Forms :: Making A Field Grow In Size?
Jan 26, 2014
I have a subform that shows notes entered but if there is more text in the field then you cant see it all. Can I make it so that this field will grow so the whole input is visible or can I make it so when you click on it it opens in a larger window showing all the txt?

Every month, I receive an excel file. Within the excel file, column A, is populated full of numbers. These numbers varies in length
For eg
000001
100002
1111110
5234000
29788881
31111111
Steps
1)What I want to do is import this file into access
2) if there are only 6 digits, add additional zeros on front of the number, so that max number of digits is 10 For eg using the sample data above
100002 is 6 digits long I want it to display as 000 0 100 002
1111110 is 7 digits long I want it to display as 000 1 111 110
5234000 is 7 digits long I want it to display as 000 5 234 000
29788881is 8 digits long I want it to display as 002 9 788 881
From this, I would like to do a right look up (preferably look up 7), to produce a standard length number
0100002
1111110
5234000
9788881

I reported this a day or two ago and the post is now gone.I have a report with grow and shrink = yes everyplace - I have three fields aligned top and they do not grow or shrink correctly - if i move the fields so they are not aligned horizontally they all work, or seem to work, fine. Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong. Tested it on two computers.

I am using MS Access 2003.I have a report whose Detail band contains a zero-height Comment field positioned at the bottom of the other single row of fields. It has Can Grow = Yes, so it sits waiting to grow if there's any data in this Comment field.
However, when this report prints, if the Comment field just "happens" to straddle two pages, it gets positioned only on the first page and gets cut off in the process. (See attachment 2.) Ideally, the entire field should display on the second page instead.
If I adjust the margins in Page Setup, I can fix this on this particular report. However, depending on the data being reported, these new margin settings can create a problem for the same report with different data. (All depends on where the Comment falls.)I'd like the report to work consistently, no matter the data or margins.

Will keeping your field size shorter result in a smaller MDB file?
Or does Access only use as much space as there is real data in its fields.
Way back in the dBASE III days, dBASE would pad all your "real" information with as many spaces as necessary to fill up your field. I suspect that the MDB structure is probably smarter than that.
Another question on the same topic - I believe there is a maximum number of characters in a record (4000?). Can your field sizes add up to more than 4000, as long as the actual data, all combined, never totals 4000...?
Thanks............

I have a form that contains a blank text box for each field in a record. Until very recently it functioned correctly for years. Lately data enterers tried to fill a ten character field with five characters (ANNNN format, example X9999). Some records require an entry in this text box, some do not, so their field is left blank. Lately when a new entry is tried in this field, only the first three characters are accepted, blocking character four through ten from being entered. It acts as if the text length for this text box has been changed to three characters, but it is still the correct length in the Properties box.
The system keeps track of clients who have attended a nutrition education class and the form involved is the location the class was taught.

I have a form to input data into a table1. On the form I have a combo box to read from a next table exchange rate to input into the table1. Field in Tablet for the exchange rate is set to Field size double, Format currency, and decimals 6.
I am unable to set the field size on the form to read the 6 decimals. The combo box is set to Currency decimal 6. I tried General Number and it still only shows only one decimal.

I have a subform with continuous records. One of the fields in the recordset of the subform is a field named "Remarks". This field does not need to be visible on the continuous subform as it is rare that this field will have any entries.
I plan to apply conditional formatting on another field (IDcardNo) in the record line of the continuous subform so that when field "Remarks" contains any data it will show as a different format on the field IDcardNo.
I would like to make a small form appear when one points to the IDcardNo field with the different format, so that the data in the field "Remarks" pops up when one points to the field IDcardNo with altered format, showing that there is data in the field "Remarks".

Hi,
I have a mdb base (BD1) wich have no tables, the tables are in BD2 and are linked to BD1.
But BD1 grows, sometime just 20 or 30 bytes but sometimes more than 300k in one time. What Access stores ?
Is it possible to limit this ?
BD1 can be ran from many user and is stored on the server (not local) it is shared so i think i can't use option : compact data base when quit.
What are the best ways to prevent this ?
Thanks in advance.

I am trying to do something that I would think is very simple but I'm having a hard time with it. I have a form that consists of questions that the user is needed to answer. It displays the question, a combobox where the User can select 'Yes' or 'No', and a textbox where the user can input their comments. What I would like to do it the following: if the user selects 'Yes' as an answer, I want the corresponding comments box to be required.

Hello,
I am doing a huge report. I have everthing working great but have to use another control source for another sub total area. I am adding this to the report header section and since the number of rows returned can vary I need it grow or shrink. Listbox is the only way I could find to do this but where is the can grow setting? Or do I need to create a subreport set to that data?
Thanks
Joe

I posted this in the wrong thread yesterday
I just started learning Access and I have created a database with 53 records, 3 tables and 1 Split form. I creared a new yes/no field and I am attempting to display "Completed" in green for yes and "Not Completed" in red for no. I used the correct code in the format field:
"Not Completed "[Red];" Completed "[Green]
This worked for different field before I created the split form but now I cannot get the new field to display anything but check boxes regardless of what code I use. It won't even let me use the default yes/no, true/false or on/off options.
I've been studying this for about 2 weeks and I've figured out quite a bit but this one thing is really iritating me....
Help
Any comments would be appreciated
John

I've done some searches on this, and wasn't able to find an answer--just a hint that this isn't possible. So, I'm asking to be sure.
I know there is a limit to field size at 255--but is there ANY way around that?? I'm transferring a file where some fields have a lot of information, usually not more than 255, but what's there HAS to be there.
If there's no way around it, I'll just have to make an overflow field and move them manually. There have been too many changes made to the table already to start from scratch.
Can I just state... for the record.. that 255 is a stupid limit. It's stupid to HAVE a limit.. it's like Gates saying that we'll never need more then 24 or 500k or whatever the number was.
Thanks,
Siena

I have a complicated form I am working on. The problem is that there is A LOT of data on this form, and to evaluate the data, the end user really needs to see as much of it as possible. What was typed in text box 5, may affect how he or she will interpret what was typed in text box 1.
In a report, I can make the text boxes grow or shrink so that you can see all the text in the box.
Can the same thing be done in a form?
Can I make the size a sub-form expand to show all the rows of data in its datasheet?
The end user needs to be able to add notes to the end and you can't do that with a report.
Thanks,
David

I have a field that is in text format that is used as a discussion box. This limits the user to 250 characters because of Access limitations. I have tried the memo format but that will not allow me to query off of that field. How can I have this discussion field with unlimited text capability and also be able to query off of it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
