when the user presses a command button.

Can anybody tell what's wrong with my code? Thanks very much in advance!

General :: Subform Does Not Accept More New Records

May 14, 2013

I have a db for my clinic with 3 tables, one is Patient (P_ID, P_Name, P_Age, P_Sex...etc. The second is Referral (R_ID, R_Date, R_Clinic, R_Diagnosis...etc. The third is Therapist (T_ID, T_Name, T_Division, TherapyDate, T_Plan...etc.

The main form contains all patient info and below I have a subform showing info from both other tables (Referral and Therapist).

Each patient could have more than one referral, so I made the relation between Patient table and Referral table, one to many.

Other relations are as follow:

Patient to Therapist (one to many) because one patient could be treated by different therapist each time he is referred.

Therapist to Referral (one to many) because one therapist could handle many referrals.

Now for the first patient, I entered the first patient info in the main form and then the referral and therapist info in the subform, then the same patient was referred to me for the second time, when I attempted to enter the second record (referral) in the subform I am not able to. Why I do not Know, I am sure I did something wrong.

By the way most of the fields in the subform are comboboxes except for dates.
