Forms :: Setting A Field On Form To Only Allow Text Input
Jan 9, 2014
Is there a way to setup the format on fields to only allow text inputs, no numbers wanted. I know I can do this at the table level but is some cases numbers are ok. So I want to code it so I can control when numbers are ok and when there not.

This is the first time that I have done any major work with forms. After I thought I had finished a problem came up. There are several forms that are use to input information into a table. When the form is opened it grabs an automated number for tracking. The problem is, that if the form is opened and then closed it creates a line of data with all null values.
What I would like to do is have the form open, the user fills out the information, and upon pressing the "save" button, the data will save to the table. I think I need to have each text box write to a variable and then save on the click event. Or I could be completely wrong and need to do something else.
i'm guessing this is something I would learn in Forms 101 if i had ever taken that type of course
Thanks

Hi there,
I know there have been a good number of questions about visibility in forms already but I couldn't find a solution to my problem (or maybe I just didn't get it).
Basically, I have a tabular form (more than one record displayed at once) and one the field is of the Yes/No type. For each record, I'd like to have a text box that displays 'pending', set as visible if the field value is 'Yes' and set as invisible if the field value is 'No'.
The table is as follows:
id : auto-number
Flag: Yes/No [Yes]
If I use the following code on the Flag button:
Private Sub Flag_AfterUpdate()
Me.pending2.Visible = Me.Flag.Value
End Sub
all the 'pending' text boxes appear and disappear together (instead of just the relevant one).
I thought of using another text box, with the same data source ('Flag') but which would set itself to visible or invisible wrt to its own value but I couldn't find a way to do it.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance !
and many thanks already for the forum and the contributions - it's been extremely helpful, esp. for a beginner.

I'm using Access 2007. I've created a table with two fields. "Novice and Recertification" as in combo box.
I put it on the form. Now the idea is when a user clicks Recertification, it shows up on the report. When the user clicks on Novice, it should be empty on report (Reason why I want to keep novice is so that we have a record of it.)
Now the challenge is I added another column, empty field for Novice and Recertification for Recertification. Thing is if I set the bound column, I select on an empty field on form and it will be empty on report. But I want the user to see Novice on the form and it must not show on the report.

I have recently started working for a new company and have inherited a nightmare of a system!
I have basic knowledge of Access and have been asked to stop duplicate entries under the same PO Number.
I have tried using DLookups by looking at other posts on the forum with no success.
The input form is called Purchase Order Entry, with the field called PO_No. The table is called Orders, with the field called Purchase Order Number.
I have tried to make the Purchase Order Number in the Orders table, the primary key but an error that it cannot contain a null value appears.
The Purchase orders may not be entered into the database in numerical order also.

Hi All,
I have only been playing with MS Access for a little while and I do not know all there is to know yet so I figured I come here to ask a question.
I use MS Access in web design and lately I have been experiencing a problem with my registration form which inserts new users into an MS Access database table.
Lately my registration form has become a target for spammers trying to inject spam in the form of html code into the password field of the online registration form.
I figured that I could deter this from happening by only allowing the letters A - Z and numbers 0 - 9 in the field and not allowing characters like < > and ? and ".
I assume I can do this with a validation rule but I'm unsure as to how I would go about setting this up. Limiting the field size to only 50 characters does not seem to work unfortunately.
Any help on how to set up a validation rule would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would like to enter a couple of alphanumeric groups into a field on an input form. After I enter an alphanumeric group, I hit the enter and the data will add into the field and refresh to empty box ready for next entry. If I continue to enter another group and hit enter, the next group will be added to original field with a comma and a space in between. build the VBA in after update event to accomplish the task.

Hello,
I need to create a field in an input form that is simply the concatenation of two other text fields. I have tried all sorts of things, but when I look at the data in the table that field.
I have a field called ID that I want to be created like this:
=Format([UniqueID],"00000") & "-" & [Mosque]
This works well in my output fields, but does not work the same way on the input form. It needs to be based on the currently input values from the current record. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
--Robert

I have an unbound form which has 2 unbound combo boxes on it, both based on the same table, but I have used a query for each one to created the sort order, one alphabetically by item name (cmbA) and the other numerically by the item number (cmbN) . I also have a text field (ID) upon which is based a report when the user clicks a button. Currently the text box (ID) has a control source of column 1 of cmbA and I have the report working perfectly if one selects from the name combo box (cmbA) What I want to do is allow the user to select from cmbN and have the control source of the ID text box equal the number the selected so the report button will work then also.
I have tried to set the control source after update of cmbN but all that does is blank out the ID text box. I have not done this before so I am sure I have done it incorrectly. I tried again this morning using me.ID.ControlSource = Me.cmbN and stepping through the code shows that the cmbN ControlSource is equal to ID but I can't make the code that follows use the results.

I have a form that adds a record to a table in the database.I want that when i choose a value from a combobox in the form, it will change the value of another textbox according to what value was choosed. So essentially what i did is simply go to the combobox AfterUpdate and there i used this code:
If Me.Combobox.Text = "Solid" Then
Me.TextBox1.Text = "grams"
ElseIf Me.Combobox.Text = "Liquid" Then
Me.TextBox1.Text = "ml"
End If
But i encounter 2 problems:
1. When i set a default value to the textbox (which i want to), the changing of the value in the combobox doesn't do anything whatsoever.
2. When i remove any default value from the textbox, the changing of the value in the combobox does change the textbox to the corresponding value but then gives run-time error 2185: "You can't reference a property or method for a control unless the control has the focus".

