General :: Not Enough Space For Comments (Limited To 255 Characters)
Sep 18, 2013
We have created a database where data entry happens on the first form. So far all is working well on this form except users complain there is not enough space for comments. I set up a column for comments, but it is limited to 255 characters. What/How else can I set this up to provide a lot more room?
Firstly, I would apologise as I am not overly familiar with the correct terminology!
I need to create a "space" on my form whereby I can add comments etc which will exceed 255 characters: these comments will be specific to each record. I have tried having an "unbound" text box in design view but this makes the comments the same on each record.
I know this is probably "as clear as mud" but if anyone can help I would be really grateful.
I have created a query using the query builder by concatenationg several fields using the expression builder. Once concatenated, the total number of characters is greater than 255, and is therefore truncated. Since this is a query field and not a table field, there must be a way around this limitation. I can't even create the query and dump the results into a memo field because the dump will still only contain 255 char.
I could probably create the query using VBA, which creates a table containg a memo field, which is then populated by a variable containing the concatenated fields, but I would like a simpler solution.
Any ideas on how I can generate a query field that contains more than 255 char? The query is used to populate a report.
In importing data from Excel 2002 to Access 2000, I have several columns of text data that has more than 255 characters; however, importing into Access does not give me the option to redefine those data fields from "Text" to "Memo". As a result, Access truncates the data to 255 characters.
Is there anyway to work around this issue by still using the Excel file? I have saved the Excel file as an HTML file and this seems to work, but it is an extra step that I would like to avoid.
I'm using Access 2000 and want to filter the datas in a form based on a query. The query written as an SQL string has already a length of about 2000 characters. Now I want to filter this datas with information I get from a combo-box, and changed the RecordSource with additional statements in the WHERE part. Therefore the new RecordSource information can exceed the 2048 characters.
So I thought to use the filter-argument of the form instead. But the problem I have now is, that I would have to use "((First(T_Softwareversion.Softwareversionsname))>='B14')" as part of the filter argument. With using this I get the runtime error 3096. Using this as part of the WHERE part in the RecordSource works, but it works not using it in the filter argument.
Does anyone know a workaround for the first or the second problem?
How to extract the comment system from the Contacts Web Database template found in Access 2010? I can upload it if you like.
I would like to use it in a standard desktop database to track notes and comments in my records.
I am able to convert it from web to standard, but it still appears to use data macros or something, and my knowledge on macros is limited.
I just want to keep a history of my notes for each record, with the most recent always listed, and the comment system in the Contacts Web Database template seems perfect for that. I just don't know how to implement it into my desktop database.
I need to save a user's machine name when they comment on a record.
I have a form that has a comments field, and a separate area that shows the historical entries from comments.
I also have an invisible field populated by "=fOSMachineName()" that shows the users machine name. Getting this running was tough on my 64 bit machine, but it now works!)
I wish to have the machine name included in the comments field every time the "Save Record and Close" button (which runs a macro) is clicked.
Right now, when someone adds comments, it shows a date and time stamp (which I still want to keep) but I want to also capture the machine name at the same time.
I have a database which is split so that several people can have a 'front end' to the database to access one common back end. This works fine on a network but I thought I could load the backend up to my webspace and then with the links manager point to it, but it doesn't work. I get an error report of 'not a valid file name.'
The website is [URL] .... and the backend database name is Probus_data_A.accdb and so I entered [URL] .... as the address in link manager.
I am exporting a report from access. The problem is after export to .rtf, all fields appears correct except a bar code field (CCode39). It adds a space after the text which makes text non-recognizable by bar code scanner. If I use other formats, then there is no problem. I tried by using plain text as well rich text format for that particular field.
I am working on supporting spaces in the DB filename. I got the rest of my program working... other than being able to invoke Access with the specified filename for it to open.
Code: C:Documents and Settingsc_mlueckMy DocumentsFandango>"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12MSACCESS.EXE" "Schema Ideas.accdb"
C:Documents and Settingsc_mlueckMy DocumentsFandango>dir "Schema Ideas.accdb" Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is C8E4-5856
Directory of C:Documents and Settingsc_mlueckMy DocumentsFandango
I need to import circa 900 .txt files into a dbase (yet to be built), they are all of a standard format/layout. I need to import the top line into about 9 columns. So not sure how, but it can be mapped to pull the same digits per column every time.
I have a data base, one of the field contain Data like "ZZZ-DEFS#UUH1234567".
There should always be 19 characters in this field including #.I want to design a query which can sort out entries less than and more than 19 characters, so that wrong entries can be corrected .
My database has several tables (and queries) that have fields that contain people's names. Some names, like O'Neil, contain apostrophes. Other fields contain couple names, like Tom & Laura Jones. Both the ' and the & prevent queries, forms, and reports from working correctly.
I have been trying to figure out this issue concerning the memo field in the database will only send about 255 characters. I am using the cmdEmail AssignedTo : On Click macro and the Message text and have two memo fields and only one will display and the one that does only displays about 255 characters
The message text ="Issue" & ":" & Chr(13) & [COMMENT] & Chr(10) & "Resolution" & ":" & [RESOLUTION] & Chr(10).
My users do a fair bit of copy/paste from any number of sources.
How do I force the paste action to strip out any hidden characters? Now I realize that a return and a space are hidden characters, so how do I strip out everything but the ones that I want?
I have a form with one control field that I paste a 17 digit alpha numeric value into. I have a command button that then runs a query based on the pasted value.
Is there a way to automatically change the data I paste to include the first eight characters, replace the 10th and 12th position with wild cards, and delete the remaining 6 characters ?
I have a table with Zip CODE field. I uploaded my information to this table form an excel file. There were over 120K rows of data so no way i could do this in excel.
So I found that some of the ZIP codes are either blank or have less than 5 digits.
Can I build a a query with the ZIP code field that will return all zip code records with less than 5 characters or blank. I'd like to repair these zip codes and a update query will be my next step.
I repeat excel is not an option because when I try to sort by the Zip Code column my computer explodes (okay not literally) ....

Hi I am a noob and I'm having problems performing a particuler form.
I need a form that will auto-increment records as they are ented from 1 to 20 but once I have receached 20 I need it to start over at 1. So no record will have a higher number than 20 in this particular field.
