General :: Accessing Data Tables In DB With Front End
Sep 7, 2012
I work in an office with Office2000. One branch of our non-profit organisation had a volunteer design a database in Access to track the usage of rented storage bins. The database works great for its intended purpose, however the volunteer is not available and the front-end is so locked down that I can't get into the table structure to run some usage queries I need for my own job, which is Resource Development (donations).
I don't know what to say to give more info, because the computer is a stand-alone in a different department detached from the network, so I have to physically go to the other end of the building & work in it, I can't get screencaps etc easily, and most of the menus have been disabled so it doesn't even give me the info about the version of Access etc.
I have a database with a number of tables 2 of which are:
# Personal Members Table (with all their details and addresses and contact details) # Organisation Table (including who are members of this Org)
My conundrum is this; In the Org table I have just created a 'Treasurer' Field and want to choose a name from the Members Table so that I do not have to put the data in twice (which is what has happened in the past.)
I have linked the tables and but within the Members table the Field names for the Personal Name are as follows <FirstName> <LastName> and there is another for the <Org> they are connected with...
In the Members table it would also be good to have the ability to hover the mouse over the <org> field (or click) on it and then underneath a box appears with everyone who is a member of that org. I have seen this working on another database but cannot seem to replicate it here for some reason?
I have split database (B/E is in the SharePoint library, F/E has users on a local PCs). Sometimes, when I update/add data (does not matter if it is via form or directly in the table) it looks OK, but when I re-open the database, the data are gone.
Problem is that I cannot catch the moment when data were not saved (sometimes data are saved, sometimes not). I can point out this: if I re-enter the missing data, primary key continues subsequently, it looks like the data have never been entered. I tried to use script
Code: If Me.Dirty Then Me.Dirty = False
on "On Close" form event, does not work.
B/E is linked by VBA code and it looks OK (no error, Link Manager shows correct path). I suspect interrupted connetion to the SharePoint but I don't know how to check it. I implemented VBA script co keep open connection to the SP but the issue persists.
My server provider is telling me that my server is Linux and I would have to upgrade to windows to be able to connect my database to the SQL.so i figured, if there was a middle man who could collect the information and pass it along? Is there an add on of sorts to allow access to behave this way?
I am splitting a database and have created the Back end already. When I create the front end and link to the tables on the back end... The front end does not link to all the tables in the back end. The list that comes up when creating the linkings does not show all the tables in the back end. What would cause this?
I have created a database, with various forms, modules and tables. Cos this is to be used where I work I have created an ACCDE version. I can't get the original version to open so that I can make changes.
I am facing a issue in accessing my db file in server. I just splitted my database into front end and back end , placed in a local folder which is shared in network . I opened the files in network from my colleague machine and everything was working fine yesterday .. but right now i am getting error like "the network path is not found " 0X80070035 which tells that check whether the source machines is able to accept file sharing ..I googled and tried 2 solutions Like turning off windows firewall and enabling NetBIOS Over TCP/IP..
If I need to take the backend of my database offline for changes, what's the best/easiest way to inform the users? Is there some code I can drop into the front end? I'm thinking a "on database open, if [available] in tblClose equals no, then open frmDatabaseOffLine". But I don't know a) if that's possible or b) how to program it.
I want to run a query that access a table behind a form. I would like the query to accept data that the user has typed into a text box within the form. What code do I use for the query to access this text in the text box? I want the form to then display the results of the query in a List Box. Also what code will I need to change data in a table by using a form?
How do I use fields in related tables to create a calc field? The wizard only shows me the current table's fields. Can I do create me desired field by manually creating the calculation and bypassing the wizard? Or is this another restriction of Access?
i have a slight problem. In my tool i'm creating, i have a workproduct form and a button that takes me to another form that allows me to enter in defects to that work product (which works). The thing is, if the defect is found in a 'coded' work product, some fields will appear for new data, and other fields will disappear. On the work product form, there will be a field that displays if the work product is code or not (taken from a table) and the fields that will appear (and disappear) are on the defect form. I want the tool to look on that work product form to see if the 'phase' field is 'code', if it is, then show/hide fields on the defect form. Heres my way of interpreting what i want in code form. I hope you can gather whats going on from this:
Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) If !Form.preMeetingForm2.phaseName = "Code" Then lineNumber.Visible = True lineNumber_Label.Visible True function2.Visible = True function_Label.Visible = True page.Visible = False page_Label.Visible = False section2.Visible = False section_Label.Visible = False End If
Note: this Form_Open event is on the defect form (where the fields will appear and disappear)
Twice a year, a database of mine is accessed and put too use by various staff within a time range of 1 week. the database is on a shared drive and in a location which can be accessed by all.