I'm trying to set an input mask for a text field.
The data will be 1 to 4 digits preceded by 1/
I have tried the masks 1/####;; , "1"/####;; 1/####;; , "1"/#### , '1'/#### but none work as if the first nubber entered is a 1 it replaces the 1 in 1/
If it is a 2 then it works fine.
I can set the 1 to and f (f/) and it works no problem.

I have a form where I would like to validate (restrict) choices in subsequent fields.
Example
Combobox choices are Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Space
In the form I have 4 fields = Material1, Material2, Material3, Material4. (all in same record on my table)
Basically I need the validation to not allow duplicates across the 4 fields.
something like....
[Material1] <> [Material2] or [Material3]or [Material4]
I am not sure of the proper syntax for the validation field in the Form Properties. Or if I am even putting it in the right place.

I want numeric only input for a certain textbox. I can use a ISNUMERIC function to test this, but prefer to use the Keypress event. So far got the following:
Code:
Private Sub txt_Position_KeyPress(KeyAscii As Integer)
Select Case KeyAscii
Case 8 ' backspace
Case Asc("1") To Asc("9")
Case Asc("-")
If InStr(1, Me.txt_Position.Text, "-") > 0 Or Me.txt_Position.SelStart > 0 Then
[code]...
It is working alright, except I want to avoid input that has multiple leading zeros, such as 00000 or -00000 (i.e. minus sign with mulitple leading zeros).

I'm trying to apply a custom input mask to a text box control. The text box must contain a 43 character string, broken into sections as follows :
AAAA-AAAAA-AAAAA-AAAAAA-AAAAAAAAA-AAAAAAAAAAA-AAA
(The format is quite strict and always comprises alphanumeric characters , hence I figured an input mask would, if nothing else, support the user to key the string accurately from its constituent parts...)
However, when I try to apply the input mask to the text box, I seem to run out of characters - I get as far as the below but the input mask wizard won't let me extend the mask to the final 8 characters
AAAA-AAAAA-AAAAA-AAAAAA-AAAAAAAAA-AAAAAAAAAAA-AAA
Are input masks restricted to 35 characters in length? And if so, how else could I make this, admittedly complex, text input more manageable for end users?

I an trying to create a data entry form (IndividualsEntryFm) to input data for fields such as (First Name),(Birthdate) etc., these to be saved to the (IndividualsTbl)
I also have another table (NamesTbl) which has family names etc. The two tables are linked by a (MainID) field. I want a combo box on the individualsEntryFm so that I can select the family name. Then I wish the empty fields for the IndividualsTbl to be available to enter data. When I press the save button I then want this data saved, together with the MainID from the combo box to the IndividualsTbl.
I have set the IndividualsTbl with a (PersonID) field as an auto number each individual therefore has a unique PersonID but may well share the MainID. I'm trying to link many people to the same address.

PeopleType: ID and description (e.g. 1 student, 2 teacher, etc)
PeopleDetails: PeopleType.id, name, gender etc
I have a form that contains subforms
On the Main section of the form the data comes from the PeopleDetails. I want the user to fill in this but I want the PeopleType.id to be set to e.g. 2 so that you can only key in teacher details.
I have been trying to set it using a macro SetValue but i cannot get it to work.

I want to be able to have two text boxes on my form that firstly concatenate the values inputted and then saves this string to a field.
It's a "new record" form that generates a new record in table "tblUsers".
txtB1 & txtB2 and the text boxes would represent First Name and Last Name.
But it can't be allowed to be saved as the acctual names. - Insead I'm looking for a way to take the first two or three letters of the name and concatenate these into one string of text and save that string to the field tblUsers.ConcatenatedName.
I.E.txtB1:"Carl"
txtB2:"Chapelle"
would generate "CarCha" and save that from the form to the field ConcatenatedName in tblUsers.
Btw, the values form txtB1 and txtB2 (Carl & Chapelle) cant be saved anywhere either!
Found the answer myself;
create a txtB3
And set that source to Left([txtB1];3) & " " & Left([txtB2];3)

I have a report that selects and shows records where a specified date field is within the range of 2 dates that the user enters.I created 2 unbound textboxes on the report with a Shortdate format and InputMask 0000-00-00;0;_.When user enter correct dates, then everything works fine: selection is properly done, the right records show up.But I have 2 problems:
1-the input mask is not working: the user can input anything!
2-the 2 unbound textboxes do not show the dates entered by the user.
It seems the value entered bu user does not go straight into the unbound textbox. How do I either intercept the value entered by the user directly into the unbound textbox or via a variable?

I have one table containing name of restaurant with its address etc. Then i created another table to list out the restaurant workers names and details. Just as an example,
Table:Restaurant
Restaurant name
Address line 1
Address line 2
Restaurant #
Website
Table:StaffContact
Staff Role
Name
speciality
email
phone
I have the main form that has all the restaurant details only. And i have another form containing the Staff information. Please note the two table have a relation and it works well.
Now to make it user friendly(basically easier for the lazy ones), I dragged the staff contact form on to my main form and displayed it as a datasheet(basically a sub form).
Now, my boss does not want users to add/delete on this sub form(datasheet). So,he wants me to create buttons to open new record of staff for each restaurant(new form)
My issue is with opening a new record to enter a new person to the staff list and give them a role as well in form view. The new form has
So i ran a Macro, with open form with Where condition
Code:
[Staffcontact]![Rest Name]=[Forms]![MainForm]![RestaurantName]
But, it does not work .
