Forms :: Access 2003 / Dynamic Search Form Very Slow?
Nov 8, 2013
I am using John Big Bootys Dynamic Search Form (built in Access 2003) as it totally met my search requirements, however when typing anything into the search box it is realy slow, taking several seconds for each letter to show in the box.
This has always been a problem now and again, however some of us have upgraded to Office 2010, (although still using the 2003 built Db as we won't move to a 2010 version Db untill March next year) and now the problem is even worse that ever. Everything else seems to work really well except for this search function, however it is the search function that is used more that anything else.

I have access 2003 installed on two different machines. One machine was built 6 months ago with the best hardware available. The other was an older slow IBM.
For some reason, I am experiencing what appears to be some serious time delay (talking in the range of seconds, sometimes tens of seconds) when building a report that has a subreport in it on the fast machine. Yet when I load the exact same database on the slow machine, the report opens instantly.
Any ideas? I'm lost.

I have a access 2003 database, and i am wondering if i can't setup a search function in a form that will open a file in windows explorer?
What i would like to do is have a test box that i enter in a number for example: 1234 then have a button named "Search" hit that button and it opens a corresponding file in windows explorer named 1234, or just opens that folder directly..

Hiya guys, I need to create a form that works exactly in the same way as a query works, so there's a criteria text box on the top of the form and a list box displaying all results. I know a query does this but i need a user friendly way of displaying this information.
The search is for customer names and i need to display this information in a user friendly way because my users will need to search the database before deciding whether the customer has been inputted into it or not.
I tried to create this using a query having the criteria as the form's text box value (as an expression) but when I input values into the text box the query does not update unless i reopen the query in edit mode and perform a search manually.
My email is aabaaiaaa@gmail.com if any of you guys have any ideas! Thanks
Jay x

I have utilised the code on John Big Booty's thread titled Dynamically search multiple fields (Thread #188663) to create a dynamic search feature
It works great however I would like to incorporate a date range filter into the results displayed in the ListBox.
Therefore the results would be dynamically filtered only if they meet the required date range.
The Date range data is on the form in a txtdatefrom and txtdateto textbox.
I have tried to adding a the ReleaseDate field with the following criteria to the query:
Between [forms]![frmSearch]![txtdatefrom] And [Forms]![frmSearch]![txtdateto]
however this has no impact at all.
How would I incorporate this date range into the query or VB Code?

Find the link by tacking on the following to this site's primary [URL] .....
It was, essentially, a type-and-show-as-you-go search functionality for an Access Form. It works great, except that I'm experiencing intermittent slowness when using the form. As I type, the characters appear very slowly and experience a significant lag time.
I only have about 70 records so far, so I'm pretty sure the slowness is not being caused by an overabundance of data. At other times, it goes super fast without any lag.

I wanted to build a dynamic search form using text box instead of the common combo box type.
I found an example that used the combo box and the searching portion of the code is as followed:
Code:
If Nz(Me.txtID, "") > "" Then
If Len(Nz(strFilter)) > 0 Then strFilter = strFilter & " And "
strFilter = strFilter & "CategoryID = '" & Me.txtID & "'"
bFilter = True
End If
How to insert (Like "*" & Me.txtID & "*") into the code to make the dynamic search using text box possible.

Access 2003
I have a rather complex form with an ODBC connection to data that takes some time to load.
The Form has a continuous subform I am using in place of a listbox to select records (I need more functionality than a listbox)
The Form's Record Source is a query
When the form opens, I does so in pieces as it populates
I'd like to either keep the form hidden until it completely loads

When I import a form with the Navigation control on it The following attributes of the navigation buttons are changed to #FFFFFF:
Hover Color, Pressed Color, Hover Fore Color, Pressed Fore Color
I was hoping to be able to automate the updating of customers databases by sending them a database which would export the required objects rather than the whole front end database. I can think a way around this by including code in the form so that it changes the attributes to the desired values, which are:
Accent 1, Accent 1, Background 1 and Background 1. But I would rather not have to do that.
It is interesting to note that the Border Color attribute is not changed on importing.

