Forms :: BeforeUpdate Event Of Linked Subform Firing Multiple Times
May 27, 2015
I have to maintain an Access form which contain a linked subform (using Master and Child fields).
Basically, in the main form (Form1), the user choose a value in a combobox and the subform (Form2) is automatically updated.
My issue is that I have a BeforeUpdate event on one field of my subform which is preventing to update the field (Cancel=true) when it does not meet the criteria. The alert msgbox should appear once if there is any error in the field but the BeforeUpdate event is always fired 3 times for unknown reason.
What I don't understand is that if I open the subform (Form2) as a main form or if i remove the child/master link fields in the subform property sheet, it is working as expected with the BeforeUpdate event being fired only once.

I have a mainform with a search function so the user can select a record to view and update. The selected record is displayed in Subform1 on Page1 of a tab control. The record source of this form is Query1. Page2 of the tab control contains Subform2; record source is the result of Query1 joined to Query2.
The forms correctly displays, updates and adds records my problem occurs when I add VBA code to the BeforeUpdate event of a control on Subform1. The code appears to execute once for each page in the tab control.
Has anyone any suggestions on how I can correct my problem.
Thanks

I'm trying to clean up one HUGE and ugly form by using subforms within tabs. I have a main form with "BottleID" as the key field and linking field. The tab displays pictures based on the BottleID and it works like a dream. My problem is that the "on_current" event happens 4 times on each record. For instance, I go up a record and it sets Picture1.value 4 times and it's the same thing everytime.
I'm wondering if the problems is due to bad table design. Everything is located within one table and I'm really unable to change this. It's been like this from the get go and too much to change to break it apart. Anyway, the subform is pulling data from the same table. I thought maybe this was the cause.
I'd post the database if possible, however there are hardcoded directory's and will not work unless they are all set up. Not worth it IMO. Any ideas? I tried doing the BottleID = forms!frmMain!BottleID instead of the auto-link in Access but it gives me several errors and I don't believe it buys me anything. Thanks in advance!

and another 15 text boxes named Comment1, Comment2, Comment3, etc...
i'd like to write an AfterUpdate event code that will apply to all of the Qty controls..instead of write 15 individual AfterUpdate events..

On a form I have a pair of controls, Price and PriceInUSD. If the user enters a new value into the Price field, then its AfterUpdate event fires, which looks up the relevant exchange rate and updates the PriceInUSD control accordingly. That all works fine.
Now in some circumstances (if a checkbox elsewhere on the form is checked), I generate a modal dialog box asking the user to confirm that the Price value is correct, or enter a new value.
That modal dialogue box's Enter button's On Click event then updates the Price control before closing the dialog. That bit works fine, too - but I had thought that this update of the Price control would fire its AfterUpdate event - but it doesn't.
So, my basic question is : do Control events only fire in response to user input, and not to programmed changes ?

Hey all, i would appreciate some help with Access here.
I am an attorney, and i am trying to set up an access database for all of my cases.
I have one table in which i keep the names, contact information, etc of all the witnesses who i have used or will be using (especially expert or law enforcement witnesses who i will be using in multiple cases).
I also have a main table in which i have a record for each case. Because I have multiple witnesses for most of my cases, I have had to create multiple relationships between my main cases table and my witnesses table.
My question is this: How do I specify when setting up a report (or a form/query/etc) that when i ask for the witness's address i am looking for the address i made with a particular witness, specify that relationship between the two tables, as opposed to the other relationships between the same two tables.
I hope that makes sense, and i would very much appreciate if someone could give me instructions.
Thank you.

Hello,
I have an "After Update" event procedure for a field on a form that calls a VBA sub. When I use a different VBA sub to input a value in the above mentioned field, the "After Update" event does not occur, even thought the data in the field has been changed. (Of course if I manually enter the data, the field "After Update" event works.)
Is there a flag or condition that needs to be set in my VBA sub to let the field realize that it has been changed? Or possible a way to call the fields AfterUpdate Sub?
I tried having a my sub call the AfterUpdate sub to see what would happen, but didn't get it to work. I got a bunch of error and didn't feel like this was really the way to go.
I also could just duplicate all the code in the AfterUpdate sub for the field, but we all know that that is not a good idea.
Thank you for any help.

I have structured a subform as a datasheet to allow users to copy and paste from Excel into the database. Datasheet has numerous fields and 18 rows. I have set up recalculations of other data in the AfterUpdate event of the fields in the datasheet. This works perfectly until the user copies multiple rows from Excel and pastes them (one column at a time) into the datasheet.
Is there an event I can capture when the user copies and pastes a column?
Muchas-Grasias for any assistance.

