General :: Linking Split DB Using ODBC

I'm nearly at the point of distributing my database. I have been writing this on my laptop and I need to get it working on a Terminal Server and Data Server at the data centre that host our system which is a remote location. The Terminal Server has Access Runtime only, not the full version of Access. This obviously presents me with a bit of a quandary as I still need to be able to maintain the software but do not want my laptop to link via the web to the database to do so. My solution is to take a copy of the database onto my laptop when I need to do anything, which is not a problem. My issue is that I'd like a simple way of maintaining the link between the Front end and the Back end so that if I upload a new copy of the back end or the front-end it will not throw the toys out the pram at the users!
I understand that I am best to put the back end onto the data server and to then distribute the front end to each user. Each user has their own account on the Terminal Server so I can put the front end into their userprofile or something similar (if it is true that I can't just give them all shortcuts to the same front-end that is?!).
I would like to try and get the back end to link to the front end via ODBC as if this is the case I can use the File DNS path on the terminal Server so each user has access and can use File DNS on my laptop when I need to do any updates on my copy so that I am not having to do anything too complicated with the linking of the front and back end due to the differing file systems. Is this possible to do or am I completely going at this the wrong way and missing an easier method?

I have a split database. I have secured the mde sufficiently but I need to secure the back end so that no one could link to tables in it. If I introduce a password to the back end is this going to require those using front end to supply the password? If not then this could be good solution.
As the database is on the network drive, is there any other way to prevent people to link to the db? Can I hide the db in the network drive? Or should I hide tables in the BE. Should these still be available to be linked?

Hello.
When linking a table via ODBC I usually get asked to pick a field that contains unique values.
This is all very well but I have hundreds of tables to link to across a slow network and would like to leave it running for a few hours.
With the current set up, this is not possible and I have to keep clicking on ok every few seconds/minutes.
Is there anyway to avoid this message so I can just leave it running until it finishes.

Hi all,
I am a newbie to the forum and dont know much about it yet so please point me in the right direction if i am doing anything wrong..
My task is to create a spreadsheet that will automaticaly update on opening. The data i require is in Sage Line100 which is very difficult to work with(for me with limited database knowledge).
Because i need to link tables i thought that the best way would be to create a link with Access and create the report format that i need so that it could be exported to Excel.
1: Is this possible(or am in dreamland)
2: How do i refresh the data or is it possible to make it dynamic
3: how do i create a report that saves as an excel file and refreshes when opened
Thank you for any help that can be provided(bowing down to superior knowledge)

On a webserver certian files are stored above the root directory. Therefor the user of the website can never access those files directly. But he is utlizing that file.
For example:
We use Hotmail to see our mails. but we never download the complete database.
So is there a method that we can secure the backend using roaming profiles or something else so the user has a link to the backend but cant directly access the backend.

I have split a few different MS Access databases before with the BE on a shared drive and the FE installed on all users' local machine. In this instance, I have three ODBC connections bringing in data to my tool from an outside database once a day. Is it faster to store the odbc connections on the FE or BE when I split them?

I am trying to make a stand-alone version of a database whose files are mysql files connected by odbc. When I copy the linked files and save them as local files, they come in with the auto-numbered id field still marked as the primary key, but as just "number" and not auto-number. It does come in marked required. I can't change the type to auto-number, so it errors when the user tries to add a record using the input form. Also, I have the fields used to keep true/false data set up in the mysql files as integers with default values of 0. When they are saved as local tables, they come in marked required but without a default value. Hence, when a user enters a new record in a form that doesn't use that particular check box, it errors. What am I missing? Is there an easy way around this?

I have a back end 2002 DB. I would like to disallow access to this through odbc connection. Is there some way this can be achieved? Thie directory where it is located is unfortnately cannot be restricted as the front end mde also resides there.

I have a Access front end connected to a MS SQL database using a ODBC connection which is working fine of course.
When I compile it as a runtime version and install it on the business computer I get an error with the ODBC connection (I can't remember exactly what pops up). On the business computer I have installed SQL Native Client and in the ODBC added a System DSN (which works).

I am in need of consultation for MS Access reading data from ODBC connection. I have SQL Server that has all the data for the project financials etc.
I need a database that will read only certain data from the tables, for example, I don't need to import all 500,000 lines from SQL through ODBC connection, I just want to bring certain data for a list of projects whichever are opened and load only that data in MS Access so the group then can add additional details for that project in a shared MS Access.
Right now, all I can do is connect to that database through ODBC and brings all the data which I don't need all as it increases the size of the database, but just a criteria to specify which data to bring, if that's possible to do.

