General :: FE On Local Machine To Limit Network Traffic Only?
Mar 27, 2013
I've been told numerous times that a shared database should have each user with their own FE. I've also seen in a number of places that the FE should be on the user's local machine. Is the FE on the local machine to limit network traffic only, or is there a greater reason for it?
I was under the assumption that the seperate FE's were to lower the probability of corruptions and sharing of local temp files... If this is the case, is it reasonable enough to have each user have their own FE in their own user folder on the network?

We are shortly going to start using tablet PCs over a GPRS bearer circuit for some of our employees to update our core business system from within customers homes. To do this we have purchased a very streamlined version of our core system, designed to work at a reasonable speed even over a normal GSM connection.
The employees that will be using this also use an access database that I've created though. Whilst it isn't crucial that they can use this while they're out and about, it might be useful and it's something I am interested in looking into. In order to make it feasible though, I think I would probably need to dramatically reduce the amount of data transferred between the be and fe due to the high cost of data over GPRS (as well as the speed). So I have a few questions.
1) Am I right in thinking that if I am using ms access as a backend, all the processing is done at the front end? i.e. I run a query on the front end, the whole table is retrieved from the back end and then filtered at the front end?
2) Is there any way to get around this? Or would it require switching the back end to SQL Server or something?
3) Is there any way of measuring how much data (in bytes, kb etc) is being transferred between the front end and back end while running queries, updating records etc.?
I'll probably think of some more questions but this will do for starters. :)

Hi,
I'm trying to establish the link from my local mdb to an mdb on a commercial server I'm using.
The problem is there's no way to locate the remote access database when using the Link Table wizard.
Anyone knows how to establish that connection??
Thanks in advance!

i have done a database for a library that enables the user to enter the information about the books and search for it, the administrator have the right to enter the info about the books and edit and search the others have more limited rights depending on which group they belong, i used for the connection (currentProject) because i did all the forms and tables in one DB
a friend from this forum told me and i think he s right, that if i want to put it on the network i have to separate the forms and the tables ie save the tables and the queries on another database that i put on the network
i have a problem
1- im not sure how to connect to another database can i do it like this
Dim conDB as ADODB.connection
set conDB=new ADODB.connection
conDB=openDatabase("the path") or not
2-i have done the result form with a record source (search-query) and then inserted the fields into the form in the design view
can i do that with a query if it was from another database or i need to write it all in code (taking into consideration that i havent found how to insert datacontrols and do the binding, because im using french access, that s why i assigned automatically a record source for the form)
thanks in advance

I have a database on my laptop that normally accesses a backend on a local server. However when the laptop isn't on that network I would like the database to switch to a local backend on the harddrive. What is the best way of doing this?
I was thinking on startup a simple check to see if the network file exists and if not use the local one but I don't know if this is the best way of doing it.

Hi! I work at a company where a same DB is being opened by more than one user, is there any way to allow many users be working on a same DB?
Actually I cannot even open it if its already opened. It appears another file with a "lock", which seems to be protecting the DB.

I am facing a issue in accessing my db file in server. I just splitted my database into front end and back end , placed in a local folder which is shared in network . I opened the files in network from my colleague machine and everything was working fine yesterday .. but right now i am getting error like "the network path is not found " 0X80070035 which tells that check whether the source machines is able to accept file sharing ..I googled and tried 2 solutions Like turning off windows firewall and enabling NetBIOS Over TCP/IP..

I have developed a database in Microsoft Access 2013. I wish to install and run that database on another machine on which I have already installed the MS Access Runtime.
In order to allow the database to run correctly on the target machine, I need to add two Trusted Locations - one for the front-end database and another for the back-end database.
The folder paths on the runtime machine are different to those on the development machine, so how do I add Trusted Locations (on my development machine) which remain valid when the database is copied to the target machine?
Must I trick it by simply creating an identical, dummy folder structure on the development machine (would this even work?), or is there a more elegant way?

I am trying to make a stand-alone version of a database whose files are mysql files connected by odbc. When I copy the linked files and save them as local files, they come in with the auto-numbered id field still marked as the primary key, but as just "number" and not auto-number. It does come in marked required. I can't change the type to auto-number, so it errors when the user tries to add a record using the input form. Also, I have the fields used to keep true/false data set up in the mysql files as integers with default values of 0. When they are saved as local tables, they come in marked required but without a default value. Hence, when a user enters a new record in a form that doesn't use that particular check box, it errors. What am I missing? Is there an easy way around this?