The staff access the database from different workstations and in some instances at the same time.
This has only led to issues in the database being copied and then confusing staff on what database to click on thus i have 2 databases which i then have to sift through and copy/paste into the correct one.
I want to know the best way i can:
1) Prevent multiple users accessing the database at a time. 2) making a copy of the original and typing into a separate database.
I have just delivered my front end to the user. I have incorpoated a splash screen which uses the timer event and then a sign-in form opens. Trouble is, when the user opens the FE it just sits there on the splash screen. The Access security won't let the above process run because it stops all VBA until the user shift-starts and clicks the 'allow' button. After that it all works fine until I deliver an updated version and it all starts again. All using A2010. what I need to do to avoid the user having to shift-start?
I Created a database that allows the user to create a jobsheet (Sign off Sheet) with inputting minimal information.I am having some problems accessing the data from my form to a report. I managed to get the full name of my AssignedTo and OpenedBy come up with this
But this is only bringing up the information in my tblContacts and not actually assigning itself to the jobsheet. I have tried to just put in the "assigned to" but then this comes up as the ID number rather then the full name. And I have also tried to do this via the join table tblJobSheetContact but this only brings up Mr.
Currently the system where I work is set up so that everyone has their own front end on the local network. I would like to change this because updating all of them takes a lot of time for me and skill level for users is too low for me to trust them with updating it on there own.
My question is this:
If I were to create a shortcut on everyone's desktop that linked to one front end would this be wise? I can't seem to get a straight answer from anywhere on the internet. I know most places say that it is better to have the actual front end on the staffs computer but that would make my job of keeping the database updated even worse because staff have multiple computers and this isn't my full time job.
If this is okay practice how many users would this be able to sustain? Currently we only have 6 users on the database with there own front end and it works great. I am planning on adding around 10 more users in the future but if needed they could have there own database as they are separate programs.
I am in the process of updating a database to 2010 (.accdb) and cannot get past a problem. We are using Access 2010.
I updated the back end data to .accdb with no problem. I can't link the front end to that data without updating the front end to .accdb as well. There are no tables in the front end.
I try to update the front end to /accdb and I get the error message 'You are trying to convert an encoded database. Decode the database, then try again.'
How do I decode the database? I tried setting a password and then unsetting it, but that made no difference. I have not previously encoded the database.
can't finish the update to .accdb data. The alternative is to stay with 2003 MDB data. Is that a bad thing?
What is the best solution for sharing a front end DB as me having the BE installed at my pc, giving all user the FE and then refreshing table link with BE installed at pc but the problem is that the shared FE becoming slow any option ? as only 5 users using this at a time.
I'm trying to move a couple tables into the Front End of an Access 2010 database because the drop downs take awhile to load. We have horrible servers at work.
I can get some of them to convert to local table but naturally the ones I really need won't. The only table I want to remain in my backend is "project log data final". I don't even get an error message it just doesn't do it. Why would it not let me convert some to a local table. Does it have anything to do with relationships?
I have a database system into the back end and front end and then created the accde file with the front end file to give this to users on their computer. The back end being placed on a server with a path of type servernamefolder..I have used the Linked Table Manager to point to the tables server name folderfilename.accdb
but in doing this I get a message Windows cannot access servernamefolder..is this to do Network Rights on the server that I don't have permission to access the server and folder.
I have (on a company network) a FrontEnd .accde and a backend .accdb - currently ~ 10 users (some over wifi - slow!)The FrontEnd is becoming a rather large file ~ 10 MB and is also becoming slower.I am looking to separate this in to 3 FrontEnd files as to simplify and to lessen the file sizes etc.
My question is - are there any issues around a 3 x FrontEnd databases all connecting to 1 x backend database holding all the tables - over a network?
I just split my DB into a front end and a back end. I only want the users to have access to 2 forms in the DB because the form already has buttons that link to all other forms and reports needed. How do I customize the front end view so that they only see these 2 forms?
I have recently asked about being able to use my table system online. i have just thought. what about creating a front end that works online. still have the front end on the desktop and the table system on the desktop but have both of them connecting to the one table system.
Simply put, I have a front end that does a bunch of file moving and if it encounters an error and stops processing (which is intentional) I am the only that can login to the machine and fix it.
Is there any way to run it that would allow others to login on their own user profile, solution the problem, and start the processing again or am I stuck to a "per profile" instance?
