Forms :: When Navigating Tabs - Preventing The Loss Of First Tab
Aug 7, 2014
First thing: I have a navigation form that leads through 5 subforms on my database. One is a data entry form, the rest are various informative forms with explanations, images and other text mainly. In this scenario, a user enters data on the first tab but doesn't finish it. The user clicks over to check up on some guidelines on the other tabs and then comes back to the first tab for find that all of the fields he entered reset and he lost everything.
Is there a way of preventing this from happening? Plan A would be for me to allow the user to switch around tabs without losing the data he or she entered into textboxes or dropdowns. Plan B would be for me to have a popup that appears when he tries to switch tabs that warns him of data loss and that he should save before moving tabs.
PS: One other thing: I have the standard Access wizard search button on my first tab that allows the user to search records. This works well, but I'd like for the search box to close immediately after a search turns up a matching record. This seems odd, but the users requested it because manually closing the search box after every search can add up to a lot of wasted time.

I'm trying to clean up a form a bit and have it only show certain subforms/graphs if the data exists. I already have columns in a combobox query to show an "X" for if certain data appears:
Now, I know I could build another query and have some system go through and identify these things, but the easiest thing would be to reference the "X" in the columns of the combobox. Is there an easy way to reference values in the other (non-primary) columns? Or can you think of an easy way to make these subforms only be visible when the data exists? Maybe have an on load event for the subform?

Hi
with the help of this site, i have made big advances in learning and adapting code, in building my access FE on an SQL BE.
however, i have a problem, i cant find any information on in how to resolve.
i am using menus to navigate between forms, but i cannot synchronise the critical value between the forms.
so i am on a form with critical value, say hullID
i use a menu command to open another form, but i need the form to open with the same hullID as the critical value as the previous form which is about to close.
because i can go to the new form from any form, using the menu command, i cannot directly link the critical value,
is there a way to use the critical value from the current focus form, to the new opening form
many thanks in advance

I have made an access database for doing inventory at work. We have an inventory of approx. 700 items that need to be counted each month. I have a subform that is in datasheet view, it has Inventory IDs, product descriptions, UOMs, and a field to enter quantities. On the parent form are pictures and extra descriptions linked to each item in the subform.
The Inventory IDs all start with a 3 letter alpha code for which class of item they are PLU for plumbing, FAS for fasteners, ELD for electrical device, etc. There are about 15 different classes of these inventory items. The rest of the InvIDs are 4 digits: (PLU5453 or ELD1123)
We are using tablets to do the inventory counts, so to search for an item we can swipe through the datasheet to find the InvIDs we are looking for and then enter the quantity. After our initial inventory my supervisor asked if I could add buttons to jump to the first item in a particular class of item such as PLU0001. He showed me his address book in his phone as an example, how he can push a P button to bring him to the first name that starts with P.
I considered tabs for each class, but he wants to navigate to other items by just swiping also. I tried to make a Macro that would use Go To Record but was unable to make that work.

I have a form and a subform for data entry. It is often the case that not all the data may have been entered and so a user might need to go to recordID 24 in 30 already entered main records. However, he needs to get to that record via a (unique) 1-1 field. How do I create the form so that as well as being able to go to the first, the last, the next, the previous record, I can go to a record of my choice.

I have a form which consists of four (4) tabbed sheets. The first sheet is the main form and the other three sheets are the linked subforms.
Pressing the tab key on the keyboard navigates from field to field in each individual form; however, I would like that when I get to the last field of each form, pressing tab moves to the next sheet or the first field of the next subform.
The problem I am getting is that when I get to the last field of the main form and/or subforms, hitting the tab button creates a new record in the specific form, which I do not want. I want to just tab to the next subform.

I need to ensure that the data entered into a field on a form is correct. The field contains an email address and I have a function to check if the format is correct.
If the format is incorrect I need the cursor to return to the field in that record. The form is continuous.
What event should I use?

