General :: Cannot Use ODBC To Import From / Export To / Or Link To External Microsoft Access

Mar 16, 2014

I am trying to create an ODBC link to a copy of the Northwind data base.I am running Win7 on a 64 bit operating system but am keeping office running as 32 bit for Access, Excel , Visio etc due to the fact that I have a lot of old apps tied to them.

When I attempted initially to create a new system DSN ODBC connection it only allowed me to use SQL drivers. (No plurry good) So after some searching I found out that I could use a file in C:WindowsSysWOW64 called "odbcad32.exe" which has allowed me to view /use the total list of drivers to import data.So I can set up a DNS ODBC named Northwind1 and I can access the database without problems using Excel. However if I try to use the same ODBC link in Access to connect to Northwind1 I get the following error message:"You cannot use ODBC to import from export to, or link an external ?Microsoft Access or ISAM database table to your database".

HELP!!! Error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Invalid SQL Statement Expect

Mar 27, 2007

My main experience is with MySQL and PHP so I'm kindof stumbling around in the dark here. Heres my story:

We recieved a new server and migrating from (Windows Server 2000, IIS 5.0, Access 2000) to (Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0, Access 2003) has been nothing but problems.

I have setup IIS to work with ASP, I've also setup a system DSN. The access file was copied over from the previous server. We're running Access 2003 and now I can't seem to get this ASP script to work.

When I try to upload a file to the script I get this error:

Line: 42
Char: 7
Error: HELP!!! Error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Invalid SQL statement expected 'DELETE','INSERT','PROCEDURE','SELECT', OR 'UPDATE'.
Code: 0

Here is the part of Connect.asp that errors:

Its included in a file called FileRead.htm here is the part that refers to the error lines:

I set an alert after this line but it doesn't pop up.

ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY GREATLY APPRECIATED. I'll be checking this very frequently.

Sincerly,

General :: Change Link From One External Database To Another?

Feb 26, 2013

I've got an Access 2010 application that currently links to a SQL Server 2000 database. I need to change the link to a SQL Server 2008 database on a different server. Where do I go to change the link? When I click on External Data, ODBC Database, I only get an option to import source data. I don't want to import any data. I just want the application to link to a different external database. If I go ahead and click OK, I choose my ODBC connection and log in to the 2008 database. Now I've got a list of "import objects" to choose from. I choose one table (just for testing; I actually want to link with all tables), it says it imported successfully, but when I view the data in that table from Access, it's the same old 2000 database data.

Import External Table, Access Does Not Like Field Name

Sep 27, 2005

Hi,

I would like to link to an external data source (table) from MS Access 2003. I attempt to use the 'Import' feature to do this, and select 'ODBC Connection'. I am trying to connect to an application called 'Action Remedy'. I make the connection fine, but when Access attempts to import the table, it does not like one of the Action Remedy field names, and the Import aborts. The name is something like "Call Status-History.Closed.Time". Obviously, Access does not like this field name. And the chances of getting it changed (on the A/R backend are slim to none). Thus, my question: Is there away around this ?

Thanks !

Import Into Access Tables Using ODBC

Nov 28, 2006

Hi,

I want to import into an MDB table a csv file.

I'm trying to use the bulk copy table.

my function is:

SQL = "SELECT * INTO [my_table] FROM [ODBC;Driver=Micrsoft text driver (*.txt; *csv) ;Dbq=c:\;Extensions=asc,csv,tab,txt;].table.csv"

db.OpenEx( "Driver=Microsoft Access Driver .mdb);DBQ=c:\access.mdb;", CDatabase::noOdbcDialog );

db.ExecuteSQL( SQL );

when i run this function i get an error : "You cannot use ODBC to import from, export to, or link an external Microsoft Jet or ISAM database table to your database"

when i try to import in the same way a dbf file (insted the csv file) with VFP it's working well.

what seems to be the problem? how can i fix it? or if some one know how can i import a large csv file into access DB in an efficient diffrent way?

thanks ishay

Access And Outlook Integration Without Import/export

Oct 18, 2005

Hi all,

I have an access Db that I use to manage contacts etc. I regularily send out newsletters and emails to the contacts in that Db.

I want to know if there is a way I can essentially track the emails from access in outlook.
eg. based on field "email" it can see the emails incoming and outgoing in Outlook and makes a new record in my table "communications" that also tracks phone calls and other comm's.