Our master database has linked tables with ODBC to our SQL database and linked tables to another access database. On the computer i'm running this from a System DSN data source has been created to connect to our SQL database.
The problem I'm having is when I run Macros to kick off Queries, there seems to be some kind of timeout issue and its not consistant. Sometimes in Access after a hour or two, the ODBC links somehow just fails. I have to go up to the menu and go to 'Get External Data' and then 'Link Tables' and relink the ODBC DSN connection. I make sure to hit save password and the end but that doesn't seem to do much. This also happens sometimes when I close and reopen the database.
But it seems erratic, sometimes it can stay up for hours but sometimes just a few mins. Sometimes I can close the Access database and reopen without losing connection. Being so erratic, this makes it very hard for me to run batch files nightly to kick off Macros. Is there some kind of inactivty timer for DSNs? Or maybe with the SQL database itself? Or is the way i'm restablishing the ODBC connection wrong ?

I am trying to create an ODBC link to a copy of the Northwind data base.I am running Win7 on a 64 bit operating system but am keeping office running as 32 bit for Access, Excel , Visio etc due to the fact that I have a lot of old apps tied to them.
When I attempted initially to create a new system DSN ODBC connection it only allowed me to use SQL drivers. (No plurry good) So after some searching I found out that I could use a file in C:WindowsSysWOW64 called "odbcad32.exe" which has allowed me to view /use the total list of drivers to import data.So I can set up a DNS ODBC named Northwind1 and I can access the database without problems using Excel.However if I try to use the same ODBC link in Access to connect to Northwind1 I get the following error message:"You cannot use ODBC to import from export to, or link an external ?Microsoft Access or ISAM database table to your database".

I have a group of part number doesn't come with a standard format. It is very tricky since some does come with some regular flow but some are not. Therefore i try to take 2 different sample category.

I haven't done any testing yet on splitting the database I'm working on but a question came up today about networking.
This database is going to be used by a few equipment operators to record machine readings on the manufacturing floor. There is a wireless network and we are in the process of confirming that the wireless signal reaches all the areas. The users will be using ruggedized windows tablets to enter the data.
The BE of the split database will reside on a network drive to ensure everyone that needs it will have access and it will be regularly backed up. etc.
Since there is alot of heavy machinery, there may be some spots where connectivity will be weak or non-existent while they are entering their readings.
The question is how will the runtime FE handle it if connectivity is temporarily interrupted?

We have a split A2010 accdb, and the backend is now 1.8Gb so I need to do something If I put each of the 4 main tables in 4 separate backend accdbs, will the fact that the frontend then needs to link to 4 accdbs in some way impact on performance? Another possibility (given that 90% of our work only needs the recent data) is that I split the 4 main tables into 'archive' and 'current' (= recent) tables, with all the 'archive' tables in one accdb and all the 'current' tables in another accdb: but that would make it more difficult to run reports etc over the entire data Putting the 4 main tables in 4 separate backend accdbs seems like the answer to me - but are there any other considerations to this.

i have created a database and just use the feature to split the database. i then set a password on the back end database. however now when i use a macro to open a form in the front end it won't open the form and just says incorrect password.

I tried saving my split database to a flash drive so I could move it to a computer that is connected to the shared server but it did not go as I planned. The back end with the tables works fine, but when I try to open the Form on the front end it says it cannot be located. I just want to take all the files I have (Should only be 2 front/back ends) and move them onto a new computer.

I am attempting to split an Access 2007 database. My company has two locations. From my location we are remote connecting into the server. While down there they are connecting directly. When I split the database, people in my location can use it fine. When people down there use it, they get a not valid path error.
This is because the network drives are mapped differently. I have been reading that the solution is to use the UNC for the back end file path.

I am currently working on an application where I am using MS access as my FE and working with linked tables to SQL server BE. I also have a few temp tables within Access that are not linked but needed.
1. What are my steps into making this into a SPLIT DB? I am assume the BE will have my linked tables from SQL and the FE will have my temp tables and forms. Is this correct?
2. Once I split it, then I can make an .ACCDE file for a Mulit User environment, is this correct?
What other steps should I be made aware of?

I am trying to use VBA to backup the BACK-END of a split database (so I can automatically archive selected data). If I use FileCopy I get a message that the BACK-END database has not been found.Obviously I could 'unlink' the BACK-END, copy it and 're-link' it..Is it possible to copy the BACK-END tables(not just the links) into the FRONT-END and get at them that way?