I am attempting to make a system where the lifespan of baskets in a production process can be tracked. In order to do this I am looking to create a form to input when a new basket is introduced. Each basket has a 'disc' associated with a number on (BasketNumber), however these discs are reused once the basket breaks which is making it more difficult.
I have a form (Add_New_Basket) which feeds into a table (Active_Basket); what I am trying to do is make sure that a new basket cannot be introduced with the same disc number as an active basket. The way I am trying to determine which baskets are active is that I have an end date, that is filled in once the basket has been scrapped.
Therefore I am trying to set my Add_New_Basket form to restrict me entering a new record with BasketNumber 999, if there is already a BasketNumber 999 in the table with 'EndDate' null. If there is BasketNumber 999 and EndDate is dd/mm/yyyy then it can create the entry. My form Add_New_Basket has fields ID (which is hidden), BasketNumber, StartDate (=Date()).My table has fields: ID, BasketNumber, StartDate, EndDate

Private Sub dom_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)
If Me.DOM > Date Then
MsgBox "Please enter a Valid DOM", vbInformation, "Check again !!"
Cancel = True
End If
End Sub
which doesn't accept any date whether it's today, last week, last year or in the future!

My wife is slimming, I would like to record weekly results.
How do I make a new entry compare with her ideal weight and flag up her progress.
e.g. ideal weight =10 entry 1 13 entry 2 12.9 etc
Can I get the cell holding the new entry to refer to the ideal weight and flag up the difference each time I update the weight for the new week?

I'm trying to make a very simple click through data entry screen in Access 2007. For each record I want to have a standard form with three buttons at the bottom. Each button opens a new form (each form has a set of tabbed pages on it as there is lots to enter). How do I make sure that each of the additional forms populate the same record as the main form.

Loss of Primary Key when importing csv file
Hi All,
We are submitting an Access db table with ID as primary key to an outside company for processing. We export it as csv file and that's how it comes back.
After importing it back, we noticed that our IDs, which previously had 'gaps' as a result of deleted records, had been changed in to a new continuous sequence (Autonumbered). This, of course, completely destroys our database since related tables depend on IDs being unchangeable.
We ***suspect*** that the IDs are being destroyed during the process of re-importing the csv file. We are using the Access import wizzard.
Access msg: "Access recommends that you define a Primary Key for your new table". We then are given the following options:
1Let Access ADD primary key
2Choose my own primary key
3No primary key
During Option 1, the ID column is displayed and high-lighted. But we do NOT want that option since it offers to ADD a primary key, whereas we already have one (ID). At most, we want to 'declare' or 'define' a primary key, but we do not want Access to ADD one.
So we try Option 2, hoping that this will give us the chance to CHOOSE ID as our primary key. But the moment we select that option, the ID column disappears. We are not given the chance to select ID as our primary key.
So we try Option 3, hoping to re-instate ID as primary key as soon as we have an Access table again. But the moment we select this option, the ID column disappears.
-----------------------
If we GO THROUGH with Option 1, we notice that Access has renumbered our ID, the IDs of all our 'deleted' records have been re-assigned. Or so it appears.
If we GO THROUGH with Option 3, the resulting table does not contain an ID column at all.
Of course, the damage may have been done by the outside company which processed our file, but if so, we have to prove it, and we have to take measures to avoid it.
Any comments and advice?
Thanks.
Adrian

Hi,
I'm a network manager at a school running 5 windows server 2003 servers (3 of which are DCs) and 350 windows XP clients. Network speed and traffic is excellent and most of the time the only software used is microsoft office. Most computers run office 2003 but some have office xp.
Here are a few scenarios of the problems:
Scenario 1
A teacher looks back at some work of a student who left a year or so ago to find all work as expected however all access databases are empty (no tables, forms etc. Just blank database files)
Scenario 2
A student says they were working on an access file only moments ago and everything vanished (resulting in a blank database file). They claim the file has been there for weeks, and has had data in it for weeks. They have been working on it a number of times a week. When I look through the backups, the database file exists but is empty on every occasion.
This problem occurs over 4 ICT suites (120 computers) at random and is always a different user. There seem to be no patterns. We get the Scenario 2 problem about once or twice a month, although sometimes a lot more and sometimes a lot less.
Any ideas or comments?! (I need some response even if it's not very helpful!)
Thanks,
Jonathan

A form displays information on a construction site in various text boxes. I want to enable the user to change this information but not until a save button is pressed.
Now I have the problem that as soon as I change the value of a text box, the data in the database is updated.
Is there a way to prevent these updates but still get the text fields to be linked to the attributes of a table?

