View RepliesPROBLEM: String Manipulation
"Cleaning up Mom's Christmas address labels"
I need guidance on the best string manipulation functions (Instr, Left, Right) to cleanup my mother's Christmas address list of 300+ names.
I have successfully imported the text file into Excel and exported to Access; fieldnames: FULLNAME, ADDRESS, CITYSTATEZIP
I have found instructions on how to breakout FULLNAME field into FIRSTNAME and LASTNAME.
But within the FULLNAME field are many combinations of titles (Mr., Mr. & Mrs., Dr., HON.) with inconsistent periods applied.
Which one of string manipulation functions:
Instr
Left
Right
would be best for extracting these various titles from this name field?
I understand the concepts behind the above functions, but not enough experience using them to understand the tedious syntax or which string manipulation function would be best for extracting the varying title entries to a separate created field called TITLES.
So far, I have deduced this will be a multi-step process. But asking for guidance:
1.) Which string function is best suited for this?
2.) Example of the function syntax for an update query?
2.) Suggested order to administer update queries?...
to extract misc titles from the FULLNAME field.
I am a novice-casual Access user.
Thanks, Greg
(If someone would copyright these steps into a book called "Cleaning Up Mom's Christmas Address List"... I am sure they could retire from sales on Amazon. :-)
My database contains business names and addresses in separate fields (name, address, city, zip code, state, country)
Now I have to build the address block for labels.
If there were just US addresses it would be easy but a business can be located in any country with the problem being
that countries require the block to be build in a specific way (order of city, state, zip code).
In some cases a particular section has to be upper case as well.
Of course I can build it manually in a memo field but the with chance of something easily going wrong I like to automate it.
It does mean the same info will be stored twice which is basically a no no.
I'm thinking of making a separate table with records for all possible layouts and use those as a source for a memo field in the business table. However I can't oversee if that would work alright or not.
Or should there be a way to generate the blocks on the fly?
I am trying to generate standard Avery 2160 address labels. Fonts are small enough to allow for up to 4 print lines none of which quite touch. Players have entered their own names and addresses via a website form, so I we never quite know what is in the fields. If the player has a foreign address, it will all be entered in the address field, whereas US addresses have 1 or 2 lines in the address field, and city, state and zip in their respective fields. Line 1 is set as name, no shrink or grow. Line 2 is set as address, shrink and grow set to yes, and line 3 (text4) is set for city & state & zip, concatenated and trimmed in the query, shrink and grow no. The detail OnPrint event is the following:
Code:
Private Sub Detail_Print(Cancel As Integer, PrintCount As Integer)
Me.Text4.Visible = False
If Len(Text4 & vbNullString) > 1 Then
Me.Text4.Visible = True
End If
End Sub
The problem: Any row containing at least one label with 4 print lines pushes the next entire row of three labels down one line, throwing off the spacing of the labels. If I set line 3's can shrink to yes, then the label following the four-line label never has its text4.visible turned to yes, and the other problem (pushing next row down one line) persists. These labels were originally set up via the labels wizard (Access 2010).
How can I keep it from overflowing from one label to push down the next line? This just shouldn't be this hard!
So I have the following query which works perfectly (and will be use to create a report) but when the query runs to create the report I also want it to mail merge some of the items into word to be used on address labels.
Code:
SELECT Dunmow.Date, Dunmow.Undeliverable, Dunmow.Duplicate, Dunmow.[OTM with XXXXXX], Dunmow.[Landlords Salutation], Dunmow.[LL Address 1], Dunmow.[LL Address 2], Dunmow.[LL Address 3], Dunmow.[LL Address 4], Dunmow.[LL Address 5], Dunmow.[LL Postcode], Dunmow.[Letter 1], Dunmow.[Letter 2], Dunmow.[Letter 3], Dunmow.[Letter 4], Dunmow.[Letter 5], Dunmow.[Letter 6], Dunmow.[Letter 7], Dunmow.[Letter 8]
FROM Dunmow
WHERE (((Dunmow.Date)=DateAdd("d",-7,Date())) AND ((Dunmow.Undeliverable)=False) AND ((Dunmow.Duplicate)=False) AND ((Dunmow.[OTM with XXXXXX])=False) AND ((Dunmow.[Letter 1])=False));
So thats my query, What I want it to do is to take the following
[Landlords Salutation]
[LL Address 1]
[LL Address 2]
[LL Address 3]
[LL Address 4]
[LL Address 5]
[LL Postcode]
and use it for a merge item to create the labels required.