I am trying to create a search box in Access 2010 inside a form. I have managed to create a search using the 'Surname', but what I am unable to do is to factored in multiple records with the same surname.
Currently, the search field sits within the Form Header bar. I enter the surname or part of surname and click the command button which searches. Using MoveFirst and FindFirst, it jumps the form for the first record that matches (or partially matches).
However, there will be occasions where there will be more than one record that matches. What I want to do is to be able to jump to the first record, but if thats not the one I am looking, if you click search button again, it jumps to the next matching records etc... until I hit the I want?
I have tried the MoveNext, Previous, Last commands, but they dont work. Any quick fire coding out there?

I have a Continuous form that is used to place orders in my Purchase order Database. I have a combo box with a Textbox over laid, so the users can type in the Textbox and it filters the combo box as they type. This is to search Nominal ledger codes that the current user has set up.
This has been working fine, but now finding issues as people have 400+ Nominal coeds set up. So there is a lag when the user is typing.Is there a better way of doing this? i have a similar setup to search a supplier but this is not a continuous form and the majority of objects are un bound.
Code:
Private Sub lstSelect_AfterUpdate()
Me.lstSelect.RowSource = "qryCurrentNominalNew"
End Sub
Private Sub lstSelect_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)
Me.lstSelect.RowSource = "qryCurrentNominalNew"

I've got a DB, which has 3 forms ( all 'under' 3 navigation buttons/tabs ). The main form ( Client's form ) is set to show first, and currently has a recordsource of about 1350 records. I think the size of the recordsource, and the fact it 'loads' the other two forms all 'in one go', is slowing it down ( between 5 and 10 secs. to load ).
I read I should set the Visible properties of forms, not shown immediately, to false, only setting them to True in the On_Load event - when Tab is selected. Ideal I thought. However, I can't find this property in the Form's property sheet.

I've been using the following code successfully in Access 2003 & now I need to migrate to Access 2010. The purpose of the code is to use the items that the user selects in the list box to build the criteria of a query. Access 2010 keeps giving me a syntax error when I try to run the query & I don't know why:
My code is:
On Error GoTo Err_Command151_Click
' Declare variables
Dim db As DAO.Database
Dim qdf As DAO.QueryDef
Dim varItem As Variant
Dim strCriteria As String
Dim strSQL As String
[Code] .....
The syntax error I get in Access 2010 is:
Syntax Error in query expression 'SELECT * FROM
qryContractListSummarybyDateContract3TYPEBREAK WHERE
qryContractListSummarybyDateContract3TYPEBREAK.Rep ortableName IN('Adbri
Masonry NSW');'

I'm a BA so i'm converting my excel issues list into a database with a front end where i can create new issue records this uses a form that sits on top of the issues_table.
Howver, i have created a table called Projects and a table called Test_Plans
Each issue is logged against a project and a test plan. Lets say ProjectA has TestPlan1 and ProjectB has Testplan2.
On my issues form, i can select ProjectA in the project field.
In the Testplan field i can select EITHER TestPlan1 or Testplan2
Testplan1 is the only valid entry.
How do i
a) Once I have selected ProjectA in the Project field only display Testplan1 in the Testplan field?
or
b) If the user tries to enter testplan2 for it to error?
I've tried creating a query and linking the controlsource field to it but it doesn't like that!

I'm new to Access. I started building a database for work (I work at a nursery) and I used John's Dynamic Search code for an Inventory Input Database but I was wondering is it possible to use this code to input data into a table.
So basically I'm creating a database where I can input Item ID, Description(Plant name), Date, Location, Yard, and notes. For the Item ID and Description that is where I used the dynamic search code (as a combo box) so I can easily enter the Item ID and it will search for the Description. I got all this to work except that when I choose my selection it does not save on to the records. The other fields does save just not the dynamic search.

I am using John Big Booty's code for narrowing down the content of a listbox. It works beautifully, with the exception of when I type the character "i" into the search box it gives me a Runtime 2110, cannot setfocus error. I have run through the entire alphabet in lower and upper case and consistently get the code failing on lowercase i only.
Here is the code:
Private Sub searchFor_Change()
'Create a string (text) variable
Dim vSearchString As String
'Populate the string variable with the text entered in the Text Box SearchFor
vSearchString = searchFor.Text
[Code] ....
Here is the link to the original thread that the code came from. [URL] ....