Tbls - Contacts, Communications, Company

It would be great if all email communications could just automatically be listed in the access table communications with a link to the email in outlook (not the actual email, only the subject line and a hyperlink to the email)

I have been scouring the web for something to do this and have found lots of kinda's or not quite's. I don't want to import my outlook email to a table if possible.

I run Outlook and Access 2003 (Office 2003) on XP SP2 box.

Thanks Heaps if you have any idea what I am after!

Excel Import Link To Access Is Broken - Data Won't Update

Apr 12, 2014

I have a workbook which has links to access to import data. I have to have the information in Excel for a couple reasons:

1.) Many of our customers don't have Access.
2.) The customers use a "discount calculator" to apply their own discounts.

They also use it to then apply their own margin mark ups to be able to then use to quote to their customers. So a static report/pdf for them to look at doesn't work.

I've begun to create links from a number of queries in Access, which work fine. My problem is when I go to update the data. I'm not getting the following error coming up:

The database definitely hasn't moved. And I've run the queries in q, and there aren't any problems there. I've looked this error up and I'm seeing that it could mean that I've got some corruption going on.

Before I hit my main q, I should also note: I'm running all of this on a Citrix network. I should also note that it's a consulting gig. Once I'm done, I won't be available to fix major issues like this.

General :: Large Table Import / Way To Import Tables To Access

Sep 17, 2013

I want to make a database of diseases (need to learn them for school and would like a serchable database on my smart phone for future reference).
Unfortunately spent a lot of time making hundreds of pages of word tables before i realized a database would be better. See attached image or pdf. Is there a way to import the tables to Access?

I need to preserve the hierarchic info in the nested bullet point lists. E.g. under treatment i might have a point called Acute treatment, with sub-levels, Step 1, Step 2, etc. with their own sub-levels. I need to maintain this relational hierarchic info.

Modules & VBA :: Export Data To Excel Then Link That Workbook Back To MS Access

Apr 17, 2014

I have a question about the best way to go about linking an excel workbook to an ms access table? I have researched hyperlinks and attachments and ole objects and I am not sure what is the best option. I believe hyperlinks will be best, because the attachments will bloat the database, but I am not sure how to go about doing that in vba? My process is such:

1)Users enter project information
2)Users enter the sample information for each project
3)The project and sample information is combined by a query
4)The user clicks a button to print forms, which runs the query and opens an excel workbook template.
5)The data is exported to a specific sheet in the workbook
6)Using vba in excel, the data is used to populate cells in different sheets depending on critera.

After all of this is accomplished, I need the user to SAVE AS the excel workbook and it needs to be "attached" to the ms access 'project' table. I am not sure what is the best way to link this back to the database. I would like to automate it with vba if possible.

General :: External Form That Interfaces With Access

Jan 15, 2014

I'm looking for a form system that will interface with Access.

At present, we collect information from clients and store it in an Access 2003 database. I have designed my form as an Excel spreadsheet. I use Excel as we are missing the reference files that will enable Access to work with Word and some other programs. The Excel form is emailed to the client, who fills it in & emails it back to us.

To restrict entry of certain fields to a list of values, I use lists in the Excel Workbook, which emulate the lookup tables in Access. I am expecting to add more values to the lookup tables, which would mean that I have to constantly update the lists on the Excel spreadsheet, with the lists eventually becoming quite large.

I have written an import program in Access which imports the Excel worksheet/s into the relevant Access tables. This all works, except the entire process is very manual.

What I would like is to use an external form program that would do the following:

1. Allow me to design something that looks nicer than a spreadsheet
2. Can be updated with my lookup tables so I don't have to manually edit the lists (as in Excel)
3. Can be imported into Access (export to an xls or csv file would be ok if not into Access)
4. Is portable, self-contained & can be emailed to the client so doesn't require them to log into any of our systems, including our web site. The user can fill it out with the data being validated at the same time & then return it to us.

Link To External Data

Apr 24, 2006

I have a fairly complex database that will have many users. I am looking for a way to sort of link the data in a text box to an external database or text file of some sort to know who created a new record in it.

For example:

The database is on a network drive. Each person who will have access to it has a small file in their C: drive that contains their name. Whenever a new record is created, the name on that file is added to the record to know who is it that added it.

How do I do that?

Thanks
