General :: Holding Down Shift Key While Opening Database
Oct 16, 2013
Normally when I hold down the shift key when opening an Access database it opens in development mode. When I do this on a certain database it does not. It still opens in program mode. If I hit F11 it goes into a sort of development mode but I do not get the ribbon bar at the top etc.
Has something been set on this database to stop it opening in development mode? Can I switch it off?
Believe it or not, we just upgraded from Access 2000 to 2003. In Access 2000, I have my dbs set up so that you must hold the shift key down while opening the db in order to see the database window. In 2003, holding down the shift key isn't working. Is there another way to get the database window open (or am I doing something terribly wrong)?
I bring up the database (Access 2003 / XP) by holding down the shift-key. As designed, the shift-key by-passes running the autoexec macro automatically. I then run the autoexec macro with the vba code viewer up so I can F8 down through all the code. The autoexec macro is one statement - RUNCODE which executes a vba FUNCTION Startup(). Everything seems to work great, but when the function goes to EXIT FUNCTION I assumed it's completed. BUT the next F8 GOES TO THE Startup() FUNCTION again and runs through the code over and over.
I don't think it does this when the program actually runs normally (don't by-pass the autoexec), but why it's running the function over and over again when I'm F8'ing through the code.
Is it something peculiar with the AUTOEXEC in MS ACCESS? Can I trust that it really does ONLY RUN ONE TIME?
I can manually stop the AutoExec macro from running by holding down the shift button - how do you do it by VBA? I'm opening the db from Excel, and I don't want the Switchboard to display ...
Question. Our db is protected, in other words, when an user opens the db, no possibility to open any menu is availiable. However, if the user is smart (some are :D) then opening the db with the [SHIFT]-key held down the db opens and those users can edit the tables etc.
It would be just enough for our situation to have the possibility to set a password to the [SHIFT]-key when opening the db.
Is it possible? and if it is, please explain to me how
I was exploring using User-level permissions on databases so I, the admin, can have full permissions to edit/change etc. the database and certain users can only add/edit data. But I inadvertently have now set Access to ask me for a password for any db I open. Even if it's my own personal one. Can I set up Access to only ask for login info on certain db's, not all. I know that 2010 did away with User and group level permissions but was able to add it back through customizing the ribbon and adding this feature back to it.
In the database that I use at work sometimes when we OPEN it we get an immediate error saying out of memory, therefore we close it and reopen and all is good.
This is a problem when the average user logs on as they don't close it, they just continue on and then start experiencing issues.
I thought that the memory was supposed to clear when you close the database.
We run the debugger and no errors are ever found, we also run the compact and repair.
This can happen 1 in 10 or maybe 20 times when we open the database.
I am having problems opening my databases. Access automatically opens them in 'Read Only' mode, and I cannot find a way to avoid this - so I can never add data to the original tables ....
Is there a way to open an Access Database from a batch file or VBS file wait for 20 seconds and then close the Access file. Preferably I would like the Access file to run in either invisible or minimized mode. I would like the Access Database to close again after the 20 seconds has elapsed.
(The reason for this is so that the Database can refresh itself from Sharepoint on another users machine so that the excel reports on his machine are up to date).
I have a split database with multiple users. Since I split the database, it runs slower than the unsplit version. I understand this happens. I would like to have a message pop up when the database is loading. It takes approx 2 mins to load. Users get impatient and start clicking. So, I wanted to have a message pop up to let them know it is opening.
I have the same problem with forms loading, I have 5 forms and each takes about 4 secs to load, so thought about a loading message there too.
In my database there are fields of type Date/Time, their default value is set to now(). But the problem is that those fields are automatically filled up by English system date. I want my own country's date format, without changing my system date format. So I decided, whenever database is opened it should ask for a date, so the user will give today's date and that date will be used automatically on those fields.
