Exporting From Access 2007 As Fixed Width Text File
Apr 23, 2008
Hi,
I am trying to export a query from an Access 2007 database into a fixed width text file, to import into a statistical program. The query is a simple select query from one table, selecting 5 columns. I am using a specification to set the width of each of the fields (image attached). The problem is with the first field in the table which is a long integer field. I want to set it as a fixed width of 4 characters, but every time it exports it sets the width as 11 characters. I have tried exporting from the original table, changing the data type but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Laura

I have a spec set up that controls the settings for an export file. the table and the form are set up with fields that are right justified. When the data is entered into the table from the form, it shows in the table as right justified. When I run a query and then try to export the results, I use the spec I set up to deliver the txt file in a fixed width ASCII txt file. The data shows in the txt file as left justified. - I need it to be right justified.
example:
$ amount- in the table, the dollar amount is 11 char long and is right justified do it looks like this: |-------7.50| I need those spaces (-) in the export file yet when I export it, it is left. The wizard shows a preview, yet there is no way to make it right.
Can I add blank spaces in the database or space fill the 7 preceding Char in the field with some sort of invisible char or zeros?
Any help would be great - thanks

I am trying to export a table (and possibly later a query) into a fixed width text file and I am not finding where to set the specifications. When I select Text File in the export tab, I only get the check box about Export datq with formatting and layout. Is that basically it? I do have the table set up with the correct widths for the fields.
An additional question:
This is a large table with 99 fields for a total width of 804 characters. Is there any limit for the six of a record for such an export?

Is there a way to use a convert use a "text to column" function in access that separates at a fixed width?I have an access table (that I can't change) that includes the data and time in the same column and I want to separate the two (date and time) in a query. I can't use the "Left" function because my date isn't a consistent 10 characters.

Basically im trying to setup a click button that will export my query as a text file ( the text file will then be fixed width and i have already setup the specifications for this).
I think i get how to complete the export part as below
OutFilePath = "file location i want the data to be exported to"
DoCmd.TransferText acExportFixed, "Welcome output query Export Specification", WelcomeOutput, OutFilePath, True
I just dont know how to run the query and link it to the export.

When exporting a table from Access as a text file, it keeps adding .00 to the end of the number format records that I am tying to export.
Why it is doing that and what I need to do to prevent that from happening?

Hello all,
I'm trying to export a table to .csv file, but I want fields with null values to be padded with spaces. ie. if the field length is 50, but there is a null value, I want all 50 spaces.
Anybody know if this is possible?
Thanks,

and the second question
2. in a form where you choose source code (i think) i merged in 1 table the FirstName and LastName i remember doing something like
Code:
[FirstName] & " & [LastName]
now when i preview the report after selecting my data from combo box it prints fine i mean merges the FirstName and LastName to 1 box but its not a fixed position i mean i placed the text box above the line "Fullname:_______"

Hey guys,
I searched the forums and couldnt find anything that directly related to my issue. What I am trying to do is export a fixed-width text file, but the issue is that the file has to be line feed only. By default Acces creates CR/LF and the client's import specification only allows for Line feed.
I am currently using a macro, with export specification, to create the file. Due to time constraints and other obligations, I am really trying to avoid VBA programming.
Thanks in advance,
Jahaines

I want to import a fixed length file into access 2003, it can only be imported directly into access 97/2000. This site, link http://www.ams.usda.gov/science/pdp/03data.txt
has the idea, but the problem is I can find the "2003 Data zip file" which this
site is refering to. - I have looked for it on the ms office 2003 cd,but I still
can find it.
Please can someone tell me where I can find de "2003 Data zip file"?

I'm not entirely sure how to go about this, but my intent is to have a form in my database for a user to bring up a open "*.txt" which is a width limited text file. the other system outs puts this file with a header like the following:

I want to ignore the headings. in addition the column titles since i will already know where they're going to go (hard coding it). can someone explain how to parse line by line as a new record in access db?