I have a standard word document/label document I wish to paste this into.
I have to print address labels. 10 x 3.8 cm labels 2 per row 14 per page on an A4 paper. Pretty straightforward one should say. But no. I play around with the margins, column heights and widths, row and column spacing page size wasting time. Is there a hidden and not documented relationship between those elements? For example how is the column height and row spacing linked together? How is this normally done in a professional way?
View 3 Replies View Relatedhello,
I have a main form with one child form. This child form also has a child form. This last child form has two tab controls it. When I tab through fields on the form, I have to reposition the form so that I can see these last fields. Otherwise I have to tab blindly through them. How do I get the form display the fields as I tab to them ? I have to design the forms on the larger size because the users like that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks !
I created a form with a continuous default view and created labels in the page header of the form. When I view the form, I can see the data from the form detail, but the lables in the page header do not appear. Why can't I see the labes in the page header ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a non standard size report (for printing labels)
The report is just over 10cm wide and just over 15cm deep.
I have solved the blank pages caused by exceeding the width but I'm still getting a blank page when I move some data down. I am still within 15 cm but it's throwing me a blank page. Even if I extend the in design mode depth to say 20cm (ie the height in Detail) it's throwing a blank page (I can see this in print preview).
I initially set up the report (it's a long time ago so memory fades) using the label wizard setting up a label 4*6 inches (10.16 * 15.24 cms) and it is this i'm trying to tweak. Is there a property I'm missing somewhere?
I have a form where the user puts in a email address, eg test @ myserver.net
So the link opens a new mail it has to be prefixed by mailto:
How can I automatically replace the address the user enters with the format mailto:test@myserver.net
Hope you can help!
I have an access table which lists a customers address, however, if the customer has a temporary address it will also list that on a separate line -
CustID Address Type
1234 5 The Street P
1234 12 The Street T
2345 13 The Road P
3456 12 The Avenue P
Where P = Permanent and T = Temporary
I want to set up a query to show the permanent address where there is only one address, but where the customer has a temporary address also, I want to list the temporary one instead.
Thanks
I have a form bound to a table which stores contact info for a person. I have two controls that are email_address and website_address. I set them both as hyperlinks.
So now when the user clicks on the email_address Outlook opens a new message with an email_address in the To field. (I had to use a function found on this forum to replace the "htttp" with "mailto" on AfterUpdate event in order for this to work properly.) However, now trying to add some other features to my DB I ran into problems listed below. I wonder if I should have rather left that control as Text instead of Hyperlink, and use the DoCmd.SendObject on doubleclick event instead of using the above solution.
How people usually store email addresses and enable emailing on click?
The problems I ran into:
1) My main form is in popup mode and therefore right click on the hyperlink does not give an option to edit the hyperlink
2) I copied a function from this forum which gathers a list of emails and sends one message to the emaillist. However, my email list instead of generating as:
email1@a.com; email2@b.com
it generates as:
email1@a.com#mailto:email1@a.com#; email2@b.com#email2@b.com#
I guess I could extract the email using vba (not sure how), but I still don't know how to solve issue number 1. So maybe it is better to siwtch the field to plain text and forget the hyperlinks?
Thanks,
Mariusz
PS. What procedure on double click would open a default browser, since I also have to deal with web addresses and thought of turning them into text controls?
I have a report which includes several subreports. There will be times when a subreport prints partially on one page and completes on the next. I don't always want to break to a new page with this subreport. However, I would want to break to a new page if the subreport cannot fully print on the current page.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a report that lists states and cities within the states. When a state name happens to be at the end of the page the individual cities appear on the next page with no State heading. I solved the second page problem by setting the "repeatSection = Yes" in the Section Header (though I haven't shown that in the example below).
But the previous page (which just shows the State Name and no cities looks dumb. Is there some sort of solution.??
(Actually I would also like any State that continues to a next page to not just have the state name but something like
" Colorado (Continued)" Is there anything I can do in VB to make a page break if the section is going to print but therer isn't enough room for one detail line?