I have created a Db in MS Access 2010 and under Options > Current Database I have done the following:
- Used drop down to select a form I want to display on opening - Unchecked display navigation pane - Unchecked allow full menus
This works how I want it to, perfectly. I then send it to a client who also has MS Access 2010 and when they open the file the form I have told it to open doesn't open, the navigation bar is displayed (with the form I want to open highlighted) and the full menus show but are locked.
What's going on? Is it some security setting the client has that isn't letting the opening procedure execute properly?
Everytime i want to make some changes to my "Testing" Database , always got somebody using it / opening it...
I am trying to create a button , the function of the button is close "Testing" access database who using it or opening it , Example : 5 users included me in a company , when I click a button , 4 of them will received a notification with close "Testing" database message , can do that ?
In Access 2010 I'm setting and unsetting the bypass shift key property - set to true for users and set to false for me, the developer. No problem but what I can't figure out is how do I work out whether it is set or not?
To set the AllowBypassKey property to False, follow these steps: 1. Start Access. 2. Open an Access database project. 3. In the Database window, point to Macro on the Tools menu, and then click Visual Basic Editor. 4. In the Visual Basic Editor, click Immediate Window on the View menu. 5. Type the following code or paste the following code in the Immediate window, and then press ENTER.CurrentProject.Properties.Add "AllowBypassKey", False
6. Close the Visual Basic Editor, and then close the Access database project. 7. Open the Access database project. Try to bypass the startup options that are set for the Access database project by holding down the SHIFT key while you open the Access database project.
The functionality of the SHIFT key that permits you to bypass the startup option is disabled. Although you hold down the SHIFT key to bypass the startup options, the startup options are executed. You cannot bypass the startup options.
I am able to bypass the shift key so I can disable ribbon and all menus at startup.
But the issue I have is anytime someone makes a copy of the database or it is their first time opening it they get prompted with the security warning:
"Security Warning - some active content has been disabled, click here to enable"
and it gives them complete access to see the back end of the database because while that warning message is popped up ... before they click "enable" they can go do anything in the database including see tables, data, and vba.
Once they click "enable content" that first time the bypass takes effect and the ribbon and all menus disappear, but if they dont click it they can navigate all around the db
Is there a way to open a form from a form in a different database? I'm pretty sure it needs to be done in VBA and have seen some code floating around that suggests it can be done, but I'm thinking there's more to it, like maybe one or both of the DB's need to be in a different format?
Well, I am facing one problem..in my application; I need to show all forms / reports name of other database( .mdb ) file without opening the other database physically. I tried a lot but didnt succeded. I tried with below code..
Set AcApl = New Access.Application Call AcApl.OpenCurrentDatabase(strfolder, True) Set AcProj = AcApl.CurrentProject
Set frm1 = AcProj.AllForms
intCount = frm1.Count
But here wen the second line AcApl.opencurrentdatabase get executed at that time the database get open physically, and i dont want that..So is there any other way around..If so..please please help me..
Hi all. I have been asked to develop two DB apps in Lotus Notes which filled me with despair since I would rather do this in Access 2003 but aparantly Notes can hold files. I know Access can link to files stored on a network but can Access match up to Notes in this feature and actually hold files the ame way as Notes ?
Hello, I've got a text box on my form header with a calculation in the control source that adds values from other text boxes on my form. My problem is that since the calculation is in the control source of my text box I can not save the sum of the calculation to a field on the forms bound table. Is there a way to move this calculation out of the control source and still have the calculation populate this text box with the sum of the calculation, so I can choice a field in which to save this calculations sum.
Calculation in the text box control source= [Tot40yrcomp]+[Totfelt1536]+[Totfelt3036]+ there will be many more other text boxes added.
It was suggested to me to have a Variable hold the calculation, I’ve been trying to write a variable but nothing seems to be working, I’ve been trying to place this variable I made into the after update and before update of the text box Nothing works I get all 0.00 in the form header text box, Here’s the code for the variable I made, can some one see if it looks correct.
Dim calcVariable calcVariable = [Tot25yrcomp] + [Me.feltstot] mat25yr = calcVariable
I was wondering if I need to say Me.mat25yr = calcVariable