Hello,
I am exporting a table to a text file and I am having a problem with decimal places. I have got a column which is showing a number with differing number of decimal places, between 0 & 3. The column is set to Data Type decimal with auto decimal Places setting.
When I export this to a text file, it automatically changes the field to be 2 decimal places. Is there anything that can be done about this? If I export it to an excel file, the formatting stays the same, but the table will be too big to export to excel at some point so I can't do this.
Kind Regards
Carly

I am not sure if this is possible or not, I am trying to export a large table that includes a text qualifier "". I have managed to change all the fields in the table to text. the problem id that I need to supply the data to an outside source that wants the qualifier to also be included for null fields (they receive other files not processed from Access with this included).
I was just after info about if it is possible or I am wasting time trying to come up with a solution (this will be done on a regular basis so I don't want to have to export the table to another software package to perform the task.
Thank you for any assistance.............

In my database I would like my report to run every 30 seconds and export that data to a text file. I am not sure if that is best with a Do While or Do Until.
What I am looking to accomplish is to populate a map with data from the data base report. it needs to rerun the report and write the text file every 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Any help with the coding would be greatly appreciated.

I need to export data from a table in Access to a fixed length record text file and would like to find out how to export a number field into this text file with leading zeros.
The text file requires this 999999.99 and right justify and zero fill. My question is this: how can I zero fill from the table to the txt file? I went through the export wizard and couldn't see how to do it.
Thanks

Ok, I have a question. It might be a ridiculously simple question. Also, i'm under the impression that I may have to learn some VB, which i'm okay with. I've never really used MS Access, it has sat neglected on my desktop for a number of years and now I am starting to see just how powerful it is. By the way, I'm Jamie, nice to meet you all :) Now, onto the questionWhat i'd like to do is take the following database (for example)field1 = namefield2 = locationfield3 = favourite movieNow, i'd like to generate the following text from this database, for each entryDear <<name>>I once knew a man from <<location>>Was never really much of a <<favourite movie>> fan.Optionally, i'd like it to store the text for each seperately generated document in a file named <<name>>.txt, but that isn't needed urgently. It reminds me of a mail merge I learned to do a few years back in high school using appleworks (I am assuming it was appleworks).Anyway yes, thankyou in advance for any help with this.Jamie

I am able to successfully export data from an Access 2010 Query to a Tab Delimited Text file without difficulty. My problem is that the Query includes several 'tick boxes'. The resulting text file shows the text boxes as 1 or 0 as appropriate. What I actually require is a Y/N result. To achieve the required Y/N result requires some fiddly find and replace editing which is complicated by the fact that the query also contains telephone numbers incorporating 1 & 0, This then requires further editing of individual records to convert misplaced Y/N back to 1/0. Is their any way that one can force the export to convert text boxes to Y/N rather than 1/0.

First I'm developing in Access 2010. I am struggling with code that is supposed to create a text file and populate it from a query. The Query "cbt_Candidate_Export_Temp" is working fine but I keep getting the error in the second argument:
"Run-time error '3625': The text file specification 'cbtTab' does not exist... "
DoCmd.TransferText acExportDelim, "cbtTab", "cbt_Candidate_Export_Temp", "denali
bccdatabasesBCCCBT_Export" & strFileName & ".txt", True
What object is "cbtTab"? I didn't write this base code and I can't find it nor do I know how to create "cbtTab" ....

I have created a member data base form in Access2010.
That has been populated with 366 member records
I have two text box fields that are currently free type fields, Member Type & Member Status.
What is the best way I can change these to show only the relevant options:
i.e. Member Type ( Full, Family, Pensioner, Life. )
Member status ( Current, Lapsed, Deceased)
I have tried to right click the field but the "change to" option is greyed out & not available.
I have also tried to insert a combo box or list box to show these options. The "use control wizard" option has been highlighted but when I drag either a combo box or list box into the form. the wizard does not activate.