Hi,
I am new to access and databases. I have taken on the job of creating a new one form scratch for my company. We are an advertising company and want a system to log, track and search all jobs that go through our traffic and production departments.
I have attached the basic plan for what I think we will need. Can anyone have a look at this and tell me if it looks ok or am I going in the wrong direction. The database will record many different job types with each having unique information in it. I was thinking of splitting these job types in to separate tables but always looking up a value JobsID in the jobs table in order to provide a unique number. And would it be or how would ii go about linking jobs with each other? So one JobID may have more than one job type linked to it ?
Sorry if I have not explained this well but I am trying to learn as I go along.
Thanks brian….

I have an MS Access accdb with linked SQL Server 2012 ODBC tables. I am working on a procedure to copy data from local tables to these linked tables (identical schema). I did a simple
Code:
DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT INTO linkedTable SELECT * FROM localTable"
This works, but is very slow. Way too slow. (INSERT copies the data one record at a time).
I would like to copy the data in a bulk operation, or operations that I can execute programmatically.

My DB is split into BE and FE into about 5 Laptops. The DB is for entering personal information of pensioners.
sometimes it becomes necessary to take a computer away from the office to capture data of sick and aged pensioners. Now if you take the server (BE) out all the other clients (FE) will not work, and if you take a client out it wont work.
To solve the issue I decided to install a standalone version of the db in all the clients. If out of the network, the standalone DB is used and later captured data to betransfered to the server.
My question: Is there a code that I can use to check if my server is available to start the FE or if unavailable to start the standalone?

Using Access 2007
Win 07
I've managed to grab the network login and place it on the data entry form which populates a table with said login...
I would like to know where and how I would use that same login ID elsewhere in db. I only want that loginID to be able to use forms and reports associated with it.
would I use in queries? on open events? not sure where to place this.

I have a database that is designed with a front and back end, with the FE linked to the BE. Some potential customers want to play around with the database, and the easiest way for me to get them access to it would be for me to combine the FE and BE and just give them a copy of that. how to link a table, and I know how to import a table. What I'm unsure of is how to cleanly convert a linked table to a local table.

Some of my users have laptops and usually at work finish, they remove their laptops. The issue occurs when they restart their laptops again without network access and then they have some dialog boxes showing below messages:
"Your network access was interrupted and you should close MS access and restart."
When OK is pressed, some other messages like " Object invalid or not set" appears and by pressing many time OK, it does not reset. Last option is to use "Ctrl+Alt+Del".

I have a A2007 database that is split to a shared server that is experiencing unidentified network problems. While working in the front-end users receive the following message periodically:
Quote:Your network access was interrupted. To continue close the database and then open it again. If the users are working in a form including queried data, the data is lost and the file crashes. This happens even though the front-end is on the user's computer and no tables are currently being queried. My question is why must the network be stable even though the database is split and queries are not occurring? The form's record source is a table though. But even with this the record source connection is not needed until the form is closed.

I am having trouble relinking tables in my Front End database to my Back End database. My BE DB is on a network share and when I try using the link table manager to navigate to the correct folder I get an error message upon entering the network share folder that says:
The Microsoft Access database engine cannot open or write to the file "etworkfolder" It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view and write its data.
I have permission to the folder and have ensured that this folder is a trusted location path.

I have a small Access DB (multi-user) on a network that keeps turning into a read-only DB, with a message bar saying please save as . . . and it will not let you complete that. It seems to lock the application, and when I can get everyone out and copy the file out I can finally get it back to its normal state.

Database: Access 2007
I have designed a touchscreen input system using Visual Basic.net and this writes to an Access Database. Each Touchscreen has its database locally so it can still work even if there are Network problems.
Now what I would like to do is have all these local databases write to a central database say every minute but only write new records to the central database. The Central Database can either be Access or SQL.
What is the best way to do this?

I have set up a group of 3 buttons to select between on my form which works fine.
However I want this to be a bit more visual than it is so Id like to introduce a traffic light system which lights up RED ORANGE or GREEN depending on which one has been checked.
I am not too sure how I would go about achieving this, im not sure if you can import images and hide them or show them depending on the selection or if it requires something further.

I have Access as front end and SQL Server as back end. The Access application is placed on a common network drive for theusers to access it. The compact on close option is enabled when the access application is closed.
I have a local copy of the access app. When I close the app, it takes ony a few seconds. But when on a network drive, it is taking 2 mins.I just wanted to know if the time taken to close the application on the network drive can be brought down without disabling the compact on close option.