I have created an Access 2007 database that uses a form for data entry. While the data is stored on the table exactly as entered, the data entry form rounds up and only displays the whole number.
In the properties of that form field, I have the format as fixed, with decimal places as set to 1 and is visible. However, the number still rounds. What do I need to do differently to make the number display as entered on my data entry form?

I am releatively new to using Access. I have a form created and linked to tables. I would like to know if there is a way to have the form automatically tab to the next field for me. I have several fields that have the same number of characters entered for every record. I would like it to jump to the next field once I've entered the maximum number of characters in that field. I tried setting the fields in the tables to the length I want, and it does stop me from entering any more than that in the forms, but I still need to press the tab key. Kind of annoying after a while. Anyone know how to do this? THanks.

I created the Form
I droped the Tab Control on it and made 2 more tabs
Now I want to add Text Boxes and populate them with values from a specific table. In the Control Property of each Text Box I set it to =[Table]![Field] and I get #Name?
I cannot seem to link the Text Box back to the specific table.
Once I do that I want to be able to Goto Next, Goto Previous etc.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

I have a A2007 database that is split to a shared server that is experiencing unidentified network problems. While working in the front-end users receive the following message periodically:
Quote:Your network access was interrupted. To continue close the database and then open it again. If the users are working in a form including queried data, the data is lost and the file crashes. This happens even though the front-end is on the user's computer and no tables are currently being queried. My question is why must the network be stable even though the database is split and queries are not occurring? The form's record source is a table though. But even with this the record source connection is not needed until the form is closed.

I have set up my main data entry form as a navigation form with 5 tabs/pages. The first three all contain fields from my main data table, the other 2 tabs/pages have fields from related tables.
Ok, so my question is: is if there is a way to go from tab/page 1 through the other 4 in succession with the main primary key (in this case an object ID number) automatically populated through. As it is now, when I start a new record for an object on tab/page 1, and then go to the next tab/page, it registers a new record has been created (at the bottom of the form it updates the total amount of records entered), but I have to manually enter in the ID field at the top the object ID number that I am entering info for. Otherwise it is still showing the details associated with the last record I was in the form updating.

Hey guys,
We are running a mdb access file that spawns different 'windows' or forms if you will. We've had a request from a staff member that they be opened in different taskbar instances in windows xp. It does in windows 2k, however.
The only way of swapping forms at the moment is to click "Window" and then the form name.
Any idea's guys?

Update an old database (2005 old) with new employees, jobs, etc.
Unfortunately, the old database had a lot of restrictions, was outdated in what we needed (even had the companies old name), and so forth. So, I decided to build a new one. I am at the very end of this journey and there is one thing that is keeping me from completing it:
When I put in a new employee's name, I do so in my first tab, Employee Data. The subform in this tab is "subEmployees" and it's source is a table called "Employees". My next tab is "Drug Tests" and in it is a subMaster and subChild. The subMaster is "subEmployees". A few more tabs over is "Training History", where again, there is a subMaster and subChild. Again, the subMaster is the form "subEmployees".
I would think that since all of these are the same subform or whatever, they should all update immediately when the other one's are changed. That, however, is not the case. I have to close and reopen (or enter/exit design view) to update information. Once the information is there, however, I can change it freely. I assume this is a problem with "requery" but I don't know how to fix it, as it is obviously refreshing just fine.
I do have code for requery but it came from the previous database (as my major is chemical engineering and I know very little about code) and the code only deals with the subChild of my "Drug Tests" and "Training History" tabs.

I have a database where I used a template as it's base. On the main "Welcome" screen there is a Tab Control with 4 pages in it. In the template, they added a button to 1 of the pages only. In other words, it is not visible on the other 3 pages.
My question is... how the heck did they do that??? I added a button on the same page right next to it. And no matter what I do, it shows up on ALL 4 pages!