This is what I currently see
Alaska
Ancorage
Prudo Bay
California
Whittier
Anaheim
Colorado
------------------------Page Break ---------------------------------
Denver
Pueblo
Colorado Springs
Deleware
Dover
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I have a report and it has controls (labels representing column titles) in the page header. Now when I print the report - if it happens that the last page has no detail records - but there is text boxes and so forth in the report footer. Is there a way to not display the page header on the last page?
I have a report where the last page shows the page header - and the field/column labels on the page header - but for which there is no detail records left to display - on the last page. There is report footer information that should display. It just looks weird because the field/column labels show at the top of the page - but there is no data remaining to print under them on that last page.
Hi All,
I have a data access page needs a filter by a dropdownlist, the dropdownlist used is a html control and I use javascript to filter the data programmaticlly in the onchanged event of the control.
MSODSC.DataPages(0).Recordset.Filter="AppID = 3";
My problem is, when this statement runs, the page refreshes. But I don't need the page refreshes, it set the dropdownlist text to the default text, not the value user select. The browser is IE7.
How can I stop the page refresh itself?
Thanks and Happy New Year!!
I have one-page forms which print a second page, blank except for a block of grey shading at the top. I have tried moving the content of the form up but that doesn't eliminate the second page. If I look at print preview, every second page of the entire database shows up as blank, regardless of where that happens to appear in the record.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create an invoice report. I want to add all the costs from the detail section in my footer. I have accomplished this in either the Report footer and/or the page footer, but the problem is that the report footer doesn't go to the bottom of the page, and the page footer doesn't go to just the last page. I have tested a bunch of suggestions that don't seem to work.
1. Print page footer with Report header = NO - only works if your report is two pages or more.
2. Private Sub PageFooterSection_Format(Cancel As Integer, FormatCount As Integer)
If Page = Pages Then
Me.[TextBoxName].Visible = True
Else
Me.[TextBoxName].Visible = False
End If
End Sub
The Page functions worked, but it did not change the results from page to page. If it was a two page report, then the if statement is false and the text box was not visible on page 1, but it also was not visible on page 2.
to automatically create a second, third, fourth... page depending on how many characters are in the narrative. The only other thing needed to be changed is the page# of Page#.
So right now my form looks like below
CAD#
Person name
Charge
Narrative
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
"
Officer name date page # of #
Thanks in advance.

Hi All
I have added the Allen Browne Calendar 2k control to my form.
My form consists of 4 pages. On pages 2 and 3 I have subforms and on page 4 I have Personal data. Page 1 is general data and the Calendar is on Page 1.
What is happening is that the Calendar is also being displayed on my 4th page, in the same position as page 1. When I try to move it, cover it or delete it from page 4, it is also gone from page 1.
Any suggestions please?
Many thanks
Tee :(
I've used the following code on the footer on print procedure:
Private Sub PageFooterSection_Print(Cancel As Integer, PrintCount As Integer)
Me.PageFooterSection.Visible = (Me.[Page] = 1)
End Sub
This works fine when you view it in print preview, but the footer don't show up at all when you actually print it.The reports default view itself is set print preview.
I have made a report on my query. The page setup is all around merging 0.2" and page size A4
When i view this report in preview it looks all my data whatever i want in a page but after every page it will generate a blank page.
I have included my report.
I have a form with six tabbed pages on it. Since data entry follows in a logical order I would like to put a command button on the bottom of each page (subform) that can be used to go to the next page. What I am going to though? If i put a command button (open form) then it opens the whole form not as a subform on a tabbed page. if I try and put a command button (open page) then it will not let me enter the page number. Hope that makes sense! Any ideas
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a report that has the dates go accross the page and not down the page .
Example:
Need:
Jan 2014 Feb 2014 March 2014
Ans so on. I will also need datat under each date.
I am having issues with the reports to give me the output that I need.
I have seen large projects in which there are clearly several printed database reports printed out to make one booklet.
1. How does one get page numbers for multiple reports to go in sequence instead of starting over again at 1 for each report.
2. How can you add a page reference in one report to something in another report?
Do you have to do these things by hand or is there a way to create a something with auto numbering capabilities? Do you do it by importing the reports to MS Word and creating a master document?