I have an issue with the dblclick event not firing immediately from my listbox. It does eventually fire if i mash the mouse button for long enough but obviously that is not an acceptable solution.The listbox also has an afterupdate event which is what fires when i double click.
I have also tried calling the code from an onclick command button which works fine but if i try and call that from the dblclick event it does not.
I have used the dblclick event in other projects with afterupdate and it has worked without problem.
Code:
Private Sub lstFileList_AfterUpdate()
strPDF = Me.lstFileList.Column(0)
Me.PDFViewer.LoadFile (strPDF)
Dim fso As New FileSystemObject
strFileName = fso.GetFileName(strPDF)
[Code] ....

We use our CRM for entering client orders, which is done through our 'OrderEntry' form. On that form we have a subform that we use to enter order lines - as we have a range of products on offer, an order can be made up of one product or anything up to 100.We have an 'amount' textbox on the subform, that the users enter the cost of each line, and as they add more lines the total cost of the order is calculated using a textbox in the subform Footer, with the ControlSource set to =Sum([amount]).
On the main form, we have a Net textbox, that the user will add in the total cost of the order once they've added all the order lines, and providing the =Sum([amount]) textbox on the subform matches the figure in the Net textbox, a button to Proceed the order and go on to the next step appears.
The intermittent problem I have, is that the OnCurrent event I use to show the Proceed button does not seem to fire on its own - but when I stop the code and step through it, it will show the Proceed button without any problems.Here's the code:
(the Proceed button is referred to a 'Command80')
Code:
Dim OS As String
Dim UT As String
OS = OrderStatus
UT = fGetUserType
[code]....
I've made the part that refers to the Proceed button bold, but thought I'd add in the whole OnCurrent event in case there was anything in there that was blocking it.
I added in the MsgBox code at the bottom to make sure the OnCurrent was firing, and that works fine.I've searched through the rest of the code, and there's nothing else in there that references the Visible property of the button.I've been through the decompile process detailed here, and also been through this similar thread with a fine toothcomb and this still won't work.
I've saved the form out as a textfile and then imported it back in, both through the immediate window, and short of importing everything in to a new DB and starting again

Question - How do you do data validation during the BeforeUpdate event? How do you halt the event without getting an error message?
I have tried the following:
If (Me.Control.Value <> "") Then
'Do nothing.
Else
Msgbox "Please enter a value for Control."
Cancel = True
End If
When Cancel = True is executed, I get the following message:
You can't save this record at this time. DatabaseName may have encountered an error while trying to save a record. If you close this object now, the data changes you made will be lost. Do you want to close the database object anyway?
I can't seem to halt or "cancel" the BeforeUpdate event without getting this error message. After hours of looking for this answer, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm developing in Access 2007 and created a runtime version.
When the user clicks the X to close the runtime application, the main form's Load event fires. Any clues as to why this might be? Some of the code is based on other forms that do close, so of course errors start flying. Note, this is only in the runtime version; the accdb file works just fine.
My current workaround is to put the offending code into the forms On Current event, which I'm able to do in this context.
Is it wrong to think that a forms On_Load event shouldn't be firing when the application is closing?

I'm using Access 2K. I have created a Form BeforeUpdate event to check that certain fields in the form have been filled. However, I don't want to do the check until after a subform entry is also complete, but the BeforeUpdate event fires as soon as the subform is entered. Is there any way I can around this?
Thanks.

I've got a form with Text boxes StartDate (datatype = Date / Time) and Interval (datatype = Numeric).
Both text boxes are bound controls.
I'd like to validate whether summing the StartDate with the Interval entered results in a calculated date, falling on either Saturday or Sunday.
If so, the Interval needs to be reset so that the calculated day will fall on the first Monday falling after the StartDate.
The code I've got so far results in an error:
Run-time error '-2147352567 (80020009):
The macro or function set to the BeforeUpdate or ValidationRule property for this field is preventing Microsoft Access from saving the data in the field.
I can understand why this error is generated.
What I can't figure out is how to adapt the code.
The AfterUpdate event is no option as this is triggered too late...
BTW, I'm on Access2000
Here's the code I've got so far:
Private Sub Interval_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)
Dim Response
Dim strInterval As Integer
If Weekday(Me.Startdatum + Me.Interval, vbMonday) = 6 Or Weekday(Me.Startdatum + Me.Interval, vbMonday) = 7 Then
Response = MsgBox("Eerstvolgende klusdatum valt in het weekend, laten vallen op maandag?", vbYesNo)
End If
If Response = vbYes Then
strInterval = 8 - Weekday(Me.Startdatum, vbMonday)
Me.Interval = strInterval
Else
If Response = vbNo Then
Me.Undo
End If
End If
End Sub

RV

I'm working on a bit of code that before a combobox is changed checks with the user to confirm that they want the change to go ahead, if yes a recorded is added to a table
This all work fine apart from if no is selected - I am trying to get the combobox to undo the change however when you select no the msgbox pops up fine but the combobox does not undo
Can't see where I'm going wrong I thought undo worked for comboboxes
Code:
' Displays a message box with the yes and no options.
Response = MsgBox(prompt:="Do you wish to change the status of this Job? 'Yes' or 'No'.", Buttons:=vbYesNo)
' If Yes button selected
If Response = vbYes Then

I have a listbox on a subform (or a subform within a subform).
When it is clicked I want all other listboxes to unselect.
There may be listboxes on the mainform, on other subforms, on other subforms of subforms.
I imagine I'm looking at a recursive function of some sort, but I'm not entirely sure of syntax to identify parent and children forms...
pseudocode so far:
loop all controls
if control = listbox, unselect all
if control = subform - recurse: loop all subform controls
if control = parent... err... Fail.

I have a form which consists of 20 similar subforms. The subform has only two fields.
When I want to go to the next subform, I use CTRL TAB
But I want to use only TAB.
I have tried a couple of things with the keypress event of that control, but cannot find a solution that works. What I would like:
- when the user is pressing TAB in the last field of a subform, that the program reacts like CTRL TAB and goes to the next subform.

I have some code for the Key Down event for particular column in my subform
Private Sub Sample_ID_KeyDown(KeyCode As Integer, Shift As Integer)
Sample_ID = Nz(DMax("Sample_ID", "Sample_Sheets")) + 1
mTo = Nz(DMax("mTo", "Sample_Sheets")) + 1
mFrom = Nz(DMax("mFrom", "Sample_Sheets"))
End Sub
This works, however it also work when I press Key Up, changing what the key down previously did. I do not want it to do this. I have nothing entered in the Key up event for the form properties.

I have a continuous subform which essentially comprises of a textbox that shows a field from a query.
The text in that box is essentially a few letters and a few numbers - what I am wondering is if I can have an on click event for the textbox, that when a user clicks the text it takes them to the record (in a different form) that matches the text contained in the textbox they clicked?

I am working with 2 forms and a subform.
frmTaskTracker -subfrmInbox (Datasheet View - based on a query)
frmUpdateInboxItem
subfrmInbox displays a summary of tasks on a task list. The user navigates to frmUpdateInboxItem from frmTaskTracker. After updating a record from frmUpdateInboxItem, it is possible that it the record in question will no longer meet the requirements to have it listed on subfrmInbox.
I have attempted to add code to the on close event of frmUpdateInboxItem to requery the sub form on frmTaskTracker but am not getting the syntax correct.
correct my code? Alternatively is there is a more correct way to do this, I'd be happy to learn it.
Code:
Option Compare Database
Private Sub cmdClose_Click()
Me.[frmTasktracker]![subfrmInbox].Requery
DoCmd.Close acForm, "frmUpdateInboxItem"
End Sub

I have a form [Art_DepartmentFilter] that has a subform [Art_ByRoomSubform]. The linked master/child fields are DeptID and RoomID.
There is a list box on the form that allows you to select the department, and this also updates a list box that shows the rooms in that department that have art in them.
I would like the user to be able to filter the form to show either all of the art in that department, or just the art in the specific room. I have two separate buttons, one for each filter (cmdDeptFilter, and cmdRoomFilter).
I realized I had to add the link for the RoomID in order to get the filter for the room to work (which it does nowoCmd.ApplyFilter , "[qry_artbyroom]![DeptID]=[forms]![art_departmentfilter]![textdeptid] and [qry_artbyroom]![roomid]=[forms]![art_departmentfilter]![textroomid]").
However, DoCmd.ApplyFilter , "[qry_artbyroom]![DeptID]=[forms]![art_departmentfilter]![textdeptid] and [qry_artbyroom]![roomid] like '*'" returns just the first room listed for the department, not all of the rooms.
How can I show all of the rooms for the department selected?

What I have is a form with a combo box that lets a user select the Letter Type. For 1 letter in particular I want it to open up a subform(s) that holds "options" that users can click on. My question is how would I get these options / multiple options to link to 1 record that correlates with the Letter Type?
